"Hung Up" received much acclaim-it was No. 26 on Pitchfork's year-end list, but I guess it will depend if they poll newer critics, whatnot. Surprised "Music" wasn't on the 2000 year-end listing.
COADF would be on mine, but I don't enjoy American Life quite as much. Neither Music or COADF Placed on Pitchfork's year-end lists, so, yeah, I guess they won't appear.
Anyway most of the top 100 songs will be songs already in the Pitchfork 500 or the addendum for songs of 2007, especially with 2008 quite a weak single year (with Blind and Ready for the Floor probably quite high however).
The few songs released before which will make the top 100 without being in the top 100 will be songs cut because of the rule "only one song by album" (for instance it is pretty sure that Ms Jackson and B.O.B. will both be high will only one was on the Pitchfork 100 )
Anyway, what is sure is that their communication plan is very efficient since all of us music geek have been buzzing about their list for one week.
I hate it how lupe fiasco never gets the attention that he deserves from all of these lists.
It's surprisingly hard to get back into the loop with this forum, when going away on holiday, and being without internet access!
I'd be interested to see where Turn on the Bright Lights turns up in the list. It came top in the year, v. high in the halfdecade list, and is without a doubt one of my favourite albums from this decade. Yet I get theimpression firstly that it was criminally underrated when it first came out (mainly by other publications), but has also slightly lost favour with pitchfork. I have no doubt Kid A will come up trumps - the only possible album to challenge it being Person Pitch. Funeral should challenge it, but I get the impression PF won't rate it as highly as they should.
I also completely agree with Stevo- Lupe Fiasco does not get the recognition he deserves - he is probably my favourite hip-hop act, after outkast and cannibal ox of the decade.
It will be:
1. MPP
2. Sung Tongs
3. Feels
4. Strawberry Jam
5. Here Comes The Indian
6. Campfire Songs
7. Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished
8. Danse Manatee
9. Oh no, we ran out of Animal Collective albums! :(
10. Oh no, we ran out of Animal Collective albums! :(
GOD, I hate that band.
And I hate Pitchfork! Is it possible to be any more pretentious?
Songs 201-500 are up now!
http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/7685-the-top-500-tracks-of-the-2000s-500-201/
Two of my favorites from this decade, "Daniel" by Bat For Lashes and "Danger! High Voltage" by Electric Six, were in this section; I'd thought they'd rank a little higher. (oh well, it is only 1 list after all)
Also, glad to see "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre get some love. Hey Hey, Hey Hey...
Some songs I'm glad to see (would be in my top 200 of the decade)
The Dodos - Fools (which I expected higher but well, great song anyway)
Sufjan Stevens - For The Widows in Paradise (one of Sufjan finest song, a bit overshadowed by songs from Illinoise)
DFA 1979 - Romantic Rights (one of the best riffs of the decade)
Soulwax - NY Excuse
The Roots - Seed 2.0
Vampire Weekend - Walcott (best track of the album for me)
Midlake - Roscoe (the album has been quite a deception but that song is incredibly beautiful)
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
CSS - Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Another Morning Stoner (since it was in the Pitchfork 500, I hope it would make the top 200... one of the best non QOTSA heavy song of the decade)
The Books - Take Time (another Pitchfork 500 out ! )
At the Drive-In - One Armed Scissor (not the best song of Relationship of Command but the most acclaimed one for an unknown reason)
The Thermals - A Pillar of Salt (probably the best surprise so far, it is here ranked 250 but for me it is top 50 of the decade, it is epic, intense but very funny and danceable too with this high-speed riff and those very powerful lyrics)
I thought Sleeping Giant will reach the top 200 since it is in the Pitchfork 500 but it is not even on the top 400... quite a surprise for me ! Surprised to by the low rank of The Moon by the Microphones.
Happy to see:
N.E.R.D.- "Run to the Sun"
Björk- "New World"
Death from Above 1979- "Romantic Rights"
Gwen Stefani- "What You Waiting For" (easily her best song)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs- "Cheated Hearts"
Missy Elliott- "Pass That Dutch"
PJ Harvey- "Good Fortune"
Rachel Stevens- "Some Girls"
Girls Aloud- "Biology"
Björk- "Pagan Poetry" (would make my top 10)
Kylie Minogue- "Love At First Sight"
Bat for Lashes- "Daniel" (I agree it should be higher than 206)
Horrified to see:
Lumidee- "I'll Never Leave You": It's hard to come across a more out of tune voice.
