#11 The Jackson Five
#10 Duke Ellington (tough to vote against Marvin)

#7 The Zombies (tough matchup for The King!)
Buddy Holly (Just an impossible choice. These are two titans of 50s rock, on a level just below Chuck Berry. The case for Little Richard is that he’s outrageously exuberant compared to Buddy’s somewhat constrained, not to say mannered, performing style. The case for Buddy is that he was a bit more musically inventive. As is often the case with me, I just went with the one from Texas.)
The Jackson 5 (The Doors’ entire catalog doesn’t stand up to “I Want You Back.”)
Duke Ellington (An impossible choice, but for a different reason. Ellington is clearly one of the most accomplished musicians – popular or otherwise – of the last 100 years. Marvin is great, but not quite on that level; however, he’s much closer to the musical tradition which the UMT celebrates in general. So, what to do? I love Marvin, but I think What’s Going On is overrated. And I have been a consistent champion of Ellington on this forum – I think for a lot of people, his pre-hard bop, pre-modal jazz sounds kinda musty. So I’ll give him the props.)
Jimi Hendrix
Parliament/Funkadelic (Similar to the Duke/Marvin matchup, but I’m going the other way this time. Sorry, Louis.)
