Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

This week I'm going to count down the eliminated. Does everybody prefer for me to every time?

Luckily, Chelsea's votes spared us from six 6 pointers and a close call list of 5 point votes.

Eliminated

When I'm 64: 10 points
For You Blue: 9 points
Blue Jay Way: 9 points
The Inner Light: 8 points
Money (That's What I Want): 8 points

Close:

Only A Northern Song, Thank You Girl, Please Mr. Postman, Slow Down, Ob La Di Ob La Da, Yes It Is

RULES: Vote for 10 Beatles songs assigning 5 points to two, 4 points to two, 3 points to two, 2 points to two and 1 point to two. Please put the point value next to each song.

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

5 songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. The deadline for submitting a list is 2PM on each elimination day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

5 points- Back in the USSR
5 points- Don't Pass Me By
4 points- Yellow Submarine
4 points- Sgt. Peppers (Reprise)
3 points- One After 909
3 points- Thank You Girl
2 points- I Me Mine
2 points- Revolution 1: There's no way I'd ever listen to this before the faster single version. It probably wouldn't be here yet if it weren't for the single, but because of it, it's kind of inessential.
1 point- Please, Mr. Postman: I'll bite on this one since it's close. It's not terrible but it's not that great either.
1 point- Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey: There are certain parts of this song I really like such as "take it easy" and the guitar work but the verses really blow.

One After 909 (2)
There's a Place (1)
Thank You Girl (1)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

Are You sure about the eliminination, John?

"I'm happy just to dance with you" got 11 points (5 points from me, 4 from chelsea and 2 from Daniel) and would have "topped" the ranking.

And "You like me too much" got 9 points (5 from honorio and 4 from Harold) and by that would have been eliminated either.

But I certainly don't mind at all, because this way "Money" has been voted off...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

5 points - I'm happy just to dance with you

4 points - There's a place
3 points - Every little thing
3 points - Only a northern song
2 points - Please Mister Postman
2 points - Baby you're a rich man
1 point - What goes on

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

No changes from last week:
5 points: “Your Mother Should Know”
5 points: “You Like Me Too Much”
4 points: “Thank You Girl”
4 points: “The Night Before”
3 points: “What Goes On”
3 points: “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da”
2 points: “Please Mr. Postman”
2 points: “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill”
1 point: “I’ll Get You”
1 point: “All Together Now”

But, boys, aren’t you judging too severely George Harrison? “For You Blue”, “Blue Jay way” or especially “It’s All Too Much” are, if not great, very good songs (in my humble opinion).

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

"Do You Want To Know A Secret" 5pts
"I'm Happy Just to Dance With You"
"Hold Me Tight"
"Slow Down"
"Rocky Raccoon"
"Your Mother Should Know"
"What Goes On" Even if it has great country styled vocal harmonies and Ringo drumming is great.
"You Like Me Too Much"
"Good Night"
"Honey Pie"

Some songs that are out already that I don't agree with. Considering the amount of people who like The Velvet Underground and garage rock here it's pretty suprising.

"Money That's What I Want- Their best cover is about as garage rock as "Louie Louie". After this song was released this song became a garage rock staple. Just compare this version to the Stones version. Lennon vocal and Ringo drumming for 1963 standard is hard rock.
"It's All Too Much"- Considering the amount of Velvet fans here I am suprised it's out. Extensive feedback droning with a modal-like tune, pop-rock backbeat, and extended improvisatory intro/outro yields an Indian/Western fusion.
"Blue Jay Way"- another drone fest song just using bass and not electric guitar on this song. The song uses the never used Lydian Mode in a rock context.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

tf: I'm think it was right but Chelsea's vote came after I tabulated the first vote but I decided to count it since there were about 7 or 8 6 point songs and I didn't want to turn away anybody's vote since I'm not getting many. So things might have been screwed up but I thought I had it worked out right... If that was the case it'll probably resolve itself on Monday.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

5 pt: Only a Northern Song
5 pts: You Like Me Too Much
Considering how many subpar tracks George wrote (sorry, but it's true), it's amazing that ALL THINGS MUST PASS turned out to be 2/3 of a masterpiece. He definitely improved with time as a writer.
4 pts: Little Child
4 pts: Good Night
3 pts: Please Mister Postman
3 pts: Slow Down
2 pts: Thank You Girl
2 pts: I Me Mine
1 pt: Hold Me Tight
1 pt: I Wanna Be Your Man

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

5 PTS. ROCKY RACCOON
5 PTS. LADY MADONNA
4 PTS. MICHELLE
4 PTS. THINGS WE SAID TODAY
3 PTS. OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA
3 PTS. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
2 PTS. YELLOW SUBMARINE
2 PTS. DON'T BOTHER ME
1 PT. LITTLE CHILD
1 PT. I'M DOWN

Can anyone explain why "Rocky Raccoon" is still hanging around?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

5 pts Please Mister Postman
5 pts Only A Northern Song
4 pts Good Night
4 pts I Don't Want to Spoil The Party
3 pts Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, The

1 pt Hey Bulldog
1 pt There's A Place

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 8 (with updates!)

Anthony: I don't know, I always kinda liked "Rocky Raccoon". Sure it's silly, and unfortunately too much of Macca's solo work takes it cues from "RR" rather than, say, "Helter Skelter", but in the context of the White Album it goes down painlessly enough.

Side note: "Ray", one of the best songs on Aimee Mann's criminally unranked I'M WITH STUPID, has an instrumental arrangement that in its particulars (acoustic guitar, tack piano, harmonium) is SO identical to "Rocky Raccoon" that it's clearly intentional, given producer Jon Brion's well-known Beatles fixation (he even credits himself as Jon "Ringo" Brion for the song's drum track in the liner notes).

Me too although I like that Paul's solo work followed the Rocky blueprint rather than Helter Skelter. The last thing we needed in the 70's was another arena rock band. His albums definitely need to grow on you but once you get past that they aren't Beatles albums they end up being pretty great.

Next cut up in 15 minutes or so.