Destiny's Child- "Jumpin' Jumpin'" (pure trash)
And JR, "Don't Tell Me" lands at number 434!
Good to see:
Weezer - Island in the Sun
Decemberists - The Engine Driver
Coldplay - Yellow (expected a shutout of their stuff)
Cut Copy - Out There on the Ice
I was surprised to see "While You Wait For the Others" by Grizzly Bear so low. I mean didn't they give it a 10?
I don't recognize this music. I'm out of time!
I always like these singles lists the best because it reveals more music to me that I haven't heard. I had never heard the Emily Haines, Mum or Jesu songs and listening to the rest of the albums or EP's on rateyourmusic gave me a few new albums to listen to because they sound great.
takes too long to load on my system- thanks for posting some of the inclusions.
And thanks for the Madge report, Moonbeam. :) I guess "Hung Up" could crack the top 200.
200-101
191. Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma
190. Panjabi MC - Mundian to Bach Ke (is Jay-Z even in this song?)

177. Eminem - The Real Slim Shady

157. Kanye West - Touch the Sky

150. Junior Senior - Move Your Feet (maybe they just don't like songs from earlier in the decade as much)
143. Feist - 1234
142. Flaming Lips - Do You Realize???
141. Britney Spears - Toxic (she can't sing, but good music)

Songs I expected higher (all top 100 for me) :

Vitalic - la Rock 02 (may be the best electro song of the decade)
Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day
Justice - We Are Your Friends
Kanye West - Jesus Walks
Animal Collective - Leaf House (well, there will probably be Fireworks and My Girls on the top 100, which I really like too, but Leaf House and Purple Bottle are top 100 too for me... while Grass, which might be on their list, is not)
Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up Look Sharp (but I Luv U is still running ! )
Very good surprise (top 100 for me but which I didn't expect to see)
Dirty Projectors - Stillness is the Move (one of the top 3 songs of 2009, strange mix of guitars, hip-hop and oriental groove, awesome !)
The Pipettes - Pull Shapes (almost as irresistible as Rosey)
WTF :
Jimmy Eat World - The Middle : seriously ???? it is not even fun in Guitar Hero !
And I'm also glad to see Mushaboom topping 1234
Great list so far.
Second part (200-101)
Many pleasant surprises here too
Our Way to Fall, The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack, Pull Shapes, You Are the Generation That Bought More Shoes and You Get What You Deserve(#121!!!!) and Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken to name a few.
Expected to be in top 100 Leafhouse (!!??) & Stillness is the Move (the song of the year?). Peach Plum Pear is also my favourite Joanna Newsom song but there might be still left Cosmia, Colleen or Emily (or not).
Only one Radiohead (& Animal Collective) song so far. I expected more.
YAY!
#447: Mylo - "In My Arms" (vastly better than "Drop the Pressure")
#341: Fleet Foxes - "Blue Ridge Mountains" (second best off the album after "Quiet Houses")
#303: Mystikal - "Shake Ya Ass" (hate me for it, but I love it)
#239: The Dismemberment Plan - "The Face of the Earth" (YES!)
#185: Dead Prez - "Hip Hop" (love to see these guys getting some props)
#169: Ludacris - "Southern Hospitality" (I forgot that this was from the '00s)
#157: Kanye West - "Touch the Sky" (really underrated cut)
#122: Cam'ron - "Hey Ma" (why was "Oh Boy" the bigger single?)
#118: Camera Obscura - "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken"
#105: Grinderman - "No Pussy Blues" (one of the funniest songs in a LONG time)
BOO!
#495: Weezer - "Island in the Sun" (so incredibly blah)
#351: Rich Boy - "Throw Some D's" (I swear, the only words are "throw some d's on that bitch")
#276: The Darkness - "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" (never liked it)
#219: Lil Mama - "Lip Gloss"
#180: Gwen Stefani - "Hollaback Girl" (what can be said about this that hasn't already been said?)
