Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

1983, year 4. Peter Frandon died of a drug overdose and only a few months later the current #1 in most drug-overdose-polls, Amy Winehouse, was born. 1983 was, much more than 1982, the year of Thriller as well as the year Bauhaus, Blondie, Roxy Music and The Who disbanded. Enjoy voting for what I personally believe is the best (songs-)year of the 80s.

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per album. The deadline is midnight on the 31st of May. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

Please have a look at the 1983 album and song lists before voting, as albums and songs listed under 1983 at Acclaimed Music will only be counted in the forum poll if they are included in this month's ballots.

I knew this day would come..."I Will Follow" IS a 1980 song! I replace it with "Sunday Bloody Sunday" but at 30th place.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I take it you don't want Cyndi to get 6 points for that last song?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Yes Fred, excellent #1 album pick!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

nice, nj

i owe you a "spot"

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Thanks! Maybe I'm not totally unlike you guys. :)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I meant the song #1 though, but Henrik is probably just being a meanie.

And no, you're not so different. After all, you're posting on this board with the rest of us.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Tom Waits will be to the 80's list what Blur was to the 90's list. Both thorns in my side.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

This is going to be brutal, for songs at least. 1983 is probably my favorite year in music. It will be very hard to vote for only 20 songs, when I probably like my 100th favorite song from 1983 more than my 20th favorite from most years of the 90s.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

After reviewing all the albums I'm familiar with for 1983, I could only come up with a list of thirteen that were worthy. Songs, as usual, to come later.

1. The Police - Synchronicity
2. R.E.M. - Murmur
3. U2 - War
4. Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues
5. Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual
6. Aztec Camera - High Land, Hard Rain
7. Marshall Crenshaw - Field Day
8. Metallica - Kill 'Em All
9. Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones
10. Richard Thompson - Hand of Kindness
11. John Cougar Mellencamp - Uh-Huh
12. ZZ Top - Eliminator
13. Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

1983 is indeed the best 80's year! Hope to make it until end of month to do all the relistening ...

How come the Blue Nile is listed in AM as 1984, where it is released in 1983 in both UK and US? I have the vinyl LP and it clearly says 1983. Henrik?

Anyway, summer has finally come to Europe. Enjoy the pentecost weekend!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Rocky: Radio Free Europe is 1981 song, it finished #2 in that year.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Err.. I meant commander Adama, not Rocky.

I don't know. Probably it was released at the end of 1983 and occured in EOY lists from 1984. But on the other hand, Simple Minds' "Sparkle in the Rain" from 1984 is listed as 1983. Oh, these errors...

6. Violent Femmes- ST
7. Def Leppard- Pyromania

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I've been assuming any song on a 1983 album is 1983. If not, then I may need a rundown of what exactly counts as 1983 and what doesn't. (And for that matter, what songs on 1984-1985 albums are really 1983.)

In about two years we'll need to have a 2005/2008 debate for Robyn, won't we?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I think my interpretation of the rules is that whatever AM year is assigned to a song or album is the one we use. In addition, any single that appears on AM for a given year should count for that year, even if it appears on an album in a later year.

I'm picking out my favorites from 1983-released albums then checking the AM list to see if they were recognized in earlier years.

But what of album tracks that were released as singles earlier but didn't rate enough significance to be on the AM Top 3000 Songs? I would say that their lack of presence on the 3000 signifies the lack of strength as an earlier single and is more identified as a strong album track. Since others might be using their favorite albums from the year and picking out songs for their lists, it might be asking too much to make sure every album track was not released earlier. Tough call, but nothing's perfect.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Jonah is right. If singles were released before the albums they're on we use the single release date. AM dates override everything though, so if a song happens to be released a year before an album but AM has both (erroneously) in the same year, the same year is used.

I know it's slightly confusing, but it has worked last decade. As far as Robyn goes, I think it's fairly simple.. all songs that were on the 2005 release are 2005 releases, the new songs on the 2007 release are 2007 releases.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

The issue with Robyn though is, she didn't make the AM list in 2005, but with the reviews coming out now she probably will now.

She has three versions of the album released in three years in three different places, didn't get many good reviews until the last one came out, and only one song made it in 2005.

My question about singles from albums after 1983 is...

A: How do I know if something isn't 1983 aside from searching back every previous year?
B: How do I know a song was released in 1983 if it's not on the AM list?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I think there's only 2 versions, the 2005 one without "With Every Heartbeat" and a few other songs and the 2007 international release including those songs.

