Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Welcome to the 8th part of the '70s acclaimed music forum poll. This month we will deal with 1977, the year The King died.

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per album. The deadline is midnight on the 31th of August. For the scoring, rules and other details check here

You should have a look at the 1977 album and song lists before voting (but you can of course vote for songs and albums not in the AM list)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

1977 is a year I don't know that much I realize...

A pivotal year, the year punk-rock explosed. An edgy year I would say. Sharp as a knife.

Anyway, this is my list in progress

It is very short at the moment (8 items) but I have the rest of the month to do the listening and re-listening job. I guess there'll be the Suicide album, the Marley, Saturday Night Fever, Culture, Townes van Zandt, etc...

I really love the decade polls. I mean if you take it seriously you discover many many things and you see histrory unfolding before you. A real experience.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

I'm surprised there are so few votes for My Aim Is True so far. Other than my 1st place vote I think I saw a 6th, a 9th, and a 13th.

For me it's not even close. In my current rankings, it falls like:

#31 My Aim Is True
#137 Heroes
#139 Low

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

"Don't sell the bear's skin before you killed it" as we would say in France. I would have bet one week ago that only 11 albums stood a chance to make it to next round, but there are now 13 albums fighting for survival.
5 of them seems out of reach but anything can happen for the 8 others (especially since the current #13 will more than probably be in the top 3 of someone who has not voted yet...) so don't forget to vote before Thursday !

And regarding songs, everything is still possible (there is even a chance that Heroes does not end #1 ! )

Well then I suggest you to vote X-Ray Spex. It seems it has 105 points (35+30+40) so I guess it needs also a little help to get into top 10.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Sorry PopElton, I heard that song but it won't be on my top20...

Yep, it's on my shortlist. I already have (and love) Half Machine Lip Moves by them, so I highly recommend you give that a whirl before we get to 1979!

I have a bad feeling "Spider and I" and "By This River" are going to split each others' votes.

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: THE ORIGINAL MOVIE SOUND TRACK "Saturday Night Fever"

Henrik, I hope that my #6 for “By This River” would be enough, but I’m not sure. And don’t worry, Nicolas, this position was previous to Henrik’s suggestion. I simply love that beautiful song, especially after seeing the moving Nanni Moretti’s movie La stanza del figlio that I strongly recommend…

My favourite Spanish song of 1977: Veneno's "Los delincuentes"

The first album of Veneno (Poison) is considered the best Spanish albums ever. Or should I say WAS, because although different magazines like Rockdelux or Efe Eme put it at the top, this very month of September of 2009 the Spanish edition of Rolling Stone published a list with “Best 50 Rock Spanish Albums Ever” and they did not include Veneno debut at all. So in the Spanish Acclaimed Music list I’m compiling this album falls down to number three being surpassed by Serrat's "Mediterráneo" (1971) and oddly a posterior (and inferior) album by Kiko Veneno, "Échate un cantecito" (1992). But, you know, maybe it’s better simply not consider at all this (awful) Rolling Stone list, the Spanish edition is particularly detestable.
So, please, consider it still the best Spanish album ever. After Franco's death thing were changing quickly, and the music world could not stay apart. "Veneno" (1977) was the result of the fortunate collision between (again) tradition and renewal and especially between gypsies and whiteys, between the shanty town and the university. Kiko Veneno was not gipsy, he even was graduate in philosophy but he has lived the nomad life of a hippie (that led him to live some time in the US). However the brothers Raimundo Amador and Rafael Amador were part of a gipsy family with flamenco tradition, having previously played with Montoya family. The evenings in Kiko's house listening to Dylan and Zappa, playing flamenco guitars and smoking tons and tons of grass opened the minds of both parts. Kiko became addicted to flamenco and the Amador brothers wanted to introduce the rock attitude in flamenco music.
Ricardo Pachón, producer of Lole y Manuel, always alert, saw the potential of these bizarre but talented people. And, oddly enough, was able to find a contract with an important company like CBS. I must point to the fact that in this particular historical moment (just after the dictator’s death) everything seemed possible and record companies were more likely to take risks. Their first (and last) album by Veneno was recorded live in one take with the musicians under the effect of the LSD that someone threw on the tea. Its intuitive, amateurish, fresh and raw sound that at the time was no more than a rarity proved to be largely influential.
I’ve selected the song "Los delincuentes" ("The Delinquents"), the only song with two takes with the final version using the beginning and final of the two takes united (audibly) at 3:38. This is Kiko’s mocking portrait of his daily life in his Sevilla’s home, with all kinds of dealers, gypsies and delinquents going in and out of his den of iniquity. He describes them with his particular (and very Andalusian) sense of humour ("They stole two cars every day / one at daytime and another at night time") and with some tenderness too. The mockery tone is accentuated with the use of the kazoo that goes back to the times when Kiko travelled with a troupe of popular theatre ("The sign is for the important ones / this cart is for the comedians”).
But let’s listen to the (maybe) two most important Spanish critics. Santi Carrillo, director of Rockdelux: "The visionary “Veneno” with the quite calamitous voice of Kiko and those flamenco guitars fallen over a raw sound that showed in a surrealistic way, between the hippie trip and the gypsy curiosity, that talent cannot be tamed or easily assimilated: the triumph of… the incomprehension". And prestigious Diego Manrique that was one of the few that supported the band in their brief lifespan: "For the ones who listen today “Veneno” for the first time it may be difficult to understand all that seventies commotion. Let me swear that there was nothing similar before: the braiding of guitars and percussion, the stabbed guitars, the rough throats, the complicated structures with wooden guitars".