#175: Usher et al. - "Yeah!"
#131: Destiny's Child - "Say My Name"
Not sure which side of the fence I'm falling on with Andrew W.K. or Kelis...
Happy to see:
Morrissey- "First of the Gang to Die"
Xiu Xiu- "I Love the Valley OH!"
Ladytron- "Destroy Everything You Touch"- so powerful!
The Strokes- "The Modern Age"
!!!- "Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard": Expected this to be a bit higher, but it's just awesome.
Aaliyah- "We Need a Resolution": I'm hoping "Try Again" cracks the top 100.
Appalled to see:
Twista- "Slow Jamz": How this gets acclaim is beyond me!
Beyonce- "Irreplaceable"
Usher- "Yeah": No.
50 Cent- "In da Club": Hip hop's worst artist
Destiny's Child- "Say My Name"
So far, I think this list is really good. 2 more songs for Grizzly Bear in this section probably means none in the T100, unless they put something like Cheerleader up there but I think that's unlikely. They put down a second Strokes song, so I think Last Nite will crack T100. Dead Leaves and Dirty Ground (one of my favorites) is the first Stripes song, meaning that Seven Nation Army and Fell In Love With A Girl definately made the list. Although 7NA will likely finish a lot lower than Fell in Love.
Animal Collective puts up their first song with Leaf House. I suspect they still have another 2-3 songs in the T100 and that My Girls may T10. Radiohead and OutKast didn't get a song in this update leaving both artists with 1. Nonetheless, it would be unthinkable to have a T100 without Pyramid Song, There There, Ms. Jackson, Hey Ya, and BOB, the latter two will likely T10. Also, there have been 0 LCD Soundsystem songs so far. I wouldn't be shocked if as many as 5 were included in the T100. Here's my hypothetical T10
1. All My Friends
2. B.O.B
3. Hey Ya
4. Blind
5. Losing My Edge
6. Heartbeat
7. My Girls
8. Fell In Love with a Girl
9. Battles
10. Maps
Songs are harder to predict than albums, but I think this one is pretty solid.
I wish you could scan a song with Lala.
All My Friends is a modern classic. It topped the singles list for 2007, a very competitive year, and from what I can tell concensus opinion has only grown more favorable.
well, i was thinking along the lines of people's favourites, not significance. It seems like Pitchfork aren't thinking significance as much as they usually do, this time round. I think one reason many of the entries to last year's PF 500 have got relatively low placements now, is that the purpose of the decades list is somewhat different.
Anyone wants to take a go at placing All My Friends genre-wise, cause dance-punk it ain't
Dance-Prog?
do you think "Hung Up" will get slighted for this list? Look at Britney Spears' "Toxic" (one of just two singles of hers that receives acclaim, none of her albums do). It was no. 3 on Pitchfork's year-end list and #13 on the half-decade list.
You never know how things will turn out with decade lists, though.
And what is wrong with "Irreplaceable"? It's one of my favorite mainstream tracks from the last several years.
JR, I think "Hung Up" will make the top 100. It certainly deserves a nod. "Toxic" did go very far down the list, which makes me worry about the placements of "Can't Get You Out of My Head", "Hung Up" and "My Heartbeat". We shall see!
As for Beyonce, I think she is Satan incarnate. That doesn't mean I haven't used her to teach my students before! They know the Standard Normal table as Beyonce, because students tend not to look at the key and by making a fool out of myself singing "to the left, to the left, every single time the Standard Normal's to the left- don't you ever for a second get to thinkin' it's to the right", it helps them remember.
As for "All My Friends", I'm pulling for it to take the crown. It is my 2nd or 3rd favorite song of the decade (after Annie's "My Heartbeat" and perhaps Kylie's "Can't Get You Out of My Head"), and it easily places among my top 30 songs ever.
Haha harsh on Sasha, ain't ya? hehe She's ubiquitous, but I like some of her songs. asn't too big on "Single Ladies"- overall, I like the restained, softer Beyonce music, I guess. Though "Crazy in Love" is a great single, and I liked "Deja Vu."