A: Check wikipedia or AMG
B: Check wikipedia or AMG

In 99% of the cases the album release date is the release date for all the songs on the album. There's generally 2 exceptions: 1) a single released a month or two before the album, which happens to have occurred around december/january and 2) songs released as non-album singles and released on a later album. "Radio Free Europe" is an example of the latter, and most of the time when these cases concern well known songs it's well known as well. I'll try to keep an eye on tracks submitted that are from other years, but it's not that big a deal when I miss an obscure song since it won't finish in the top 10 anyway.

Albums:

1. R.E.M. - Murmur
2. Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones
3. The Replacements - Hootenany

5. Robert Cray - Bad Influence

However, note that singles are always listed the year they came out at RYM. So for example all singles from Thriller (except "The Girl is Mine") are listed under 1983, although they were included in last month's 1982 poll.

BTW, what was thinking when "The Girl is Mine" was picked as the first single.

OK, thanks Henrik. That means I'm gonna stick to the poll rules and, like netjade, move the Blue Nile to 1984.

1. R.E.M. - Murmur
2. New Order - Power, Corruption, & Lies
3. Frank Zappa - The Man From Utopia
4. Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
5. Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones

Numbering #1 and #2 was difficult, not because I really love either album, but they are nearly equal in quality. I give them both credit for maintaining a consistent and unique vibe throughout the whole record.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

ALBUMS
1. R.E.M., MURMUR
2. U2, WAR
3. Tom Waits, SWORDFISHTROMBONES
4. VIOLENT FEMMES
5. Meat Puppets, II
6. Talking Heads, SPEAKING IN TONGUES
7. The Police, SYNCHRONICITY
8. Cyndi Lauper, SHE’S SO UNUSUAL
9. New Order, POWER, CORRUPTION AND LIES
10. ZZ Top, ELIMINATOR

SONGS
1. U2, “Sunday Bloody Sunday”
2. Pretenders, “Middle of the Road”
2. R.E.M., “Pilgrimage”
3. Violent Femmes, “Blister in the Sun”
4. The Police, “Every Breath You Take”
5. Eurythmics, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This…)”
6. The Smiths, “Hand in Glove”
7. U2, “New Year’s Day”
8. Talking Heads, “Burning Down the House”
9. New Order, “Blue Monday”
10. Bonnie Tyler, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I'm afraid I can't do shared second places.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Cripes. That's the result of making an initial list and then realizing I'd forgotten "Middle of the Road", one of my all-time favorites. Here's the revised top ten (and yes, I know you were joking, but I feel obligated to adhere to my ten-only standard):

SONGS
1. U2, “Sunday Bloody Sunday”
2. Pretenders, “Middle of the Road”
3. R.E.M., “Pilgrimage”
4. Violent Femmes, “Blister in the Sun”
5. The Police, “Every Breath You Take”
6. Eurythmics, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This…)”
7. The Smiths, “Hand in Glove”
8. U2, “New Year’s Day”
9. Talking Heads, “Burning Down the House”
10. Bonnie Tyler, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”

Yes, I eliminated "Blue Monday". Two reasons: I figure it's going to make the overall top ten regardless of whether I include it or not; and, when you come down to it, if I had to choose which of my original bottom two I'd rather listen to right now, my heart remains loyal to my 14-year old AMERICAN TOP 40-tabulating self and the finest non-Meat Loaf recording of Jim Steinman's gloriously cheesy career. We're livin' in a powderkeg and givin' off sparks!!!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

*Applauds Harold Wexler*

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Good choice, that Bonnie Tyler song is one of my father's top 10 songs, and I quite like it too.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Good to see Violent Femmes finally showing up high on other people's lists. If it missed the top ten I'd be seriously pissed.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I'll go ahead and just do the albums now:

1. R.E.M. - Murmur (#53 and rising all the time)
2. Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones (#143)
3. Violent Femmes - s/t
4. New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
5. Madonna - s/t

Honestly, if you only want to count the top 3, that's fine with me, but I did 4 & 5 to meet the minimum. Power, Corruption & Lies has 3 songs in my top 10 for the year, but is horribly inconsistent otherwise. Same with Madge's album, except it has 3 songs in my top 30.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Quote from the AMG review of Swordfishtrombones

"when it appeared, rock critics predictably raved: after all, it sounded weird and it didn't have a chance of selling. "

nonetheless, it is still unchallenged as my 1983 number 1 (in a particularly poor year in terms of albums quality,in contrast with the high number of good singles)