LOS DELINCUENTES
Composer: Kiko Veneno
Performer: VENENO
First release: 1977 ("Veneno"album)
Length: 4’49”

Me quiero asegurar

Mmm, he reconocido sus huellas,
esta noche dormiré con Estrella.

Me quiero asegurar

Me quiero asegurar
que mi sombrero está bien roto
y los rayos pueden entrar en mi cabeza.
Te quiero conquistar
con el suave viento gratis y fresco
de mi abanico de cristal,
de mi abanico de cristal,
de mi abanico de crista-aaa-aal.

THE DELINQUENTS

I meet all kinds of delinquents,
sometimes they eat cold food and sometimes hot.
They stole two cars every day,
one at daytime and another at night-time.
I’m used to their tenderness
and to their easiness to sight the trash.
At the end they ruin me
and they sold me like a sardine tin can.

I want to make sure
that my hat is well torn
so the rays can get into my head.
I want to captivate you
with the soft wind free and fresh
of my crystal fan,
of my crystal fan,
of my crystal fa-aaa-aan.

I know also the dealers,
the doctors-to-be and the admirals.
Necklace and jewellery sellers
knock to the door of my house.
As for me, I look through the peephole
but someone’s is blocking it with the finger.
Mmm, I recognized the fingerprints,
tonight I’m going to sleep with Estrella.

I want to make sure
that my hat is well torn
so the rays can get into my head.
I want to captivate you
with the soft wind free and fresh
of my crystal fan,
of my crystal fan,
of my crystal fa-aaa-aan.

I forgot all the prayers,
the laments of priests and preachers.
I look myself at the mirror every morning
and I’m astonished of having still the same face.
I ask who’s stronger here,
I stretch my ears and count my teeth.
The sign is for the important ones,
this cart is for the comedians.

I want to make sure
that my hat is well torn
so the rays can get into my head.
I want to captivate you
with the soft wind free and fresh
of my crystal fan,
of my crystal fan,
of my crystal fa-aaa-aan.

The images on this You Tube video got nothing to do with Veneno but at least you can listen to the complete original version.

Moreover, I knew you loved the song because we discussed it when I visited you in Spain, and that's why I wrote the urgent request. I think you said that you "discovered" the song because I put it very high in my all-time songs list. It makes me so happy that my lists can have such an influence! Anyway nicolas, I could definitely see a comment like yours being aimed at me.

BTW Honorio, your lists are great as always. It's not a shame for "By This River" to be behind that top 5.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Henrik
Moreover, I knew you loved the song because we discussed it when I visited you in Spain, and that's why I wrote the urgent request. I think you said that you "discovered" the song because I put it very high in my all-time songs list.

Thanks Henrik for you compliments. Yes, we talked about it, I discovered the song because of your list but the appearance on the Nanni Moretti’s movie enhanced it. I knew it was going to be your undisputed number one. In fact you told me a beautiful story about the lyrics talking directly to Malin and you in a particular moment of your lives. Maybe one day you can tell it on the forum (if you like of course).

Here we are
Stuck by this river,
You and I
Underneath a sky that's ever falling down, down, down
Ever falling down.

Through the day
As if on an ocean
Waiting here,
Always failing to remember why we came, came, came:
I wonder why we came.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

You'll have my ballot in the afternoon, promis !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

1977 is, indeed, a great year. A year I didn't know very well.
For punk/alternative lovers it must be like 1968-72 for classic rock lovers (like me). I discovered or re discovered great albums (Suicide, Lust For Life). But in nicolas' musical universe Brel stays above all the others with his swan song masterpiece.

