Films of the '80s: 1983

You can post a list of anywhere between 5 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100 round. Due to my holiday schedule the deadline is July 3rd.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
10. 9
...
20. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the great (and awful) films released in 1983, from a variety of sources:
IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

Re: Films of the '80s: 1983

Strange for me, the poorest year since the beginning of this game for american films.
Moreover, seeing the first four lists, we can see a scattering of the votes. No easy leader this time I think.
I don't see the Scorcese "King of comedy", is it really good ?

1. Tchao Pantin (Berri)

It was determined to be a 1982 film, and ended up making the top ten in the last round. And it IS really good.

I look at that same list and think "Strong year."

I'm surprised Sans Soleil is getting so much support. Normally essayic films only get two or three high votes and everybody else against.

Sans Soleil has received only two votes, so including (presumably) BillAdama's, 2-3 high votes isn't out of the question. On top of that, it's one of the most acclaimed films of all time; not terribly surprising it would get some votes.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1983

Who's got 1984 recommendations? All I have so far is Paris Texas, Once Upon A Time In America, The Terminator, and Spinal Tap. (And I plan to watch Blood Simple and Stranger than Paradise.)

The first two are two of my all time favorites. (And not the weird inaccessible ones.)

Re: Films of the '80s: 1983

My 1984 recommendations :

Amadeus - Forman
Forbrydelsens element [The Element of Crime] - Von Trier
Another Country - Kanievska

Re: Films of the '80s: 1983

Quite surprising results for this year, I'd never have predicted at least half of the top 10 to do as well as they did.

#. Film (Director) - Points/Votes/#1s
1. Zelig (Woody Allen) - 318/11/1
2. The Right Stuff (Philip Kaufman) - 219/8/2
3. Trading Places (John Landis) - 211/9/1
4. The Meaning Of Life (Terry Jones) - 205/10/1
5. Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of The Jedi [Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi] (Richard Marquand) - 199/10/0
6. Videodrome (David Cronenberg) - 185/7/0
7. Nostalghia (Andrei Tarkovsky) - 150/3/3
8. Scarface (Brian De Palma) - 140/6/1
9. L'Argent (Robert Bresson) - 125/5/1
10. Sans Soleil (Chris Marker) - 123/4/

John Landis joins the 2-film director group, and Nostalghia gets the highest average score ever with over 2 voters.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1983

I thought the deadline was July 3rd?

Re: Films of the '80s: 1983

Oops, you are correct, my bad. The only (semi-)regular voter who hasn't voted yet is Mindrocker, so if he (or someone else) still wants to vote I'll update the results. Can't delete them anymore.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1983

Go ahead Stephan. I'm skipping the rather weak 1983 (by the way, not one vote for The Hunger? It would've been in my top), and will join again for '84 which seems like a more promising year.

I hadn't voted yet (and I've always voted since we started these movie polls). With 1981 1983 is the year I have seen the least movies from 80's. My top 10 would have been (and is).
1. Zelig
2. Rikos ja rangaistus
3. Videodrome
4. Scarface
5. Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
6. Rumble Fish
7. Return of Jedi
8. The Outsiders
9. Something Wicked This Way Comes
10. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
Only the top 5 are so good that I would have given them the maximum points.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1983

Terribly sorry Petri, you are of course correct. I counted the voters and missed one, but missed the fact that Andre joined us this year, giving us one more voter than the previous years. Your vote will of course be counted; if you want to adjust the points for your bottom 5 feel free to do so.

Thanks Stephan
I guess it won't change the results whether I give the maximum points or not (I haven't seen L'Argent or Sans Soleil which I might like more than Rumble Fish or Mr. Lawrence (Outsiders and SWTWC hadn't got so much support so far) so I kind of don't want to change the top 10). So let's say.
6. Rumble Fish 12 p
7. Return of Jedi 10 p
8. The Outsiders 8 p
9. Something Wicked This Way Comes 7 p
10. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence 5 p

Re: Films of the '80s: 1983

Oops, somewhat forgot about this one. Petri rearranged the top 10 a little bit, but the same films are progressing.