Giuseppe, Mo: Radio Free Europe made it to the finale in 1981 when the single was released. If you want to replace that song with a new 20th, let me know.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Oh yeah, mistake!
I already voted for it in 1981!
20. Public Image – This Is Not A Love Song

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

1983. Probably the happiest year of my life. The last year of High School and the first of University and, in the middle, what a summer!. Sade, my band then, we’ve just obtained some recognition with our first single and we spend the summer touring and recording our next record (don’t bother to listen to it, now it simply sounds awful). Anyway it was a wonderful period of discovering, and Aztec Camera’s “Walk Out to Winter” was the perfect soundtrack. Maybe the songs on my list are not that good as I remember, but most of them are blurred by a (dummy) haze of happiness.

ALBUMS:

1. TOM WAITS “Swordfishtrombones” (#6 in my all-time list)
2. AZTEC CAMERA “High Land Hard Rain” (#35)
3. NEW ORDER “Power, Corruption and Lies” (#60)
4. U2 “War” (#75)
5. VIOLENT FEMMES “Violent Femmes” (#97)
6. GOLPES BAJOS “Golpes Bajos”
7. THE THE “Soul Mining”
8. R.E.M. “Murmur”
9. MALCOLM McLAREN “Duck Rock”

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: THE CURE “Japanese Whispers”

My favourite Spanish song of 1983: Golpes Bajos’ "No mires a los ojos de la gente"

The release of the first album of Golpes Bajos (“Low Blows” came as a shock for all the people (like me) that were devoted followers of Siniestro Total (“Totaled” or “Written Off” . Siniestro was a Galician punk band influenced by Dead Kennedys or Ramones that made irresistible funny songs with song titles as “All Hanged Die Hard-On”, “The Tits of My Girlfriend” or “My Ball Itches” (see the funny cover of the last one here parodying the “London Calling” cover with a Galician pipe instead the electric bass). The lead singer, Germán Coppini, left the band in 1983 when they were leading the independent scene to form Golpes Bajos with multi-instrument player Teo Cardalda and surprised everyone with his 180 degrees turn. Where there was simplicity now there was complexity, where there were guitars now there were keyboards and where there were jokes now there was introspection. Coppini uncovered his sensitive and tormented side delivering a brief but intense set on songs about isolation, fear, confinement, sickness and death.
The opener of the album was “No mires a los ojos de la gente” (“Don’t Look at the People’s Eyes”) and defined perfectly the ambiance. The arrangements fused the era synth-pop (with rhythm boxes and keyboards) with funk (the slap bass of Luis García and the guitars of Pablo Novoa). And the lyrics: “The song became a hymn for the introversion” (Ángel Carmona), “Coppini lyrics portrait with extreme ability feelings like the paranoia, the solitude or the terror of the misunderstood adolescents (or post-adolescents) to socialize” (Diego Onde).

NO MIRES A LOS OJOS DE LA GENTE
Composers: Teo Cardalda / Germán Coppini
Performer: GOLPES BAJOS
First release: 1983 (“Golpes Bajos” mini-album)
Length: 3’43”

No mires a los ojos de la gente,
me dan miedo,
siempre mienten.
No salgas a la calle cuando hay gente,
¿y si no vuelves?,

Quédate a mi lado,
no te marches más.

No mires a los ojos de la gente,
me dan miedo,
siempre mienten.
No salgas a la calle cuando hay gente,
¿y si no vuelves?,
¿y si te pierdes?

Escóndete en el cuarto de los huéspedes,
todo está a oscuras,
no pueden verte.
Seguro que en la calle ahora habrá gente,
alguien te busca,
alguien lo siente.
Alguien lo siente.

Quédate a mi lado,
no te marches más.

Quédate a mi lado,
no te marches más.
Quédate a mi lado,
no te marches más.

DON’T LOOK AT THE PEOPLE’S EYES

Don’t look at the people’s eyes
they scare me,
they always lie.
Don’t go out on the street when there are people.
What if you don’t come back?
What if you get lost?
What if you get lost?

Hide into the guest room,
everything’s in darkness,
no one can see you.
Surely now on the streets there will be people,
somebody’s looking for you
somebody’s noticing it.
Somebody’s noticing it.

Stay by my side,
don’t go away anymore.

Don’t look at the people’s eyes
they scare me,
they always lie.
Don’t go out on the street when there are people.
What if you don’t come back?
What if you get lost?

