Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Great lists, boys. I won’t be able to post my list for 2001 till the first week of August, so if somebody wants to do this year, there’s no problem for me.

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

but... but... he killed my number one

he who.

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Mmm, it seems that everyone forgot this fascinating game.
Suggestions:
- Nicolas: you booked it 2000 long ago. Even it seems you’re busy now (I wish you good luck finding a new work!), won’t you continue the game? I booked 2001 but if you can’t I could do 2000. Or anyone else interested.
- Henrik: a lot of time passed since the last marathon table (25 years in fact) so I suppose that it could be a lot of work now. But a new update could be great…

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Oooops ! Sorry, I've completely forgotten

I'm afraid I won't have time to do it
I prefer to post my artist and 86 lists before I go on holidays on tuesday, and I'm busy yes
Sorry Honorio

Please do 2000 if you want it because I really don't have time for that

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

The lost focus on this game is completely my fault. My days haven't been very structured during my holiday (the last month).

And, eh, my spreadsheet for the marathon table is on my computer at work... I'm not going back to work until next year (after a paternal leave) but I need to get a few other things as well at my office so I'll post an update of the marathon table here soon.

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Hi, Henrik. So you won’t go back to work till next year! Wow, how lucky you are to be Swede, I’ve just read in Wikipedia that Sweden is the European country with more generous conditions of parental leave. This graphic is quite eloquent.
And Nicolas, don’t worry, I can do 2000. But not till tomorrow, if someone wants to do it today (or whatever he wants) please post your intentions today. If not, stay tuned for more great music in WMAM tomorrow with DJ H…

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Yes, we are fortunate parents in Sweden. And we have a huge possibility to share the parental leave days between the parents. Of the 480 days in total, only 60 days have to be taken out by the father and 60 days by the mother. Because of breastfeeding, lower salaries and the tradition of mothers taking care of the baby, the mothers still take out most of the days in the majority of families, but it's getting more and more equal. We (the fathers) can take care of our children!

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Ye shall post an update soon?

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Many thanks for this update, Henrik. A really nice list and a quite unorthodox one (the very first Beatles song is at #47!). Now we can enter the new millennium beginning with the year…

2000

Hi everyone. Good morning, good afternoon or good evening (depending on the part of the world you’re on). You’re listening to WWAM, your favourite radio station. Are you ready for a good time?
Well, let’s go then. I’m DJ H, hosting my last end of the year special program almost 40 years after the first time. In these 40 years I’ve been losing the letters of my name (Honorious-Honoris-Hono-Hon-H), the hairs in my head and soon I’m going to lose my job. There’s no place for old DJs like me in this new century, although my last list is invaded of new sounds from the past. Believe me, I’m not gaga yet, stay with me and you will see. Or should I say hear. Here. In WWAM. Your radio.

Looking for the future in the past? Bizarre, isn’t it? Do you want a significant sample? Well, Daft Punk offers you a lot of retro samples, disco bass lines, cheesy horns and Eurodisco keyboards. And the vocals heavily loaded with pitch-bend and vocoder effects are retro-futuristic too. Come on, let’s go back “One More Time”.

10. (NEW) Daft Punk – One More Time

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Hey, what’s that? White ties with black shirts like the new-wave bands from the early 80s? Energy and fury like the punk bands from the late 70s? Hard garage rock like The Stooges from the late 60s? Nothing new then? Well, it never sounded so fresh. “Hate to Say I Told You So”. But I did it.

9. (NEW) The Hives – Hate to Say I Told You So

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Now we have sounds from the immediate past, two great songs from the last decade. The Blur homage-parody to the grunge sound and The Verve defiant anthem are still in our list. I can’t change my mould, no, no, no.

8. (6) (4 years) Blur – Song 2

7. (9) (4 years) The Verve – Bitter Sweet Symphony

(scroll up to see the videos)

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Surely hip-hop is not a new style, but some bands and solo artists are finding new ways to keeping it always fresh and exciting. And doing that task there is no one better than Outkast, the Atlanta-based duo that displays in this song a nice contrast between the aggressive rap of Big Boi and the sensitive one of André 3000. I’m sorry, “Ms. Jackson”, I am for real.

6. (NEW) Outkast – Ms. Jackson

And for the non-English speakers, go here

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Now we got a woman with almost 20 years of career, a veteran in our list. Madonna, rooting deeper and deeper in past sounds (70s disco music and 80s house) to face the new century at the forefront again. Sexier and funkier than ever, this is Madonna’s “Music”

5. (NEW) Madonna – Music

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

And now it’s time for the only song remaining that could be a threat to “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. And even to “God Only Knows”. Could Jarvis beat Brian? Well, only time will tell…

4. (07) (6 years) Pulp – Common People

(scroll up to see the video)

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

And another orgy of samples of music from the past that creates a delicious new sound. The Australia-based combo The Avalanches represents the height of sampledelia with a completely mad mix of the most diverse elements. Like these two miners rushing into a Flashdance-like scenario. “Since I Left You” I found the world so new.

