Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

And I think I'm going to change my voting a little this week. I totally blew it not putting A Taste of Honey on my list.

5 points- You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)
5 points- Devil In Her Heart
4 points- When I Get Home
4 points- A Taste of Honey
3 points- When I'm Sixty-Four
3 points- Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby
2 points- Run For Your Life
2 points- Matchbox
1 point- Her Majesty
1 point- For You Blue

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

I'm not surprised to see "Revolution 9" as the first to go and with the most votes. I'm a little surprised that "Love Me Do" got the 2nd most votes, but I was never a fan of this song, so I'm not disappointed. It should come as no surprise that the two songs that arguably prevented the Let It Be album from being ranked among the Beatles' other masterpiece albums got voted off as well (even though I actually don't mind those songs). I am very glad to see "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" getting the boot. I think that song as well as "Act Naturally" are what puts the Help! album in the same category as the Let It Be album: almost a masterpiece, if it wasn't for a few gaping holes.

Here's how I'm voting for round 2:

5 – Bad Boy
5 – I Call Your Name
4 – Rock and Roll Music
4 – Kanas City/Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey
3 – When I Get Home
3 – Matchbox
2 – Honey Don’t
2 – Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby
1 – You Can’t Do That
1 – Devil in Her Heart

anybody willing to predict which "tribe" (album) will stay completely intact the longest? The White Album, Please Please Me, and Help! have each lost a song, with Let It Be losing two already. I'm gonna guess Revolver becomes the last album to lose a song.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

5 PTS. ROCKY RACCOON
5 PTS. LADY MADONNA
4 PTS. MICHELLE
4 PTS. WORDS OF LOVE
3 PTS. HONEY DON'T
3 PTS. THINGS WE SAID TODAY
2 PTS. OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA
2 PTS. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

1 PT. A TASTE OF HONEY: Embarrassingly, I overlooked this stinker when crafting my first round votes. What reeks about it? The rhythm to start with – the waltz beat doesn’t do anything but date the song. The lyrics are ridiculous, the production is… well, typical of early Beatles recordings (which is to say, hit or miss. Frenetic, spontaneous four-on-the-floor energy a la "Please Please Me" is a hit; this song is a miss), and the over-the-top a-capella harmony that opens the song is enough to put this one into the land of Fab Four stinkers.

1 PT. P.S. I LOVE YOU: The above comments also somewhat apply to this song. Lacks any real energy and fails to leave a lasting impact as a result. (Also sounds like a Beach Boys knock-off).

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

I have a question. Even though I love the songs, are "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" eligible to vote off?

Also, as someone pointed out in round 1, you might want to include "Honey Don't," "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby," "Only a Northern Song," and "It's All Too Much" in the big list for round 3 (also, "Yellow Submarine" and "Love You To" probably doesn't need to be listed under the Yellow Submarine album, as they were both released on the Revolver album)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

I totally forgot about that Daniel, thanks for reminding me.

Free as a Bird and Real Love are not eligible.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

Has anybody ever seen Backbeat? Everytime I hear A Taste of Honey I think of that scene in Backbeat where the young Beatles are on stage in tutus. It's not the same song but it always reminds me of that scene.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

I like Dizzy Miss Lizzy so much! It's one of their covers that I mostly like... Didn't think it would be out so early!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

I have to say, I do not get why PS I Love You is getting so many votes. I think that is one of the best early Lennon/McCartney songs and one of their best ballads in the entire Beatles catalog.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

This is really fun!!!

As two of my nominated songs have already left the stage, I have two make some adjustments. Here they are:

5 Points

"Boys"
"Money"
I'm going to put my foot down: These two "jewels" will stay on top of my list until they are voted out.

4 Points

"Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey"
"I'm happy just to dance with you"

3 Points

"Flying"
"It's all too much"

2 Points

"Act naturally"
"I've got a feeling"

1 Point

"Good morning good morning"
"Wild honey pie"

As for "Love me do" I'm surprised and a bit sad that it got eliminated that early. But anyway, I'm already excited to see the results of the next round...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

5 pts: Maxwell's Silver Hammer
5 pts: P.S. I Love You

4 pts: Please Please Me
4 pts: Drive My Car

3 pts: Misery
3 pts: Matchbox

2 pts: No Reply
2 pts: Roll Over Beethoven

1 pt: If I Fell
1 pt: Wild Honey Pie

I'm disappointed (but not surprised) to see Revolution 9 go out first. But also I'm happy that my number one choice last time has also gone.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

