Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Oh yeah, mistake!
I already voted for it in 1981!
20. Public Image – This Is Not A Love Song

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

1983. Probably the happiest year of my life. The last year of High School and the first of University and, in the middle, what a summer!. Sade, my band then, we’ve just obtained some recognition with our first single and we spend the summer touring and recording our next record (don’t bother to listen to it, now it simply sounds awful). Anyway it was a wonderful period of discovering, and Aztec Camera’s “Walk Out to Winter” was the perfect soundtrack. Maybe the songs on my list are not that good as I remember, but most of them are blurred by a (dummy) haze of happiness.

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: THE CURE “Japanese Whispers”

My favourite Spanish song of 1983: Golpes Bajos’ "No mires a los ojos de la gente"

The release of the first album of Golpes Bajos (“Low Blows” came as a shock for all the people (like me) that were devoted followers of Siniestro Total (“Totaled” or “Written Off” . Siniestro was a Galician punk band influenced by Dead Kennedys or Ramones that made irresistible funny songs with song titles as “All Hanged Die Hard-On”, “The Tits of My Girlfriend” or “My Ball Itches” (see the funny cover of the last one here parodying the “London Calling” cover with a Galician pipe instead the electric bass). The lead singer, Germán Coppini, left the band in 1983 when they were leading the independent scene to form Golpes Bajos with multi-instrument player Teo Cardalda and surprised everyone with his 180 degrees turn. Where there was simplicity now there was complexity, where there were guitars now there were keyboards and where there were jokes now there was introspection. Coppini uncovered his sensitive and tormented side delivering a brief but intense set on songs about isolation, fear, confinement, sickness and death.
The opener of the album was “No mires a los ojos de la gente” (“Don’t Look at the People’s Eyes”) and defined perfectly the ambiance. The arrangements fused the era synth-pop (with rhythm boxes and keyboards) with funk (the slap bass of Luis García and the guitars of Pablo Novoa). And the lyrics: “The song became a hymn for the introversion” (Ángel Carmona), “Coppini lyrics portrait with extreme ability feelings like the paranoia, the solitude or the terror of the misunderstood adolescents (or post-adolescents) to socialize” (Diego Onde).

NO MIRES A LOS OJOS DE LA GENTE
Composers: Teo Cardalda / Germán Coppini
Performer: GOLPES BAJOS
First release: 1983 (“Golpes Bajos” mini-album)
Length: 3’43”

No mires a los ojos de la gente,
me dan miedo,
siempre mienten.
No salgas a la calle cuando hay gente,
¿y si no vuelves?,

Quédate a mi lado,
no te marches más.

No mires a los ojos de la gente,
me dan miedo,
siempre mienten.
No salgas a la calle cuando hay gente,
¿y si no vuelves?,
¿y si te pierdes?

Escóndete en el cuarto de los huéspedes,
todo está a oscuras,
no pueden verte.
Seguro que en la calle ahora habrá gente,
alguien te busca,
alguien lo siente.
Alguien lo siente.

Quédate a mi lado,
no te marches más.

Quédate a mi lado,
no te marches más.
Quédate a mi lado,
no te marches más.

DON’T LOOK AT THE PEOPLE’S EYES

Don’t look at the people’s eyes
they scare me,
they always lie.
Don’t go out on the street when there are people.
What if you don’t come back?
What if you get lost?
What if you get lost?

Hide into the guest room,
everything’s in darkness,
no one can see you.
Surely now on the streets there will be people,
somebody’s looking for you
somebody’s noticing it.
Somebody’s noticing it.

Stay by my side,
don’t go away anymore.

Don’t look at the people’s eyes
they scare me,
they always lie.
Don’t go out on the street when there are people.
What if you don’t come back?
What if you get lost?

Hide into the guest room,
everything’s in darkness,
no one can see you.
Surely now on the streets there will be people,
somebody’s looking for you
somebody’s noticing it.
Somebody’s noticing it.

Stay by my side,
don’t go away anymore.

Stay by my side,
don’t go away anymore.
Stay by my side,
don’t go away anymore.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Minor song change

Put R.E.M.'s "Talk About the Passion" at No. 18 and move the other three songs down appropriately. Thanks.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Snusmumrik, we have the same first (but not in the same order)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

If you asked my dad to make a 1983 list he'd probably include "Outfidels", which he thinks is not only underrated but better than Infidels.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Nicolas,
that's cool. And actually I used to like Mellencamp's uh-huh *really* a lot. I guess I just neglected to get a copy after moving out of the place where a guy used to play it.

BillaAdama,
I wouldn't quarrel with anyone who rates the Infidels outtakes above the stuff that actually went on the album. After all, Blind Willie McTell is an Infidels outtake not released until 1991. And then there's "Foot of Pride" and two other fine songs on the Bootleg Series 1-3 box. And a killer cover of Willie Nelson's "Angel Flying too Close to the Ground", and ....

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

There are still great songs on Infidels

Like "Neighborhood Bully" or "Man Of Peace"

Great lyrics, for once very straightforward, and great guitar duo : Knolpfer and Mick Taylor.

the only weird thing is Sly & Robbie, who don't always fit with the songs.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

1984 marks a new era somehow...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I keep thinking that because it peters out toward the end that I should move She's So Unusual down a few slots, but then I think just how good and varied most of it is, and I can't do it. I also am tempted to move Punch the Clock up because I get almost giddy everytime I listen to it--but then I have to admit it is a bit of a mess, nonetheless. As for Synchronicity, I just keep wishing that lyrically there wasn't so much pretentious twaddle on it. Infidels might deserve to be higher; for some reason I'd never listened to the whole thing until quite recently, so I can't say I've fully digested it. If Dylan left "Blind Willie McTell" off because it was "never fully developed," then I suspect he should leave more of his songs not fully developed.