Did Pitchfork not publish year-end lists in 2000/2001? Can't find that it did on this site. Did it start in 2003, even though it claims to have been around for the whole of this decade's music?
it did list for albums but not singles 2000-2002. all lists are on the left towards the bottom of the main page
51. Jay Z - Takeover
52. Kanye West feat Dwele - Flashing Lights
53. The Strokes - Someday

59. Radiohead - Pyramid Song
60. Ghostface Killah - Nutmeg

63. The Hold Steady - Stuck Between Stations

99. MGMT - Time to Pretend (I was thinking top 25)
100. Jamey Lidell - Multiply
Thrilled to see "Try Again" at 75. It totally deserves it! I'm a little surprised to see "Ms. Jackson", "Wolf Like Me" and "Fell in Love with a Girl" so soon, but if it means that "Can't Get You Out of My Head" and "My Heartbeat" are in the top 50, I'm all for it.
I'm surprised that no LCD Soundsystem songs have made it. It seems unlikely that they'll get more than 2 in the top 50. Can "Someone Great" sneak in? Or "Yeah"?
Glad to see Wilco getting decent singles praise (3 on the list thus far.)
Generally, they're all album praise and no single praise. "Jesus, Etc" and "Poor Places" are monsters though.
Ghostface Killah at 60? Cherchez LaGhost is a better song, but neither are top 100 worthy.
98. Beirut - Postcards from Italy
is maybe the best surprise of this part. It's the only reason I still listen to Gulag Orkester occasionally (and right now).
It's also maybe only (pleasant) surprise in this part (well if Robyn has two songs in top 100 it's surprise as well)
Several my favourites are just were I expected them to be (the songs Nassim mentioned (Try Again is maybe best R&B song of the decade) + In the Morning(!!), Such Great Hights etc.)
I'm very surprised and disappointed that there are every bad song from Bracketology which I thought would have vanished after decade lists (Usher, The Game, Futureheads, Madonna (I can't stand Don't Tell Me) etc. There are so many mainstream songs in the list that it makes me wonder have Pitchfork changed their staff.
"Don't Tell Me" is one of her best tracks, period- is there anything you like from this Madge decade? :)
Moonbeam, I'm starting to think Pitchfork passed on "Hung Up" for this year-end tally- top 50 would be too high based on its year-end placement, but, one never knows. Are there any examples thus far of songs that didn't place all that highly on year-end lists, that have done so on this list?
"Lip Gloss" (a WTF selection to me) ranked 27th on the year-end list, and 219 on this decade list; Robyn's "Be Mine" ranked 21st on the year-end list, and 82nd on the decade list. Then you had Britney Spears' "Toxic" ranking 3rd on the year-end list, but "only" 141 on the decade list.
So, again, who knows.
50-21 is up

Happy to see:
Robyn- "With Every Heartbeat"
Franz Ferdinand- "Take Me Out": This being at number 44 is quite a surprise though- I feel it should have been in the top 20, and it seems that Franz will indeed slide down the AM lists
Modest Mouse- "Float On"
Kylie- "Can't Get You Out of My Head": Number 37 is a pretty decent showing, even if it would be in my top 3
Clipse- "Grindin'": One of the best hip hop tracks of the decade for sure. I'm bummed that Busta Rhymes will strike out, though.
LCD Soundsystem- "Someone Great":Wow! Didn't expect it at number 22, but I'm happy! "All My Friends" seems like a lock for the top 10, now.
Horrified:
Justin Timberlake- "My Love": Timbertwat ruins a nice Timbaland production.
Kelly Clarkson- "Since U Been Gone": Idol twaddle.
A few downers for me:
The list is likely not to include Duffy's "Mercy" or Janelle Monae's "Many Moons", both of which deserve to crack the top 500 at the very least.
I don't think I've seen Daft Punk's "One More Time" yet, so it could be in top 20 since it's in the Pitchfork 500 book (at least I think it is).
"Someone Great" is actually my favorite LCD Soundsystem song, so I'm happy to see it there. I'm actually surprised that there's been nothing from "Funeral" on the list yet (either that or I didn't look very hard).
