154. Simon and Garfunkel- America (196
Total points: 165.93
Place in the 2005 poll: 185
Appears on: 4 ballots
Ranked by:
Miguel (12)
Honorio (15)
John (53)
Midaso (162)
Comments:
Honorio: Paul Simon describes the journey of a young couple in a bus trip to “look for America”, travel in which reappears Kathy (Simon’s ex-girlfriend and protagonist of several previous songs). The songs is running with a gentle tone till it takes a restlessness touch (“I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why” understanding the uselessness of the trip cause “they’ve all come to look for America”.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
153. Sufjan Stevens- John Wayne Gacy, Jr. (2005)
Total points: 166.48

Appears on: 5 ballots

Henrik (4)
Honorio (49)
Fred (9
Ozphoenix (104)

Comments:
Honorio: A quite recent song that has climbed directly to my Top 50. Sufjan tells the scary story of John Wayne Gacy, Jr., a famous serial killer that killed “twenty-seven people / even more”. But the most disturbing is the gentle and sweet tone that Sufjan applies to that tremendous story. And its devastating conclusion: “And in my best behaviour / I am really just like him / Look beneath the floorboards / for the secrets I have hid”.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Surprises all the way! And what surprises! The Knife at place 146! You should've let me know and I had included the song in my top 100 (or at least extended my list to 200).
Great to see Sufjan coming up too. I was hoping that it would reach even higher with my 4th place, but I'm happy!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Nice to see some of my favourites, but I've expected Sufjan Stevens one much higher. That song is superb.
Sufjan seems like an artist who might suffer from vote-splitting -- there are several tracks from Illinois, a few more from Michigan, and even a couple things from Seven Swans that I wouldn't be surprised got votes.
JW Gacy always freaks me out -- I grew up in close proximity to where that happened, so it's a little close to home.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a youtube video, or even a stream of the full song! However, I did manage to track down a 30-second preview. If any of you are aware of a link where the full song can be heard, it would be greatly appreciated!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
I can undertsand you, sonofsamiam, but the most disturbing thing about that song is that bizarre mix of repulsion and fascination. If repulsion weights more...
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
greg, once again great spirits meet
Godd to see the poll back, but i gotta go to bed, i'll listen to that tomorrow at work
And France lost against Spain (0-1) (soccer)
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
With your username, I would have guessed you'd be beyond freaking out over that by now!
Ha, good point! My username is actually a reference to obscure early-90s indie popsters Too Much Joy; I always liked the serial killer/children's book dichotomy. Hopefully no one thinks I'm into serial killers because of my user name -- I'll take Sam I Am over Son of Sam anyday!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Sonofsamiam - you have great taste, if I may say so.
Thanks! Those Zombies and Radiohead tracks are mind-blowing. But now I'll ruin my rep with you by saying I never quite got into that New Radicals track, but hey, I never said I was perfect....
Ooh, Station to Station, fantastic! Just missed my 200, but a nifty surprise up there!

Comments:
Honorio: How to survive to the suicide of the writer, singer and leader of the band, Ian Curtis. How to give itself to the hedonism of the dance without losing the mysterious halo of Joy Division. And how to create songs equally moving polished with sumptuous electronic clothes or, like in Frente!’s cover, naked or barely dressed with a simple acoustic guitar.

