Hey remember this little contest we had back in the fall of aught 7? I tried searching the forum for my original post but only found more recent messages.
Instructions:
Take a look at the AM 3000 Total Albums List, and list the first section of 10 consecutively ranked albums you haven't listened to completely.
I don't remember how far I got last time, but I noticed I made significant progress on the top 200.
My first gap is 217-226... although two of those albums Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Metallica's Black Album were ubiquitous during my middle school years. I just don't remember ever sitting down and listening to everything on those lengthy records.
How do you guys do? And any really good favorites in my gap that you suggest I listen to right away?
177. Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On
178. The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
179. Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin'
180. Radiohead - In Rainbows
181. Prince and the Revolution - 1999
182. T. Rex - Electric Warrior
183. Cream - Disraeli Gears
184. Elvis Presley - From Elvis in Memphis
185. Run DMC - Raising Hell
186. The Specials - The Specials
275 Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs - 1998
276 Van Halen - Van Halen - 1978
277 Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime - 1984
278 Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs - 1999
279 The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out! - 1966
280 Kraftwerk - Die Mensch Maschine - 1978
281 Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space - 1997
282 Kraftwerk - Autobahn - 1974
283 Talking Heads - Talking Heads: 77 - 1977
284 Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic
However I have listend to half of Spiritualized, Minutemen and Magnetic Fields' albums for the 80s and 90s poll and I guess I will Minutemen completely sooner or later since I did like what I heard.
Wow, Nassim, if you set aside an evening to listen to 277-279, you'll be exhausted with all the variety of sounds you'll hear, but you'll have a fully satisfying musical experience as you listen to 3 unique artists exploring every imaginable side of their creative urges.
Mine's got to be way higher than it was last time.
Last time mine was in the 500's. Let's see where it is now after my buying binge last year.
I actually checked before the last update and it was a few hundred higher, but it looks like the last update brought it back down to the 500s. 550-559.
Which is really, really bad luck because I've heard 9 out of 560-569.
223. Peter Ubu- The Modern Dance
224. Kate Bush- Hounds of Love
225. Suicide- Suicide
226. Metallica- Metallica ("The Black Album")
227. Big Brother and The Holding Company- Cheap Thrills
228. R.E.M.- Out of Time
229. The Replacements- Let It Be
230. Brian Wilson- SMiLE
231. Robert Wyatt- Rock Bottom
232. Nick Drake- Bryter Layter
I probably shouldn't even be posting in this thread, but ... my longest stretch is three albums, and there are only two of those, and the first one is #2672-#2674. (The other one is within the bottom 50.)
Two Talking Heads albums is your gap Moonbeam?!? I have come to find that you have very unique music tastes that are hard to pin down, but I would think there would be some room for Talking Heads in your groovy-eccentric-pop based appreciation. More Songs About Buildings and Food in particular drives with a particular beat-filled energy that isn't always as pronounced on the later stuff.
Of course, David Bynre might be one of those some people can't stand.
Moeboid : Boy in da Corner is one of my personal favourite... but well, I don't think everybody can stand it from start to end. Same for Spiderland.
Try "If you're feeling sinister" instead... nobody dislikes this album !
94 Roxy Music For Your Pleasure 1973 is first album I haven't heard all the way through at least once.
My first streak of 10 in a row is:
529 Talking Heads Stop Making Sense 1984
530 Kraftwerk Computer Welt 1981
531 John Martyn Solid Air 1973
532 Panda Bear Person Pitch 2007
533 Massive Attack Protection 1994
534 Miles Davis Porgy & Bess 1958
535 Elvis Presley Elvis Is Back! 1960
536 Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man 1988
537 Van Morrison It's Too Late To Stop Now 1974
538 Underworld Dubnobasswithmyheadman 1993
424. Randy Newman, Good Old Boys
425. Steely Dan, Can’t Buy a Thrill
426. The Wailers, Burnin’
427. Suede, Suede
428. Cream, Wheels of Fire
429. Burning Spear, Marcus Garvey
430. Bloc Party, Silent Alarm
431. Dire Straits, Dire Straits
432. The Who, Quadrophenia.
433. John Coltrane, My Favorite Things
Once I plug that gap, either by feeding my yen for Britpop (Suede) or for jazz (Trane) the next one down is a long 15-album stretch from 530-544 (that seems like a common dead zone; Greg R. and Rocky R. are both in that neighborhood as well).
186 - The Specials - The Specials
187 - The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
188 - Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box/Second Edition
189 - Bob Marley and The Wailers - Exodus
190 - Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
191 - Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
192 - Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
193 - Janis Joplin - Pearl
194 - The Original Soundtrack - The Harder They Come
195 - The Velvet Underground - Loaded
I have listened to some part of Neon Bible already, but never the whole album. Oh, and I guess I'm not the greatest VU fan of the forum, hehe, although I like the only album I have from them (guess which one it is?).
Jonah, Talking Heads is on the shortlist for me. I actually own and love Speaking in Tongues, and I also quite like Remain in Light. Their 77-79 material is definitely on my radar!
Schleuse I thought you would have listened to The National - Boxer given its praise in this forum ! Try it and Person Pitch and your second gap will be filled (yeah, I know, I always choose the 00s albums)
Seems like I almost doubled my record since Oct. 2007 from 319-328 to now:
603) Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
604) Sonic Youth - EVOL (heard a few songs, not the album)
605) The Doors - Strange Days (same, few songs but not the album)
606) Billie Holiday - Lady In Satin
607) Anita Baker - Rapture
60 Fugazi - Repeater
609) The Slits - Cut
610) OutKast - Aquemini
611) Albert King - Born Under A Bad Sign
612) The Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mountain Flame
Now that I look at my "gap" again:
My first streak of 10 in a row is:
529 Talking Heads Stop Making Sense 1984
530 Kraftwerk Computer Welt 1981
531 John Martyn Solid Air 1973
532 Panda Bear Person Pitch 2007
533 Massive Attack Protection 1994
534 Miles Davis Porgy & Bess 1958
535 Elvis Presley Elvis Is Back! 1960
536 Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man 1988
537 Van Morrison It's Too Late To Stop Now 1974
538 Underworld Dubnobasswithmyheadman 1993
Depending on how you interpret it, it might NOT be my gap. Since I own all the decade Elvis box sets, I've HEARD all the songs from "Elvis is Back!"...not just in a linear fashion. So perhaps my 10 album streak is further down.
Before the update warps the numbers for this game, I wanted to bring it back up to the front for any newbies.
If you haven't played, please take a look at the all time 3000 album list and tell us the first 10-album gap you haven't listened to.
I have been using my existing 10-album gaps as a sort of listening guide through the whole 70s countdown. And I'm proud to say, that as I am typing this, I am listening to 1977 Suicide's self-titled album, which will once and for all remove my gap of shame... #217-227, and bump me down to
#550-560 (with the 70s albums from the Congos and Buzzcocks in this bracket, this gap might be no more very soon)
Technically i should have a rush of blood to the head, i bought it the other day at a goodwill store for 99 cents, but it had parachutes inside the case, which i already have. >

