Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Hello everyone:

People are coming up with great threads for bringing out the music list obsessive in all of us, so I want to throw another idea out there.

iTunes, and hopefully other computer music players, have a Play Count field, that lists how many times an individual track has been played completely. I am a big fan of shuffling my entire playlist when I am at my computer, and have found it very interesting what songs have emerged at the top of my Play Count list. They usually turn out to be hidden gems of songs that I wouldn't normally put on the top of my favorite songs list. Rather than just sounding wonderful, these songs provide something extra, like a little subconscious soundtrack to my mind that fits so well into my non-music tasks of life that I am rarely tempted to fast forward to the next shuffled song. There are also a lot of really good songs you hear on the radio, so the ones that emerge from your personal playlist could be tunes that you wouldn't hear anywhere else, making it a crude indicator of album tracks that deserve attention.

So, if you think I'm silly about this ignore me. Otherwise, if you are a fellow playlist shuffler, I'm interested in the following:

1) The number of songs in your master playlist.
2) The top 10, 20 (even more if necessary) songs on your "Play Count", plus the number of times it has been played.

This list will of course be a combination of chance, music tastes, and music format listening preferences, and of course song length but it's still interesting to me.

If people participate, we can see if you all actually listen to Oasis on a regular basis, instead of just putting them at the top of every 1990s poll list!!! hee hee

Here are mine (out of 2206 songs)...

1. Neutral Milk Hotel - Song Against Sex <14 plays>
2. Raveonettes - Twilight <14 plays>
3. Arctic Monkeys - A Certain Romance <13>
4. The Beach Boys - Here Today <13>
5. Nick Drake - Pink Moon <13>
6. Smashing Pumpkins - Galapogos <13>
7. Squeeze - Hourglass <12>
8. Blondie - Pretty Baby <12>
9. Boy Least Likely To - I'm Glad I Hitched My Apple Wagon to Your Star <12>
10. Deerhoof - You Can See <12>
11. Deerhoof - Siriustar <12>
12. Del Shannon - Hats Off to Larry <12>
13. LCD Soundsystem - Tribulations <12>
14. Massive Attack - Blue Lines <12>
15. Prince - U Got the Look <12>
16. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Man <12>

After 12 plays I get a lot of ties. It's fun to check in on your play counts every few months to see what emerges.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

well unfortunately i'm a huge perfectionist i decuded that i would re-record all of my music as 192kbps mp3's. can i tell the difference? no hahaha. but yeah, the computer sees them as different songs now that they're re-recorded so the play counts have started all over again.

anyways, here's my last.fm playlist.

1 Sigur Rós – Svefn-g-Englar 40
2 My Bloody Valentine – Soon 27
3 Radiohead – Paranoid Android 24
3 Junior Boys – In The Morning 24
5 Four Tet – Hands 23
6 My Bloody Valentine – Only Shallow 22
7 Junior Boys – Teach Me How to Fight 21
8 Mike Oldfield – Tubular Bells, Pt. 1 20
9 Boards of Canada – Dayvan Cowboy 19
10 Meat Puppets – Plateau 18

urgh. how embarassing.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

"7 Junior Boys – Teach Me How to Fight 21"

Love it.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

According to last.fm, these are the songs I played most in the last 3 months:

1. Pulp – Common People - 67
2. Chris de Burgh - The Lady in Red - 66
3. Marianne Faithfull - The Ballad of Lucy Jordan - 52
4. Bob Dylan – Like a Rolling Stone - 33
The Killers – When You Were Young - 31
6. The Rolling Stones – (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - 28
7. The Postal Service – Such Great Heights - 23
8. Regina Spektor – Us - 22
9. T'Pau – China In Your Hand - 19
10. The Fratellis – Chelsea Dagger - 19

Nothing too surprising for me, just the songs I enqueued most.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Does last.fm count a song as played if you just request it?

A cool thing about iTunes Play Count is that it only counts a song as played if you listen to it all the way through... songs you skip don't count.

