CHORUS - Les 60 Meilleurs Albums Francophones (1992-2006)
Hi Henrik, this list came out this Summer for the celebration of their 60th issue. They gathered a poll of 20 Critics who were especialised in what we call here "Chanson Francaise". I discovered during my travels around the world that actually a lot of people like this type of music. This list, along with the other one I posted earlier, gives you a pretty neat overview of the main artists in this field. Well, I'm not sure how many will end up on the AM 3000 but for those who'd like to be even more acquainted with French music, you can always come and visit France...

Re: CHORUS - Les 60 Meilleurs Albums Francophones (1992-2006)
Oddly, no Dominique A’s “Auguri” (2001) or Benjamin Biolay’s “Negatif” (2003), two recent masterpieces that could be perfectly be filed under “chanson”. But maybe these two singers are best regarded outside France.
Re: CHORUS - Les 60 Meilleurs Albums Francophones (1992-2006)
you are right Honorio about these 2 artists
they are well-known in France, but Benjamain Biolay is more acclaimed for his talents as a songwriters than for his own works as a performer, which is a pity
For instance, there is "Chambre avec vue " by veteran Henri Salvador, which was written and arranged by Biolay and Keren Ann (his girlfriend at the time)
Manu Chao is deseperatly low and there are no traces of two major acts :
- Dick Annegarn, an ex-folk singer who made a brilliant come back in the 90's and is considered as a huge influence by the "nouvelle chanson française" scene
- Brilliant bands from two cities of Southern France : Marseille and most of all, Toulouse, with the brilliant Fabulous Trobadors who mix rap, folkloric music, brazilian percussions and very innovative (and humorous) lyrics in both French and local dialect; and Zebda
Personnally Annegarn and Fabulous Trobadors (who are on the same excellent label Tôt ou tard) are the best French artists of that period.
they are less "traditional" because they both use influences from foreign countries and cultures, and the French "chanson française" critics are often conservative, nationalists and not ver open to the rest of the world (like, sadly, a lot of French people..)
Re: CHORUS - Les 60 Meilleurs Albums Francophones (1992-2006)
Nicolas, I checked in detail in the issue concerning the other 480 Albums that these 20 writers voted for but couldn't be included in the Top 60. Some Of these Artists had so many good albums that the votes were "split" between all of them. For instance, ZAZIE had no less than 5 Albums in the 480 but none in the Top 60. Concerning the Artists you mention, Dick ANNEGARN and THE FABOLOUS TROUBADOURS had 3 Albums each whereas ZEBDA and Benjamin BIOLAY had only 2; if you are interested in further amusing statistics you can visit this page

Re: CHORUS - Les 60 Meilleurs Albums Francophones (1992-2006)
Oh, and you'll notice that DOMINIQUE A has got 5 Albums nominated in the 480 ones left out from the Top 60...It seems like the writers couldn't decide on one particular album.
Re: CHORUS - Les 60 Meilleurs Albums Francophones (1992-2006)
Merci beaucoup again, Olivier and Nicolas. It’s no surprising that there was no consensus about best Dominique A work. My favourites, even I haven’t heard his entire discography, are: 1º Auguri (2001) 2º “La mémoire neuve” (1995) 3º “L’horizon” (2006).
I like a lot also the Henri Salvador album that you mentioned, Nicolas. The song “Jardin d’hiver” is an absolute délice.
I don’t know the other bands that you mentioned (I’ve only heard a song by Zebda in an Esan Ozenki compliation), but I’ll try to hear something.
Re: CHORUS - Les 60 Meilleurs Albums Francophones (1992-2006)
I particularly advise you les Fabulous Trobadors and their album "duels de tchetche et autres trucs du folklore toulousain", which is really astonishing.
They sing some of their songs in Occitan, local language of the South West of France, which is like Catalan, a mix of French and Castillano