Albums:

1) Murmer - REM
2) War - U2
3) Meat Puppets II - Meat Puppets
4) Swordfishtrobones - Tom Waits
5) She's So Unusual - Cyndi Lauper
6) Punch the Clock - Elvis Costello
7) Speaking in Tongues - Talking Heads
8) Hootenanny - The Replacements
9) Out of Step - Minor Threat
10) Infidels - Bob Dylan
11) Field Day - Marshall Crenshaw
12) High Land, Hard Rain - Aztec Camera
13) Synchronicity - The Police
14) Texas Rain - Stevie Ray Vaughan

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Oops, that of course should be "Texas Flood" by SRV, not "Texas Rain."

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I called Texas Flood "Texas Rain," I spelled Murmur "Murmer," and I left the "m" out of Swordfishtrombones. Three strikes and I'm out.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Especially the albums had an exciting race for the top 10 with Madonna, Aztec Camera, ZZ Top and Cyndi Lauper all being in 9th or 10th place at one point, but eventually they were all overtaken by Dylan in a last-minute sprint which made him end up with a mere 1 point more than Madonna. Murmur almost made it to as much points as "Remain In Light", even though it's the first album to finish first without having any songs in the top 10. In the songs department I was especially surprised by Billy Bragg, who I'm gonna have to look into. Even though both of her songs were in or near the top 10 at one point Cyndi Lauper lost here too, unfortunately.

Albums
1) R.E.M. - Murmur
2) Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones
3) U2 - War
4) Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
5) New Order - Power, Corruption And Lies
6) The Police - Synchronicity
7) Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues
Meat Puppets - II
9) Metallica - Kill 'Em All
10) Bob Dylan - Infidels

Songs
1) New Order - Blue Monday
2) U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
3) The Smiths - This Charming Man
4) Bob Dylan - Blind Willie McTell
5) Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
6) Violent Femmes - Blister In The Sun
7) The Police - Every Breath You Take
This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren
9) Billy Bragg - A New England
10) Talking Heads - Burning Down The House

These and everything that didn't make it:

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I'm gutted that Madonna fell just short!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Great list. I'm glad to see the Dylan love although “Blind Willie McTell” is technically a 1991 song (in the same way that Big Star’s “Sister Lovers” is a 1978 album and not 1974).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

great to see A New England in the list. slight hope has risen in me since I noticed the increased nominations in the individual lists, but now it's ...uhm... officially certified..

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

it's not that I want to be that picky, but apart from our Huey Lewis alliance, Greg and I are still two different persons

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

oh, that applies the excel sheet, btw...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Heh, that's strange. No idea what happened there.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

whatever. as I said before, no big thing... but seeing Greg sacrifice 9 points to Filth is kind of - and somewhat amusing. how many spots do I actually owe you now, Greg??

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

As excited as I was to see an obscure Frank Zappa album get one additional point, it looks like poster Ze did not actually give one point to The Man From Utopia, like the spreadsheet says.

I really don't mean to be extra super picky, but with all this information coming into you, there might be certain mistakes that come up and I just want to make you aware of them. As this year's list show, one point can make all the difference!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Every year there are bound to be a few mistakes, and I really appreciate that some of you look through the list and point them out. Perfection is important, after all.

Corrected both mistakes.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

haha, doh, i didn't get to see it. were nj and i somehow conflated? and did i somehow vote for swans? that is rather amusing

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

yes, you were soooo swanalicious, Greg, you wouldn't believe it yourselve. too bad I didn't make a screenshot of this spreadsheet... (obnoxiously exaggerating, but still bewitched by the reborn kiddie beast in mr. maurer, nj)

ps: Stephan, I don't want to emphasize it again, but... the work that you put in that project is admirable, some mistakes however remain, well.. adorable...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

The only one this time I don't either have or dislike is Speaking In Tongues. Maybe I'll pick that up. Also might have to pick up Porcupine just because I like Crocodiles and Ocean Rain.

Every breath you take, I'll be stalking you...

(Seriously. Imagine singing that song from behind a telescope.)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Greg: I attributed every album from netjade's list to your name unless netjade and you both picked the same album (which was twice, I believe) so you had 38 entries and netjade had 2. Didn't make a difference for the score, just a little weird. And thanks netjade.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

The Bob Dylan and Billy Bragg songs become the first two to advance that I've never heard
How can so many people have that anthology with 'Blind Willie McTell' on it? It costs loads

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

It's only $20. Dylan (2007 compilation, around the same price), The Essential Bob Dylan (Australia/NZ release only, around $14 on amazon I think) both have the song as well.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I was sooooooooo close to give Madonna one or two points...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Stephan, my 18 points in the song poll went to Depeche Mode's "The Great Outdoors" and not Cocteau Twins' "In the Gold Dust Rush".

I'm glad I got this extra opportunity to write about Depeche Mode and the B-sides of their singles. Everyone seemed to collect Depeche Mode's "extra material" in the '80s. My guess is that no other band has sold more maxi-singles (at least in Sweden). The B-sides show a less commercial, more experimental side of Depeche Mode, with some songs ("Now This Is Fun", "In Your Memory") that get you wonder how it's possible to put so many rhythms and sounds together at the same time, while other songs are dark instrumentals (e.g. "Christmas Island"). But my favourite of them all is "The Great Outdoors" (the flipside of "Get the Balance Right"), which sounds like a barrel-organ blended with some dark and weird (i.e. wonderful) sounds.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

You're welcome. And that is one strange error, I wonder why I did that..

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Sorry to be picking without saying thanks.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Heh, no problem. I meant "You're welcome" in response to the "I'm glad I got this opportunity" sentence.
