Pitchfork announced they will be doing the top 500 songs of the decade and the top 200 albums starting next week and ending October 2. Check it out:
http://pitchfork.com/news/36153-presenting-p2k-the-decade-in-music/
What will be #1?
I guarantee that their top 5 will have Kid A in it no matter what.
As for singles, I predict a strong presence of Outkast and LCD Soundsystem.
Just my predictions.
Weird. Why don't they wait until the end of the actual decade?
I think it's reasonable to put the list out early, but they should at least wait until December when they can be fairly certain no more candidates will be released. I mean, I highly doubt all my favorite 20 albums of this year have already come out.
Calling Pitchformula's top ten:
1. In Rainbows
2. Ys
3. Fleet Foxes
4. Silent Shout
5. Sung Tongs
6. Kid A
7. The Glow, Pt 2
8. Person Pitch
9. Turn On The Bright Lights
10. Funeral
Calling their biggest omissions:
Elephant, White Blood Cells (When they rank De Stijl at #65 or something they will go out of their way to crap on everything else the Stripes did)
Smile
All Bob Dylan
I wouldn't be shocked if they stuck Merriweather Post Pavilion at #1 just to be the first ones to throw superlatives in it, but being Pitchformula I think they'd feel better about putting Sung Tungs higher.
Contrarily, here's Rolling Stone's probable top ten of the decade list:
1. Rolling Stones - A Bigger Bang
2. Eminem - Marshall Matters MP
3. U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind
4. Outkast - Speakerboxx/The Love Below
5. Weezer - The Red Album
6. Neil Young - Prarie Wind
7. Bob Dylan - Love and Theft
8. Eminem - Relapse
9. Paul McCartney - Memory Almost Full
10. 50 Cent - The Massacre
They'll be finishing their list with 2.5% of the decade still to go. Maybe they should just do the top 195 and fill in the rest later...
By the way, Pitchfork's #2 album of the 70s (and my #1), London Calling, came out with less than two weeks left in 1979. I'm just sayin'.
However, I don't think it's worth getting too bent out of shape over...when they go back and re-do their list for this decade in 2016 or something, it'll all look veeerry different anyway.
Whatever you think of the site (I think a lot of things about it, not all of them nice), Pitchfork's lists are outstanding--the best I've seen in terms of pointing me towards good stuff I hadn't heard before.
I actually had a big discussion with some friends discussing possible #1s other than the obvious Kid A. Here's our list in order of probability
1. Funeral - Other than the fact that it's just the greatest album, Funeral has all the makings of an all-time classic. Plus, Pitchfork was one of the first sites to shower it in praise, AND it allows them to sell the story of Indie's inevitable permeation into the mainstream.
2. Person Pitch - This record was made for pitchfork. It's warm and gorgeous to the ears, but it's still complicated enough so that the tasteless wont like it.
3. Merriweather Post Pavillion - They already called it the best record of the year, why not just forget the rest of the decade? I'd be shocked if it doesn't T10, however I'm not sure if it really has the gumption to takedown Kid A. Nonetheless, Daydream Nation comparisons can be made.
4. Sound of Silver - Most likely LCD Soundsystem will get more props on the songs list (I suspect All My Friends will take 1st) but I think this one has a very outside shot at the title.
But in the end Pitchfork will go with the album that they compared favorably to OKC in its initial review. Here's my stab at a hypothetical T10
1. Kid A
2. Merriweather Post Pavillion
3. Funeral
4. The Rap Album (either Stankonia or Blueprint)
5. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
6. Person Pitch
7. Sound of Silver
8. The Glow, pt 2
9. Illinois
10. Other Rap Album
Radiohead and Animal Collective will dominate the list. White Blood Cells will make the list, but will be behind De Stijl.
I think you are all forgetting how high White Blood Cells was on their 2000-2004 list (it was 8.)