"Rebellion (Lies)" was in the 60s.
there will be no "Hung Up" on this list. You'd think it would have been somewhere in thetop 500, being it did place #26 on the 2005 year-end list. Ah, well.
"Can't Get You Out of My Head" appearing was very expected.
I'm hoping for John Wayne Gacy, Jr.

Röyksopp with Robyn - The Girl And The Robot is the best song on which Robyn sings imo. Released this year. Top 20?
They were big on Konichiwa so I wouldn't be surprised to see that.
I went through the Pitchfork 500 quickly and here are the songs from this decade that were not in the 500-21
Daft Punk – One More Time
Radiohead – Idioteque
Outkast – B.O.B.
Missy Elliott – Get Ur Freak On
Osymyso – Intro-Inspection
The Knife – Heartbeats
LCD Soundystem – Lossing My Edge
The Rapture – House of Jealous Lovers
My Morning Jacket – The Way That He Sings
Lightning Bolt – Ride the Sky
The Decemberists – Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect
Radiohead – Life in a Glasshouse
Deerhoof – This Magnificent Bird Will Rise
Outkast – Hey Ya
Kanye West – Through The Wire
R. Kelly – Ignition (Remix)
Beyonce – Crazy In Love

And the top songs from the 2000-2004 singles list that are not included
1. Outkast- B.O.B.
2. Outkast- Hey Ya!
3. LCD Soundsystem – Losing my Edge
4. Missy Elliott – Get Ur Freak On
6. Annie – Heartbeat
7. Beyonce – Crazy in Love
9. The Rapture – House of Jealous Lovers
10. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps
12. R. Kelly – Ignition (remix)
From 2005-2008 singles/ songs lists the only top 5 singles that are not included yet are
2007
1. LCD Soundsystem – All my Friends
4. M.I.A. - Paper Planes (remix)
2008
01: Hercules and Love Affair- Blind
05: M83- Kim & Jessie
"Kim & Jessie" is already on the list, isn't it? It's #256.
My prediction, jus for fun:
1. OutKast - B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)
2. LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
3. M.I.A. - Paper Planes
4. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
5. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind
6. Missy Elliott - Get Ur Freak On
7. Beyonce - Crazy in Love
8. Annie - Heartbeat
9. Radiohead - Idioteque
10. LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
11. Johnny Cash - Hurt
12. Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)

16. Animal Collective - My Girls
17. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
18. Eminem feat. Dido - Stan
19. R. Kelly - Ignition (Remix)
20. The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers
"Hurt" may well not make it, this is purely a gut instinct. Same deal with "Stan", though it not making it while "Without Me" makes it is just, well, odd.
If I'm right, the most shocking omissions would be:
The Walkmen - The Rat (Still think this might come in #20 and knock out The Rapture)
Joanna Newsom - Emily (2 from Milk-Eyed and 0 from Ys? Shocking)
Jay-Z - 99 Problems (with 3 songs in the Top 100, I guess that would be considered enough)
LCD Soundsystem - Yeah! (again, 3 in the Top 100)
Wilco - I Am Trying to Break Your Heart (only 2 from YHF, I'm thinking. I think they got the right 2, though this is often name-checked)
The Strokes – Last Nite and Hard to Explain (I think Is This It only lands 2 on, though either of these appearing would not surprise me)
Amy Winehouse - Rehab (don't think she's a P-fork favorite)
Daft Punk - One More Time (eclipsed by the far superior Digital Love)
1. LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
2. OutKast - B.O.B
3. OutKast - Hey Ya!
4. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
5. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind
6. M.I.A - Paper Planes
7. Beyonce - Crazy in Love
8. Annie - Heartbeat
9. LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
10. Missy Elliot - Get Ur Freak On
11. Animal Collective - My Girls
12. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
13. Radiohead - Idioteque
14. Jay Z - 99 Problems
15. MGMT - Kids
16. The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers
17. Eminem - Stan
18. LCD Soundsystem - Yeah!
19. R. Kelley - Ignition (Remix)
20. Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1
This is my final prediction, with just under 2 hours untill unveiling. I'm going to call that LCDSS and Jigga do indeed put 4 songs into the T100. Pitchfork clearly loves both artists. Also, sonofsamiam, I think calling Hey Ya for anything other than T10 is a losing proposition.