3. (NEW) The Avalanches – Since I Left You

And you can find here an absurd theory about the racism of the video-clip (that has generated more that 15,000 comments on youtube). What a strange world…

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Nu-house. Coming from the sounds of the 80s house but opening new paths for the dance music, Basement Jaxx produced some of the most contagious and irresistible tracks at the end of the last decade. Just listen to this “Red Alert” and see how the music keeps on playin’ on and on.

2. (2) (2 years) Basement Jaxx – Red Alert

(scroll up to see the video)

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Honorio, I wanted to praise your show, but that youtube conversation about racism may be the saddest thing I've ever read, so now I'm just upset!

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Don’t get upset, Henrik, the whole thing is completely ridiculous. I just found it looking for the video and posted it, the oddest thing is the enormous amount of people that replied. But not us (I hope), it’s better to ignore it.

And now our new number one. For me it was undoubtedly the best song of 2000, hope the next DJs give it a chance to stay long enough in the list. The (fictional?) story of a fan obsessed with his music hero that benefit of a clever storytelling and a dramatic build-up. The best hip-hop song ever?

1. (NEW) Eminem featuring Dido – Stan

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

The list:
1. (NEW) Eminem featuring Dido – Stan
2. (2) (2 years) Basement Jaxx – Red Alert
3. (NEW) The Avalanches – Since I Left You
4. (7) (6 years) Pulp – Common People
5. (NEW) Madonna – Music
6. (NEW) OutKast – Ms. Jackson
7. (9) (4 years) The Verve – Bitter Sweet Symphony
8. (6) (4 years) Blur – Song 2
9. (NEW) The Hives – Hate to Say I Told You So
10. (NEW) Daft Punk – One More Time

Eliminated:
Radiohead - Karma Police
Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way
TLC - No Scrubs
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker
Fatboy Slim - Praise You
Mr. Oizo - Flat Beat. Sorry fishnetamethyst, I’ve broken the unwritten rule, but you did it too. Friends?

Missed the cut:
OutKast – B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)
Coldplay – Yellow
Aaliyah – Try Again
U2 – Beautiful Day

And that was all from this old DJ. I’m going to the radio office right now for my retirement paycheck. It’s been a pleasure to share so many hours and years of good music with such a distinguished audience. Hope the XXI Century will provide us with music as good as the one we had during the XX Century. Where? Here in WWAM, of course. Stay tuned.

And as a postscript I’m going to post again a list that I sent in 2005, quite different to the actual one:
1. EMINEM feat. DIDO “Stan” (amazing!, it sends shivers down my spine).
2. BJÖRK feat. THOM YORKE “I’ve Seen It All” (this is pure beauty).
3. THE GO-BETWEENS “Going Blind” (a perfect pop song from the best comeback of this year).
4. MADONNA “Music” (“Hey Mr DJ, put a record on, I wanna dance with my baby…” .
5. GOLDFRAPP “Lovely Head” (a Shirley Bassey for the XXI century… and this Theremin!).
6. MOLOKO “The Time Is Now” (“Give up yourself unto the moment / The time is now / Give up yourself unto the moment / Let’s make this moment last” .
7. KYLIE MINOGUE “Spinning Around” (wow, have you seen the video-clip?).
8. OUTKAST “Ms. Jackson” (it’s not my number 1, but the Acclaimed Music number 1 absolutely deserves to be in the Top Ten).
9. YO LA TENGO “You Can Have It All” (fun, fun, fun; on stage they did a foolish dance while they played this song).
10. MOJAVE 3 “In Love With A View” (an Englishman in Americana).

Well, a lot of female touch. And my Top Ten of Spanish songs of 2000:
1. NU TEMPO “Islas” (thinking about the Cuba shores from the dry fields of Aragon in Spain).
2. BERGMAN “Enigmas In Your Hand” (an orchestral shelter for the sweetest melody).
3. KIKO VENENO “Coge la guitarra” (“Coge la guitarra, hermano mío / Coge la guitarra que hace mucho frío”; “Bring the guitar, my brother / Bring the guitar cause it’s very cold in here” .
4. STEVE WYNN & AUSTRALIAN BLONDE “Suddenly” (a mp3 wedding of an American rock hero with a Spanish indie band).
5. SR. CHINARRO “Cero en gimnasia” (the childhood memories of the strangest boy of the class).
6. TONINO CAROTONE “Me cago en el amor” (a Spanish singer being transfigured in a fictional Italian crooner).
7. LA CASA AZUL “Cerca de Shibuya” (in Spain we called this “tonti-pop” (“silly-pop” , but it’s pure fun).
8. LOS PLANETAS “Un buen día” (a day in the life of the best appreciated Spanish indie-band).
9. SEXY SADIE “I Don’t Know” (indie-rock spanish-style).
10. CATHY CLARET “La chica del viento” (a French girl with a sweet voice trying her luck with the “rumba flamenca”

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Noooooooo ! My 2nd favourite song of the 00s missed the cut (well I don't have my all time songs list but I'm quite sure only one beats it) ! Bombs over Baghdad is the greatest hip-hop song ever

(well... great list except for that )

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Sorry Lonesomepanda, I though that one song for OutKast was enough, and I prefer “Ms. Jackson”. Although B.O.B. is great too!!