I see the top 10 going like this:
1. Kid A
2. Funeral
3. Illinois
4. MPP
5. Blueprint
6. Ys
7. Fleet Foxes
8. In Rainbows
9. Late Registration
10. Person Pitch
Like any journalism, the list will be dominated by what is more "in" now than what was popular in the beginning of the decade, i.e, expect a garage rock burial with Is This It? given the booby prize, while baroque pop and dance punk gets lots of love. Of course, I could be completely wrong (Pitchfork has alot of vices and stereotypical hatred of all things mainstream, but they do good lists if you skip the snarky blurbs.)
Yeah, I have seen them say before that White Blood Cells was "Back BEFORE the Stripes sold out", but I think their hatred of Jack will have increased enough to backdate their sellout even more.
The only reason I hesitate to predict Kid A as #1 is because they expect everybody else to do it and will want to do something different. That's why I say either they'll go hip and vote In Rainbows, or they'll go with Merriweather Post Pavilion.
In Rainbows only got 4th on it's end of year list though. From that it's a big jump to best of the decade. I actually expect other mags to be the ones to "be different" and not vote Kid A as the decade's top album. Pitchfork's love for the album is undying.
As I said earlier MPP is a real possibility.
If I remember correctly from past decade lists and year lists, they tend to change some things around so I'm sure there will be changes from the ratings they've given in the past. But still, as fun as these lists are, this one is kind of going to be anti-climatic since we've seen them ranked by Pitchfork before.
Here's my hypothetical top ten
1. Kid A (duh)
2. Merriweather Post Pavilion
3. Funeral
4. The Blueprint
5. Stankonia
6. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
7. In Rainbows
8. Illinois
9. Sound of Silver
10. Person Pitch
I'd say that I'm almost 100% sure AT LEAST five of these albums will make it in their top ten.
Any objections to my list?
I think there's a very good chance that Funeral will come in #1 with Kid A second, for the reason stated above that Pitchfork helped break them. I think this would continue the Ryan Schreiber ego satiation, and also keep them from following suit with all the other sites that may have Kid A #1.
It depends on how they do the voting. Interesting fact ... back in 2004, if one compiled the actual votes (and I, as an incurable nerd, did this), Funeral was actually #3 for the year, behind Smile and Sung Tongs. But it magically appeared at the top of the year-end list, with the rest of the list following in the ranked order. So who really knows.
Either way, I'm somewhat interested. Pitchfork is annoying, but I have to give them their due for tackling lists of massive scope like this. And usually there are some fine choices scattered about.
As far as London Calling, it should be remembered that Rolling Stone actually called it their #1 album of the '80s! Lists that came out at the end of the year, decade, etc. always have gotten the short end, this is nothing new.
I'd forgotten about that RS 80s list with London Calling at the top...I've noticed the borders sometimes get funny depending on when a record was released where. London Calling came out in the UK in '79 but '80 in the US--same thing with Gang of Four's Entertainment!, which, iirc, is in the top 10 of that RS 80s list. Pitchfork is sometimes guilty of this, too (see #6 in the list below).
FWIW, here's Pitchfork's top ten for 2000-2004 only:
1. Kid A
2. The Blueprint
3. Turn on the Bright Lights
4. Stankonia
5. Since I Left You
6. Agaetis Byrjun
7. The Moon & Antarctica
8. White Blood Cells
9. Sung Tongs
10. Original Pirate Material
I think it would be BS if Kid A were not given the top spot, but if Pitchfork did pull a fast one they would go with Person Pitch. Merriweather Post Pavillion has received enough backlash to the point where they would back off of placing it too highly. Person Pitch is a lot like MPP, just without the negativity. Also, a lot of people think that Person Pitch is better than MPP. I also hope they don't forget about the first half of the decade.
I think you are all overrated what they would give YHF. It didn't even make top 10 for 2000-2004.
Person Pitch is the sort of album Pitchfork loves, so I would give it a dark horse shot at their #1. But, I wouldn't say everyone likes it. A lot of people like it, a lot of people (Like me) dislike it.
A lot of people dislike MPP, but a lot of people *love* it too. MPP and Person Pitch are similar records, but Person Pitch is very random stream of consciousness whereas MPP crystallizes the sound into way better songs.
But, random stream of consciousness is the Pitchfork translation of 'sex', so it could definitely make #1.
