Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

No extras this week, but somehow three of us including the guy who is running this whole thing forgot that HONEY DON'T WAS ELIMINATED, and only one of us realized to fix that error. I don't think it would have mattered too much. This week seemed like Chuck Berry Survivor!

Eliminated:

Rock and Roll Music: 20 points
Roll Over Beethoven: 15 points
Misery: 10 points
It's All Too Much: 10 points
Words of Love: 10 points

Still here: Please Mr. Postman, Rocky Racoon, 6 others tied with 8 points.

RULES: Vote for 10 Beatles songs assigning 5 points to two, 4 points to two, 3 points to two, 2 points to two and 1 point to two. Please put the point value next to each song.

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

5 songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. The deadline for submitting a list is 2PM on each elimination day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

5 points- When I'm Sixty-Four
5 points- For You Blue
4 points- Back in the USSR
4 points- Don't Pass Me By
3 points- Yellow Submarine
3 points- Sgt. Peppers (Reprise)
2 points- The Inner Light
2 points- One After 909- This was just a call-back to their early club days. It kind of fits in on Let It Be when you consider the circumstances, but as a single it's not that good.
1 point- Thank You Girl- I'm pretty surprised this hasn't received more votes. It's a very mediocre early song.
1 point- I Me Mine- This song on the other hand does sound out of place on Let It Be. Most of Harrison's later work didn't fit with the rest of the album it was on. The only one that would have turned out to be a B-Side: Old Brown Shoe.

2 points - Only a northern song
1 point - Sun King
1 point - The inner light

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

Would 'Let It Be' be one of the worst albums released by an acclaimed band? I've seen it given the 'dud ' rating a couple of times...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

5 pts: The Inner Light
5 pts: Blue Jay Way
4 pt: Only a Northern Song
4 pts: You Like Me Too Much
(I don't hate George! Really, I don't!)
3 pts: Little Child
3 pts: Good Night
2 pts: Please Mister Postman
2 pts: Slow Down
1 pt: Thank You Girl
1 pt: I Me Mine

Sorry to see "Words of Love" exit before so many others. It's a very effective Buddy Holly cover with wonderful close harmonies from J&P and Ringo tapping out the beat on a packing case.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

I don't think so Midaso. There are great songs on that album and most acclaimed bands have at the very least, one completely terrible album.

I like Words of Love too Harold. I think some people are trying to get the covers out of the way which is understandable. The next 20 songs or so on my list are interchangeable and I suppose Words of Love would have come right after those 20 songs. So, it doesn't bother me too much. But, the instrumentation of that song is one of the coolest of their early period. Actually, Beatles For Sale is the album where the Beatles actually learned their instruments and went away from Merseybeat. Not that they couldn't play before, it just feels like a more conscious effort to make a good record rather than a hit record, and was the step they needed to take to make albums like Help, Rubber Soul and then Revolver which set up the rest of the years. Beatles For Sale just doesn't get enough credit for what it meant to the Beatles career.

5 PTS. ROCKY RACCOON
5 PTS. LADY MADONNA
4 PTS. MICHELLE
4 PTS. THINGS WE SAID TODAY
3 PTS. OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA
3 PTS. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
2 PTS. YELLOW SUBMARINE
2 PTS. DON'T BOTHER ME

*new*

1 PT. LITTLE CHILD: Another "With the Beatles" casualty. I'm kinda running out of comments for these early ones -- they're not terrible (I forget who here said it, but they couldn't have been more right... "it's still the f**cking Beatles!"), but relatively speaking, these songs are a bit forgettable.

1 PT. FLYING: Just kind of a waste of time, isn't it? Better off skipping right to the gem on MMT that follows it.

Just throwing this out there -- I'm really enjoying reading the comments from the regulars here (John, Harold, schleuse, Honorio, Midaso). It's nice to see a bit of Beatles knowledge come out and see who the real fans are. (It's kinda like seeing Bono do his philanthropic schtick; you get so used to it that when you see him perform on stage, it surprises you for a second, but then you remember that he's a really incredible musician!) I don't know if that makes any sense, but I'm tipping my hat to you guys.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

FLYING has already been eliminated...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

"Words of Love' is a great cover with great playing by George and this song had the Pre-Byrds jangle sound. The Byrds "All I Really Want to Do" written by Bob Dylan based the jangle sound on "Words of Love".

Beatles for Sale is hurt by the fact they just recorded an all original album in A Hard Days Night. Remember The Rolling Stones first all original album was Aftermath it was a rarity to make all original albums in Rock Music at the time. Beatles For Sale is strongly influenced by country and folk music "I'm A Loser" and "I Don't Want to Spoil The Party". Lyrically the themes are underated while it's not the poetic beauty of Dylan it was rare for anyone in pop music to be this self confessional and this was before Dylan went electric and the Stones "Satisfaction" The Who "My Generation".

