Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Time to take on 1985. The year musicians felt they had to help the world. We had USA For Africa, Live Aid, and Farm Aid. Bands that disbanded and were apparently not into helping the world include: Men At Work, Chic, Orange Juice, The Sugarhill Gang and The Police. I knew Sting didn't really care! 1985 is also the year of the death of the creator of one of my favorite soundtracks, The Harry Lime Theme in The Third Man, Anton Karas. Interestingly, the immortal Orson Welles (playing Harry Lime) also died in 1985. Anyway, I digress, vote away!

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 30th of June. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

Please have a look at the 1985 album and song lists before voting, as albums and songs listed under 1985 at Acclaimed Music will only be counted in the forum poll if they are included in this month's ballots.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Is 'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side' counted for 1985 or 1986?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Nothing on my last top 100 list, but three might make my top 100 now. (When I say ~150, that means it's about my 50th favorite that did not make my last top 100)

1. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (~109)
2. Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy (~142)
3. New Order - Low Life (~143)
4. The Fall - Nation's Saving Grace (~171)
5. The Cure - Head On The Door (~205)
6. The Smiths - Meat Is Murder (~210)
7. Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (~227)
8. Husker Du - Flip Your Wig (~230)

Stop giving out points here. Only my top eight get points from me.

9. Prefab Sprout - Two Wheels Good
10. REM - The Reconstruction Fables

I'll need more time on the songs, mostly because other than the ones from Dire Straits and Tom Waits I can't remember any song names.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Can I use all my votes to take away votes from Rain Dogs? Just kidding.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

What's the deal with Steve McQueen/Two Wheels Good anyway? They're both listed as the same album. All I know is, Steve McQueen was way more expensive than Two Wheels Good.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Only if I can take points away from Joshua Tree in it's year. ;)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

STEVE McQUEEN was the British title. It was changed to TWO WHEELS GOOD for the U.S. because, apparently, the actor's estate objected (I have no idea why, as McAloon clearly named the album after McQueen as a tribute).

"I've got six things on my mind/You're no longer one of them", from "Desire As", is one of the greatest lines ever. Just thought I'd mention that.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Stephan, I'm sure you're aware of this, but don't forget to combine all the votes for STEVE McQUEEN and TWO WHEELS GOOD, as they are identical.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Midaso: 1985

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Is The Boy With The Thorn In His Side from 1985 the exact same version as the track on 1986 The Queen is Dead?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

1. Depeche Mode- Shake the Disease

Now that came as a pleasant surprise! Have you voted for DM before, John?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

DM is really hit and miss for me but Shake the Disease is an amazing song and very underrated. Although, I should have voted for People are People in 1984.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Is The Boy With The Thorn In His Side from 1985 the exact same version as the track on 1986 The Queen is Dead?

According to wikipedia it's not, but the song is listed as 1985 on the website. And I think it'd be very hard to know whether a critic was voting for the original or the album version. I'm not a Smiths expert, so if any of the people who spend all their time looking for deleted Smiths singles, original—not re-released underlined could tell us which one they're most likely referring to..

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

I think a vote for "The Boy With the Thorn..." should be a vote for "The Boy With the Thorn..." and that's that. Trying to separate votes for the single version vs. the album version seems kind of pointless (cf. the discussion of "Brimful of Asha" in another thread). Wouldn't that be kind of like voting for "This Charming Man" in the '84 poll and specifying that you mean the version on HATFUL OF HOLLOW?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Tough year for me, almost as bad as 1987 (where I have listened to presently only 2 albums). But a few gems.

7. R.E.M. - Can't Get There From Here
8. Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me)
9. Dire Straights - Walk of Life
10. Talking Heads - Stay Up Late
11. a-ha - Take On Me
12. Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World
13. Tom Waits - Downtown Train
14. The Smiths - The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
15. R.E.M. - Life and How to Live It
16. Frank Zappa - Alien Orifice
17. Katrina and the Waves - Walking on Sunshine
18. R.E.M. - Feeling Gravity's Pull
19. Talking Heads - And She Was
20. R.E.M. - Driver 8

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

No votes yet for Rum, Sodomy & the Lash, the only album I truly love in 1985 ? Guess I will have to vote this time, I thought I would wait 89 to start voting for albums !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

I'll vote for it but please vote too
I like that album, especially its last song

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

I was surprised how many songs I still liked from this year, but it wasn't much good for albums. Some of the established great artists of the '80s had disappointing albums in '85 (The Smiths, R.E.M., Prince to a degree). Still, there's always good stuff to find...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Great minds I guess, Beef Supreme. I actually would put the Butthole Surfers album in my 3rd spot but I had it on my last years list before I saw it was bubbling under in 1985 on AM. Seems to be another one of those controversial release dates.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Not the greatest year for albums if you're looking for top-heavy. But there were a lot of very good albums that fell just short of greatness. A high vote for the Pogues, which should make some earlier posters happy, but why has the best album of the year been ignored? Is it not cool to admit liking great heartland music?

