Beatles Survivor: Cut 31- With end-gameplan!

This upcoming cut will take us to the top 50 and maybe beyond! Here is the plan for the rest of the game (after this cut).

Thursday: Bring nominations down from 10 votes to 5.

40 or less left: Eliminate 4 rather than 5.

20 or less: Eliminate 3

10 or less: Eliminate 2 for two cuts

Final cut: Eliminate whatever is left (There will be 6 songs or less left) and declare a winner!

The tiebreaker rule will still apply for every round.

Eliminated:

20 Can't Buy Me Love
19 Mother Nature's Son
19 Cry Baby Cry
19 Got To Get You Into My Life
15 Fixing a Hole

Close: I Want You (She's So Heavy)

RULES: Vote for 10 Beatles songs assigning 5 points to two, 4 points to two, 3 points to two, 2 points to two and 1 point to two. Please put the point value next to each song. Please follow this format to make it easy for me to plug into Excel.

5: Song
5: Song
4: Song
4: Song etc...

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

5 songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. The deadline for submitting a list is 2PM on each elimination day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 31- With end-gameplan!

5: She Loves You
5: I Saw Her Standing There
4: If I Needed Someone
4: Carry That Weight
3: Taxman
3: Golden Slumbers
2: Come Together
2: Something
1: Eleanor Rigby: Guess I'm the first to vote for it, which is really surprising to me. Obviously I think it's a good song but it's really shocking that a slow ballad that doesn't see a ton of acclaim made it this far without a single vote.
1: Lady Madonna: I'm sticking to my list but if the list I had were a living document I think I would have voted this off a few cuts ago. I listened to the entire catalog that day I made my list so I trust that judgment more than what I'm playing back in my head.

5: You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
5: For No One
4: You Won't See Me
4: Rain
3: Golden Slumbers
3: Penny Lane
2: Lady Madonna
2: She's Leaving Home
1: We Can Work It Out
1: I Will - One of the biggest surprises must be that, out of all the great songs from "White Album", this song is still in the game. Well, I'm always in for a slow cowboy beat, but now it's time to go.

This ballot hasn't changed much. Hope to get I Want You (She's So Heavy) out this week! That song goes on much too long.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 31- With end-gameplan!

It’s officially becoming difficult:
5 points- Rain- 1st backwards guitar or not, it really isn’t all that great a song.
5 points- I Want You (She’s So Heavy)- Sounds good as part of the medley, OK on its own. As Penguin says, it overstays its welcome.
4 points- If I Needed Someone- A charming ditty, but in the end ONLY a ditty.
4 points- All My Loving- See above. I’m surprised this one’s hung in there so long.
3 points- Happiness is a Warm Gun- The variety within it improves it but I still feel this is one of the weaker cuts on the WHITE ALBUM.
3 points- Carry That Weight- Stronger than “I Want You” but again it’s better in the medley than all by itself.
2 points- I Will- Nice understated Paul ballad but it’s not as good as what’s left.
2 points- For No One- Painful to have to vote for this but it’s a bit on the precious side.
1 point- Don’t Let Me Down- One of the better “non-hit” cuts from LET IT BE but the album as a whole is a weaker effort from the Fabs.
1 point- This was the hardest one to choose (from among "You Won't See Me","Nowhere Man" and "The End") but I ended up going with "The End" (no pun intended). Same reason as for "I Want You" and "Carry That Weight"..sounds better in its surroudings than it does "naked".

I'm really not looking forward to making NEXT week's decisions!

1: Lady Madonna

Sorry to see "Cry Baby Cry" leave; Lennon's own opinion notwithstanding, it's one of my favorite White Album tracks. So is "I Will", which I'm glad is still alive after all this time. Beautiful lyrics and melody, and come on - how can you not love a song with a vocalized bass line?