Albums :

1. Jacques Brel – Brel (all-time #15 )
2. Suicide – Suicide (133)
3. Television - Marquee Moon (152)
4. Fela Kuti – No Agreement (178)
5. The Clash - The Clash (181)
6. Iggy Pop - Lust For Life (187)
7. Bob Marley - Exodus
8. Culture - Two Sevens Clash
9. Townes Van Zandt - Live At The Old Quarter, Houston Texas
10. Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
11. Various Artists - Saturday Night Fever
12 The Congos - Heart Of The Congos
13. Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
14. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
15. Renaud - Laisse Béton
16. Muddy Waters - Hard Again
17. Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue
18. David Bowie - Low
19. Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express
20 Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell

Bubbling under : "Heroes"

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Both polls are still very close (only 5 points between album #10 and album #11 and 1 point between song #10 and song #11 !) so late voters (if there is some left) can make an impact !
You have about 23h left, I will give the results around 2pm Paris time.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Nassim, I'll give you another song list this afternoon

i have edited my previous post, removing the song list

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Sorry Nassim, but I've made a few minor ajustments to my song AND album lists, so forget about the old album list

I had overrated Fela's "No Agreement" in the old album list (I often overrate him, probably because I love West Africa so much).

And in the song list, I included at a symbolic 24th spot, the beautiful "By This River" that I just heard after reading Honorio's and Henrik's comments.

I had heard it at least twice : in the beautiful Moretti movie, although I don't remember the song in the movie, and another time at home while going through a few Eno songs. I remember I found it different from the rest of his production, a little more personal, straightforward, moving. But I'm not an Eno connaisseur.

Albums :

1. Jacques Brel – Brel (all-time #15 )
2. Suicide – Suicide (133)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Once more about "By This River"...

I bought "Before and After Science" when I lived in the UK (close to the English Channel - "The River") during 2004-2005. For a period both my wife and I were disappointed with our work situations and were longing home to Sweden. And right then, on the way to work, "By This River" played on the car stereo.

Here we are
Stuck by this river,
You and I
Underneath a sky that's ever falling down, down, down
Ever falling down.

Through the day
As if on an ocean
Waiting here,
Always failing to remember why we came, came, came:
I wonder why we came.

We were completely thrilled by these lyrics as they described our situation exactly.

Today, when I think back about the time in the UK, I have many good memories. No regrets about the trip at all. And "By This River" has remained special to me, it's so sad but it also has one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

It's still September on this side of the pond, so here's albums:

1. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
2. David Bowie - Heroes
3. Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
4. Original Soundtrack - Saturday Night Fever
5. Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue
6. Bob Marley - Exodus
7. The Clash - The Clash
8. Billy Joel - The Stranger
9. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks,...
10. Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express
11. Weather Report - Heavy Weather
12. Steely Dan - Aja
13. David Bowie - Low

2. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way
3. David Bowie - Heroes
4. The Commodores - Brick House
5. Bob Marley - Jammin'
6. Parliament - Flash Light

16. Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
17. Ramones - Sheena is a Punk Rocker
18. Earth, Wind & Fire - Serpentine Fire

If you can't tell, I'm not a big fan of punk.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

As so many have said before...what a year. I kept on listing well past 20 because I just couldn't stop myself. Had Rumours come out in some other year, I can easily see myself listing it #1, but for '77, its my #11. I could even see listing my #15, Rocket to Russia, as #1 in some other year. I have little insight into what explains why so many good albums were released in '77. One can of course point to the punk/new wave explosion, but that doesn't satisfyingly explain anything. For one thing, there were many absolutely stunning albums that weren't punk--Running on Empty, Rough Mix, Aja, Rumours, Hard Again, etc.--and weren't even (unlike, say, '78's Some Girls and Who Are You) reactions to punk.

I'd not listened to many of these in years. I'd almost completely fogotten about Rough Mix and Black Vinyl Shoes--I'm glad I saw the latter on Netjade's list or I probably would have forgotten it enturely (plus I'd mistakenly thought it was a '78 album). The Shoes need to be discovered; what a small, odd, but beautiful gem that album is.

I'm not sure why Cheap Trick isn't more appreciated--they're not on many people's lists. Their first two I think are great: the first is one scary-ass record, the second, a power pop masterpiece. And that brings me to a topic that's puzzled me for some time: Look at all the artists who released two albums--in fact, two billiant albums--in '77. At least one album a year and often two was common back then. When three years passed between Springsteen's Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town, it was noteworthy. Now three years between albums is routine (e.g, we're rapidly approaching three years since Neon Bible; where's the next Arcade Fire album?). If an artist releases albums less than two years apart the artist is considered prolific. Why? One explanation I guess is that a CD tends to contain much more music than vinyl, so an artist has to work longer to get enough material. But is there more to it than that? Any thoughts on the matter will be appreciated.

One last thing before shutting up and giving my list (I'll pass on listing the many albums I regret not getting around to hearing, though there are several specific ones I have in mind): The lowest album I list here has perhaps my favorite song of the year--"Heroes." It's chillingly beautiful and captures the mood of the times perfectly. The album is so low on my list just because I don't much care for anything else on it. But that song...

