Only Kyuss is on my top 100 (I would say around #50) but there is plenty albums I enjoy on this row. And I have heard about 30 of them, which is much more than in the previous rows.
1. THIS MORTAL COIL “It’ll End in Tears”
2. SUEDE “Coming Up”
3. THE BLUE NILE “A Walk Across the Rooftops”
4. THE JAYHAWKS “Tomorrow the Green Grass”
5. THE BEACH BOYS “Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)”
6. KHALED “Khaled”
7. RICHARD HAWLEY “Coles Corner”
8. EURYTHMICS “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”
9. PAUL WELLER “Wild Wood”
10. TOM WAITS “Closing Time”
1. Discovery - Daft Punk - I love this album. Had it at number 26 for the '08 poll... may be higher now. Thomas Bangalter describes his own album well: "This album has a lot to do with our childhood and the memories of the state we were in at that stage of our lives. It's about our personal relationship to that time. It's less of a tribute to the music from 1975 to 1985 as an era, and more about focusing on the time when we were zero to ten years old. When you're a child you don't judge or analyze music. You just like it because you like it. You're not concerned with whether it's cool or not. Sometimes you might relate to just one thing in a song, such as the guitar sound. This album takes a playful, fun, and colorful look at music. It's about the idea of looking at something with an open mind and not asking too many questions. It's about the true, simple, and honest relationship you have with music when you're open to your own feelings."
2. Keep It Like A Secret - Built to Spill - One of the strongest straight ahead rock albums.
3. Duke Ellington & John Coltrane - Coltrane applying himself to some of the great melodic lines of the jazz canon.
4. The Magic Numbers - Pretty strong. Reaches a wonderful crescendo on "Love Me Like You"
5. Clones of Dr. Funkenstein - Parliament - Everything, as it should be, is on the One.
There's a very tight race for 5th place. A single tenth place vote could change it. But, the top four are pretty much in.
What I'm finding about this block is that there are a lot of albums a few people put as #1 or #2 and nobody else ranks at all. With a few notable exceptions it seems to a be a 'love it or hate it' block.
1. Built to Spill - Keep it Like a Secret
2. Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley (im no metalhead but its awesome)
3. Mark Lanegan - Bubblegum (features PJ Harvey & QOTSA)
4. Fugazi - 13 Songs
5. White Stripes - Icky Thump
6. Bob Marley & the Wailers - Uprising
7. Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Clinic (my least favorite 80's bhs release, why dont the others get more acclaim?)
8. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Kicking Against the Pricks
9. REM - Monster
10. ACDC - Let there Be Rock
Assuming nobody is trying to stick their vote in the last ten minutes...
1. Daft Punk - Discovery (138/20/2)
2. Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues (115/10/0)
3. White Stripes - Icky Thump (105/10/0)
4. Bright Eyes - Lifted (93/6/3)
5. The Byrds - Turn, Turn, Turn (74/6/0)
--
Beirut - Gulag Orkestrar (72/5/0)
This Heat - Deceit (71/5/2)
This Mortal Coil - It'll End In Tears (66/5/1)
Tom Waits - Closing Time (64/5/2)
Beach Boys - Summer Days (62/5/2)
Also receiving multiple #1s:
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (48/3/2)
U2 - Rattle And Hum (47/3/2)
There were a lot of albums this block that received a few really high ratings and nothing else. In this block they were beaten by the albums that got several lower ratings, but those are the ones I'm more likely to add to my own list.
Except for Discovery, which seemed to be a major consensus.
I'm surprised Ram didn't even cut the top 10. It's a mandatory album for any Beatles fan, and I know there are a bunch here. I say that because no other Beatles solo album sounds like a lost Beatles album than Ram does.
