It is a damned shame that the USGS took down the memorial page to Dr. David Johnson off of their web site. I had to use the internet wayback machine to find the last stored snapshot of the page. I thought that they would of had the decency and respect for one of their own people, who had given so much to the study of vulcanology, to preserve something of his memory and his sacrifice. |

I admire the work of David Johnston and I will definitely visit Mt. St. Helens and visit the observatory bearing his name. I experienced the eruption of the volcano at the age of 13 and saw the pictures on TV. At the time, I did not know that a great scientist and his friend Harry R. Truman had lost their lives. With best regards from Germany. Udo Harenkamp, Einbeck-Opperhausen |

My prayers are with Dave and his family and all of his USGS colleagues from those days. Prayers are with all those who do similar work. We live in a dynamic world, let the science go on for the sake of the people, politics have no place here. 8TTF |

This site was very informative and gave us all the information we needed about a volcanologist and a U.S. volcano. It was for a fourth grade science report for my stepson. Mr. Johnston seemed so real, intelligent and hard-working. He was a great person to choose for a report. This article will help a lot of fourth graders remember about him and Mt. St. Helens eruption. Thank you for you site. It was very educational for me as well. |

David will never be forgotten, nor was his death in vain. His presence will always resonate Mt St Helens. I was 14 years old when Mt St Helens erupted and living in Saskatoon Sask. I remember my family was in awe as we had friends and family living in the area. It was an OMG and WOW at the same time. Anyways fast forward. I was in university (UofS) in 1989 and needed a science to supplement my acceptance to law school and I chose Geology. It was an intense but fun class for me. The first call of order was Mt St Helen\'s and the 1980 eruption. We were shown the pics that Keith & Dorothy Stoffel took of the exploding Mt. Then was the reality of being a geologist and the respected one, David. In absolutely every Geology class I have took, David is the first and front man on Volcanos. I first was informed of his story in 1989 and to this day I make sure people know who he was, his passion for volcanology and the safety of the people. Also ALL Geology profs young and old respect him and keep his legacy going. This site is awesome! This man has to be recognised for the brilliant scientist that he was and humanitarian. He was not lost in vain. Rest in Peace dear man. You are the main contributor in Geological studies at Universities these days. Lost but never forgotten. Maria Trakadas |

I first learned about Johnston a few days ago, after watching Dante\'s Peak (the movie) and learning that the last scene of the movie is a picture of Mt. St. Helens. After reading about the mountain (remembered its eruption in 1980), I first learned about Johnston. For the past few days, I have read everything possible that I can get my hand on about this remarkable man and scientist. What a fabulous person and hero! He is to be admired. I keep telling myself to let go of this story...but I am drawn to it and want to learn so much about Mt. St. Helens and David Johnston. I majored in Marine Science, however, had I read more about this man and this story...I probably would have ended up being drawn to this profession, too. David Johnston and all the people who was instrumental in saving lives that day are to be commended. Had he not done what he did, so many more would have perished. He will be forever remembered by me. |

While attending the College of Fisheries at the UW I got to know Dave's roomate at Haggett (spelling?) Hall, Rich Condan I think his name was. I can still remember Dave's face even though I only saw him a few times at the dorm. Great guy! Hearing his last words on the evening news was a shock and I still feel for his family to this day. It was fitting for Dave though. His utter love for volcanology had to be surpased only by love of his family, so I believe that love of his family was great indeed.... |

Nobody wants to die. We all want to live as long as possible doing what we love to do. So what made David stay the night before? What made him stay that morning? It was his love for volcanos, his awe for this earth, his thirst for knowledge, & most importantly, his constant caring & safe-keeping of his fellow man. Like he said, that's what being a scientist is. This man stood 5 or 6 miles from an active volcano until the very end gathering data & reporting on it. Not many of us would have done that. Then again, many of us won't be remembered for being a hero & saving countless lives. You will never ever be forgotten. You live on in memory, spirit, & mind. Through the people you saved & their children, & their children. And through everyday people who do extraordinary things to help their brothers and sisters... like you did. |

I climbed St Helens in August 2011 and visited many sites including Johnston Ridge. I wish I had acquired my passion for geology some thirty years ago. I understand David's passion just by visiting this monument. He only lived 30 years, but they were of a quality that few of us can equal. Thank you for this wonderful tribute to an amazing man. I kinda met David Johnston, I was only 7 years old, and me and my sis and parents were one of the sightseers he "chased away" from the volcano. LOL! He was nice about it though, I remember he and my father chit chatting for a bit. I didn't think much of him then because I was so young, but now, having seen interviews, reading magazine articles, and becoming something of a huge fan of Mount St. Helens over the recent years, I can say with a good degree of certainty that David Johnston was a cool guy! And we needn't mourn him. I'm sure he went to Heaven with the biggest, and brightest smile on his face. He died doing what he loved. There is no greater honor than that! |