Admitedly there some songs that are sometimes TOO good to just accept as background playlist noise. I feel like I have to stop whatever I'm doing and give the track proper respect.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Well I only recently got an ipod so not too many songs on it yet(1189) - still a work in progress...
But from the short time I've been using it the most played are:
1)The La's - There She Goes(18)
2)The Stone Roses - Elephant Stone(12)
3)The Cure - Pictures Of You(10)
4)KC & The Sunshine Band - Give It Up(10)
5)The Smiths - Cemetary Gates(9)
6)The Smiths - The Boy With The Thorn In His Side(9)
7)The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out(9)
8)The Pixies - Wave Of Mutilation(8)
9)Radiohead - High And Dry(8)
10)Beach Boys - God Only Knows(8)

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

You have to listen to songs about half-way through before it submits them, shorter songs 2/3rds through.

Needless to say I never skip great songs halfway through. ;)

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

This is really embarassing...

The Beatles, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (12)
Buddy Holly, "Not Fade Away" (10)
New Pornographers, "From Blown Speakers" (10)
Al Green, "Let's Stay Together" (9)
Arctic Monkeys, "I Bet You Look Good From the Dancefloor" (9)
Bob Dylan, "Subterranean Homesick Blues" (9)
Fatboy Slim, "The Rockafeller Skank" (9)
Liz Phair, "Polyester Bride" (9)
Lyle Lovett, "Private Conversation" (9)
Nerf Herder, "Santa Has a Mullet" (9)
Rolling Stones, "Sympathy for the Devil" (9)

There are some good songs on this list, but...

(In my defense, I don't listen to music on my computer very often.)

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Forgot to mention that I have 10292 songs on my comp.

Plus, I wanted to mention that I'm a Blur fan, not an Oasis fan .

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Hey everyone:

Remember this thread I started? Well, it's been exactly three months since I started it. It the tradition of businesses that report every quarter (3 months), I thought I'd check on my play count for my iTunes playlist to see the top songs I've listened to completely and to see if there are any climbers and songs that have that extra special something to make it too perfect to skip.

Please contribute your most played songs (for the first or second time) if you'd like.

1. The Beach Boys - Here Today - 15 plays
1. Neutral Milk Hotel - Song Against Sex - 15 plays
1. The Raveonettes - Twilight - 15 plays
2. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Details of the War - 14 plays
2. Deerhoof - You Can See - 14
2. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - For You - 14
2. Smashing Pumpkins - Galapogos - 14
2. Squeeze - Hourglass - 14
2. The White Stripes - The Same Boy You've Always Known - 14
2. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 14
3. Arctic Monkeys - A Certain Romance - 13 plays
3. The Beach Boys - You Still Believe In Me - 13
3. Beck - The Golden Age - 13
3. Black Angels - First Vietnamese War - 13
3. Boy Least Likely To - I'm Glad I Hitched My Apple Wagon To Your Star - 13
3. The Clash - Clampdown - 13
3. CCS - Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above - 13
3. Del Shannon - Runaway - 13
3. The Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea - 13
3. Frank Zappa - I Ain't Got No Heart - 13
3. Gary Glitter - Rock and Roll Pt. 2 - 13
3. Gary Numan - Observer - 13
3. Nick Drake - Pink Moon - 13
3. Primal Scream - Movin' On Up - 13
3. Prince - U Got the Look - 13
3. The Rolling Stones - Rocks Off - 13
3. The Rolling Stones - Happy - 13
3. The Who - The Seeker
3. X - Your Phone's Off the Hook But Your Not
3. !!! - Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard

Lots of long song titles and title tracks for some reason. Some suprises include the Manfred Man's Earth Band song, the only song by them that I have that I downloaded from an mp3 blog. It's just such a bombastic cheesy 70s rock song, I must just want to hear it when I'm sick of all the nuance that comes with more serious and acclaimed music.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

In news that falls on the opposite end of the spectrum of Henrik's news, my Ipod was stolen from my car a couple of days ago. I figure if anyone understands the pain I feel it will be those on this board. On the bright side, I have everything backed up. It had about 3,300 songs. I remember thinking how cool it would be to have a play count for every CD I own, going back to the time I was 15 and first started listening to cool music. Have I listened to Achtung Baby more than Astral Weeks? Oh well, I guess I'll have to start over now. Oh, and by the way, it would show alot of play counts for Definitely Maybe

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Ooh that sucks. At least it's not like the old days when you get your book of CD's stolen and have to buy them all over again. It's one of the perks of the digital age I guess. But, 250-300 dollars down the drain is still always a bad thing.

