Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

Alright, no more begging. I'm just crossing my fingers that we get some more participants later in the competition or this might implode. Again, no comments are needed so you won't be trashing songs you like. Just listing them in order of preference and having some conversation as we go along.

I almost wanted to give Harold's Inner Light vote 10 points for that great dialogue. Hilarious! So, as I was saying to Anthony we have a 4 way tie for 5th this week and as the rules say: They all are saying their farewells. 8 songs this week.

Eliminated:

Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby: 18 points
Chains: 14 points
Honey Don't: 14 points
Not a Second Time: 11 points
You Really Got a Hold On Me: 9 points
Maxwell's Silver Hammer: 9 points
Baby It's You: 9 points
Till There Was You: 9 points

Thankful that they can die a natural death sometime in the future now that Maxwell's gone: Roll Over Beethoven, Blue Jay Way, Words of Love, Ob La Di Ob La Da, Rock n Roll Music

RULES: Vote for 10 Beatles songs assigning 5 points to two, 4 points to two, 3 points to two, 2 points to two and 1 point to two. Please put the point value next to each song.

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

5 songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. The deadline for submitting a list is 2PM on each elimination day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

4 points- Don't Pass Me By
3 point- Yellow Submarine
3 point- Sgt. Peppers (Reprise)
2 point- Honey Don't

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

By the way, another great song left this week in Not a Second Time.

Can't complain about the rest even though I do like Maxwell's Silver Hammer. It does sound out of place on Abbey Road but if it were on Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Peppers I think it would be more highly regarded.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

(5) Please Mister Postman
(5) Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, The
(4) Why Don't We Do It In The Road
(4) Good Night
(3) I Don't Want to Spoil The Party
(3) It's All Too Much
(2) Only A Northern Song
(2) Hey Bulldog
(1) All Together Now
(1) Little Child

C'mon people, Yellow Submarine was a contractual obligation. The Beatles didn't even do the voice-overs themselves and threw a few lame tunes at the project just to fulfil a contract. Vote them off!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

Thanks for the compliments on my "transcript". And give yourself a pat on the back if you have any idea where I got Ringo's "Where are the Cheetos?"

5 pts: The Inner Light
5 pt: Rock and Roll Music
As we continue to weed out the covers ...
4 pts: Blue Jay Way
4 pt: Only a Northern Song
3 pts: You Like Me Too Much
3 pts: Roll Over Beethoven
2 pts: Little Child
2 pts: Good Night
1 pt: Please Mister Postman
1 pt: Slow Down

I'm sorry to see "Not a Second Time" leave also. I actually think it's one of John's better early songs, even if it does have only one verse.

As for the YELLOW SUBMARINE tracks, while it's true that they are pretty much knockoffs that the band didn't want to dump on a real album, they don't all deserve to be eliminated that quickly, particularly "Hey Bulldog".

The low turnout for this, at least in these early rounds, shouldn't be that surprising. To play this game fairly, you really need to have a deep, lifelong familiarity with the catalog, and most people just don't. For those of us who do, this is a hell of a lot of fun.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

5 points - Rock And Roll Music

This is how you make an album when you have no ideas, are so exhausted you can't sing properly, and have never heard of album sequencing.

5 points - Honey Don't

This sounds like a bad outtake!

4 points - I'll Follow The Sun

Anyone can do something like this in a few minutes. But because Paul did it, it's interesting!

4 points - Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby

Not with that voice, they aren't.

3 points - Baby's In Black

How to get through a song when you are reduced to mumblin'.

3 points - I Don't Want To Spoil The Party

Song-writing auto-pilot ditty.

2 points - What You're Doing

What you're doing to me!!

2 points - It's All Too Much

And George was wondering why they weren't letting him have songs on albums. Big mystery, innit?

1 point - Only A Northern Song

HAHAHAHAHA

1 point - She's A Woman

A Beatles For Sale B-side. You know it has to be good.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

She's a Woman would be awesome if it wasn't for the horrible chorus. It fits with the song and it doesn't at the same time.

Beatles For Sale is really getting kicked around. I love that album despite the awful Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby. I can understand Please, Please Me but Beatles For Sale is when Lennon/McCartney really found their songwriting skills. It doesn't have the experimentation of the later albums, but the songwriting is still there throughout the album which can't be said about a full album before it.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

Gah. Silly me, looking in the wrong place.

5 points - Rock And Roll Music

5 points - I'll Follow The Sun

4 points - Baby's In Black

3 points - What You're Doing

3 points - It's All Too Much

2 points - Only A Northern Song

2 points - She's A Woman

1 point - Bad Boy

This would have easily gotten 5 points if it weren't for the fact that I always overlook it.

1 point - Dig A Pony

This time they went too far.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

mismaiome, I'm pretty sure "Bad Boy" is gone already too ...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

I fail again.

*new*

1 PT. DON'T BOTHER ME: Just doing a bit of housekeeping here -- an early tidbit that just doesn't pack the same punch like others of its time.

(And the early departure of "Not a Second Time" is the first surprise here, imo. I certainly don't see anything wrong with it; in fact, I've always considered it to be pretty damn good).

Just thinking out loud here.... this game's going to shift into another gear in the upcoming weeks as all the early (and questionable) material gets filtered out. Glancing at the seven remaining songs on Please Please Me, I can't see myself voting for those anytime soon. A serious reevaluation of strategy is going to be required here soon.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

In a couple weeks we're going to have 9 way ties for 5th place at 5 points a piece.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

Just so you know John, I'll probably start participating in a few weeks. There are still a few songs left that I don't really know and once they wiggle out, I'll throw in my 2-10 cents.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

Thanks. I'm hoping that some others are waiting for the same reason. I think that's the case.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

I also might join in later. This is a great game, but I just don't have time right now to listen to and rank all songs.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

Ahhh, fart. Just realized that I've still got "Honey Don't" in my list.

John - I'll post my amended ballot either later tonight or tomorrow.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

I will participate later too of course. I'm a naysayer so I can't let a chance to spew my vile (is that an English term?) on the worst band in music history slide just like that.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

The thing has game has really made me realize is how many bad songs the Beatles have actually done - here's some:

5 - Roll Over Beethoven
5 - Rock N'Roll Music
Not a big covers fan - these are pretty wooden
4 - Rocky Raccoon
4 - Why Don't We Do It In The Road
3 - The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill
3 - One After 909
2 - The Inner Light
2 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)
1 - Good Morning,Good Morning
1 - Misery

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

I missed your post Harold, you're right these early rounds are for people who know, or have the time to dive into the catalog. I've listened to the catalog so much not only can I hum the first couple bars of the next song coming up when listening to an album, I probably could remember the words to 98 percent if not all of the songs if I had to sing them in a band. Not that it would sound good. Heck, I could probably pick up a guitar and play half of them (chords only) on the spot. So, I guess I'm so used to knowing the catalog like the back of my hand that I forget that other people aren't freaks.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 6

I'm happy to announce that this is the first week in which no songs that I really like have been eliminated.

A word on the awfulness of Maxwell's Silver Hammer - a couple of years ago I saw a book for Beatles haters, called something like "How To Deal With A Beatles Fan". It gave several reasons why the Beatles weren't great, or as great as they are made out to be. And it devoted an entire chapter to just one song - "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"
