Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Charlie Gillett ' book The Sound of the City is fascinating.

It is the story of early rock'n roll and rhythm & blues, but seen from the music industry's point of view, and not only a classical description of the artists.
This approach (in terms of markets, labels, producers)is very perinent : everything suddenly makes sense. The links between the different genres. The near-death of rock & roll after 1958. The pre-rock era.
You suddenly understand how conservative the majors and radio stations were in the US in the '50s, and how unprepared they were to the rise of rock n roll.

The book has an excellent discography in the end, that has to be included (or I think so) in the AM songs list.

The list is long, it is not on the Web, so I'll give it to you year by year.

This could serve as an excellent introduction to pre-1965 music for the PHILLY GAME I guess

So let's start with 1946 (the order is chronological, not of importance)

1. Cecil Gant "I Wonder" (Gilt Edge, 1946) blues
2. Roy Milton "RM Blues" (Specialty, 1946) blues/R&B
3. Ella Mae Morse (with Freddy Slack) "House Of Blue Lights" (Capitol, 1946) pop

4. Charles Brown "Driftin'" (Aladdin, 1946) blues
5.Louis Jordan & His Timpany Five "Choo Choo'Ch Boogie"(Decca, 1946) blues / R&B

6.The Delmore Brothers "Freight Train Boogie"(King, 1946)country

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

in bold : my personal recommendation

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : plylist 1946-71

I can't find Louis Jordan but this is Cecil Gant, with his beautiful ballad, "I Wonder"

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Looks great, nicolas!

The list inludes the author's own recommendations and is not based on the music industry view I assume?

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Nothing in 1947

1948 :

1. The Ravens "Write Me A Letter" (National) doo-wop
2. Wynonie Harris "Good Rockin' Tonight"(King) R&B
3. Sonny Thompson "Long Gone Parts 1&2" (Miracle) R&B
4. The Orioles "It's Too Soon To Know" (Natural) Doo-wop
5. Amos Milburn " Chicken Shack Boogie" (Aladdin) blues

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

No, the list is the author's choice.

Quote : "The reasons for including each record vary, but each of them became a part of the background for anyone making records thereafter."

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

1949 :

1. John Lee Hooker "Boogie Children" (Modern) blues
2. Stick McGhee "Drinkin' Wine Spo-De-O-Dee" (Atlantic) R&B
3. Dinah Washington "Baby Get Lost" (Mercury)
4. Professor Longhair "Mardi Gras in New Orleans" (Atlantic) blues

This is not the 1949, but who cares (except me, of course)

So, instead, Fats

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Well done, Nicolas.

I have read the book and is indispensable. Mr. Gillet was tired of rock in 1971 (I think the last song and that includes its list of essential is "American Pie") and was devoted to the wolrld music.

i've already posted elmore's song before, so I give you Rosco Gordon, a forgotten piano player and singer from Memphis, who was very influential... in Jamaica.
Emphasizing the second beat, he is one of the originators of ska

10. Shirley & Lee - Let The Good Times Roll (Aladdin) r&b

The 1956 version of "Hot In Herre". Indispensable.

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Fantastic, Nicolas. If I defined the pure-pop style as “dumbangelical” before, the music from this thread is absolutely “Nicolesque”.

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

alllriiite, Honorio, looks like we both have to fight it out on Sunday night... (sorry, ot..)

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

I'm rooting for Honorio, sorry Netjade.

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

what?? no cheers from our most beloved footy neighbour?!
ok, deservedly so, stephan... but since one fourth of my mighty mighty gene pool is spanish, I just might stick to that common brand shtick as well and turn myself into an "Erfolgsfan", depending on whoever will win... but besides: too bad that Netherlands and Spain wouldn't've faced each other eitherway in the final.. might've been terrific.

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Luxembourg would have been a new 2004's Greece if only they'd have qualified. Shucks.

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

hätte hätte fahrradkette... sweetie, you got me there... no more subjunctives. as promised before. and before. and before. and before

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Just wait until the World Cup. You'll see.

