Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Hi John

I like the idea of a motorcycle display area if it was situated somewhere nice, possible on one of the show days or perhaps all of them.

There would have to be roped off area's to stop the public fiddling with the bikes and I would be willing to take a turn at patrolling the area, perhaps on a shift system with the other bike owners.

A tent where our gear could be left would also be needed.

But I'm not into "living history", performing for the public is not my thing, and also I have other plans for most of my time at the show.

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Hi John,

Sounds really good, I'm up for that, count me in. I've collected quite a few parts now, if I can collect the last few bits I wouldn't mind saving the project and building it there. ( I'd do a dry run at home first, then paint, obviously it would just be a case of assembly at the show ).

So waffling over, yes, count me in.

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Hi John

I think this in principle is a good move - the lads at Goodwood have put on a REME workshop in previous years & makes our warhorse hobby all a bit more interesting - especially for those attending & with an interest in general with motorcycles or jeeps

Sometimes our bikes although seen, are not so visible as they are dispersed throughout - I do know there was a small gathering in years past but not so many & this was a static display without a theme

Maybe John Tinley & Peter Brown could inform us of how they achieved this Goodwood display - to help this concept on its way

I'll volunteer my ride for a strip down & workshop refurb no probs 😀😀

just going to need to allocate holiday now !!

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Well good luck with this, John! I tried for the past three years to get a display like this off the ground at W &P and have now given up as I got insufficient support. Many people say they object to "paying to display" and will not attend this show except to trawl the stalls and at least one other objects to attending a show with Axis re-enactors. Still others just won't be organised or don't see the point. I thought it was worth a try and if people are not interested, well that's OK. I live close to W and P and wil be happy to help out........hope you can make it happen....it's a good idea. The NOBS display really comes the together just for the Goodwood Revival 3 day event ( this week!) and most of the folk involved (not all) are not interested in doing the same at War and Peace. Goodwood is a different beast of course to W and P, but in principle, it would not be hard to do something very similar at War and Peace, if you can get a core of half a dozen people to support it reliably. While I was having a go at it, we were starting to get a bit of a "British [vehicles] Corner" going, but again, that had fragile support and its natural that many folk want to camp with mates and keep their vehicle close by. Herding cats comes to mind! However, it would be good to place a display as you suggest among a grouping of British vehicles. The NOBS display has always used a British WW2 truck to "anchor" it but the space (and vehicles) available at W&P allow more scope.........DR section parked next to radio truck? The vehicle displays at W and P have always lacked coherence with just a jumble of types and nationalities according to who pegs out which bit of ground or arrives first. There are broad subdivisions according to era, but even that has been a bit hit and miss. Down to organisation of course. And MV owners don't like being organised! But maybe the new broom will provide more encouragement in this regard? Again, good luck and count me in to help.

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

The truth is the vast majority like to attend events but don't want to do anything to make them happen or make any effort other than turning up...

Keep your ambitions modest, requiring the minimum number of people and you may get the support you need from the willing minority..Ian

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

The NOBS have been putting on a comprehensive display at The Goodwood Revival for the last 8 years. It takes a lot of organising mainly on the part of Peter Brown and a number of us take along quite a lot of kit to make it look like an authentic field workshop. The big difference at Goodwood is that for doing this they supply us with free entry and camping passes as well as tickets for a free breakfast and a lunch bag. W&P want us to pay for the privilege of displaying our bikes. Perhaps if they were to change their attitude there might be more people to help out. Regards, John

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Ferg, sorry I never supported your display, I did find it once a few years ago, but its about half a mile from where we camp in Kitcheners field.

So I suspect if this is going to work it will be down to location as much as anything else.

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

I hope to be putting on a stall next year (ive bought enough there over the past 19 years, so time to sell a bit of it on!). Happy to bring my M20 and put it on the display lineup. (I won the bike award 2014 but this was never advertised!)
My only comment would be one of movement. Depending where the display is set up, I expect the bikes would have to be in position early and no movement till later on.(if you were taking them back each night to camping areas).

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

I can advise a bit on location, etc at War & Peace having been there and done that, etc.. It depends on what type of display you want to put on. If it is to be firmly a static display showing, for example, REME workshop scene, then you can negotiate with the new organisers a location somewhere around the Grandstand or the reenactment area, the public hotspots, but you will likely face stiff competition. You would need lots of good stuff to dress up the set and at least three people on duty all day from Tuesday to Saturday, the new public open days. Less onerous and more flexible is if you set up a display in the WW2 vehicle area which is what I went for with the idea that people could more easily drive onto and off the display and use their bikes freely. Access on a bike in these areas is less restricted and its up to you who mans the display and when you arrive and depart ( unofficially!). Downside is that the footfall is lower, depending on weather. You would not need to pre book a place, just turn up early and peg out. Plus you can camp on the display. Altogether an easier option and the WW2 area is still reasonably close to the stalls and arena so people can take turns on the display and actually seeing the show. For any option, attendees will have to pay for camping and vehicle entry, unless you are a member of IMPS. JT and others feel this is wrong and compare it to Goodwood, but the show has always been as much for MV owners as the Public and these days it seems pretty good value for up to ten days camping with (now) good ablutions kept clean by the Gurkha team and access to a huge array of MVs plus hundreds of stalls. Anyhow, it takes a lot of money to put on and if attendees did not pay, it would not happen. Finally, I should add a caveat, that thus information is based on previous shows at Folkestone and it is possible that the new owner will make some changes. There is usually a briefing held in the New Year to advise regulars what is planned. Keep an eye on the W&P website.