137. Prince and the Revolution- Let’s Go Crazy (1984)
Total points: 178.99
Place in the 2005 poll: 376
Appears on: 3 ballots
Ranked by:
Rocky Raccoon (1)
Schwah (26)
Moonbeam (43)
Comments:
Rocky Raccoon: From the electric organ and Princely religious psycho-babble sermonizing of the opening to the meaty guitar riff to the explosive climax complete with a stunning guitar lick and thundering drums, this is my favorite song of all time. It's Prince at a most exciting peak.
Moonbeam: Beginning with a drawn out pseudo-sermon backed by an organ, Prince then launches into a crunching rocker that reigns as his most energetic song ever. A motivational call to arms, the lyrics actually portend the end times and urge the listener to seek spiritual treasures. The energy builds until it bleeds into an absolutely blistering guitar solo to end all guitar solos. If “Little Red Corvette” hinted to the masses that Prince could cross over into rock, “Let’s Go Crazy” would knock their socks off, and with good reason. A bit of a silly side note- I used to listen to this song on repeat right before competing in track and field events.
Again, no youtube vid. But the special extended version with a truly warped piano segment can be heard by clicking the image below.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Quick story about "Pyramid Song"...
One of the coolest experiences in recent memory was performing that song with my music professor and his assistant in his office, all the while trying to figure out the time signature (which eluded all three of us.) Wikipedia claims it’s 4/4, but I just can’t hear it.
I will say this though: Thom Yorke has a way of writing songs using strange time signatures, but in a way that still feels comfortable. Now, that's a gift.

Slush (1)
Midaso (10)
Moonbeam (185)

Moonbeam: Leave it to New Order to make the color of someone’s eyes sound like the most important thing in the world. This song is pure ecstasty and led the way to future endeavors such as “Age of Consent” and “Bizarre Love Triangle”.

132. David Bowie- Ashes to Ashes (1980)

Pop Elton (94)
John (124)
Schleuse (150)

Comments:
Honorio: Bowie succeeded with “Ashes to Ashes”, a second part better than the first one, “Space Oddity”, turning the heroic Major Tom into a junkie “strung out in heaven’s high, hitting an all-time low”. In Bowie’s own words: “Ashes to Ashes deals about the dissolution of the big dream that had send Major Tom to space; ten years later everything’s turned bitter because there was no reason to send him there the first time”.

Lonesome Panda (16)