I think it's a mistake to discount something from being high on the list just because it wasn't that high on previous lists.
Funeral will not be #1. It was #45 in their 2000-2004 list.
So, just curious. If you were to list your 200 favorite albums of the decade, by the time you got down to 200, would we be talkin 4 star albums, 3.5 star albums?
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot may not have made their top ten for the decades first half, but it did score a perfect 10 out of 10. Same for Funeral. It didn't do so well on the same list, but it did get a 9.7 out of 10. This means that their opinions of these albums change frequently. In Rainbows will probably do great because Pitchfork worships the shit out of Radiohead.
All I'm saying is, opinions change, and I really wouldn't go by their list for the beginning of the decade.
Yes that's true, but at the time the list was compiled Funeral was only two or three months old. Since the list was done by concensus, it's very probable that many writers didn't feel comfortable placing such a new record next to albums they had been listening to for years. Sung Tongs made the T10, but was also released earlier in the year.
my favorite act claim at least one position on the top 500 songs list? lol Pitchfork seems to like her earlier material more. I don't see her having an entry on its top 200 albums (even though a couple were pretty darn good).
Asking the question 'Would your top 200 go into 3.5 star albums' is a misleading question to me because I didn't start buying huge amounts of new music until 2005. So whereas I don't have 20 4 star and above albums from 2000-2004 I probably do from 2005-2009. Had I been buying huge amounts of music the whole decade, I probably would have a whole top 200 worth of 4 star albums.
For professional music critics who listen to thousands of albums a year, it should be easy to fill a top 200. (Just hard to choose which borderline ones to leave out.)
How can you listen to 1000s of albums a year? There are only 365 days. That's all you'd get done.
I think the main thing to note is that when they do lists, they poll current staff members. So, the consensus opinion will change from the first half list and definitely will change from the original review.
JR, I think "Hung Up" has a decent shot to make the list. I'd put Confessions on a Dancefloor and American Life in my list, but I doubt Pitchfork will.
I'd also like to add that All My Friends has the number one spot for songs all but locked up. Outkast may give it some competition, but I really couldn't see them going with another song.
SR, I'd be really shocked if All My Friends didn't make their top 10
Also, contenders for their top 10 singles include "Blind", "B.O.B.", Hey Ya!", "Losing My Edge", "House of Jealous Lovers", "Maps", and "My Girls"
I listen to about 10 albums a day while working, that would equal 1000s by the end of the year.
Wow, then we have a year (60's) to digest the list it before we do the 00's (year polls) here on AM.
In my eyes, rock died a little, albumwise, the last few years. Some favorites from the decade:
Strokes - This Is It
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Bob Hund - Omslag: Martin Kann
White Stripes - White Blood Cells/Elephant
Strokes - Is This It?
Ryan Adams - Love Is Hell
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Richard Hawley - Cole's Corner
Favorite songs of the decade?
New Pornographers - All The Things That Go To Make Heaven And Earth
Ryan Adams - Anybody Wanna Take Me Home
Phoenix - Love Like A Sunset
Amon Tobin - Lighthouse
Strapping Young Lad - Imperial
"Hung Up" received much acclaim-it was No. 26 on Pitchfork's year-end list, but I guess it will depend if they poll newer critics, whatnot. Surprised "Music" wasn't on the 2000 year-end listing.
COADF would be on mine, but I don't enjoy American Life quite as much. Neither Music or COADF Placed on Pitchfork's year-end lists, so, yeah, I guess they won't appear.
Anyway most of the top 100 songs will be songs already in the Pitchfork 500 or the addendum for songs of 2007, especially with 2008 quite a weak single year (with Blind and Ready for the Floor probably quite high however).
The few songs released before which will make the top 100 without being in the top 100 will be songs cut because of the rule "only one song by album" (for instance it is pretty sure that Ms Jackson and B.O.B. will both be high will only one was on the Pitchfork 100 )
Anyway, what is sure is that their communication plan is very efficient since all of us music geek have been buzzing about their list for one week.