The Strokes will NOT make the top 20. Pitchfork already said that Someday was the highest ranking Strokes song.
I was disappointed to see Bro's so low. I really thought that would be in the top 10.
I still stand my pick of All My Friends for number one, though.
I'd be thrilled if Annie's "Heartbeat" landed at number 8, as both of you predict. I'm happy enough that it's in the top 20, but a top 10 place would be excellent.
1. OutKast -B.O.B.
2. LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
3. M.I.A. [ft. Bun B and Rich Boy] - Paper Planes (Diplo Remix)
4. Beyoncé [ft. Jay-Z] - Crazy in Love
5. Daft Punk - One More Time
6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
7.Missy Elliott - Get Ur Freak On
8. Radiohead - Idioteque
9. Animal Collective - My Girls
10. Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
11. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
12. OutKast - Hey Ya!
13. LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
14. Jay-Z - 99 Problems
15. The Knife - Heartbeats
16. The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers
17. Annie - Heartbeat
18. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind
19. R. Kelly - Ignition (Remix)
20. The Walkmen - The Rat
edit
Other than the semi-high placement of Beyonce and low placement of Hey Ya! it is not that suprising.
So my friend and I had a bet, me on All My Friends, him on Hey Ya. Got there! As said other than Beyonce's high placing and Hey Ya not making T10, the list isn't shocking, and I feel as though the T3 is excellent.
When I saw Neighborhood #1 at 10, I jumped out of my seat and announced "All hail Funeral! Greatest record of the 00s!". Then when I scrolled down to 8th pitchfork sent me back to reality. How lame would it be if they ddi B.O.B/Kid A again? Although I do have to say, BOB is a worthy champion. Anyway, after seeing the results of this list, NEW PREDICTION
1. Radiohead - Kid A
2. Arcade Fire - Funeral
3. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
4. Jay Z - The Blueprint
5. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
6. The Knife - Silet Shout
7. OutKast - Stankonia
8. Panda Bear - Person Pitch
9. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
10. Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
Does anyone else think Idioteque is too high? It's a solid song, but I'm not sure that I would put it in my top 10 for the year let alone the decade.
i just realized "Stan" wasn't on the list.... and this makes me sad.
also, i agree with ^^^ i love idiotesque, definitely up there, maybe even top 20... but i like the national anthem better
I am disappointed in a number of songs that didn't make the list or where I felt the placement was too low. With those that didn't make the list, some I felt were excluded because they didn't wan to put too many songs by the same artist on the list - which I think partly misses the point, because aren't they after all evaluating simply the best songs of the decade, period, regardless of politics? Some just didn't make the list because it's pitchfork, so no matter how much I think some U2 or "Viva La Vida" or something unhip should at least be in the top FIVE HUNDRED songs of the decade, I understand the source and had a feeling they wouldn't be there at all.
But....
That being said, I feel like the the top 10 is pretty solid. Even the ranking was well done (I didn't think the ranking was well done everywhere, that's for sure..."Two Weeks" was too low, for one)....the one thing I maybe would have changed - "Crazy In Love" should be switched with "Hey Ya" as the decade's best pop single, or maybe Gnarls Barkley "Crazy" (I could live with either of those replacing "Get Your Freak On" too but I understand the power that song has over critics....) Besides that though, solid top 10. Glad to see "Neighborhoods #1."
My two cents...
#19. "Ignition (Remix)"
Remember when R. Kelly was facing all those child molestation charges, and he responds by coming out with an album called "Chocolate Factory" and the big single off that is this one? Balls, man. Big brass ones. I don't know why I love this song as much as I do, but I'm very happy to see it as high as it is.
#16. "House of Jealous Lovers"
The critics seem to love this song, and my feelings toward it ebb and flow. Literally two days ago, I was cranking it up and singing along in my car. Today I can't stand to think I was doing that. At 16, it's too high, but it's not TOO high.
#12. "Hey Ya!"
At 12, it's WAY too low. This should definitely be top ten, maybe even top five.