I'll vouch for the new Classic being a good buy if you are looking at a new player. I will not vouch for a Zune which I exchanged a week ago to get my new Classic. I can't stand Apple but I finally figured out that there is no comparison to the iPod. The touch and iPhone don't interest me but the Classic is awesome for the sheer amount of space. I still can't fit my entire collection but I don't have to pick and choose what goes with me as much anymore. The sound quality is pretty good and just as good as any other DAP, but still not where it should be.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

That kinda sucks Chris. I can't stand Apple either so I suggest the Sandisk Sansa, cheaper and better.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Very sorry about that Chris. The downside of iPod is that they are so portable and easy to lose or have stolen. My 1st gen iPod broke after 2 years and I have yet to be motivated to get another one.

The same can be said on another level, I guess, regarding CD folders. As much space as they take up, I still like to keep some of my collection in jewel cases, so I have still have some music to enjoy in case my older CDs in folders dissapear.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

I have 8655 tracks on my computer

I don't have an iPod, but a Creative Zen Micro, not a bad machine, with a 8 MB drive.
The statistics : I don't think they are very representative of what I like, because I listen to a lot of new music everyday. i'm currently building my albums top 100 so I play a lot of different records once. I don't listen to my favorite records very often, and I try to go through what I have bought or downloaded recently.
For instance, my last.fm account (quite recent)places Yo La Tengo first, just because i 've been listening twice to the 1997 album that I don't particularly love.
The playcount on my Zen tells me that the more played song was "Let me play with yo yo-yo" by Blind Willie McTell, followed by "Adventures of Pee Pee the sailer" by the Bad Livers and "Sum of Marcie's blues" by dobroist Mike Auldridge, because I had to study those artists for my personal project (a historic compilation).
So it 'll take time for my real favorite artists to come out in the first place, if they ever do one day...

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Midaso, it's eerie, but about half your top 30 are in my top 100 or so played.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

I must have a similar taste to you,Slush - those 3 songs you listed as your favourites, all 3 are among my favourites as well. I'll have to give some of your other stuff there a listen cos chances are,I'll like it too...

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Sorry, can't play along because I'm still in the middle of uploading my collection to my new ipod, the old one having died.

But I do have a question that might as well go here. Is there any way to take a playlist from iTunes and import the information in it to an excel spreadsheet?

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Hey everyone, it's (almost) that time again. I'm posting my quarterly list early, because I'm going off on vacation, for the first time since I got my Master's Degree and started my new busy job in Rockford.

You can all wait until the semi-official date of the 21st of December if you want.

If you are new, every 3 months I like to check on my iTunes playlist and use the Play Count listing to see which tunes have been played completely through the most times. Usually the top 20-30 songs are fine. You can do whatever playlist (last.fm, Rhapsody, etc.) you want. Check out the format of the list below for guidance.

1. Beach Boys - Here Today - 16 plays
1. R.B. Greaves - Take a Letter Maria - 16 plays
1. The Rolling Stones - Rocks Off - 16 plays
1. The Who - Odorono - 16 plays
1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Man - 16 plays
2. Beach Boys - You Still Believe In Me - 15 plays
2. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Details of the War - 15
2. CSS - Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above
2. Gary Numan - Observer
2. The Knife - One Hit
2. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - For You
2. Neutral Milk Hotel - Song Against Sex
2. Prince - U Got the Look
2. The Raveonettes - Twilight
2. Smashing Pumpkins - Galapogos
2. Squeeze - Hourglass
2. The Strokes - You Only Live Once
2. The Strokes - Reptilia
2. The White Stripes - The Same Boy You've Always Known

The biggest under the radar surprise was Take a Letter Maria, by R.B. Greaves, a one-hit wonder that I got through iTunes, just because it was stuck in my head one day and I had to see if I could find it.

The two Strokes tunes are sneaking up there too. I think they are a very good playlist shuffle artist. Their songs just drive forward, sound great, and never wear out their welcome by going too long.

What's going on with your playlists?

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Hey it's that time again to check in on our playlists! I'm really beginning to notice and skip some of the songs that have been played a lot, but a few are still going strong.

See the top for instructions if you are new. But even if you don't have a play count, this can be informal. Let us know what songs have been 'on repeat' (an ironic phrase if you see my list) over the past 3 months.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

The influence of the songs poll can probably be seen, and I dedicate the #1 song to Anthony. What some of the songs are doing in the list, I have no clue though. I didn't even know I had a song by "The Real Thing" on my computer, and the Supremes cover of Mountain High is far from the best.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Is that 728 songs from that album played or did you listen to the whole album 728 times Anthony?