5 pts: Devil in Her Heart
The early albums, packed as they are with nascent Lennon-McCartney brilliance, are also filled with fairly tepid covers. This one, from WITH THE BEATLES, is by far the weakest. Cha-cha-cha!
5 pts: You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)
A goofy knockoff that's fun, in its Sellers-esque way, but doesn't belong here.
4 pts: Bad Boy
4 pts: Mr. Moonlight
3 pts: Anna (Go to Him)
3 pt: Chains
2 pts: The Inner Light
2 pts: Boys
1 pt: A Taste of Honey
1 pt: Wild Honey Pie

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

tfguenther: "Money"? REALLY? The cover that's not only the exception to the rule but which Greil Marcus once wrote was a candidate for the greatest rock and roll record ever made? You sure you're not confusing it with something else?

(There are three great versions of the song, of course - Barrett Strong's Motown-inaugurating original, the Beatles' version featuring John's throat-shredding vocal, and the riotously affectless New Wave cover by the Flying Lizards: "I want your money. Give me money.")

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

Yes! REALLY!!!
I'm sure that I'm lacking the knowledge of a professional critic, it's just my personal taste.
Maybe I just don't get the greatness of the track, but on the other hand, "Love me do" is way more acclaimed than "Money" and was top of the list of some users here nevertheless.
What I especially dislike about "Money" is that annoying high-pitched response during the chorus.
"That's... what I want!" AAAARGGGHHH!!!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

Damn, Harold beat me to the Flying Lizards reference. I’ll just say to tfguenther that I understand being irritated by the “annoying high-pitched response,” but falsetto shows up all over the place in rock and roll (and in the Beatles catalog, for that matter).

I’m surprised that “Love Me Do” is already out, although it’s certainly the least of the really famous Beatles songs (I actually first learned it, with greatly modified lyrics, as the Houston Oilers’ fight song in 1979: “Love Ya Blue”). The harmonica’s the best thing about it.

Anyway, my picks:

5 PTS
Till There Was You
A Taste of Honey

4 PTS
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Anna (Go to Him)

3 PTS
Devil in Her Heart
Run for Your Life

2 PTS
Good Night
P.S. I Love You

1 POINT (New this week…like most of you, I’m continuing to cull the covers):
Mr. Moonlight
Baby It’s You

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

Same as first cut:

5 points: “Matchbox”
5 points: “You Really Got a Hold on Me”

4 points: “Your Mother Should Know”
4 points: “When I Get Home”

3 points: “You Like Me Too Much”
3 points: “Flying”

And the new ones (as I said previously, I will begin voting some covers that I feel like uninspired or inferior to the originals):

2 points: “Mr. Moonlight”
2 points: “Words of Love”

1 point: “Anna (Go to Him)”
1 point: “Devil on Her Heart”

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

Yeah, I love the harmonica in Love Me Do. I like Love Me Do a lot more than I Want To Hold Your Hand or She Loves You. It's about even with Please, Please Me.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

I'd rank the Beatles' first four A-sides this way:

1. She Loves You
2. Please Please Me
3. I Want to Hold Your Hand
4. Love Me Do (way, way too slow, at least compared to the other 3)

The underrated gem in this group is "Please Please Me"...I'm sure many of you know this story, but when they finished recording it, George Martin said, "gentlemen, you've just made your first #1." It wasn't, but the sentiment was right--imo, it's a vast improvement on Love Me Do (sorry, John).

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

Mr. Coolpants agrees with schleuse's take on "Please Please Me". The four Liverpudlians pulled that one off faster than a day-old bandaid. To this day, it remains the pinnacle of the Beatles early recordings.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

A bit of a change-up:

5pts Wild Honey Pie:Not only one of the Beatles worst songs, one of the worst songs of all time
5pts You Know My Name(Look Up The Number):Hadn't heard it before, have now and it's gotta go
4pts Maxwell's Silver Hammer:Forgot this last time - pure rubbish
4pts Her Majesty
3pts Bad Boy
3pts A Taste Of Honey
2pts Devil In Her Heart
1pt Good Night
1pt For You Blue

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 2

5 points You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
5 points Matchbox
4 points A Taste Of Honey
4 points Love You To
3 points Flying
3 points Do You Want To Know A Secret
2 points Please Mister Postman
2 points Devil In Her Heart
1 All Together Now
1 Hey Bulldog

Just a reminder to those voting: Make sure you give the most points to the songs you most want to vote off the island. Also, although there may be songs on your favourite albums that you're thinking of listing because they're not your favourites on those albums, make sure to look at songs on the less familiar albums that you may not even recall when reading the title - there's probably a reason for that - perhaps they are not memorable and should be voted off early!
