He's great at picking samples, but he's a mediocre rapper. So a lot of his songs do sound great. But his contribution to his songs represents very little of the actual quality.
Stronger is a good song, not because Kanye wrote a good song, but because Daft Punk wrote a good song.
Gold Digger is a good song, because a blues guy wrote a good song.
listened to umbrella five times on MTV and can´t whistle to it still. So it can´t be a good tune. no melody - no hookline - no lyrics. north american scum.
North American Scum barely has a melody or a hook, and certainly neither of them are remotely catchy. Umbrella mostly consists of drawn out melodic phrases, and combines a great melodic hook with a strong rhythmic hook.
As far as the lyrics, more self-conciously "artistic" does not equal better. Umbrella is a simple statement of solidarity, but it derives much of its power from its simplicity. Scum is Murphy at his self-parodic worst. It sounds like he's trying to make something that sounds like an LCD Soundsystem song which is about the worst way to go about music-making possible. Going from Losing My Edge to Daft Punk... to Scum, talk about diminishing returns! And even Edge is kind of embarrassing at this point He's much better when he's not trying to be funny.
And don't take me as someone who hates LCD, Silver was one of my favorite albums of last year, but Scum is one of the worst things he's ever done. There are better lyrics and melodies and hooks all over the LCD album, and for that matter, the Rihanna album too.
Lost my USB with all the info but found it again, so hope to have it for you by the end of the week.
As for 'Umbrella' it certainly lacks the punch Hey Ya and Crazy had when they topped the polls.
There was no definitive best song that eclipsed others this year. My opinion has varied from 'Jimmy' 'Paper Planes', 'All My Friends' and D.A.N.CE. All quality I'll think you'll agree.