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

I'm assuming the first, but with your Zombies fanaticism you never know.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

There's no way it can be the entire album played that many times...but that's still huge numbers. The highest total of any of my albums is only like 230

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Yeah, I kinda figured that out after I posted it. Still, 728 plays equals listening to that album 60 times. Impressive.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Yeah, the remaining 11 songs from that album are all hovering around the 60-mark.

And I discovered the album early last year, so that's around 5 plays per month, on average. (Hey, that's only like one play per week. When you say it like that, it's not so bad)!

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

60 times 35 minutes = 35 hours, that's less than 1.5 days.

Peanuts!

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

BTW, Jonah, I'm afraid I can't give a real contribution to your thread. I don't have a iPod and rarely play music while online at last.fm.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Hey there! Let's have us a party for the 1-year anniversary of this little playlist thread! One year in Internet time is an eternity, so since I started this I have had 3 cyber-babies and made my way through a couple cyber-mistresses unbeknownst to my cyber-wife.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

I'm seeing some personal favorites (and some guilty pleasures) in the lists posted: Strokes, Wilco, NMH, White Stripes, Band of Horses, and Roxette (guilty!). Nice.

Here's mine:

Most Played Artists (total plays):

The Beatles - 4,247
Radiohead - 1,733
Pearl Jam - 1,602
Oasis - 1,192
Ryan Adams - 1,116
The Smashing Pumpkins - 1,098
Matthew Good Band - 1,045
Coldplay - 953
The Zombies - 909
Death Cab for Cutie - 831

No, that's not a typo -- I've listened to the Beatles 2,620 times over the last three months (an average of 29 plays per day); most of the plays coming from my iPod during work. It's a renewed love affair, what can I say. (twister's Survivor comment on the Beatles was the truest thing I've read on this forum in a while).

Most Played Albums (total plays):

The Zombies – Odessey and Oracle (783)
Sufjan Stevens – Illinois (630)
The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (602)
New Radicals – Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too (532)
Radiohead – Kid A (487)
The Strokes – Is This It (486)
Oasis – (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (430)
Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (41
Radiohead – OK Computer (40
Sam Cooke – Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 (403)

The New Radicals' album sticks out like a sore thumb in that group of acclaimed records, but it's a great one. I'll post my song list later.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

I think it's probably the best album on the list, save for Morning Glory and O&O perhaps. "You Get What You Give" and "Someday We'll Know" are both fantastic songs.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

It's time to look at your playlists everyone!

By the way, Anthony, did you just add up all the artists you played manually? Or does iTunes have a trick that will list the Most Played Artists automatically? After a year and half of this I'm hoping there's some other statistical tricks I can use to present my most-played differently.

MOST PLAYED SONGS:

1. Gary Numan - Observer - 19 plays

-Currently alone at the top, this song is probably becoming the best transitional song ever. It's not an overplayed single like Cars, it's got a solid groove but isn't too intrusive to make you want to get up and dance, and the vocals just sneak in in the last half. Coolest unmemorable song ever.

TIED with 18 plays

2. Deerhoof - You Can See
The Knife - One Hit
Prince - U Got the Look
The Strokes - Alone, Together
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Man

TIED with 17 plays

3. The Association - Windy
The Beach Boys - Here Today
Curtis Mayfield - Pusherman
Del Shannon - Hats Off to Larry
The Hollies - King Midas in Reverse
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - For You
Neutral Milk Hotel - Song Against Sex
The Raveonettes - Twilight
The Rolling Stones - Rocks Off
The Strokes - You Only Live Once
Tommy Roe - Sheila

TIED with 16 plays

4. The Beach Boys - You Still Believe In Me
The Beach Boys - God Only Knows
The Beatles - Dear Prudence
Belle & Sebestian - Me and The Major
Brian Wilson - In Blue Hawaii
The Buzzcocks - Everybody's Happy Nowadays
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Details of the War
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood
The Clash - Clampdown
The Clash - Train in Vain (Stand By Me)
Cream - I Feel Free
CSS - Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above
David Bowie - Sound and Vision
The Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea
Gary Glitter - Rock and Roll, Pt. 2
James Brown - Think (live at the Apollo)
LCD Soundsystem - On Repeat
Minutemen - History Lesson Part II
Naked Eyes - Always Something There to Remind Me
New Order - Your Silent Face
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
R.B. Greaves - Take a Letter Maria
The Rapture - Whoo! Alright Yeah Uh Huh.
The Rolling Stones - Happy
The Slits - FM
Squeeze - Hourglass
The White Stripes - The Same Boy You've Always Known
The Who - Odorono
The Who - The Seeker
X - Your Phone's Off the Hook But You're Not

Not too many fast climbers or surprises this time, although I don't remember The Slits or The Association being that high.