Now the list--I hope I haven't forrgotten anything:

1) The Clash - The Clash
2) Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
3) Television - Marquee Moon
4) Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks Here's teh Sex Pistols
5) Talking Heads - Talking Heads 77
6) Wire - Pink Flag
7) Al Green - The Belle Album
8) Cheap Trick - Cheap Trick
9) Jackson Bowne - Running on Empty
10) Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane - Rough Mix
11) Steely Dan - Aja
12) Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
13) Cheap Trick - In Color
14) Iggy Pop - Lust for Life
15) Ramones - Rocket to Russia
16) Ramones - Leave Home
17) Shoes - Black Vinyl Shoes
18) Iggy Pop - The Idiot
19) The Damned - Damned Damned Damned
20) Muddy Waters - Hard Again
21) Heartbreakers - LAMF
22) Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors
23) Brian Eno - Before and After Science
24) Joni Mitchell - Don Juan's Reckless Daughter
25) Ornette Coleman - Dancing in My Head
26) Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue
27) Ian Dury - New Boots and Panties
28) Original Soundtrack - Saturday Night Fever
29) Randy Newman - Little Criminals
30) The Jam - In the City
31) Bob Marley - Exodus
32) The Congos - Heart fo the Congos
33) Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation
34) David Bowie - Low
35) Suicide - Suicide
36) David Bowie - "Heroes"

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Here are the results :

Albums :

1) Television - Marquee Moon
2) David Bowie - Low
3) Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
4) Sex Pistols, The - Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols
5) Clash, The - The Clash
6) Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
7) Suicide - Suicide
8) Talking Heads - Talking Heads 77
9) David Bowie - Heroes
10) Wire - Pink Flag

Low took a late lead following Greg's vote but the 5 final voters helped Marquee Moon take the first place back.
There has been a tough fight for 3rd place too and Rumours only take it with a 2 points margin, far behind the top 2.

Fred, Georgie, Henrik and Greg can blame Michael, Harold Wexler, Jonah and me for the 11th place of Aja, since without any of those 4 votes, Pink Flag would have been eliminated.
Trans-Europe Express and Exodus started very poorly and despite impressive come-back could not made up for their backlog.
The contrary happened for Lust for Life which was still qualified after half the voter casted their ballots but lost track after that.

Anyway, the 10 albums qualified for next round are the 10 who appeared in most ballots.

We can also notice that our top 16 albums is the AM top 16 in a different order.

Songs :

1) David Bowie - "Heroes"
2) Television - Marquee Moon
3) Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive
4) Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
5) Iggy Pop - Lust For Life
6) Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way
7) Sex Pistols, The - God Save the Queen
8) Donna Summer - I Feel Love
9) Elvis Costello - Alison
9-tie) Ramones - Sheena Is A Punkrocker

Despite a tough resistance of Marquee Moon, Heroes take the victory with a large margin, mostly thanks to the successive votes of Chris and Honorio.

Alex D, despite not being "not a big fan of punk" gave Sheena the 4 points it needed to steal the 10th place to By This River (sorry Henrik and pop elton)

Not much difficulties for the top 8, even though Trans-Europe Express has been casted in more ballots (but only finished ranked 18th)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

1. Television - Marquee Moon
2. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
3. The Congos - Heart Of The Congos
4. Suicide - s/t

6. Bob Marley - Exodus
7. Iggy Pop - Lust For Life
8. David Bowie - "Heroes"
9. Wire - Pink Flag
10. Ian Dury - New Boots And Panties!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

I just got the spreadsheet from Nassim and will post it as soon as I get home from work today, but I just can't believe that both my #1 album and my #1 song came 11th. That's not fair!

Despite this...thanks Nassim for all your work again!!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Did we really need ANOTHER Bowie album keeping all those great records out? (Neither Aja nor Eno makes me, like Henrik, very sad.)

I mean, I love Bowie, but I'm calling for a backlash! No Lodger in '79!!!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Eno and Steely Dan have already two albums each in the next round.
But yes a no-lodger vote could be a cool thing...
More reggae ? (dreaming)or is it too rootsy for this very urban and sophisticated population of yours ?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Damn, my prediction of Exodus and Live! not making it came through. Looks like one Bob Marley album in the top 100, and by the skin of its teeth.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

Dennis Wilson - River Song and Brian Eno - By This River were nice surprises for me plus Loleatta Holloway - Hit And Run (12").

No love for the "Rocky" theme (Bill Conti - Gonna Fly Now)?

Yes absolutely, but in '76.

You should know I enjoy my reggae! (See the high Congos placement for '77, Upsetters in '76, Burning Spear in '75, etc.)

However, reggae's peak had passed by 1978, so I think its ship has sailed.

It got 3 points from Harold! Which, off course doesn't say that I'm not completely out of time...so...Ol' Rocky did fight already in 1976 (trying to save myself here Hugh Grant style)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1977

So, the field is open for bitching about your favorite songs not getting enough votes :)
