New to site but recently acquired a nearly complete 1944 M 20. It’s missing the speedometer, bracket and cable. Drive unit with broken cable is on front wheel. Speedometers that I’be seen on eBay have been very expensive and of questionable condition. I am wary of Indian repops but have no experience with them. Just inquiring about availability of original speedometer or experience with the repops. Thanks in advance.

You have the speedo gearbox - this is a plus as they are hard to find & expensive when you do

Put the money you might spend on an Indian made repro towards an original

Google Malcolm leach - he often has them for sale - others in the speedo reconditioning game will only sell with a px unit

Thanks John for your reply. My first inclination is to buy OEM parts and repair them if necessary. Although this is my first venture into the vintage British motorcycle world, I have several old Harleys and BMWs. There are folks here in the States that repair speedometers for these bikes but I’m not familiar with any that repair Smiths. I was unable to get contact information on Malcom Leech. I’m not in any great hurry as the M20 is getting sandblasted and painted at the moment but I will be re assembling when they come back. Any help in this regard is greatly appreciated.