1. John Cougar Mellencamp - Scarecrow
2. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
3. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
4. The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and the Lash
5. Husker Du - New Day Rising
6. The Replacements - Tim
7. Minutemen - 3-Way Tie (For Last)

16. Prefab Sprout - Two Steve McQueens Good

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

OH, and I've listened to the Smiths too
I love Marr's guitar work, so inventive but as soon as Bigmouth opens it, man, I have to run away...
Sorry but I really can't stand his voice.
Marrs makes these lovely intros and then it looks like him and Morrissey are recording two different records and then mix the tracks. Weird. Sorry for the Smiths fans, especially Midaso, but God knows I tried but I just can't.

Here is the FRench song of the month, by Renaud a sort of modern (and less talented) Brassens mixed with folk-rock. This song is very beautiful. It's about his daughter and I love it especially now that I have my own daughter. A very very romantic song, nothing to do with the Fall or the Meat Puppets but good anyway.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

No Paul Weller fans? I quite like 'Our Favourite Shop' actually, moreso than Cafe Bleu...

Wish you all a pleasant summer.9vwr

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: VARIOUS “Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974: Vol 5, 1962-1966”

* I didn’t consider the Kurt Weill tribute album a compilation given the fact that producer Hall Willmer assembled an all-star cast, arranged and recorded all the songs purposely for the project.

My favourite Spanish song of 1985: Radio Futura’s "Han caído los dos"

Radio Futura (Future Radio) was, no doubt, the best Spanish rock band ever. Commanded by the philosopher Santiago Auserón, they played a pivotal part of the “Movida” sound with their first album, “Música moderna” (“Modern Music”, 1980), a hedonist and colourful work that suffered of an erroneous management promotion, selling them as teenage stars. After a long period with problems with the record company they reinvented themselves as an art-rock band with a cold-funk sound Talking Heads-style, releasing in 1984 their most acclaimed album, the conceptual “La ley del desierto / La ley del mar” (“The Law of the Desert / The Law of the Sea”), although my favourite one is their third album, “De un país en llamas” (“From a Country in Flames”, 1985). In these albums they began to introduce some Caribbean influences that increased its height in posterior albums as the great “La canción de Juan Perro” (“The Song of Juan Dog”, 1987) and “Veneno en la piel” (“Poison on the Skin”, 1990).
My favourite song of Radio Futura is not one of the most popular and well regarded ones, “Han caído los dos” (“They’ve Both Fallen Down”), despite being released as third single from the 1985 album. A song dealing (probably) with drug addiction, or maybe this is the meaning that I always wanted to find. It reminds me of two friends that had “both fallen down” into heroin addiction. He died long ago and she’s still “chasing a blinding light along the timeline”

HAN CAÍDO LOS DOS
Composers: Santiago Auserón / Luis Auserón
Performer: RADIO FUTURA
First release: 1985 (“De un país en llamas” album)
Length: 4’07”

THEY’VE BOTH FALLEN DOWN

They’ve both fallen down.

They’ve both fallen down like soldiers struck down to the floor
and now they’ve both trapped down in the same prison,
watched by the tireless eye of the fierce desire,
submitted to an unbearable tension of silence.

They’ve both fallen down under an exclusive point of view,
beginning a war that nobody could never win.
She knows what the man is waiting for without having learned it
and he found the meaning of the enigma that kept him from existing.

They were two ships adrift before, now they are two puppets
chasing a blinding light along the timeline.
They’ve both fallen down in the mouth of a sinister God
that smiles showing his steel claws.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Ah, I hadn't seen that. Thanks.

Le Pétomane: Could you give me a new #5 song? (Shout is ineligible as it turns out)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

I'll follow suit and replace "Shout" with a bit of Prince's "Raspberry".

(Why is "Shout" listed as 1984? Because of its single release?)

Guh! That breaks my heart.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Raspbarry at #3 or #5?

And yes, it's because of the single's release date.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Sorry, "Raspberry" at #3. Thanks.