Let it Be has three number one songs how many rock albums can say that? Plus it has "Across the Universe" and "I've Got a Feeling" live.

"Don't Bother Me" was one of those early Beatles songs that folk musicians loved for their key changes.

3 pts: Ask Me Why
3 pts: Yes It Is
2 pts: Wait
2 pts: It's Only Love

1 pt: I'll Be Back

These two 1-pointers are the last of my original shortlist, I'll have to go through the whole list again now and draw up a Mark 2 list of targets.

This week's eliminated-song-I-love is "It's All Too Much, it's probably in my top three favourite Beatles songs, sometimes number 1. Much underrated.
Ah well, we all have our special favourites that others dislike, eh?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

Old votes:
5 points: “Your Mother Should Know”
5 points: “You Like Me Too Much”
4 points: “Thank You Girl”
4 points: “The Night Before”
3 points: “What Goes On”
3 points: “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da”
2 points: “Please Mr. Postman”

New votes:
2 points: “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill”: the first vocal performance from a non-Beatle on a Beatles song was in this one. And it was from, ugh, Yoko Ono (the line “not when he looked so fierce”).
1 point: “I’ll Get You”: another not so inspired B-side
1 point: “All Together Now”: Macca has made too much children’s songs, and this one is too silly in my opinion.

Now let me stick to the ones that regret the parting of “Not a Second Time” so soon. You may find interesting an article that appeared as early as December 1963 showing that the hyperboles about The Beatles began really soon. William Mann wrote “one gets the impression that they think simultaneously of harmony and melody, so firmly are the major tonic sevenths and ninths built into their tunes, and the flat submediant key switches, so natural is the Aeolian cadence at the end of 'Not a second time' (the chord progression which ends Mahler's Song of the Earth)”. Lennon sarcastically remarked in 1980: "To this day, I have no idea what [Aeolian cadences] are. They sound like exotic birds."

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

Anthony, what are you going to replace Flying with?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

Don't get me wrong - I didn't actually think 'Let it Be' was the worst myself - just commenting on the fact that I've seen it slammed quite a bit...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

Shit, sorry. (John, maybe you could put the eliminated songs in bold, for my sake? lol)

1 PT. I'M DOWN: The Beach Boys-esque harmonies are the first strike against it. That, and the fact that it's a blatant rip-off of Little Richard is enough for me to send this one packing. (I can see why it was a b-side).

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

Just ctrl+f the list for the title, those not in the running anymore are not in the list.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

I was thinking about putting them in alphabetical order, but I think it's more fun this way watching the albums dwindle down.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

I Wanna Be Your Man (5)
You Can’t Do That (5)
I Call Your Name (4)
Slow Down (4)
Money (3)
Yes It Is (3)
I’m Happy Just to Dance with You (2)
Please Mister Postman (2)
One After 909 (1)
There’s a Place (1)

Yeah, it might help to include a list of the songs already voted off in previous rounds, plus it could be interesting to see a countdown style ranking, like:

211. Revolution 9
210. etc.
209. etc.
(those numbers were guesstimates)

Also, for the singles-only releases section, shouldn't "Revolution 1" just be listed as "Revolution"? I thought it might be good to clear that up as we wouldn't want to accidentally vote off "Revolution."

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

I could do that. It just seems like the initial post is long enough as it is. Would everyone prefer that?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

And you're right about Revolution. I've forgotten to fix that and I realized it when I was thinking about voting off Revolution 1 (the White Album version) this round. It'll be fixed in cut 8.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

An hour or so left to vote. Chelsea, you like the Beatles so much, how come you don't want to vote?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

I don't mean to pick on George but he sort of ruins some great songs with his vocals to me. Even if it was him who contributed in making some great and unusual chord usage in Lennon and McCartney songs.

1- "Do You Want To Know A Secret" I don't like the vocals. Even if it has a novelty of lyrics and chords that start the song and it appears nowhere else in the song.
2- "When I'm Sixty Four" It's to cheesy and corny
3- "For You Blue" The Beatles later stuff had better blues rock than this namely "Yer Blues"
4- "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You" George vocal just ruins it for me in a otherwise great song. Ringo drumming is excellent and George pounding 12 string work is hard for 1964 standards. Lennon should have sung lead
5- "Hold Me Tight" This is Paul worst vocal for me and that's why I am picking this song. Other than that this song rocks. Very distorted guitar sound for it's time and Ringo is again at the forefront. Very underated drummer.

In my opinion all the dreck is gone.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

Well, I don't really know what order you want the 5 points to go to. Also, you get to nominate 10 songs. I guess I'll give 5 points to #1 and #2 etc.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 7

That's fine with me John. Next round I will pick 10 songs.