Youtube links for the 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10 Spanish songs, if someone cares.

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

That's not sad. This is sad.

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Did we ever finish this? If not, should we start it up again?

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

I've been a terrible host, but yes we should definitely move on with this. Thanks Penguin for reminding me.

I checked the earlier threads and found these bookings

2001 ?
2002 Lonesome Panda
2003 AJackson
2004 ?
2005 ?
2006 mismaiome
2007 Slush

Honorio had 2001, but took 2000 instead. Anyone else who'd like to do the show? Also, Lonesome Panda, AJackson, mismaiome, Slush, could you please let me know if you're still up for this. Thanks!

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

of course I am, I love 2002, already have looked for youtube links and ranked the songs of 2000 and 2001... just have to wait for anybody to do 2000 !

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

2000 has been done, it's 2001 now. I can do it, but I'm pretty sure somebody else would do it better than me. Besides I've done quite a few of these lists already.

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Don't forget this (old) thread !
I'm still up for 2002 but we need someone to do 2001 !

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

OK, I'll do it, but I don't like much here.

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Now let's party like it's 2001. I was 21 back then, had just broken up with my first real girlfriend, and heavily into NME.

I wouldn't say I was a big rap fan back then. I've grown into a bigger fan through the years, though I still ain't a big fan. OutKast however, is very poppy, and I guess even my mother could like them. This is a live recording from the Grammys apparantly. Enjoy.

10. (6) (2 years) OutKast – Ms. Jackson

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

This next one is actually quite annoying, though it is strangely addictive. I was never a big fan of Basement Jaxx either (I once skipped a concert with them to eat moose kebabs), but this song is probably my favourite. I think I have been partying to this one.

9. (2) (3 years) Basement Jaxx – Red Alert

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Here's a new song for you. And from the savers of rock music, none other than The Strokes. Oh my god, how I loved that record. It was played to shreds. I brought the CD with me to every party I went to, and sometimes I got to play it. After a year in my pocket the cover was shattered and the CD looked like it had been used as a plate at a steak restaurant, but the CD still sounded damn good, only now with skipping and jumping. All these years later the CD has been replaced, it's still quite good, but I have moved on from both hard partying and these ultracool New Yorkers.

8. (NEW) The Strokes - Hard to Explain

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

"Here comes love / It's like honey / You can't buy it with money"

That's some pretty stupid lyrics. I've bought honey several times, and I've payed with money every time.

7. (NEW) New Order - Crystal

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Hey, Rune, congratulations for your list so far, and many thanks for reviving this splendid game…

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

I don't really like The Hives. They have made one song, and recorded it over and over. This one is probably their best version of that song.

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Rune my hero!!!!!!!

...and I always love your comments!

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

One of the more successful supergroups of recent years, only destroyed by the moronic cartoons. It must be their lack of superstar looks in real life that made them come up with such a crap idea. Anyways, Damon Albarn make them sound like Blur for the new millennium, and that's a good idea.

5. (NEW) Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

There was a time when The White Stripes were frequently mentioned in the same sentence as The Strokes, but time did show that you emptied yourself for air while shouting THE STROKES!!!! on the top of your lungs, but you could talk about The White Stripes for hours, days, months and even years. However, now I'm a little tired of The White Stripes, but that's probably not their fault. It's me getting old.

4. (NEW) The White Stripes - Fell In Love With a Girl

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

It's Blur for the old millennium. I was definitely an Oasis man back in the days, but they never wrote a song like this. I've jumped into walls listening to it. I've kicked things over and shouted woohoo. And I still do it if I'm at a party and this is played. So hide your vases if you invite me home.

3. ( (5 years) Blur – Song 2

Re: Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Hot diggily dang! I forgot about the last two. Here they are:

There's nothing common about The Sexiest Man In Britain 1995. What an album they made. And of course you all have heard Jarvis sing this song a million times, so here it is with William Shatner and Joe Jackson instead.

2. (4) (7 years) Pulp – Common People

Re: AYCOADB: Thread 12

Song number two ended for some reason between 4 and 5, I think. It was Pulp's Common People, spoken by William Shatner. Check it out.

Here's the winner. I've written about my love for The Strokes further up this thread, and they just had to win this. The song still sounds great, though of course it isn't an evergreen, as I believed back in the days. However, it's number one for a reason. I kissed a girl, and I liked it!
