What years in music do you prefer of the soon to end decade? Do you prefer 2000 through 2004 OR 2005 through 2009? On the first side we have Kid A, Is This It, White Blood Cells, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Yoshimi, Elephant, Speakerboxxx..., Funeral and Franz Ferdinand but on the other we have Illinois, Return to Cookie Mountain, Sound of Silver, Neon Bible, In Rainbows, Third, Dear Science, Fleet Foxes, and MPP.
I think when I get around to making my top decade top 100 list, the first half of the decade will win out. In saying that however, 2007 is probably my favourite year just for the sheer number of albums I really enjoy. The years either side of it are not paticularily strong though.
First half has much higher peaks while the second half is slightly deeper. When I do my top 100 albums list there will probably be a few more albums from the second half, but as a whole I expect the first half to do better.
I'd probably give a slight edge to the first part of the 2000s, as 2001, 2003 and 2004 were all incredibly strong for me, but 2007 has helped to boost up the latter half. 2009 looks promising so far, so it's tough to say.
I'd say early 2000's but I'm biased because I was a college radio music director during that time so I listened to a lot of music. The music of the early 00's shaped my life more than any other I'd say.
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is my top album of the decade, with Kid A and The Microphones The Glow Part 2 coming in close 2nd and 3rd; all in the first 3 years of the decade.
I actually think the second half of the decade has been more consistent, but most years since 2005 I haven't found an album I considered a 5 star classic.
First half. I would say that 2000-2003 were by far the best - great albums by Radiohead, Wilco, Modest Mouse, Interpol, White Stripes, QOTSA, Trail of Dead, At the Drive-In, and a dozen others. I have found the last 5 years to be far less satisfying, with the notable exception of 2007 which had a lot of really strong records.
I've personally felt like there haven't been any legitimate masterpieces released in a few years. I don't think I've given a 5 star to any record since Brian Wilson's SMiLE.