I hate it how lupe fiasco never gets the attention that he deserves from all of these lists.
It's surprisingly hard to get back into the loop with this forum, when going away on holiday, and being without internet access!
I'd be interested to see where Turn on the Bright Lights turns up in the list. It came top in the year, v. high in the halfdecade list, and is without a doubt one of my favourite albums from this decade. Yet I get theimpression firstly that it was criminally underrated when it first came out (mainly by other publications), but has also slightly lost favour with pitchfork. I have no doubt Kid A will come up trumps - the only possible album to challenge it being Person Pitch. Funeral should challenge it, but I get the impression PF won't rate it as highly as they should.
I also completely agree with Stevo- Lupe Fiasco does not get the recognition he deserves - he is probably my favourite hip-hop act, after outkast and cannibal ox of the decade.
It will be:
1. MPP
2. Sung Tongs
3. Feels
4. Strawberry Jam
5. Here Comes The Indian
6. Campfire Songs
7. Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished
8. Danse Manatee
9. Oh no, we ran out of Animal Collective albums! :(
10. Oh no, we ran out of Animal Collective albums! :(
GOD, I hate that band.
And I hate Pitchfork! Is it possible to be any more pretentious?
Songs 201-500 are up now!
http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/7685-the-top-500-tracks-of-the-2000s-500-201/
Two of my favorites from this decade, "Daniel" by Bat For Lashes and "Danger! High Voltage" by Electric Six, were in this section; I'd thought they'd rank a little higher. (oh well, it is only 1 list after all)
Also, glad to see "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre get some love. Hey Hey, Hey Hey...
Some songs I'm glad to see (would be in my top 200 of the decade)
The Dodos - Fools (which I expected higher but well, great song anyway)
Sufjan Stevens - For The Widows in Paradise (one of Sufjan finest song, a bit overshadowed by songs from Illinoise)
DFA 1979 - Romantic Rights (one of the best riffs of the decade)
Soulwax - NY Excuse
The Roots - Seed 2.0
Vampire Weekend - Walcott (best track of the album for me)
Midlake - Roscoe (the album has been quite a deception but that song is incredibly beautiful)
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
CSS - Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Another Morning Stoner (since it was in the Pitchfork 500, I hope it would make the top 200... one of the best non QOTSA heavy song of the decade)
The Books - Take Time (another Pitchfork 500 out ! )
At the Drive-In - One Armed Scissor (not the best song of Relationship of Command but the most acclaimed one for an unknown reason)
The Thermals - A Pillar of Salt (probably the best surprise so far, it is here ranked 250 but for me it is top 50 of the decade, it is epic, intense but very funny and danceable too with this high-speed riff and those very powerful lyrics)
I thought Sleeping Giant will reach the top 200 since it is in the Pitchfork 500 but it is not even on the top 400... quite a surprise for me ! Surprised to by the low rank of The Moon by the Microphones.
Happy to see:
N.E.R.D.- "Run to the Sun"
Björk- "New World"
Death from Above 1979- "Romantic Rights"
Gwen Stefani- "What You Waiting For" (easily her best song)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs- "Cheated Hearts"
Missy Elliott- "Pass That Dutch"
PJ Harvey- "Good Fortune"
Rachel Stevens- "Some Girls"
Girls Aloud- "Biology"
Björk- "Pagan Poetry" (would make my top 10)
Kylie Minogue- "Love At First Sight"
Bat for Lashes- "Daniel" (I agree it should be higher than 206)
Horrified to see:
Lumidee- "I'll Never Leave You": It's hard to come across a more out of tune voice.
Destiny's Child- "Jumpin' Jumpin'" (pure trash)
And JR, "Don't Tell Me" lands at number 434!
Good to see:
Weezer - Island in the Sun
Decemberists - The Engine Driver
Coldplay - Yellow (expected a shutout of their stuff)
Cut Copy - Out There on the Ice
I was surprised to see "While You Wait For the Others" by Grizzly Bear so low. I mean didn't they give it a 10?
I don't recognize this music. I'm out of time!