What's hot on your playlists?

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Some very strange songs in my top 20 that I never once enqueued, but the top 10 is fairly representative of what I've been listening to.

Songs:

1) The Tallest Man On Earth - This Wind (16 plays and a really strong contender for both best song of the year and best album for the album it's on)

3) The Pogues - Fairytale of New York (14)
4) Roy Orbison - In Dreams (11)
5) Amy McDonald - This Is The Life (10)
5) Bobby Vinton - Blue Velvet (10)
5) New Radicals - Someday We'll Know (10)
5) The Streets - Blinded By The Lights (10)
10) Vanessa Carlton - Ordinary Day (9)

11) The Beach Boys - Whistle In (8)

11) Eric Clapton - Layla (8)
11) The Who - Live At Leeds (Disc 1) (8)

11) Bob Dylan - Ballad Of A Thin Man (8)

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Wow Stephan, that #1 song. I have never heard of the band, song, or album. And I'm an avid Pitchfork reader! Surely, they couldn't have missed something?!?

I'm excited to find that song and give it a listen.

Dodos' Fools is probably my favorite of the year, but I only have it on Rhapsody, not iTunes.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Cool... the quarterly gathering of music stats nerds.

Most-Played Artists

The Beatles - 5,794
Pearl Jam - 2,162
Radiohead - 2,081
Oasis - 1,905
Ryan Adams - 1,428
The Smashing Pumpkins - 1,408
Matthew Good Band - 1,384
Sigur Ros - 1,333
Coldplay - 1,128
Death Cab For Cutie - 1,080

Most-Played Albums

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois - 924
The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle - 893
New Radicals – Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too - 837
The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - 817
Oasis – (What's the Story) Morning Glory? - 737
The Beatles – Magical Mystery Tour - 610
The Beatles – Revolver - 578
Radiohead – Kid A - 568
The Strokes – Is This It - 564
Pearl Jam – Vs. - 539

***

The usual suspects. "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too" has yet to lose its allure -- I've played the entire album approx. 25 times over the last three months. Pure '90s alt-rock gold. Incidentally, my artist play count for New Radicals is 839. That's 837 plays for the album and one play for each of their b-sides (which are disappointingly awful).

No, I don't add up the plays manually, Jonah, and it's not an iTunes feature either -- LastFm does it. It generates charts based on what's played from my iTunes and iPod, eg. top artists, top songs, top albums. I can even go into the site and refine the charts to show either the overall numbers or just the last three months, or six months, or 12 months. Talk about addictive! It's like crack for music nerds.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Jonah: Pitchfork is actually one of the few sites that DID review it. A 83 or 84 if I recall correctly.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

According to Last.fm:

The Rolling Stones - 571
Radiohead - 570
The Smashing Pumpkins - 563
Rush - 533
Blur - 444
Streetlight Manifesto - 395

Most played songs:
Boston – More Than a Feeling - 97
U2 – One - 86
Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run - 80
The La's – There She Goes - 73
Rush – The Spirit of Radio - 72
The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out - 70
Blue Öyster Cult – (Don't Fear) The Reaper - 69

Bruce Springsteen – Thunder Road - 64
The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight - 61
Rush – Limelight - 57

Nothing really that surprising, although my tastes have changed a lot from the representation on this list (which includes music from a while ago up to now).

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

It's time again for my fun little list thing.

Please provide me with a list of your most played songs, based on any music player that counts how many times a track has been played.

A new dynamic has entered this little exercise in the form of the ITunes new Genius feature, which collects information on your playlist and other playlists that have similar songs, and shoots out a custom made list of 25 songs for any track you select. It's a perfect way to give you some music for a particular mood, especially if you use your playlists to go to sleep and you don't want a Black Flag or NIN song pop up out of nowhere.

