Films of the '90s: 1998

You can post a list of anywhere between 5 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100 round. The deadline is January 13th.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
10. 9
...
20. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the great (or awful) films released in 1998, from a variety of sources:
IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

Re: Films of the '90s: 1998

Three suggestions from me this year:

1. Le Comte de Monte Cristo - My favorite take on one of my favorite books, Depardieu is magnificent as Dantes.
2. Crna Macka, Beli Macor - To me, better even than Underground.
3. Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels - Guy Ritchie's hilarious debut.

I also kinda love "Meet Joe Black", but I'm aware that I'm pretty much alone in that opinion.

That's one I wanted to see but couldn't.

Re: Films of the '90s: 1998

It's practically already guaranteed to be in the next round, so you still have some time left to find it.

Re: Films of the '90s: 1998

I can watch region 2 DVDs now, but the cheapest price I've found is about $23. I'll have to keep my eye out for a cheaper option.

Re: Films of the '90s: 1998

I'm flying to Brazil the 11th/12th and I have to get settled the first few days, so I might not have the results up on the 14th. I will try to post them as soon as possible though.

Re: Films of the '90s: 1998

I have mixed feelings about Saving Private Ryan. On one hand, the Normandy Beach scene is probably one of the best war scenes in movie history (Though dwarfed by most of The Thin Red Line). On the other hand, the premise has plausibility issues, and the film has the forced sentimentality symptomatic of being directed by Spielberg.

Festen is a great discovery. Unfortunately my region free DVD player now has a jammed disc tray, so I'm once more region locked, and can't watch Black Cat White Cat. I'm looking forward to Happiness which came in the mail today.

Are you going to watch (or have you watched) Los Amantes del Circulo Polar? I think the film still needs some support.

That would be great, Gillingham. If anyone is interested, this film is available on YouTube , in original version with English subtitles.

Re: Films of the '90s: 1998

That film was #1 on my to-watch list, but I just didn't have the time to watch it unfortunately.

I'm halfway through it right now, but part 5 of the file keeps freezing up on me. I'm enjoying it, I'd probably slide it in at #6.

Is anyone going to be voting for Beau Travail (Claire Denis, 35 Shots of Rum, White Material) for 1999? I bought the VHS, but I need to know if there's any need to watch it sooner rather than later.

You're points could possibly seal the deal. You can always watch it on Youtube if the file keeps jamming, like Miguel suggested.

I'm interested in watching another of Denis' films, as I've only seen White Material and I liked it. But not that soon I'm afraid.

Re: Films of the '90s: 1998

Finished watching it. Yeah, slide Lovers Of The Arctic Circle in at #6 on my list and Run Lola Run down to #7. Everything else lower on my list got less points.

Re: Films of the '90s: 1998

The Truman Show (3 points)
Pleasantville (5 points)
Ringu (1 point)
Should I take those points as they are or should Truman and Pleasantville be rearranged?

Re: Films of the '90s: 1998

Title (Director) - Points/Votes/#1s
1. The Big Lebowski (Joel Coen) - 461/14/2
2. Festen [The Celebration] (Thomas Vinterberg) - 392/11/3
3. Rushmore (Wes Anderson) - 229/10/1
4. The Truman Show (Peter Weir) - 222/12/1
5. Thin Red Line (Terrence Malick) - 222/8/3
6. Happiness (Todd Solonz) - 216/9/1
7. Saving Private Ryan (Steven Spielberg) - 213/10/1
8. American History X (Tony Kaye) - 156/8/0
9. Los amantes del círculo polar [The Lovers of the Arctic Circle] (Julio Médem) - 132/5/1
10. Crna Macka, Beli Macor [Black Cat, White Cat] (Emir Kusturica) - 131/5/0

The Coen Brothers, as expected, easily get their 4th film through, with only Mindrocker not voting for The Dude. Spielberg joins the ranks of Kieslowski and Tarantino and Kustarica gets a second film through.