I always like these singles lists the best because it reveals more music to me that I haven't heard. I had never heard the Emily Haines, Mum or Jesu songs and listening to the rest of the albums or EP's on rateyourmusic gave me a few new albums to listen to because they sound great.
takes too long to load on my system- thanks for posting some of the inclusions.
And thanks for the Madge report, Moonbeam. :) I guess "Hung Up" could crack the top 200.
200-101
191. Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma
190. Panjabi MC - Mundian to Bach Ke (is Jay-Z even in this song?)
184. Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows
179. Bon Iver - Skinny Love (I like For Emma Better)
177. Eminem - The Real Slim Shady
175. Usher - Yeah!
165. Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
160. 50 Cent - In Da Club - How is this not in the Top 100?
157. Kanye West - Touch the Sky
151. Santogold - LES Artistes
150. Junior Senior - Move Your Feet (maybe they just don't like songs from earlier in the decade as much)
143. Feist - 1234
142. Flaming Lips - Do You Realize???
141. Britney Spears - Toxic (she can't sing, but good music)
139. Daft Punk - Better, Harder, Faster, Stronger
135. The Strokes - The Modern Age
131. Destiny's Child - Say My Name
129. Andrew WK - Party Hard

116. The White Stripes - Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground
114. !!! - Me and Giuliani Down By the Schoolyard (A True Story)
104. Eminem - Lose Yourself (My favorite of 2002)
Songs I expected higher (all top 100 for me) :

Vitalic - la Rock 02 (may be the best electro song of the decade)
Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day
Justice - We Are Your Friends
Kanye West - Jesus Walks
Animal Collective - Leaf House (well, there will probably be Fireworks and My Girls on the top 100, which I really like too, but Leaf House and Purple Bottle are top 100 too for me... while Grass, which might be on their list, is not)
Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up Look Sharp (but I Luv U is still running ! )
Very good surprise (top 100 for me but which I didn't expect to see)
Dirty Projectors - Stillness is the Move (one of the top 3 songs of 2009, strange mix of guitars, hip-hop and oriental groove, awesome !)
The Pipettes - Pull Shapes (almost as irresistible as Rosey)
WTF :
Jimmy Eat World - The Middle : seriously ???? it is not even fun in Guitar Hero !
And I'm also glad to see Mushaboom topping 1234
Great list so far.
Second part (200-101)
Many pleasant surprises here too
Our Way to Fall, The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack, Pull Shapes, You Are the Generation That Bought More Shoes and You Get What You Deserve(#121!!!!) and Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken to name a few.
Expected to be in top 100 Leafhouse (!!??) & Stillness is the Move (the song of the year?). Peach Plum Pear is also my favourite Joanna Newsom song but there might be still left Cosmia, Colleen or Emily (or not).
Only one Radiohead (& Animal Collective) song so far. I expected more.
YAY!
#447: Mylo - "In My Arms" (vastly better than "Drop the Pressure")
#341: Fleet Foxes - "Blue Ridge Mountains" (second best off the album after "Quiet Houses")
#303: Mystikal - "Shake Ya Ass" (hate me for it, but I love it)
#239: The Dismemberment Plan - "The Face of the Earth" (YES!)
#185: Dead Prez - "Hip Hop" (love to see these guys getting some props)
#169: Ludacris - "Southern Hospitality" (I forgot that this was from the '00s)
#157: Kanye West - "Touch the Sky" (really underrated cut)
#122: Cam'ron - "Hey Ma" (why was "Oh Boy" the bigger single?)
#118: Camera Obscura - "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken"
#105: Grinderman - "No Pussy Blues" (one of the funniest songs in a LONG time)
BOO!
#495: Weezer - "Island in the Sun" (so incredibly blah)
#351: Rich Boy - "Throw Some D's" (I swear, the only words are "throw some d's on that bitch")
#276: The Darkness - "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" (never liked it)
#219: Lil Mama - "Lip Gloss"
#180: Gwen Stefani - "Hollaback Girl" (what can be said about this that hasn't already been said?)
#175: Usher et al. - "Yeah!"