351 James Taylor
Sweet Baby James
1970
352 Bonnie "Prince" Billy
I See a Darkness
1999
353 Talk Talk
Spirit of Eden
1988
This will get a little bit farther once I listen to I See A Darkness (just sitting on my iPod waiting for me to listen) but getting past 250 there are alot of 7-8-9 breaks.
I was surprised I got so far; I had several 8-9 album gaps even in the top 200.
332: Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Collosus
333: Jackson Browne - Late for the Sky
334: ABC - The Lexicon of Love
335: Moby Grape - Moby Grape
336: Randy Newman - 12 Songs
337: Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
338: Bob Dylan - Modern Times
339: Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
340: Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous
341: PJ Harvey - Rid of Me
It's probably going to be a while before I get rid of this gap. I have interest in the Dylan and Davis albums, but I'd probably pursue some of their other albums before those ones. I know absolutely nothing about Sonny Rollins, Moby Grape, Randy Newman, or ABC. Anyone have any recommendations?
417. Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown
418. The Police - Reggatta De Blanc
419. The Notorious B.I.G - Ready to Die
420. Chic - Risque

423. The Police - Outlandos D'Amour
424. Randy Newman - Good Old Boys
425. Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill
426. The Wailers - Burnin'
In the last week I,ve bought the albums ranked 416 and 427 without realising they were part of my only 10+ album gap in the top 500. I may have to do something about that this weekend. After that my next gap is 554-564.
223. Peter Ubu- The Modern Dance
224. Kate Bush- Hounds of Love
225. Suicide- Suicide
226. Metallica- Metallica ("The Black Album")

229. The Replacements- Let It Be
230. Brian Wilson- SMiLE
231. Robert Wyatt- Rock Bottom
232. Nick Drake- Bryter Layter
but now I'm happy to say my fist ten album gap isn't until...

369. Duke Ellington- Ellington at Newport
370. John Cale- Paris 1919
371. Bob Dylan- Desire
372. Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto- Getz/Gilberto
My gap is up a lot higher than I thought it would be probably from the 1970's poll. There are a bunch of 9 in a row, but I have a 12 album gap at 573:584
573-Johnny Burnette-Johnny Burnette and the Rock 'n Roll Trio

Seems like I almost doubled my record since Oct. 2007 from 319-328 to now:
603) Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder

609) The Slits - Cut
610) OutKast - Aquemini
611) Albert King - Born Under A Bad Sign
612) The Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mountain Flame
I got a little further again, 653-666 this time. My first gap is a 14 album gap all of a sudden. After that the next one is 803-813, so I'm kinda interested in filling that first gap. Any recommendations?
Go with "Sea Change" anyway. I don't like any other Beck, but "Sea Change" is in my Top 100. It's really more along the lines of good singer/songwriter or folk (ex. Nick Drake or Elliott Smith) than Beck.
My gap is up a lot higher than I thought it would be probably from the 1970's poll. There are a bunch of 9 in a row, but I have a 12 album gap at 573:584
573-Johnny Burnette-Johnny Burnette and the Rock 'n Roll Trio

583-Woody Guthrie-Dust Bowl Ballads
584-Ella Fitzgerald-Sings the Cole Porter Songbook, Vol. 1
Go out and get Either/Or right now. I cannot fathom why it's so low.
I'm gonna recommend you go hear DUST BOWL BALLADS instead. I'm one of those people who don't really "get" Elliott Smith.
1035. Blondie - Blondie
1036. Jay Z - The Black Album
1037. Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds Of Silence*
1038. LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out
1039. Frank Sinatra - Come Fly With Me

1042. Steve Miller Band - Fly Like An Eagle
1043. Country Joe & The Fish - Electric Music For The Mind And Body
1044. Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar
*I have heard most of Sounds of Silence, just not the last couple tracks, because I wasn't that into it save the title track. I decided not to count it because I haven't heard 1045-1047 either.
This gap is actually a 16-album gap. The next one I heard is 1051 Interpol - Antics.
