Re: Artist of the Week: Week 1

I figured considering my recent admission of my love for Elton John in one of the weeks of Bracketology, I was probably expected to post my top songs of EJ. So here goes...

1. Tiny Dancer
I can trace my entire love for popular music back to this one song. Back in '98, Rosie O'Donnell had Elton as a guest on her talk show. I was kind of a fan, so I watched it, and the song he played was "Tiny Dancer." I'd heard it before, but that was the first time I really listened to it and I was knocked over by how beautiful it was. I knew I had to have that song, so I went out and bought Elton's "Greatest Hits, Vol. 2". I must have worn out that CD. Not long after that, I started buying all of Elton's CDs. Then it was on to other artists, other genres, etc. But it all comes back to "Tiny Dancer."
2. Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)
There's a reason why his nickname is "Rocket Man."
3. Amoreena
Little-known fact: There is NO music in the movie "Dog Day Afternoon" except for this song, which plays over the opening credits (and another song that can be heard on a radio during the movie).
4. Your Song
His first big hit is easily his most recognizable and definitely his signature song.
5. Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me
For a version of this that maybe equals the original, search out Oleta Adams' rendition.
6. Someone Saved My Life Tonight
It's actually about how Elton almost got married, but someone "saved" him from what might have been a disastrous marriage.
7. Ticking
The closer from "Caribou," this one still gives me chills. Maybe Bernie Taupin's best lyrics.
8. Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
9. Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
10. Bennie and the Jets
11. Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word
12. I Don't Wanna Go On with You Like That
13. Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)
14. Bad Side of the Moon
Originally the b-side to "Border Song."
15. Sad Songs (Say So Much)
16. Take Me to the Pilot
17. I'm Still Standing
18. Border Song
19. Come Down in Time
20. The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909-34)
21. My Father's Gun
22. Into the Old Man's Shoes
Originally the b-side to "Your Song."
23. Can I Put You On
24. Honky Cat
25. I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues

...and that song on the radio is The Faces' "Stay With Me."

I started buying all of Elton's CDs.

Do you even have his slammed 'Leather Jackets' album? Or that album with the disastrous version of Johnny B Goode?

4. Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting

You should listen to Madman Across the Water

Re: Artist of the Week: Week 1

Madman Across the Water and Honky Chateau are Elton's best two albums in my opinion.

I have both. "Leather Jackets" is pretty much worthless and only of interest to completists like me. The other album is called "Victim of Love" and even Elton has disowned that album. Rightfully so, it's easily his worst album.

I second that. Madman Across the Water and Honky Chateau are two of his best, but I'd probably take Tumbleweed Connection over either of them (and even GYBR). There are no big hits on it, but there are some wonderful songs on there (I think I listed at least three on my Top 25), and the whole thing just works really well as a whole.

Sorry about the delay, here are the results:
1- Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (241 points)
2- Tiny Dancer (236)
Tie 3- Rocket Man (191)
Tie 3- Your Song (191)
5- Bennie and the Jets (147)
Tie 6- Crocodile Rock (117)
Tie 6- Candle in the Wind (117)
Tie 6- Daniel
9- Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting (116)
10- Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding (88)

After that, the list is all over the place. two other songs (Don't Let the Sun go Down On Me & I Guess That's Why they Call it the Blues) Scored more than 80 points. I must admit at first glance I thought Tiny Dancer had an easy victory with Your Song as a close second. So, in two weeks of Artist of the week, the heavy favorite has lost. I wonder if this patern will continue.