#131: Destiny's Child - "Say My Name"
Not sure which side of the fence I'm falling on with Andrew W.K. or Kelis...
Happy to see:
Morrissey- "First of the Gang to Die"
Xiu Xiu- "I Love the Valley OH!"
Ladytron- "Destroy Everything You Touch"- so powerful!
The Strokes- "The Modern Age"
!!!- "Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard": Expected this to be a bit higher, but it's just awesome.
Aaliyah- "We Need a Resolution": I'm hoping "Try Again" cracks the top 100.
Appalled to see:
Twista- "Slow Jamz": How this gets acclaim is beyond me!
Beyonce- "Irreplaceable"
Usher- "Yeah": No.
50 Cent- "In da Club": Hip hop's worst artist
Destiny's Child- "Say My Name"
So far, I think this list is really good. 2 more songs for Grizzly Bear in this section probably means none in the T100, unless they put something like Cheerleader up there but I think that's unlikely. They put down a second Strokes song, so I think Last Nite will crack T100. Dead Leaves and Dirty Ground (one of my favorites) is the first Stripes song, meaning that Seven Nation Army and Fell In Love With A Girl definately made the list. Although 7NA will likely finish a lot lower than Fell in Love.
Animal Collective puts up their first song with Leaf House. I suspect they still have another 2-3 songs in the T100 and that My Girls may T10. Radiohead and OutKast didn't get a song in this update leaving both artists with 1. Nonetheless, it would be unthinkable to have a T100 without Pyramid Song, There There, Ms. Jackson, Hey Ya, and BOB, the latter two will likely T10. Also, there have been 0 LCD Soundsystem songs so far. I wouldn't be shocked if as many as 5 were included in the T100. Here's my hypothetical T10
1. All My Friends
2. B.O.B
3. Hey Ya
4. Blind
5. Losing My Edge
6. Heartbeat
7. My Girls
8. Fell In Love with a Girl
9. Battles
10. Maps
Songs are harder to predict than albums, but I think this one is pretty solid.
I wish you could scan a song with Lala.
All My Friends is a modern classic. It topped the singles list for 2007, a very competitive year, and from what I can tell concensus opinion has only grown more favorable.
well, i was thinking along the lines of people's favourites, not significance. It seems like Pitchfork aren't thinking significance as much as they usually do, this time round. I think one reason many of the entries to last year's PF 500 have got relatively low placements now, is that the purpose of the decades list is somewhat different.
Anyone wants to take a go at placing All My Friends genre-wise, cause dance-punk it ain't
Dance-Prog?
do you think "Hung Up" will get slighted for this list? Look at Britney Spears' "Toxic" (one of just two singles of hers that receives acclaim, none of her albums do). It was no. 3 on Pitchfork's year-end list and #13 on the half-decade list.
You never know how things will turn out with decade lists, though.
And what is wrong with "Irreplaceable"? It's one of my favorite mainstream tracks from the last several years.
JR, I think "Hung Up" will make the top 100. It certainly deserves a nod. "Toxic" did go very far down the list, which makes me worry about the placements of "Can't Get You Out of My Head", "Hung Up" and "My Heartbeat". We shall see!
As for Beyonce, I think she is Satan incarnate. That doesn't mean I haven't used her to teach my students before! They know the Standard Normal table as Beyonce, because students tend not to look at the key and by making a fool out of myself singing "to the left, to the left, every single time the Standard Normal's to the left- don't you ever for a second get to thinkin' it's to the right", it helps them remember.
As for "All My Friends", I'm pulling for it to take the crown. It is my 2nd or 3rd favorite song of the decade (after Annie's "My Heartbeat" and perhaps Kylie's "Can't Get You Out of My Head"), and it easily places among my top 30 songs ever.
Haha harsh on Sasha, ain't ya? hehe She's ubiquitous, but I like some of her songs. asn't too big on "Single Ladies"- overall, I like the restained, softer Beyonce music, I guess. Though "Crazy in Love" is a great single, and I liked "Deja Vu."