#11. "Crazy"
See my comments for "Hey Ya!"
#10. "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)"
I'm convinced that "Rebellion (Lies)" is the better track, but I'm not going to complain with a track from Funeral getting to the #10 spot. Besides, even though it's not my favorite track off the album, it still kicks ass.
#8. "Idioteque"
GOD DAMN IT! I just cannot understand why this fucking song gets so much love. Or even why Kid A gets so much love. I've listened to that album so many times, and there is nothing worth listening to after "Optimistic." Pitchfork even falls all over itself calling the album "miraculous." Jesus Christ, get off your knees and take Radiohead's... (the rest of this comment contains offensive language, incitements to violence, and rubber novelty poop and has therefore been deleted)
#4. "Crazy in Love"
Pretty good pop song, granted. But the fourth best of the decade? This just confirms my belief that this has been a REALLY weak decade.
#3. "Paper Planes (Diplo Remix)"
For my own sake, can I just say that it's the album version of this song and not some remix? If so, then I'll agree with it. Brilliant track.
#1. "B.O.B."
I remember when "Ms. Jackson" was blowing up the airwaves thinking, "Yeah, it's good, but why the hell isn't 'B.O.B.' getting this kind of love?" I'm a little surprised to see it at #1, but I'm certainly not disappointed.
Strange, I can't see the results yet on my computer. I've tried deleting cookies, and still nothing!
I was hoping Annie could crack the top 10, but what the heck. I'm happy that "Maps" did, and "All My Friends" at number 2 is certainly a lofty position!
I simply cannot fathom the love for Beyonce or R. Kelly, though. I hated those songs the first time I heard them, and I hate them just as much now. In fact, "Crazy in Love" pollutes my bottom 100 songs list.
So, I was wrong about:
"Hurt" -- I find it strange "The Man Comes Around" made it and this didn't. Maybe it'll top the videos list to make up for it?
"Stan" -- How "The Real Slim Shady" and "Without Me" made it and this did not is baffling. Dated self-mythology trumps storytelling and honest emotion, I suppose.
"Kids" -- just shocked about this, guess they're just not MGMT fans. (Neither am I, so I'm not that sad about it.)
Glad "99 Problems" made it so high. "One More Time" at #5 is shocking, though I do love Daft Punk. That high is still a surprise though. I don't think I get the amount of acclaim "The Rat" gets -- good song, but #20 of the decade?
And I go for "The National Anthem" over "Idioteque" any day of the week, but that's just a taste thing.
Still, gonna give myself slight props for picking the Top 3.
Calling the top 3 was really sick. The only prediction I saw that was better was one on metacritic where they got 19 songs, missing only Neighborhood #1 for Emily.
Biggest surprise for me was loading the page and seeing Walkmen at 20th instead of Stan. In hindsight, Kids was a bad call. Pitchfork has expressed their dislike for MGMT in the past.
Maybe the fork is with me on Eminem. I think his serious stuff is only acclaimed because it's him... nobody thought he had it in him even if it isn't all that great. His forte is being obnoxious, having fun and creating club anthems... and they're pretty good songs.
It's hard for me to think of Stan as a 'serious' song. I take it as "I'm SO awesome that this guy murder-suicides his girlfriend just cause I snubbed him!" Not only that, he gets to be the good guy in the song by actually writing back at the end. Stan is quite possibly the most narcissistic song I've ever heard, and one of the most blatant examples of marketing by shock value. Not only that he gets associative credit for throwing in a verse from a one hit wonder's one hit.
Maybe I should just save the rant for bracketology.
I would probably put Idioteque decently high on my own list, but I'd put Everything In It's Right Place higher. I think Idioteque gets a little bit overrated because it was the first song a lot of people heard on it, and thus the one that caused people to either get on or off the experimental Radiohead bandwagon.
It's definitely way too early to judge the 00's as a strong or weak decade. The music hasn't had nearly enough time to sit with us yet. I'd probably put it above the 90's overall. The 00's might be the worst mainstream decade, but way too much of the big 90's indie stuff is just buzzy mumbling lo-fi.
No Machine Gun?
