Re: NME Top 50 Darkest Albums of All Time

Surely there are death metal records darker than these...

A Rush of Blood to the Head?!? wtf!?!?! NME is ridiculous.

Some non-mentions:

The Microphones- The Glow, Part 2 (Maybe the darkest album I've ever heard in my life)
Neil Young- Tonight's the Night (A eulogy for two fallen friends by a Neil Young dealing with his own demons.)
Wilco- Summerteeth (of course the NME doesn't even know Wilco exists. Still...9 out of 10 of these albums don't have a song as dark as "Via Chicago." or "She's a Jar". or "Summerteeth". or "A Shot in the Arm". or...)
Robert Wyatt- Rock Bottom (released after he lost use of his legs. Take that you shoe gazing Coldplay dorks!)
Nirvana- MTV Unplugged in New York (The last complete statement by Cobain before he committed suicide. The set was decorated like a funeral. Every cover song he chose was about death, save one.)
John Lennon- Plastic Ono Band (Perhaps the first great dark rock album by a major artist.)
Bon Iver- For Emma, Forever Ago (the ultimate hermetic nervous breakdown album.)
Echo & The Bunnymen- Take your pick... (How could they leave out Echo and the Bunnymen from this list?)
Sufjan Stevens- Age of Adz (probably too new, but still...intense, raw, demented. Dark.)
The Flaming Lips- Embryonic (See above)
Pink Floyd- The Wall (who hasn't sulked to this album at one point?)

Re: NME Top 50 Darkest Albums of All Time

Really? No Joy Division? They're pretty dark.

Closer is #22.

Re: NME Top 50 Darkest Albums of All Time

well if Embryonic is to new they should have at least included Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Also the woman of the moment PJ Harvey should have had either To Bring You My Love or White Chalk included. Since they were so big on Suede back in the day I'm suprised they didn't have Dog Man Star listed either. I'm also shocked they didn't list Weezer's Pinkerton. I would have chosen Ladies and Gents...by Spiritualized over Let Come Down. Also suprised they left out Slowdive, Jesus and Mary Chain, Suzanne Vega and Cat Power.

Re: NME Top 50 Darkest Albums of All Time

They should certainly have included John Cale's "Music For A New Society". With lyrics as joyful as «all so that it would be a stronger world / a stronger loving world to die in»...

And the music... Scary.

Re: NME Top 50 Darkest Albums of All Time

I just want to reiterate that putting A Rush of Blood to the Head on this list is like putting The Carebears movie on the list of all-time darkest films.

Re: NME Top 50 Darkest Albums of All Time

Another obvious one they left out: DIRT by ALICE IN CHAINS. How much darker could it get than Dirt?

Believe it or not, a Care Bears movie remains to this day the only movie to frighten my twin daughters. They were young at the time, but there was kind of a scary bad guy in it.

So, my point is, the Care Bears movie is pretty fucking dark... darker than A Rush of Blood to the Head, at any rate.

My mom said I cried during the carebears movie...granted I was 1 year old. But yes, Rush of Blood to the Head is about as dark as an episode of the Carebears.

Re: NME Top 50 Darkest Albums of All Time

Any Care Bear's movie is NOTHING compared to Watership down. Now that movie will screw kids up for a long time.

Re: NME Top 50 Darkest Albums of All Time

They should include Venetian Snares' Doll Doll Doll. Subject matter is way darker than No. 1 on list.
