Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

"Pumped Up Kicks" should be labeled a 2010 song.

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

I think this confirms that this was a year without a lot of great consensus-building singles. Last year, we had songs like "Tightrope," "Dancing on My Own," and "Shutterbug" that were liked pretty much across the board by all types of listeners and seemed obvious for inclusion in year-end lists.

Not so much this year (though I'm on record as saying The Words That Maketh Murder should be, I am surprised it's ranked as high as 14th). This is exactly the kind of a year a very good but not huge band like M83 might get itself a SOTY.

On another note, I did not expect "Pumped Up Kicks" to receive this kind of acclaim. Maybe it's just the small sample size of lists right now.

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

Definitely a poor year for songs -- I just don't see any standouts and the lists that I've seen confirm that thought. I can't imagine M83's "Midnight City" as number one for the year, but then again, I can't see any of these songs considered great. I actually contributed to the PopMatters list, but I can say that I'm not familiar with most of those songs. This looks to be a year that won't show up well on the all-times lists.

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

Isn't Rolling In The Deep pretty consensus?

I don't like anything else on the album, but man what a single.

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

Penguin
Definitely a poor year for songs

You can say that again. Especially for me, since I prefer rock music.

I'm trying to make an EOY top 5, and considerings:

Strokes - Machu Picchu

Noel Gallagher - If I had a Gun ( Very far from my favorite Noel song)

Black Keys - Lonely Boy

Stephen Colbert and The Black Belles - Charlene II ( Yes, a joke song)

So it's weak, and the rest of my considered songs are even more weak.

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

This feels like a silly post when there are more relevant things to think about, like Nicolas' question about indie domination (which I will have plenty to say about tomorrow). But this evening I'm catching up on what the critics perceived to be the best songs of the year. First thoughts? Well, one of my first thoughts is that it says quite something about the catchiness of a song when this gay man can't help but find himself singing: "Oooh Nooo. Tell me where that pussy gone. Cause it don't feel the same no more. I miss that pussy, that pussy, that pussy..."

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

Updated with...

USA: Amazon, Consequence of Sound, Pretty Much Amazing, Spin
UK: Gigwise
Mexico: Club Fonograma

Thanks Chris!

Well I guess we all miss something

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

Updated again (Spin removed (Charles Aaron only))

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

There's been a little mistake. The Consequence of Sound and Rolling Stone positions you accounted for Run the World are actually for Countdown. Both from Beyoncé though

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

Hmmm... of the current top 10 only 1 of them will be in my own top 10 (James Blake's The Wilhelm Scream... and maybe Helplessness Blues but there are other songs on the Fleet Foxes album I like more). And of the current top 50 only 7 of them will be in my own top 50. In other years it's usually about 5 out of 10 and 20 out of 50.

I guess the list can still change, and in a year when nobody really had a clue what the top 10 songs would look like before the critcs lists started coming in, it shouldn't really be a surprise that my individual list will look very different to the critics' overall list.

Still... M83's Midnight City is very decent synth pop, but the song of the year? And I was worried that Adele's Rolling in the Deep was going to overtake it, but fortunately that doesn't seem possible anymore. The woman clearly has a strong pair of lungs on her, but maybe a bit too strong for my liking. Every time I listen to the song I think: Tone it down, dear. There's no need to shout. You're not on X Factor.

OK, time for me to shut up and stop being so unusually grumpy... and continue to be baffled that I'm losing touch with the critics while secretly being pleased that I'm paying attention to my own opinions rather than those of the critics this year.

Henrik - why was Spin removed?

The list seems to be from just one critic (Charles Aaron). Single critic lists are not eligible because it would be too many list to handle.

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

Wow, if this is close to what the final list will look like.. that's perhaps the oddest yearly AM list I have ever seen.

Am I so out of touch with music?

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

I don't understand why PJ Harvey is doing so badly in the songs lists.

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

Frank Ocean - Swim Good is listed twice and should be 58th overall, a much more rewarding rank for this wonderful song !

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

Is this the final list, or is an update coming?

Re: EOY Songs 2011: Update thread

There are about 10 more lists I have to add. I've been busy at work lately, but will hopefully have it done this weekend.