The result of this Genius feature, I think, is that some more common songs are becoming clustered around each other, hence more play counts.

Here we go:

FIRST (19 plays each)

Cream - I Feel Free

Gary Numan - Observer

The Knife - One Hit

Nick Drake - Pink Moon

The Strokes - You Only Live Once

Wilco - Kamera

2 - 18 plays each

Arctic Monkeys - A Certain Romance
The Association - Windy
The Beach Boys - I'm Waiting For the Day
The Clash - Clampdown
Curtis Mayfield - Pusherman
Deerhoof - You Can See
Del Shannon - Hats Off to Larry
The Hollies - King Midas in Reverse
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - For You
Prince - U Got The Look
The Strokes - Alone, Together
Television - See No Evil
Tommy Roe - Sheila
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Man

3. 17 Plays

Ace of Base - All That She Wants
The Beach Boys - You Still Believe in Me
The Beach Boys - Here Today
Beck - The Golden Age
Belle and Sebastian - Me and the Major
Belle and Sebastian - Lazy Lane Painter Jane
Big Star - Feel
The Clash - Train in Vain (Stand By Me)
David Bowie - Sound and Vision
Devendra Banhart - Santa Maria De Feira
The Minutemen - History Lesson - Part II
Neutral Milk Hotel - Song Against Sex
Nirvana - All Apologies
Olo - Future Fone
R. B. Greaves - Take a Letter Maria
The Raveonettes - Twilight
The Rolling Stones - Rocks Off
The Rolling Stones - Happy
Talking Heads - The Great Curve
The Who - Odorono

3 years of data, and I'm still basically listening to the same stuff. Everything I've come to like over the past year can barely break into the my top 50.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Top 5 most-played songs (# of plays):

The Beatles - A DAY IN THE LIFE: (146)
New Radicals - YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE: (135)
The Cranberries - LINGER: (133)*
Peter Gabriel - SOLSBURY HILL: (129)
Oasis - CHAMPAGNE SUPERNOVA: (126)

(* wtf )

No LastFm reporting this time. *single tear*

As some of you might've noticed, LastFm has a tendency to scrobble songs twice for a single listen, OR sometimes not scrobble at all, which results in inaccurate listening info/charts. In an effort to remedy this, every few months I create a new account so that my charts are accurate. This latest time, however, LastFm didn't prompt the "import iTunes history" option... which I'm kinda choked about. I've even tried wiping all traces of LastFm from my computer and reinstalling it, but still nothing.

From what I understand, they've modified their software so that any given library history can only be imported once, which makes sense -- if users can import playcounts each time a new account is created, the integrity of the collected data is likely compromised. I get that. But I don't understand it when I've deleted my entire LastFm account (playcounts and all), and it won't let me re-import with a new account. (I wonder how they "know" that a library history has already been imported -- I.P. address??)

At any rate, I'll wait a few months before trying again with a new account. In the meantime, my most-played artists looks something like this (iirc):

The Beatles - ~6,200
Pearl Jam - ~2,400
Radiohead - ~2,300
Oasis - ~2,250
Sigur Ros - ~1,500

Earlier this month, I reached 80,000 total plays (three years of data). And according to my iTunes, I have 33 songs with 100 or more plays. 128 with 75+, and 405 with 50 or more.

And no, I don't listen to the radio. Ever.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

4. My Morning Jacket - Gideon (69)

23. The Knife - Heartbeats (47)
24. Spoon - The Way We Get By (47)
25. The Hold Steady - How a Resurrection Really Feels (46)

Not many changes...oh well.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

It's time for our first playlist check for 2009.

For noobs, every 3 months I take a look at my iTunes 'play count' feature to sort my entire playlist in descending order by number of times the track has been completely played. Often interesting and unexpected songs sneak under the radar.

A very important development happened as I was checking my list this month. I knew this day would come sooner or later. Turns out I had two copies of Big Star's Feel on my iTunes. There are a few tracks that I downloaded or bought individually before finding the whole album to enjoy. For these double copies, two files of the exact same song were being counted. I'm trying to make sure that doesn't happen anymore as load up new songs and find more duplicates.

I'm very sorry to Big Star fans who were hoping that having it at the top of MY PLAYLIST would validate the hipness of their music tastes!