Did Pitchfork not publish year-end lists in 2000/2001? Can't find that it did on this site. Did it start in 2003, even though it claims to have been around for the whole of this decade's music?
it did list for albums but not singles 2000-2002. all lists are on the left towards the bottom of the main page
51. Jay Z - Takeover
52. Kanye West feat Dwele - Flashing Lights
53. The Strokes - Someday

Thrilled to see "Try Again" at 75. It totally deserves it! I'm a little surprised to see "Ms. Jackson", "Wolf Like Me" and "Fell in Love with a Girl" so soon, but if it means that "Can't Get You Out of My Head" and "My Heartbeat" are in the top 50, I'm all for it.
I'm surprised that no LCD Soundsystem songs have made it. It seems unlikely that they'll get more than 2 in the top 50. Can "Someone Great" sneak in? Or "Yeah"?
Glad to see Wilco getting decent singles praise (3 on the list thus far.)
Generally, they're all album praise and no single praise. "Jesus, Etc" and "Poor Places" are monsters though.
Ghostface Killah at 60? Cherchez LaGhost is a better song, but neither are top 100 worthy.
98. Beirut - Postcards from Italy
is maybe the best surprise of this part. It's the only reason I still listen to Gulag Orkester occasionally (and right now).
It's also maybe only (pleasant) surprise in this part (well if Robyn has two songs in top 100 it's surprise as well)
Several my favourites are just were I expected them to be (the songs Nassim mentioned (Try Again is maybe best R&B song of the decade) + In the Morning(!!), Such Great Hights etc.)
I'm very surprised and disappointed that there are every bad song from Bracketology which I thought would have vanished after decade lists (Usher, The Game, Futureheads, Madonna (I can't stand Don't Tell Me) etc. There are so many mainstream songs in the list that it makes me wonder have Pitchfork changed their staff.
"Don't Tell Me" is one of her best tracks, period- is there anything you like from this Madge decade? :)
Moonbeam, I'm starting to think Pitchfork passed on "Hung Up" for this year-end tally- top 50 would be too high based on its year-end placement, but, one never knows. Are there any examples thus far of songs that didn't place all that highly on year-end lists, that have done so on this list?
"Lip Gloss" (a WTF selection to me) ranked 27th on the year-end list, and 219 on this decade list; Robyn's "Be Mine" ranked 21st on the year-end list, and 82nd on the decade list. Then you had Britney Spears' "Toxic" ranking 3rd on the year-end list, but "only" 141 on the decade list.
So, again, who knows.

Happy to see:
Robyn- "With Every Heartbeat"
Franz Ferdinand- "Take Me Out": This being at number 44 is quite a surprise though- I feel it should have been in the top 20, and it seems that Franz will indeed slide down the AM lists
Modest Mouse- "Float On"
Kylie- "Can't Get You Out of My Head": Number 37 is a pretty decent showing, even if it would be in my top 3
Clipse- "Grindin'": One of the best hip hop tracks of the decade for sure. I'm bummed that Busta Rhymes will strike out, though.
LCD Soundsystem- "Someone Great":Wow! Didn't expect it at number 22, but I'm happy! "All My Friends" seems like a lock for the top 10, now.
Horrified:
Justin Timberlake- "My Love": Timbertwat ruins a nice Timbaland production.
Kelly Clarkson- "Since U Been Gone": Idol twaddle.
A few downers for me:
The list is likely not to include Duffy's "Mercy" or Janelle Monae's "Many Moons", both of which deserve to crack the top 500 at the very least.
I don't think I've seen Daft Punk's "One More Time" yet, so it could be in top 20 since it's in the Pitchfork 500 book (at least I think it is).
"Someone Great" is actually my favorite LCD Soundsystem song, so I'm happy to see it there. I'm actually surprised that there's been nothing from "Funeral" on the list yet (either that or I didn't look very hard).
"Rebellion (Lies)" was in the 60s.
there will be no "Hung Up" on this list. You'd think it would have been somewhere in thetop 500, being it did place #26 on the 2005 year-end list. Ah, well.
"Can't Get You Out of My Head" appearing was very expected.
I'm hoping for John Wayne Gacy, Jr.