It's odd that an album from 1985 would be eligible (duh), but a song from a 1985 album isn't.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Well, the rules are that we follow the release dates on AM (even if they're erroneous), and AM uses the date of first release (whether that's as a single or on an album).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Andre: Ry Cooder's Paris, Texas is listed as 1984 on AM. Wikipedia says 1985, amazon 1984 and AMG 1989.. so I have no clue which is right.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Thanks for clarifying, Stephan, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

If that's the case, then a single released in late '79 (and later released on an album in '80) wouldn't be eligible for the entire '80s poll, correct? Same goes for '69/'70, '89/'90. I understand the idea of sticking to AM rules, and I'm not even sure if this rule would actually affect the outcome of any of these decade polls, but still, it seems to me that the rules should be "bent" to allow for this. Just in case, y'know?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Then you can vote for it in the 70's poll next year.

The real reason for following the AM release year is because it's a quick reference list anyone can look at without having to debate. It's going to be wrong some of the time, but so's any other individual source.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Isn't it kind of weird including a live recording from 1963 in a 'best of 1985' list? It seems to be the kind of thing that's in the rules but not the spirit of the poll.

I think a decades old live recording is kind of like a reissue. Kind of like how I'd feel weird voting for Smile for 2004.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

About 12 hours left until the end of the month and it's turning out to be another very exciting race. In the songs poll there's up to 15 songs within close distance of each other and the albums poll is quite close too.

Vote, vote, vote!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

So do I Andre, they tend to just throw off my favorites.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

If I'd gotten more chance to listen to Joe Henderson's State of the Tenor, it might be higher. But then again, it might not. Wish I'd gotten to track down John Fogarty's Centerfield. I've never been a fan of the title song, but I tend to love his music. I don't know that 1985 had any truly great album, but it had a lot of very good ones. Here's my list--which would probably be different if I'd made it yesterday, and likely would be different if I were to make it tomorrow:

1) R.E.M. - Fables of the Reconstruction
2) Velvet Underground - VU
3) The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy & the Lash
4) Wynton Marsalis - Black Codes (from the Underground)
5) The Replacements - Tim
6) Talking Head - Little Creatures
7) Husker Du- Flip Your Wig
8) Husker Du - New Day Rising
10) Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
11) Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen
12) Keith Jarrett - Standards Live
13) The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
14) Mekons - Fear and Whiskey
15) Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair
16) Areth Franklin - Who's Zoomin' Who
17) Joe Henderson - The State of the Tenor

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Not a single one of my favorite songs made it into the top 10, even though some (again) came close. Still, I think it's a fairly solid top 10. The albums that made it to the next round are more my style, even though I (like nicolas) still don't see the appeal of the JAMC. Anyway, without further ado:

Albums
1) Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
2) The Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy
3) The Cure - The Head On My Door
4) The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy And Lash
5) Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love
6) Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen/Two Wheels Good
7) The Replacements - Tim
Hüsker Dü - New Day Rising
9) The Smiths - Meat Is Murder
10) New Order - Low-Life

Songs
1) Prince - Raspberry Beret
2) Tom Waits - Downtown Train
3) The Cure - Inbetween Days
4) The Jesus And Mary Chain - Just Like Honey

6) Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World
7) The Smiths - The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
Madonna - Into The Groove
9) Dire Straits - Money For Nothing
10) Tom Waits - Time

For the complete list, check

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Great work, Stephan! And I'm quite pleased with these results.

One correction: Moonbeam's 12 album-points went to Bryan Ferry and not Camper Van Beethoven.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Another error: My points for Prefab Sprout's "Desire As" are missing (there's a zero line for the song at the end of the sheet).

PS. Harold, I thought you would vote for this marvellous piece too?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

I wonder how those little mistakes keep sneaking in. Edited.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Very happy that Tom Waits beat JMC

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

"The Boy With The Thorn In His Side", really that's not even in the five top Smiths songs from '85.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Scritti Politti didn't even come close. Boo.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Hahaha - that's a shocker! Raspberry Beret at #1!!! Sure it's a good song, but hardly a classic or anything - I didn't see that coming at all, didn't think it would even be in the running...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Yeah, it was surprising to me too. The rest never even came close.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Stephan, not that it makes any difference for the end result, but you forgot to add the 1 point for my resubmitted album spot 20, i.e. Hüsker Dü's New Day Rising ...

You never know, this might influence somebody heavenly, when we're up for voting the 100 of the 80's ...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

I'm more songs/singles-oriented than albums (a tendency which has been exacerbated by the MP3 revolution ) so my songs were more likely to find help from others.

I didn't vote for ANY of the overall top 10 albums though. In my defense, I haven't HEARD more than 2 of them yet. (Kate Bush and the Smiths)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Glad to see my New Order boys make the list, though I'd have loved to see "Love Vigilantes" on the singles list. All you New Order fans need to dig out Technique so we can get them on the '89 list as well (and really, that was their most consistent album).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1985

Agreed Slush - I'll probably have it #2 or #3 for '89