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

I just load my Windows Media Player at work with .WMA (I don't usually use an MP3 player at home, listen to CDs) and I'm firewalled out of Last.fm/Pandora, etc. I also tend to listen to a lot of stuff I'm sampling so my top play counts tend not tbe representative of what my actual favorites are.

So instead I told it to give me a playlist of 4 or 5 star rated songs, then play at random and here's the first 10 to come up:

Pennsylvania- Bloodhound Gang
We Got the Neutron Bomb - The Weirdos
Let Your Troubles Roll By - Carbon Leaf
All About Love - Steven Curtis Chapman
Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
Old Enough to Know (live) - Michael W. Smith
The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel - Grandmaster Flash
Kids in America - Kim Wilde
Grow Up and Blow Away - Metric
Get Right or Get Left - Farrell and Farrell

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

OK, WELCOME TO THE SECOND QUARTER PLAYLIST COUNT CHECK

ANOTHER DEVELOPMENT MIGHT ALTER MY NUMBERS THIS TIME AROUND, SINCE I RECENTLY JOINED the iPod world again, this time with a little iPod shuffle. When you replug it into your computer, it updates the playlists, but I suspect that it might count anything on your iPod that was played, even if I skipped over it. A couple songs really shot up this time around, and it could be attributed to that. Oh well just another piece to add to playlist shuffle chaos.

TOTAL SONGS: 4,736

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

I just load my Windows Media Player at work with .WMA (I don't usually use an MP3 player at home, listen to CDs) and I'm firewalled out of Last.fm/Pandora, etc. I also tend to listen to a lot of stuff I'm sampling so my top play counts tend not tbe representative of what my actual favorites are.

OK here's my top plays right now:
Undertaker - T.I. (13)
Stand Up Guy - T.I. (9)
7 plays
Blow Out - North Mississippi All Stars
Mizzip - North Mississippi All Stars
Pennsylvania - Bloodhound Gang

Jethro Tull came out of nowhere... I don't particular like that song but it must show up on a lot of Genius playlists given that it's related to some of the classic rock I like. It's nice that Beck is getting more company, and it's great that New Age might climb up over the months.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Well, I think my tastes run fairly mainstream, but here goes.

Out of 1444 songs, play counts last reset in August 2008

1. Jason Mraz - I'm Yours (76)
2. Yael Naim - New Soul (74)
3. Eric Clapton - Promises (64)
4. Blues Traveler - Hook (59)

It's weird, for someone who prides himself as an 80s music buff, there are only 2 80s songs in my top 20.

I bought a new laptop last summer, so this is the play counts from 1 year. A total of 26,040 songs. I am listing all that had at least 100 plays:

Diane, I call bullshit. 333 songs at an underestimated average of even 120 plays...

= 40,000 plays/year
= 100+ plays per day

1.3% of the library representing this many plays?

I. don't. think. so.

I see your point, so let me put this into context. For the past year I've been working out of my home office with the iPod or computer hooked into the stereo for 8-10 hours a day 3-5 days a week. Plus my car and when I exercise. My iTunes gets alot of usage with a ton of playlists depending on what I feel like listening to that day.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

Slick

Jack Johnson - Flake (181)
Prince - Raspberry Beret (125)

Great list! "Flake" is awesome! And I love Raspberry Beret...

Saw you had several Belinda Carlisle songs...ever listen to "Summer Rain"?

I get the Twin Peaks reference

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

A shameless way to refresh my unpopular thread!

What obscure song is currently tied for most played track on my iTunes with Big Star's Feel.

Raveonettes "Twilight"

You like this song? It seems to borrow some sounds from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and the 00s all in one song.

Re: Fun with Playlists and Play Counts

22 Plays:
This Charming Man, The Smiths (21 of those since it appeared in Bracketology)
16 Plays:
Eleanor Rigby, The Beatles
13 Plays:
Strawberry Fields Forever, The Beatles
Hound Dog, Elvis Presley
12 Plays:
Walk This Way, Aerosmith
School's Out, Alice Cooper
Hotel California, Eagles
Waterloo Sunset, The Kinks
11 Plays:
Johnny B. Goode, Chuck Berry

All Along the Watchtower, Jimi Hendrix
Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana
Gimme Shelter, The Rolling Stones

Of the 26, 24 are on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (Original) List.
The reason they get so many plays is because I have them in a playlist that I listen to every day before I go to school.
