Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

I took this idea from another forum. Basically the idea is to take one of your favorite albums and rank each song from favorite to least favorite. I'll start with my favorite album of this decade- Apologies To The Queen Mary.

Wolf Parade - Apologies To The Queen Mary

1. Modern World
2. Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts
3. It's A Curse
4. This Heart's On Fire
5. I'll Believe In Anything

7. Fancy Claps
8. Shine A Light
9. Grounds For Divorce
10. We Built Another World
11. Same Ghost Every Night
12. Dinner Bells

Re: Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

I have no idea what my favorite album truly is, but I'm going to go with The Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots.

1. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1

The silliest, craziest, cutest song in the universe.

2. Fight Test

My introduction to the Lips. It left me cold at first, only to turn around entirely on the next few listens and dumbstrike me. Wayne's overlapping vocals turn it into such an inimitable picture of regret.

3. Do You Realize?

Majestic happysad song that used to make me cry. Close third.

4. It's Summertime (Throbbing Orange Pallbearers)

The soft, wounded core of the album that somehow always finds a way to cheer me up with its unrestrained magic.

5. In The Morning Of The Magicians

When I first heard this, it sounded like an unfathomable array of beautiful sounds. The stuff that dreams are made of. It still takes my mind to new places, every time I hear it.

6. Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell

It's such a happy song when you hear it, and such a sad one when you listen to it. Mesmerizing remembrances, of the wee hours of the morning. Like sleeping comfortably, but hugging your pillow.

7. Are You A Hypnotist?

Drifting along space and time. Better than any drugs in the world, if you try enough. Wonderful.

8. All We Have Is Now

The mantra at the end of the album. The truth that emerges out of the bubble, and you wish it wasn't so true for as long as it lasts, its endearing silliness aside.

9. One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21

It's a beautiful interlude, with its psychology and that of its character a bit zany, but you've been completely won over by the time it's over.

10. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 2

I'd have been happy-happy-happy if it hadn't been an instrumental, but its goofiness dragged me in and never let me get out.

11. Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia)

This song was always the worst mostly because it marked the end. It's a muted "The Great Gig In The Sky" meets an android nicknamed DaftPunkCurtisMayfield who takes sleeping pills so it can go to bed early and wake up in the secret, hidden hours of the morning that aren't on the clock, and no one knows about. I like it a lot and pretend that it's our little secret; mine and the song's, that is. Maybe someday I'll even get lost in it enough to meet DPCM.

Re: Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

1. Oh Comely
- This song I've played on my stereo and on my guitar countless times. It's a long song, but you'll never notice it, as it's so extremely exciting all the way. The day I'm tired of Oh Comely is the day I tired of life.

2. In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
- It's my first encounter with Neutral Milk Hotel, and for some reason it wasn't instant love. But after giving it a second chance, I noticed it is lovely.

3. The Fool
- If I were alive to experience it, I would have loved to have this one played at my funeral.

4. Two-Headed Boy
- This is the one that got me hooked on Neutral Milk Hotel. I borrowed some cds from my roommates to compile a party cd, and one girl had the Neutral Milk Hotel cd. I remembered it was quite good, and copied Two-Headed Boy to the cd, among some other more obvious party songs. And then I was hooked.

5. Two-Headed Boy, Part 2

6. Holland, 1945

7. King of Carrot Flowers, Part 1

8. King of Carrot Flowers, Parts 2-3

9. Ghost

10. Communist Daughter

11. Untitled

Re: Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

My favorite album is either "Who's Next" or "In The Aeroplane Over the Sea," both of which are apparently someone else's favorite also. I'll do "Aeroplane"

1. Holland, 1945
2. In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
3. Two-Headed Boy
4. Two-Headed Boy, Part 2
5. King of Carrot Flowers, Part One
6. Ghost
7. Oh Comely
8. King of Carrot Flowers, Parts Two and Three
9. The Fool
10. Communist Daughter
11. Untitled

Numbers one and two are pretty much set where they are while anything from three to seven can change on a daily basis. I feel that the last four are the weaker tracks, but they're still great. I'm not too fond of instrumentals.

Re: Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

That's funny! I'm more on par with Penguin.

Re: Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

So my actual favourite album is The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead:
1)There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
2)I Know It's Over
3)Cemetery Gates
4)The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
5)The Queen Is Dead
6)Bigmouth Strikes Again
7)Frankly Mr Shankly
8)Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
9)Vicar In A Tutu
10)Never Had No One Ever

Re: Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

This one is fun, but tough. Let's see.

