Yes, we're going again!
From an earlier discussion, I know that both Neo and I have "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" in our lists. I also know that the song is not in the top 50-500. Can it REALLY be in the top 49!?

Comments:
Moonbeam: That chillingly gothic bass line gets me every time, and if it’s good enough for Robert Smith to rip off (“The Walk” , it’s good enough for me! The first “dark” New Order track that doesn’t sound like they’re missing Ian.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
I mostly know this song from the Orgy cover from the 90s. You can tell the original is really good. New Order has three albums in the AM top 500 and I don't have any of theirs, I should pick one up.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
Nothing disgusts me more than a one-hit wonder whose only hit is a cover of a nearly perfect song. Orgy is the prime example of that, with all the goth posturing and excessive Trent Reznorish instrumental immitation making it all the worst.
The Orgy version was the first version I heard completely, I confess, since you really couldn't avoid it on radio in the mid-1990s. Something about the melody was familiar though, and when I heard the song in it's original pure form I loved it. I've haven't really dived into much of New Order beyond Power, Corruption, and Lies, but the way each of the songs just coldly and patiently emerge before the vocals come in is awesome.

Comments:
Honorio: Eric Clapton teamed with members of Delaney and Bonnie and Allman Brothers Band to form Derek & the Dominos. Their masterpiece was these pleading of love for the wife of his best friend (no other than George Harrison). The first part of the song is superb, with its legendary riff and the desperate lyrics. But the second part, built around a wonderful piano part, is pure beauty.

Comments:
Honorio: It’s not by chance that Bowie had chosen his dramatic “Life on Mars?” for his 2005 comeback with Arcade Fire. Backed by Rick Wakeman’s piano and Mick Ronson’s string arrangements, Bowie brilliantly croons a cryptic litany about the strange times going on 1971, with “the mice (hippies?) in their million hordes”, when “the workers struck out for fame / cause Lennon’s (Lenin?) on sale again” and “Mickey Mouse’s grown up a cow”.
Moonbeam: Bowie at his most majestic. “Life on Mars?” is an absolute celebration of imagination, and its camp delivery is perfect to capture its otherworldly theme.

Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
I think everybody who likes Sonic Youth picked Teenage Riot as sort of a representative Sonic Youth song because their albums tend to work better as whole albums than groups of singles.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
Teenage riot is not overrated at all ! It's one of the few songs that makes me think that 80s has been a total waste of time for rock'n'roll !
Catchy songs, great riff, huge influence, great drum on the middle of the song (I wanted to say "great bridge" but I'm not totally sure that's the good way to say that in english)
Teenage kicks is overrated, teenage riot is not !
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
Great, I love this song Setting Sun ! I voted for it too...
Oh wait... another confusion... looks like Tomorrow Never Knows was INDEED The Chemical Brothers' favourite song !
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
Atta boy, nicolas. You tell him!
No offense Sinder. But with things like this, people like to throw in their two cents about where things should be ranked (if at all), and the dialogue gets really old after a while. Nobody cares.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
Now, as expected of course, all the classics come rolling in, and I don't have a problem with that at all. There were some real surprises in the list, but you didn't really expect the usual suspects to just be forgotten?
Henrik, I'm afraid it's not gonna make it. I didn't place it that high, so it might not have gotten enough points.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
Don't complain Neo ! I've got none left (well, I have one but I really doubt anyone else has voted for a Millencolin song) !
I was going to say that Dry the rain would probably be the last surprise on the top, but I guess Let Down must be a huge surprise too for anyone who did not follow the 90s poll results !
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
I know LonesomePanda, my top 10 is an odd combination of guilty pleasures and highly acclaimed songs. If these remaining 3 come in top 10 I wouldn't be too surprised.

Comments:
Honorio: This song creates addiction. But don’t blame it to heroin, blame it to the secret ingredient of the formula of pop, the one that makes you sing along and hear the song again and again, the one that makes this style superior to any other (in my opinion). By the way, I don’t know the secret ingredient. If I knew it maybe I would be Paul McCartney. Or Lee Mavers.

Comments:
Honorio: Lou Reed got back to some emblematic people from Andy Warhol’s Factory in order to taking us for a walk on the New York wild side, with a smooth jazz rhythm build on Herbie Flower’s upright bass. Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Jose D’Allesandro, Jackie Curtis. Transvestism, prostitution, hustle, drugs, decadence. “I said, babe, take a walk on the wild side / and the coloured girls go doo, doo, doo”.

Comments:
Honorio: “Life is bigger / bigger than you”. Michael Stipe sending out a string of inscrutable confessions. “That’s me in the spotlight / losing my religion”. Peter Buck playing a timeless mandolin. “Consider this / the hint of the century”. The poetic (and commercial) zenith that R.E.M. were pursuing from the middle eighties. But “I’ve said too much / I haven’t said enough”.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
Imagine the album has a lot of great songs on it, all of which are about how everybody who disagrees with John Lennon is a stupid lying capitalist Nazi.
I'M SO SICK OF HEARING THINGS FROM PEOPLE WHO DISAGREE WITH ME! ALL I WANT IS THE TRUTH! MY OPINION IS TRUTH!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
Wow great countdown - the big surprise for me was 'Venus In Furs' just never considered it in the top 100. Thought 'Losing My Religion' would be higher given the level of support R.E.M. seem to get here...

Rocky Raccoon: Ask anyone who's ever played guitar how amazing this arrangement is. Yeah, it's overplayed, but that's because it's great. When it comes on the radio turn it off and only listen when you're ready to listen to it.

Honorio: No doubt, the most important cross-over hits that deserved all its success. The usual impeccable singing of Michael Jackson met here with great song-writing, with lyrics about a fictional paternity suit. And let me point to the polite and detailed production of Quincy Jones. Every note, every sigh, every cry, every element of the song is perfectly executed and exactly placed.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 4)
Top 25!! Aw, I'm gonna have to be away for the next couple of hours, guess I'll miss it. Great to see Paranoid Android come in so well though, my number 1 of all time.

Comments:
Honorio: A delicious anomaly in 60s California psychedelic scene, and even an anomaly within its own band and album. While “Forever Changes” was the work of art of Arthur Lee, “Alone Again Or” was written and sang by Bryan MacLean and featured a flamenco-style chord pattern and a Tijuana Brass-style trumpet solo. But it had a bittersweet tone common with Lee material: “And I will be alone again tonight my dear”.
