EOD Eligibility Questions

http://www.theboombox.com/2009/12/02/best-albums-2000s/

Haven't seen this hip-hop-oriented site on AM before. Is this top 10 eligible for the spreadsheet?

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

They also have a songs list here

It seems to meet all the eligibility criteria, and it's a hip-hop focused website that released a hip-hop list so I guess it'll fall under genre-specific. I think Henrik said those wouldn't go into your spreadsheet?

They should be included, but with a lower weight.

Thanks. Did you give the Decibel list a lower weight when I sent the last update?

Yes

Henrik, what say you?

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

http://www.urb.com/2009/12/17/ghostly-international-best-110-of-the-decade-list

Henrik, I need to ask about this one, too. It's compiled by the staff of a record label (with their own artists omitted from consideration). Eligible?

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

Harold, I think both these lists are eligible, although Austin Town Hall's staff info "We have a staff. Small. But handsome. Staff bios coming soon." is not completely satisfying.

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

Henrik, I need eligibility verdicts on the following new submissions:

http://www.metro.co.uk/metrolife/music/805222-top-10-albums-of-the-noughties

http://indiecaciones.blogspot.com/2009/12/los-100-mejores-discos-de-la-decada_3793.html

http://www.dailyiowan.com/2009/12/15/Arts/14896.html

I already know the Zundfunk list from Germany is eligible, as its EOY lists have previously appeared on AM. Thanks in advance!

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

Difficult decisions again. Here are my suggestions, which could be discussed.

http://www.metro.co.uk/metrolife/music/805222-top-10-albums-of-the-noughties
Perhaps not eligible. The music section of the Swedish Metro is quite tiny compared with the biggest Swedish newspapers. Maybe it's different in the UK? It's not really a top 10 of the '00s but a "top album by year" feature, which also gives it a slightly lower credibility.

http://indiecaciones.blogspot.com/2009/12/los-100-mejores-discos-de-la-decada_3793.html
If someone can tell me that this site/list is made by a larger group of people then it's eligible. Until then, it's not.

http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/editorials/id.1459/title.hiphopdxs-top-best-albums-of-the-decade
Eligible.

http://www.dailyiowan.com/2009/12/15/Arts/14896.html
Not eligible, I think. Another independent university magazine that would have an OK Alexa if it had been a music-only publication, but it's not.

From the site "Fast 'n' Bulbous", only one guy, but I've seen him as a reference on the site.
So, eligible?

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

To quote Henrik:

Henrik
This is difficult, but the Fast 'n' Bulbous, Scaruffi, Christgau and Strong lists/ratings are lifetime achievements rather than one-off articles.
So his ratings on the website count but I'm unsure if his lists do as well. Henrik did say lists too back then, but I don't think they have been included before from single critics.

I think it's a good thing, because otherwise you'd be counting their votes twice. First they rate an album and that rating will obviously be reflected in their lists as well.

But... this is pretty definitively identified as an EOD list, and for purposes of the spreadsheet, I'm guessing it should probably be included. Henrik?

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

Just did a quick check on AM and it seems that his all-time list is in fact included. His '90s list is not though, so I agree: Henrik?

Edit: And what would that mean for his year-lists? I love the fact that his 90s lists perfectly match with whatever from the 90s is in his all-time list. The same goes for his year lists matching his decade/all-time lists, so again I wonder if this wouldn't unfairly give the highest albums on his list points three times (all-time, decade and year).

Edit #2: His all-time list also gets updated still, and most (probably all except for the top 15 or 20) rankings on AM aren't correct anymore.

Edit #3: His ratings of the various albums don't seem to be included at all, whereas the they are for the likes of Strong/Christgau/etc. Maybe it would be fairest to only include his ratings and none of his lists?

Sorry about this rant.

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

A single critic should never be counted twice and in the case of Fast'n'bulbous I have included his alltime list (which needs to be updated at AM) so I don't want to add the '00s list as well. Including his ratings would probably be the best thing, but that would take A LOT of time, which I don't have. But if someone is interested in collecting all the ratings for me, I will include them of course.