1. No. 13 Baby
2. Debaser
3. Wave of Mutilation
4. Hey
5. Dead
6. Tame
7. I Bleed
8. Crackity Jones
9. Mr. Grieves
10 Gouge Away
11 La La Love You
12. Here Comes Your Man
13. There Goes My Gun
14. Monkey Gone to Heaven
15. Silver (they shoulda left this one off)

When I die and the angels ask me what I did with my life, I'll say I listened to Doolittle. If I'm talking to the devil, he'll already know.

My favorite album is London Calling, but I can't imagine ranking the songs on it--I'd have to start with #1a and end with #1s.

So, here's my second favorite:

1. Find the River
2. Nightswimming
3. Try Not to Breathe
4. Man on the Moon
5. Everybody Hurts
6. Star Me Kitten
7. Sweetness Follows
8. Drive
9. The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
10. Monty Got a Raw Deal
11. New Orleans Instrumental No. 1
12. Ignoreland

Re: Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

The Beatles - Abbey Road
[note, I generally consider "Golden Slumbers," "Carry That Weight," and "The End" to be one song, which I would rank as #1 as a whole]

1. Golden Slumbers
2. Here Comes the Sun
3. Something
4. Carry That Weight
5. The End
6. Sun King
7. Mean Mr. Mustard
8. Come Together
9. You Never Give Me Your Money
10. Octopus's Garden
11. Maxwell's Silver Hammer
12. I Want You (She's So Heavy)
13. Because
14. Polythene Pam
15. She Came in Through the Bathroom Window
16. Oh! Darling
17. Her Majesty

This is tough, because I absolutely love every one of the songs on the album. Like, I would give all of them at least 4 stars out five (the first six songs I would give 5/5)

Re: Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

Yeah, I do too Daniel. It's going to be tough voting for those songs in Beatles Survivor.

Re: Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

I'm not about to rank the songs on my favorite album (Dark Side of the Moon) either. Given the nature of that album (ie. the songs aren't exactly the most distinctive of entities like those on other albums), it seems a bit pointless.

That said, I'm ranking Radiohead's Kid A:

1. Everything in Its Right Place
2. Idioteque
3. Optimistic
4. How to Disappear Completely
5. Motion Picture Soundtrack
6. Kid A
7. Treefingers
8. In Limbo
9. The National Anthem
10. Morning Bell

Re: Rank The Songs From Your Favorite Album

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars:
First of all I must say that, although I’m glad of participating in this thread, I would never reorder this album. As I said it previously for me the sequence of the album is almost perfect and one of its most important features (the concept album, you know). Anyway:

1. “Moonage Daydream”: space-rock, woodwinds and acoustic guitars, fierce guitars and delays. I’m a space invader, I’ll be a rock & roll bitch for you. The peak of Mick Ronson as a guitar player.
2. “Ziggy Stardust”: the pivotal song about a not so imaginary rock star (Hendrix-Morrison-Reed-Iggy, although Bowie claimed that was inspired by Vince Taylor), a leper messiah killed by his fans.
3. “Five Years”: the perfect opener, a slow fade-in with the drums, and here it is, the apocalypse, only we have five years left to cry in. What a great singer is Bowie!
4. “Starman”: Judy Garland, glam-rock and space invaders. He’s a starman waiting in the sky, he’d like to come and meet us but he thinks he’d blow our minds.
5. “Rock & Roll Suicide”: the perfect closer, the dramatic crescendo, Bowie asking to his audience “give me your hands”. And stealing the line “life is a cigarette” from Spanish poet Manuel Machado.
6. “Suffragette City”: the Spiders from Mars knew how to rock hard too. Oohh, wham bam thank you ma’am!
7. “Soul Love”: 50s flavours, saxes and guitars, delicate verses and fierce chorus. New love, a boy and girl are talking new words that only they can share in.
8. “Lady Stardust”: his homage to Marc Bolan, one of his heroes. Oh! how I sighed when they asked if I knew his name.
9. “Star”: Bowie played the wild mutation to a rock & roll star.
10: “Hang on to Yourself”: good rocker, but less special than the rest of the material.
11: “It Ain't Easy: as I said it previously, Ziggy could have been much better replacing this one with “Velvet Goldmine” from the same sessions.

Got some information from fiveyears.com and allmusic.

And finally I’ve uploaded a cover of Moonage Daydream from my band. Sorry for the bad quality of the recording (only one mic for everyone) and some mistakes. And, yes, I’m the “guitar hero” on the last 2 or 3 minutes of the song. Hope you like it…