Dark horse for best album from the 'Fork: Silent Shout. They drool all over it whenever they get the chance, and I think they'll go a little outside the box with albums after going (basically) chalk with B.O.B. and All My Friends.
I maybe alone in this but I think Funeral has a ton of filler compared to some of the better albums of this decade. It has some of the greatest songs of the decade, but beyond the top 4 or so, it kind of pales in comparison to a few other albums. Just my opinion.
As for the pitchfork top 10 albums:
01. Radiohead- Kid A
02. Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavillion
03. Jay-Z- The Blueprint
04. Interpol- Turn on the Bright Lights
05. LCD Soundsystem- Sound of Silver
06. OutKast- StanKonia
07. Sigur Ros- Agaetis Byrjun
08. Sufjan Stevens- Illinios
09. The Knife- The Silent Shout
10. Fleet Foxes- Fleet Foxes
Even if you dont think as highly of funeral as others, you cant deny the fact that it will be in the top 10, if not top 5, if not #1. Funeral was a huge album not just for Arcade Fire, but for Pitchfork as well Pitchfork started showing there muscle as a music pusher when funeral was released. Im sure they played an important part in funerals success. Pitchfork is one of the few music sites that actually have some weight, a good pitchfork review oftens means alot of extra money in sales. They wont deny their love for it when the time comes.
1)Radiohead - Kid A
2)Arcade Fire - Funeral
3)Panda Bear - Person Pitch
4)TV on The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain
5)LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
6)Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
7)Sufjan Stevens - Illinios
8)Radiohead - Amnesiac
9)Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
10)Outkast - Stankonia
I really havent the slightest clue. But I'm sure my top 3 picks will reign high on pitchforks list.
I don't think it's a BAD album. It's probably in my top 20 of the decade, just not my top 20 of all time like some people.
Pitchfork ranked it #45 on it's top albums of the first half of the 00s. That leads me to believe it'll be more in the 70-75 range.
It'll definitely make a lot of top 10 lists, but I don't think Pitchfork's will be one of them.
Funeral was what, 3 months old when that first list came out? They've gone back and declared it a masterpiece many times over. The album will T5. I actually think that pitchfork is going to spice things up a bit with albums. They're big on sensationalism, and what would be more sensational than Kid A, "the last great album", being dethroned from its roost? Following the pitchformula I think we might be working with something like
1. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
2. Arcade Fire - Funeral
3. Radiohead - Kid A
Of course the spots are volatile, but I have a feeling SOS is getting it's due.
SR
There were many albums from 2004 that were ranked higher than Funeral on the top of 00-04. Among them
Animal Collective- Sung Tongs
Madvillain- Madvillainy
Dvendra Banhardt- Rejoicing in the Hands
Fiery Furnaces- Blueberry Boat
Pitchfork is probably going to want to buck many mainstream indie stereotypes. Going down the top 5 from acclaimedmusic's 00s list...
01. The Strokes- Is This It- Will probably be about 25-30. They've always liked this guardedly.
02. The White Stripes- Elephant- Won't be listed. They've never liked this album.
03. Franz Ferdinand- S/T- Probably about 130-140. Pitchfork has always been very modest about this album.
04. Arcade Fire- Funeral- 40 at the highest, 80 at the lowest. I don't expect this to tear up the list.
05. Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot- In the top 20, but no higher than 10.
so the 1,2,3,4, and 5, will probably be 25, not listed, 100-something, 50-60, and 15-20. That's the way Pitchfork does things.
Check the dates. The 04 eoy list (wich funeral topped) came after the 00-04 list. It served as the correction.
I agree about Is This It and YHF though. They'll get props, but neither can probably T10.
Edit: If they weren't big fans of Funeral, than I highly doubt Neibhrohood #1 (Tunnels) would have made T10 of their songs list.
Funeral was by far the youngest album on the 00-04 lists. In fact many publications hadnt heard the album until the following year. PItchfork employees had barely digested funeral when they made that list. Its inclusion on the list, to me, speaks very highly of its merit. They new it was special and they forced it into a list that perhaps they shouldnt have made so early.
Pitchfork should have waited longer for this eod list. Albums like Embryonic could be amazing and deserve high praise.