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

pa-loo-ka n. 1. Sports An incompetent or easily defeated athlete, especially a prizefighter.

Uh-oh-oh!

Louxemburg are the unofficial winners of Euro 2008 anyway.

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Yes, Netjade, I’m waiting anxiously for the Germany - Spain final.
It’s gonna be a great confrontation regardless of the final winner (that anyway it’s gonna be Spain, of course).
I’m not too fond of football, but anyway I’m having a really good time seeing the Spanish team in the Euro Cup (even during the agonic match with Italy that fortunately Spain won at the penalty shoot-out).
Hope that the victories of Spanish team against Italy and Russia were suitable as a revenge for Nicolas, Henrik and Stephan.
And yes, Stephan and Netjade, I missed a semifinal Holland - Spain too.

And what’s that story about your Spanish genes, netjade?

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

the Spanish team is wonderful
Iniesta, Fabregas (why the hell is he only a substitute), Xavi, senna, Ramos...
A real dream team
Spain is somehow my second European country so I'm for Spain since this baaaad French team was out

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

The Sweden-Russia game was really embarrasing. There's always a big media hype before the games that make Swedes believe we're going to be winners, but then we never have a chance and we realize that we are just a small country after all (with limited foot artistery).

Honorio and netjade, good luck to both of you!

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Congratulations Honorio, a deserved win.

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Yes sure
Viva Espana

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Thanks a lot, boys. A match not so brilliant as the one with Russia but the Spanish team deserved winning (they could have made two goals more!). Sorry, netjade, but the last time Spain the Euro Cup won was in 1964!! And Germany won it three times I think, now it was our moment...

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

I guess it was not so brilliant because Germany was a stronger opposition than Russia
But anyway they won, and with style (maybe a little too much, sometimes they're so eager to play a beautiful football that they lack a little realism in front of the goal.)

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

a little belated, but I haven't been online for 28 hours since... so what are 44 years anyway?? ... amazing... finalmente the spanish team delivered all that one gifted generation after the other unavailingly promised so many tournaments before... not only skill, but consistency as well (yes, it is me blinking at Germanyland, Portugal and Holland with that certain phrase in mind)... thus my reverencia is owed to you, Honorio, regardless whatever it will mean in pop music terms in a pop music forum like this...

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Thanks a lot netjade for your reverencia. I enjoyed a lot the stylish yet consistent playing of Spanish team (as Nicolas and you pointed). However I’m not enjoying at all the hyperbolic ravings of the Spanish press and TV. It was predictable, but anyway it seems that instead the Euro Cup we have won the Holy Grail or whatever. Definitely I prefer pop music. No one wins and no one loses. It’s only matter of tastes.

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

... except on Acclaimed Music where we keep on rating and listing music

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

ok let us go back to the initial purpose of this thread, which was not soocer, but music listed by Charlie Gillett and the year 1956 part 2

11. Elvis Presley - Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel (RCA Victor) rnr
12. Bill Doggett – Honky Tonk (King) blues
13. The Five Satins – In the Still of the Night (Stanford/Herald) doo wop
14. Fats Domino – Blueberry Hill (Imperial) r&b
15. Boogaloo & His Gallant Crew – Cops & Robbers / Clothes Line (Crest) r&b
16. Mickey & Silvia – Love is Strange (Groove/RCA) r&b
17. Young Jessie – Mary Lou (Modern) r&b
18. Richard Berry – Louie Louie (Flip)

With all that fuss and ununderstandable revisionism against Elvis, you leave me no choice

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

... except on Acclaimed Music where we keep on rating and listing music

makes me think of a slightly changed Lineker quote: "...and in the end, OK Computer always wins."

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

OK, OK, touché. Here in AM it’s all about winning and losing. But here “winning” is only agreement and not victory, isn’t it?

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

By the way, I’m going to see in a couple of hours the reunited Police playing live. I will tell you later…

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

Nicolas, did you complete this list in another thread?

Re: Charlie Gillett's Sound Of The City : discography 1946-71

No, I didn't. I should do that because it's a great list and it should count for the song 3000
