Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

First, I want to ask a quick question. Is there anybody who does not participate in the moderate poll who would start to participate if the third round and on had two matchups per week instead of four? I'll only do that if I know for a fact it'll allow more people to play.

Now, here are this week's matchups:

Division 1:
4 Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence
#1037, 1966, def 13 Bill Evans - Conversations With Myself
vs
5 Nico - Chelsea Girls
#2507, 1967, def 12 Cat Stevens - Teaser and the Firecat

Division 3:
3 The Replacements - Tim
#508, 1985, def 14 The Cranberries - Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We?
vs
11 They Might Be Giants - Flood
Unranked, 1990, def 6 Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever

One of the three albums in the second round to be pushed out of the 3000 with the update versus one of the highest AM ranked albums in the tournament.

Division 5:
2 Elliot Smith - XO
#575, 1998, def 15 The Dandy Warhols - Come Down
vs
10 PJ Harvey - Is This Desire?
#1811, 1998

Division 7:
1 The Go Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike
#1913, 2004, def 16 The Decemberists - Her Majesty
vs
9 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell
#781, 2003, def 8 Annie - Anniemal

The Go Team lost 500 positions in the update. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs gained 200. TLS was the lowest overall seed to get a #1 seed. I think this may be an interesting matchup.

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

5. Nico

3. The Replacements

2. Elliott Smith

1. The Go Team

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

Elliott Smith - XO : top 20 of all time for me, including my favourite song ever

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell : following the buzz and first single of each album, Fever to Tell was a bit of a deception. But The Go Team was a huge deception, should be great, totally sucks !

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

Division 1:
5 Nico - Chelsea Girl

Division 3:
11 They Might Be Giants - Flood

I was a TMBG fanboy in a past life, so even though I love a lot of Tim, I've got to give Flood my vote.

Division 5:
2 Elliott Smith - XO

Division 7:
1 The Go Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

TLS is a great album!

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

Division 1:
4 Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence

Division 3:
11 They Might Be Giants - Flood

Division 5:
I can't decide.

Division 7:
1 The Go Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

I would support anything that gives me a better chance to listen to more albums in this competition. If there were a max of four possible albums to listen to each week (with the high likelihood that I've heard one or more), I can probably manage that into my listening schedule.

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

NICO “Chelsea Girl”

It hurts not to vote for S&G but the first album from the Ice Queen has a mesmerizing beauty that I cannot resist.

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS “Flood”

An astonishing display of imagination, playfulness and pop wizardry.

ELLIOTT SMITH “XO”

I like that PJ album but “XO” is one of the most serious contenders for the final tournament.

YEAH YEAH YEAHS “Fever to Tell”

“Karen O’s unearthy voice” (quote from allmusic) is reason enough.

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

4 Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence

11 They Might Be Giants - Flood

2 Elliot Smith - XO

1 The Go Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

The Replacements - Tim

Elliot Smith - XO

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell

I'm going to hold off on voting on the first bracket.

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

Nico - Chelsea Girls

They Might Be Giants - Flood

PJ Harvey - Is This Desire?

The Go Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

Chelsea girls

Flood

XO

Thunder, Lightning, Strike.

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

My votes:

5 Nico - Chelsea Girl

I gave Sounds of Silence another chance, it still does not impress me except for the title track.

1 The Go Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

Very tight vote for me.

Other two: Abstain unless there's a tiebreaker.

Tim and Flood are two albums I don't have strong feelings about either way. Tim is like Let It Be on mood stabilizers, and Flood is just a little too cute for it's own good.

Then XO vs Is This Desire are two albums I'd take over either Tim or Flood, but have no idea which I'd take over the other.

One more day to vote. The closest brackets this week are separated by three votes, with another serious upset in the making. But, there are enough usual names that haven't voted yet they could still be flipped.

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

Time to even things up a bit then...

Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence
They Might Be Giants - Flood
Elliot Smith - XO
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

4. Simon & Garfunkle - Sounds of Silence

3. The Replacements - Tim

2. Elliott Smith - XO

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

Need to get my vote in here before it's too late.

Nico gets my first vote. This is pretty tight, could have gone either way.

No doubt in the second match, They Might Be Giants is one of my favorite bands ever, so I won't even consider The Replacements. Funny that TMBG once recorded a song called "We're The Replacements"

While Elliott Smith is good, I'm not a great fan of all his albums, so the third nod is given to PJ Harvey.

And match for is all about Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Re: Best Moderately Acclaimed Album: Round 2, Week 3

There were a lot of first time voters this week. It looks like it was a good idea to move the vote to a thread instead of email, and it is a good idea to go down to two matchups per week when we get to the third round.

For new voters, here's a link to the full bracket: http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=329857&tclass=

This week's results:

5 Nico - Chelsea Girl 9 def
4 Simon and Garfunkel 5

Chelsea Girl faces 16 Brigitte Fontaine - Comme a la Radio in the third round.

11 They Might Be Giants - Flood 10 def
3 The Replacements - Tim 4

In another major upset, one of the three albums in the draw pushed out of the AM 3000 by the update knocks off one of the highest ranked albums in the tournament.

2 Elliot Smith - XO 11 def
10 PJ Harvey - Is This Desire 3

Board favorite Elliot Smith moves on to face Beck - Mutations.

1 The Go Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike 9 def
9 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell 6

The most vulnerable #1 seed left moves on in a close vote.