Comments:
Lonesome Panda: I've spent many time wondering if my favourite Funeral song was Power out or Laika… but now it's clear that Wake Up overpass both of them. I don't know many song with such intensity and my favourite music memory is discovering this song live, surrounded by a crowd singing its intro and captivated by this band truly living their song, singing as if they were a single person and as if their life depended of how truly they gave out all their guts... Truly one of the most intense moment of my whole life. My second favourite music memory is seeing them 2 years later, knowing this song and being one of thousands people singing it all together.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
I know this is going to be repetitive, but I'm loving this. You can see how much a single vote makes all the difference. Hopefully this list will play a small role in bringing some hidden classics up to standard top 200 material. I'm not saying anyone's tastes shouldn't change with the times of course.
I was very excited to see Del Shannon, one of the few "oldies" station songs I really like, to make the cut. And World Leader Pretend, which was the lesser known R.E.M. close to my heart.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
I just saw the video Moonbeam put up of Runaway. Is it anyone else's version of heaven to be a pop star playing a totally awesome pop song while gorgeous 60s-era girls circle and bounce around you over and over and over again.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Amazing part of the list !
Some of my personal favorite (Idioteque), some of my 22 bubblind unders (I am the resurrection), some songs which were in my first list but did not make the final cut (Wayne Gacy Jr), some good old classics (Perfect day, the passenger, purple haze...), some recent wonders (Crazy), some revenge on AM3000 list (how the hell can Wake Up not be ranked ?), some interesting discoveries (Heartbeats), some forgotten treasures (Hung Up on a dream), some songs i truly like but often overlook (Bizarre Love Triangle), even a song of which I only know a silly french cover (Runaway, becoming "Vanina" in France)... everything you could expect !
I just have a little fear, won't too many R.E.M. kill R.E.M (same for Radiohead, and probably in a near future for the Beatles) ?
To come back on Sufjan Stevens, yes I think its votes has been splitted, I have voted for 4 of his songs, 2 finishing close to the top 200 (Chicago and Casimir Pulaski Day) and the 2 others a little further.
By the way, would anyone be able to use Henrik methods to make a list of best artists using our albums and songs polls ? (when this one will be totally revealed of course)
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Hey, the term "Just another day at the office" is taking on an entirely different meaning this week: I come in, turn on the computer, and I'm in music heaven. I hope you sleep well, these days, Moonbeam, you did something to deserve it.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Another song among my top 10 (Perfect Day) is out.
There are 6 left. About 2 of them I'm sure they will be in top 10 (maybe in top 3), other 2 ones should do the cut, as well as my #1.
about my #9, i think I'm the only one to love this song so much.
I'm very happy to see that Zombies' "Hung Up On A Dream" made the cut
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
"John Wayne Gacy, Jr." is a masterpiece
I hadn't paid too much attention to it (I've listened to Illinoise maybe 1 or 2 times)
Very beautiful song, simple, clear.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
You are doing an amazing job here, Moonbeam. You're putting in such a bloody effort, but it's well worth it! This is one of the best list experiences ever - and it's made this whole week such a pleasure!
There are soooo many Great songs high up, AMers obviously have the very finest taste in music.
As an Aussie, I'd dearly love to see songs by a few more artists from this part of the world... some more Nick Cave and Triffids... and where are the Go-Betweens? Alas, I fear they may not get a look in this time round...
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Ozphoenix, I regret again not having suceeded in finishing my list. It had Nick Cave's "Red Right Hand" and "Bromptom Oratory" in the top-17-or-so that I made it to. And something off of Born Sandy Devotional might have cropped up further down, althoug to me they're an albums band with few songs standing out from the general feel of the entire song collection on a disc.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
That's a shame, Snusmumrik. I did include "Red Right Hand" on my list - in my opinion Cave's best ever song, so brooding and ominous yet so damn catchy too! Sadly it probably won't find its way into the upper reaches here, but who knows?
And, yeah, that's the problem with the Triffids, their albums do work better as a whole than as pulled apart individual songs - I guess that's why they never succeeded in having hits back in the 80s. I did put few of their more indelible tracks on my list though!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Ozphoenix! I sleep well when it comes to the aussie songs!
In Her Diary by Go-Betweens, The Long Fidelity by Triffids and even Flash & The Pan - Where Were You. Plus the usual Nick Cave songs...Divinyls! check my personal list later on!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
What do you think of "Hey, St. Peter"? I didn't include in my list because I had forgotten about it, but I heard it again yesterday and it's great fun. Probably still wouldn't have made it, but it's close.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
No, Fred, the Saints weren't Kiwis, but were from my hometown of Brisbane, Australia.
The original line up actually got back together late last year for a gig here, kind of as a celebration of 30 years since their debut album I'm Stranded (and the long-gone Brisbane punk scene of the 70s). Unfortunately I missed them, but heard that they still kicked ass.