I might be interested in doing this, but a few questions first:

1. How do you include these ratings? Do negative ratings move the album down a few spots (hypothetically, I know that 1 review won't have much of an impact)? If so, fastnbulbous.com might take a different approach because he only lists albums with an 8 or higher.

2. He includes several albums on his lists that are ineligible (most obvious example is "Singles Going Steady" by the Buzzcocks). I imagine his 1949-1964 list has a lot more compilations and the other years probably have a few as well--how do you want to handle this?

3. How would you like these formatted?

Thanks Stephan! However, if he only lists albums with ratings 8 or higher, then maybe the all-time list is a better choice after all.

1. With lists, albums not on the list move down on AM. With ratings, albums with a poor rating move down while albums without rating stay where they are. In this case, if ratings were used, would albums without a rating move down or stay where they are?

2. Ineligible albums are not a problem. Their ratings would not be used since these albums are not in my database.

3. We can discuss this later if we decide to include the ratings.

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

You may be right about the list being better than the ratings. However, that would mean we miss ratings on about 5000 albums. Maybe the year-lists would be better in that respect, although they would also be a lot more work.

By the way, could you have a look at the Silent Ballet topic for its eligibility?

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

Would this list be eligible? It's compiled from the staff of the website, and whilst it might be called a punk website the list also includes a lot of other genres and bands (such as Animal Collective etc.)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=1469401

They've also made lists of the year from 2005, in case it is eligible

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

Eligible. Harold, are you still reading this thread?

Yes, and I'll add the EOY list. Is there an EOD on this site that I'm not finding? If not, why is this in the EOD thread?

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

Nah, there isn't. I guess this thread is just being used for all eligibility questions.

I'm afraid that none of these two meet the Alexa ranking criteria.

3) I don't know for this one two :

A top album each year since 2002 and a top 2000-2009 in the same page.

4) And this one :

Chronicart, yes. Thanks in advance for writing.

The other ones, no.

Hello Henrik, I would just insist for this one. This site has create for plublished this list, the Alexa Ranking is necessarily lower than a normal site. 37 men and women is more than a paper magazine, I found their idea to combine excellent, not you ?

So this similar to nollnolltalet.se, but with French critics and about albums? If so, I agree that it should be included.

It's 37 french critics who works in 37 different music site who came together to elect the 20 best albums of the year and create this site for publisher their results. (i'm sorry, for your link, I don't speak dutch (if it's dutch?), so I don't understand the purpose).

1) I don't found !
2) It's a webzine with 5 critics
3) A webzine with 1 critic I think. i'm not sure.

A question Henrik, where we can find if the list of previous years of eligible site are already take in AM ? For example, the EOY previous lists of Magicrpm ?

Re: EOD Eligibility Questions

Henrik, for my last question ? What is the answer ?
I have 4 "guides" by the FNAC music sellers :
- A top 150 albums : soul, funk
- A top 200 albums : jazz
- A top 150 albums : blues
- A top 500 albums : pop-rock

Oh, I promised Harold that I would make such a list, but I haven't. What you can do is to look at the spreadsheets for 2007 and 2008 (links at the bottom of the "Year lists" page on the main AM site).

These lists are all-time lists, aren't they? Then I for sure don't need them this week, there's no rush at all. And before you write them down, are you sure that they are staff-only lists. If FNAC's buyers have been involved or if the listst have some kind of best-seller perspective then they are not eligible. However, of course I hope that they are eligible. Thanks in advance!

- These lists are all time list yes !
- It's the "disquaires" of FNAC only choices. It's write in the end of the books with the names of the disquaires who choose the albums.
- In the lists, some albums are choose to be "indispensable". I don't know how to make the difference between an "indispensable" album and other ?
- Some albums are best of (the most in the 50's), what I have to do with these ?

Good news! If it's easy to distinguish the indispensable albums from the rest, then please highlight them for me. If there are not too many best ofs then I would prefer if you write them down as well, preferably with a highlight as well. Something like this:

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (indispensable)
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
Chuck Berry - The Great Twenty-Eight (indispensable/best of)
...