New votes:
1: Lady Madonna: a nice style exercise from McCartney, reminiscing early rock ‘n’ roll days. The only flaw I can notice is that, while in early songs as “I Saw Her Standing There” (still in the tournament) this flavour showed spontaneously, in this one it seemed so self-conscious…
1. All My Loving: I know that it isn’t fair to judge a song (and a book) by the cover, but this cover by Los Manolos (a serious candidate to Rune’s list) has ruined completely the song to me. I must admit that I smiled the first time I’ve listened to it, but the overexposure in Spain at the time made me hate the song. And I’m really sorry because it’s one of the best of the early period. Or mai lovin, nai no nai no naaaa

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 31- With end-gameplan!

I agree you Honorio, "I saw her standing there" and "All my loving" are great songs and probably the best two rocking songs from their early period.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 31- With end-gameplan!

By rocking I think you mean great right? Cause I don't think All My Loving rocks. But it definitely rules.

Major points for anyone who gets what I'm referencing.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 31- With end-gameplan!

My list is looking like a tracklist for a McCartney tribute show! So it confirms what I'd said in that discussion raised by Anthony about how many songs by each beatle there were in our top 10: John and George are by far my favorites in the band.

5: For No One
5: All My Loving
4: In My Life
4: I Feel Fine
3: Golden Slumbers
3: Yesterday
2: I Will
New Votes:
2: Eleanor Rigby: Surely a good song, but the melody of the verses doesn't catch me. Anyway, I hadn't still voted for it cause sounds perfect after Taxman, and makes I'm Only Sleeping sound delicious.
1: You Never Give Me Your Money: For some time it had been my favorite Abbey Road track, but, every time I listen to it nowadays, the infectious feeling that it used to create is little by little replaced by indifference. This song is a whole medley itself, and, surely, if its parts had been given different names each one instead of being united as parts of a unique song, almost all of them would already be out of this game currently. Anyway, until today it's a song I really like, but think this can slowly change.
1: Tomorrow Never Knows: Can't imagine Revolver without this. I'm sure all the impression of density, diversity and every other aspect that shocked me in my first contacts with the album is due in major part to this song. But, despite of its role in the album, in the Beatles career, and in all pop music (well, that's too much to simply ignore, ), what can we see? I mean, imagine there had already been composed other songs with the same style and the same innovations before. Would everybody love this as we always see? Making the same reflection about Strawberry Fields or even A Day in the Life, I conclude they still would be considered Beatles' greatests, cause there's more substance in them than only innovation and mood creation. But, about the track in discussion, it probably would only be a very nice song.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 31- With end-gameplan!

Bad week for me. Not one change.

5: I Am the Walrus
5: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
4: All My Loving
4: I'm Only Sleeping
3: Paperback Writer
3: Penny Lane
2: I Feel Fine
2: Golden Slumbers
1: Across the Universe
1: She Said, She Said

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 31- With end-gameplan!

5: She's Leaving Home: That this is considered (at least in this game) the 4th best song on this album either speaks to how overrated Peppers is, or how it is the best case of an album being more than the sum of its parts
5: She Said She Said
4: Don't Let Me Down
4: I'm Only Sleeping
3: I Want You (She's So Heavy)
3: If I Needed Someone
2: I Will
2: All My Loving
1: Taxman: Because it's "George's first good song", and it leads off Revolver, I think it gets a bit more of a free pass than it deserves.
1: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 31- With end-gameplan!

5. You Won't See Me
5. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
4. Carry That Weight
4. Blackbird
3. Lady Madonna
3. If I Needed Someone
2. Here, There And Everywhere
2. I Will
1. Golden Slumbers
1. The End

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 31- With end-gameplan!

This time, I remembered to use your preferred format, John.

5: Lady Madonna
5: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
4: You Won’t See Me
4: She’s Leaving Home
3: Don’t Let Me Down
3: Across the Universe
2: While My Guitar Gently Weeps

NEW
2: I Will [it’s OK—it’s not a masterpiece]
1: Dear Prudence [ditto]
1: You Never Give Me Your Money [I like it, but it has the same drawback as most of the songs on Abbey Road’s side 2—it’s unfinished, and it shows.]