Hide into the guest room,
everything’s in darkness,
no one can see you.
Surely now on the streets there will be people,
somebody’s looking for you
somebody’s noticing it.
Somebody’s noticing it.

Stay by my side,
don’t go away anymore.

Stay by my side,
don’t go away anymore.
Stay by my side,
don’t go away anymore.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Minor song change

Put R.E.M.'s "Talk About the Passion" at No. 18 and move the other three songs down appropriately. Thanks.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

In terms of general album value, 1981 is even worse than 1983. There’s this cheesy sound around everything commercial, and a lot of fillers too.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Snusmumrik, we have the same first (but not in the same order)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

If you asked my dad to make a 1983 list he'd probably include "Outfidels", which he thinks is not only underrated but better than Infidels.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Nicolas,
that's cool. And actually I used to like Mellencamp's uh-huh *really* a lot. I guess I just neglected to get a copy after moving out of the place where a guy used to play it.

BillaAdama,
I wouldn't quarrel with anyone who rates the Infidels outtakes above the stuff that actually went on the album. After all, Blind Willie McTell is an Infidels outtake not released until 1991. And then there's "Foot of Pride" and two other fine songs on the Bootleg Series 1-3 box. And a killer cover of Willie Nelson's "Angel Flying too Close to the Ground", and ....

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

There are still great songs on Infidels

Like "Neighborhood Bully" or "Man Of Peace"

Great lyrics, for once very straightforward, and great guitar duo : Knolpfer and Mick Taylor.

the only weird thing is Sly & Robbie, who don't always fit with the songs.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

1984 marks a new era somehow...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I keep thinking that because it peters out toward the end that I should move She's So Unusual down a few slots, but then I think just how good and varied most of it is, and I can't do it. I also am tempted to move Punch the Clock up because I get almost giddy everytime I listen to it--but then I have to admit it is a bit of a mess, nonetheless. As for Synchronicity, I just keep wishing that lyrically there wasn't so much pretentious twaddle on it. Infidels might deserve to be higher; for some reason I'd never listened to the whole thing until quite recently, so I can't say I've fully digested it. If Dylan left "Blind Willie McTell" off because it was "never fully developed," then I suspect he should leave more of his songs not fully developed.

Albums:

1) Murmer - REM
2) War - U2
3) Meat Puppets II - Meat Puppets
4) Swordfishtrobones - Tom Waits
5) She's So Unusual - Cyndi Lauper
6) Punch the Clock - Elvis Costello
7) Speaking in Tongues - Talking Heads
8) Hootenanny - The Replacements
9) Out of Step - Minor Threat
10) Infidels - Bob Dylan
11) Field Day - Marshall Crenshaw
12) High Land, Hard Rain - Aztec Camera
13) Synchronicity - The Police
14) Texas Rain - Stevie Ray Vaughan

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Oops, that of course should be "Texas Flood" by SRV, not "Texas Rain."

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I called Texas Flood "Texas Rain," I spelled Murmur "Murmer," and I left the "m" out of Swordfishtrombones. Three strikes and I'm out.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Especially the albums had an exciting race for the top 10 with Madonna, Aztec Camera, ZZ Top and Cyndi Lauper all being in 9th or 10th place at one point, but eventually they were all overtaken by Dylan in a last-minute sprint which made him end up with a mere 1 point more than Madonna. Murmur almost made it to as much points as "Remain In Light", even though it's the first album to finish first without having any songs in the top 10. In the songs department I was especially surprised by Billy Bragg, who I'm gonna have to look into. Even though both of her songs were in or near the top 10 at one point Cyndi Lauper lost here too, unfortunately.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

I'm gutted that Madonna fell just short!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Great list. I'm glad to see the Dylan love although “Blind Willie McTell” is technically a 1991 song (in the same way that Big Star’s “Sister Lovers” is a 1978 album and not 1974).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

great to see A New England in the list. slight hope has risen in me since I noticed the increased nominations in the individual lists, but now it's ...uhm... officially certified..

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

it's not that I want to be that picky, but apart from our Huey Lewis alliance, Greg and I are still two different persons

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

oh, that applies the excel sheet, btw...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

Heh, that's strange. No idea what happened there.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1983

whatever. as I said before, no big thing... but seeing Greg sacrifice 9 points to Filth is kind of - and somewhat amusing. how many spots do I actually owe you now, Greg??