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Hi All
I will be there camped with a club but if there was a bike display I would most likely be happy to put the M20 on display down there for a day or so.

email (option): martynhillyard@msn.com

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

John shouldn't have any trouble negotiating with the new show organiser for a good position Perhaps a good place would be in front of the grandstand on that lovely flat grass area which was used as a car park for post war civilian cars for the last two years?

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

I'm broadly in agreement with J.Tinley....If I was to attend W&P it's a 500 mile round trip which is undertaken at my own expense...as is the maintenance of my 'exhibit'...

As the public, stall holders, advertisers in the show guide and caterers are charged for being there I have always thought it wrong, at least under the previous regime, that vehicle exhibitors also had to pay...or at least pay so much...

Without the exhibitors there is no show, no customers for stall holders and nothing to cater for after all...

There aren't many businesses I know of...and it is a business, that can charge there customers and their suppliers...

I think exhibitors should, at worst, only be charged a nominal amount...Ian

email (option): ian@wright52.plus.com

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Ian, the MV owners are the customers and not the suppliers.......that is the point I was making. Now you either accept that or you don't, but as I said, the Show exists in its current form because of the charges imposed.

email (option): Fergusanckorn@icloud.com

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

'the MV owners are the customers and not the suppliers'...

That's not the way I see it...If I go there on my M20 I'm providing an exhibit that contributes towards making the show (and the money) for the organiser.

If he has enough people like me he can charge the public for the privilege of seeing the exhibits and the caterers for the right to feed the masses in attendance......

I get to sit in the field and look at the other exhibits as well...for a price

However, I'm one of the suppliers that provides the exhibits that make it all possible, not a customer....

Without the suppliers of MVs it would be an empty field..and a 'no show' in every sense.

What would happen if we all went as paying customers but didn't take the vehicles?....Ian

email (option): ian@wright52.plus.com

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

John perhaps not the response you were hoping for but sort of inevitable with all discussions about the War & Peace show.

Now what about them Nazis everyone

email (option): robmiller11(a)yahoo.co.uk

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Rob, When I along with my M20 where in Normandy 2014 there was a obvious absence of uniformed Nazis, either driving walking or generally strutting about the place,
I wonder why?
Perhaps those who dress up as Germans might learn something from the French and not forget why so many of our machines needed to be produced along with every other piece of equipment we now still have preserve/restore and use,
As a Ex Service man I certainly have no desire to dress in a German uniform. Or sit atop a Panzer.
Just my personal thoughts, brief rant over.

Jim (Per Mare Per Terram)

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

John , if you need a Bedford QL to dress up the WD bike seen I am in and we can bring are bikes also.

Guy

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Answering Ian's point....."What would happen if we all went as paying customers but didn't take the vehicles?". Well of course there would be no show, but my point is that there would be no show if MVs and owners attended and did not pay.......or at least not a show of the size and quality of War and Peace. This discussion is relevant to the proposal to have a decent DR display because it signifies the lack of support that tends to be shown for doing anything at the Show, which I think is a great pity both for bike owners and attracting more people into the addiction! You can't force people to pay up and come or change their views on Axis reenactors or to make a bit of effort for a display if they do attend and that's the point where I gave up the effort! The Goodwood event is completely different......the NOBS come solely to provide the display , without which they could not attend "gratis" (not counting the sterling effort put in to keep it going). These things need to be borne in mind and probably underpin the advice given above......keep it simple!

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Ferg and others,Im part of the desert rats living history team, we won first place at combined opps last year and first place at the odyssey this year, we /I know how much effort it takes to put on a very good display, and as a founder imps member have been involved with many award wining vehicles and displays over the years, to be frank WandP is not what it was, and we as a group didn't attempt to put on a decent display this year, due mostly to a shortage of man power, holidays etc., I'm am perfectly happy to supply a few bikes as live nr Canterbury, so keep in touch, andrew

email (option): warbikesat geemale dot cmm,( think about this)

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Andrew very kindly supported my first effort to get a display at War &Peace in 2013 with his M20 and huge stack of tyres! His comments flag up a problem in that the Show runs over 5 days which needs manpower resources. Odyssey and Combined Ops are weekends so easier to manage for those with day jobs. So you need to be realistic and practical or it will be hard to get sustained support. That's why I was quite keen in joining forces with a couple of four wheel MV groups and having a combined display so resources and time could be pooled. I think this is quite possible and could allow a DR display to be part of a larger group that maybe captures a campaign (eg Normandy) and/or a function (eg Signals). There are a couple of groups local to the Showground (always helps) that could be approached, for example. Just ideas and thoughts to kick around. Hope this helps.

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Hi All
Some very interesting comments one or two did make me smile

As a keen motorcyclist,,,,,, the DR motor cycle section at W&P 2016 I think is a must ,,,,,,, the show offers a wonderful selection of military vehicles yet very little in regards to DR Bikes

Interestingly ive been asked if this could be an addition to another display WHY not ?

It looks as if this thread is developing into the ones that wish to attend W&P and participate in developing a DR Bike section

Lets keep lines of comms open chaps all every interesting

Re: War & Peace motor cycle DR display 2016

Hi guys,
Sorry, I've not read everything here, I just skipped past a lot down to the bottom where I could add a few words...

I run a WW2 RAF Living History Group here in Scotland.
We spend a few weekends during the summer months displaying within the Scottish boundaries, however, we have discussed betwen ourselves, about the possibility of going further afield.
The thing that stops us moving far is the cost of fuel - Scotland to South East England and back will not be cheap.
If event organisers want us to attend their show, we are happy to discuss with them... We are totally self sufficient, we even have our own generators, fire fighting equipment, safety certificates and PLI etc...
Anyone remotely interested is welcome to browse our website at www.638squadron.org to get a better idea of what we have available... Oh, you will also see at least TWO BSA WM20's in there ;-)

Best wishes
Ian