Why the Saints don't have a bigger following I don't know. They're certainly up there with the best acts of 70s punk.
I put "Just Like Fire Would" from '87 on my list. Great howlin' blues-rock song... They had a new line up by the late 80s and a more mellow sound, but still with that old punk roar...
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Fred, Saints do refer to 'west coast' at opening of "Know Your Product", but don't know if they mean Australia's west coast (namely Perth and the state of Western Australia) or maybe the U.S. west coast???
It rules out Brisbane which is on Australia's east coast.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Just getting caught up with the preceedings now. Moonbeam, reiterating what everybody else has said I'd like to thank you for the great job you are doing and can't wait for the rest.
Ozphoenix, Austrailia is represented by the Go-Betweens, Nick Cave, Hoodoo Gurus and I guess the Easybeats sort of count. The Saints and Midnight Oil were bubbling under.
What do you think of Dappled Cities? I picked up their Granddance LP this past year and like it alot.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
The song "Station To Station" with Bowie is ten minutes long. I seldom play it from the start. A little shorter and with some more variation in the verses etc it would have been even more of a killer IMO.
Some DJ should try to mix it with "Lust For Life"!?
Imagine Bowie not releasing "Station To Station" and instead had the song as the opening track of "Low"!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
The Del Shannon song is a fucking masterpiece too. I had completely forgotten to include it in my top 200, but it could have made it.
For those who don't know "Cortez the Killer" please listen to the album version which is far better than the clip above. This song is wonderful, and the subject is original (The Aztecs) although Neil Young idealizes them as a pure and peaceful civilization which is far from being true (it was indeed a very violent civilization). I read a book about Cortez' conquest and it's an amazing story. I wrote something about that song, it was supposed to be on my second book which was never finished. It was the story of a trip to America, an imaginary trip of course, in search of the roots of music (I have been only once to the US and it was in 1993 in Denver for the catholic World Youth Days to see the pope, it was like a catholic Woodstock)and with a soundtrack.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
of course (don't let me be misunderstood department, as schleuse would say) the conquistadores outdid them in terms of violence. They just burned their city to the ground..
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Next time we make a list there'll be a lot more Neil Young in mine, I only had 2 albums of him and didn't really know a whole lot of songs, but over the last weeks I've discovered dozens of songs and a few very great albums.
I cannot believe I had never heard Rust Never Sleeps, and only a few people had it in their lists.. that albums is so magnificent. Of course I could trust in the man with the great taste to place it high in his list, thank you jonmarck.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
So we have two personal number ones by now (Rocky and Slush).
Other question. I was thinking about instrumental songs. A very small percentage of instrumental songs shows up in music lists, allthough there's a lot of music styles mainly instrumental: classical, jazz or electronica for instance. In our list these are the instrumental tracks so far (that I've detected, there are maybe more):
466 . Bill Evans - Time Remembered
367 . Charles Mingus - Modes D, E, F: Trio & Group Dancers, Single Solos & Group Dance, Group & Solo Dance
367 . Claude Debussy – Nuages
326 . Frank Zappa - Peaches En Regalia
305 . David Axelrod - The Human Abstract
295 . Ahmad Jamal Trio - I Love Music
264 . DJ Shadow - Building Steam with a Grain of Salt
243 . Erik Satie - Gymnopédies No. 1
190. Miles Davis- So What
Must we expect for other instrumental track in the rest of the list? Any guesses?
Me, I prefer vocal tracks too, although I've voted for 18 instrumental tracks out of 250 songs.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
A lot of great songs.
I'm not surprised to see The Knife, but I'm surprised that the Knife song that made it was one from their first album. Those songs are okay, but nothing compared to Silent Shout or We Share Our Mothers Health (Which I voted for).
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
I'm happy Midaso and Moonbeam agree with me that "Temptation" is an awesome song. That was the only song easy for me to rank in my final list. It's such a perfect blend of melancholy and joy that I never find a moment when I don't want to listen to it.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
I was sure that I was gonna forget some huge songs I love in my list... Now I know one of them : "Perfect day". I love that song so much, it's a shame that I forget it !
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
nicolas,
I like your book idea. When I was in college my buddies made a musical pilgrimage to the Grand Old Opry, Graceland, the Mississippi Delta (which was not shining like a National steel guitar), and New Orleans. Big fun.
The highlight was when we decided to go to a crossroads in the Delta at midnight to play blues (and potentially sell our souls to Satan in return for Robert-Johnson-like musical talent). It didn't quite work out that way because, while in search for a suitable crossroads our station wagon became mired in a very deep muddy two-track road through some farmer's cotton field. Somehow we managed to get it unstuck without be shot. I always wondered what the owner of the land would have thought if he had found four Yankees with two guitars stuck in a station wagon stuck in his muddy field.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
You kidding Neo ?
It's great ! I remember a guy in my class lent me this record but the teacher confiscated it and the guy wanted to beat the hell out of me
I was 11
At least something cool from the year 1981
