Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

It’s time to begin the nomination process for the 3rd installment of Best Moderately Acclaimed Album (henceforth “MA3”)!

Traditionally, Best Moderately Acclaimed Album is a voting game where only albums ranked under 500 and bubblers are eligible.
This time through, we are also allowing a maximum of one “non-bubbling” album (i.e.- completely “unacclaimed” on AM) per nominator.

There will be a single elimination draw with 128 albums, and now it's time to pick them.

Send me an ordered list of ten nominations at ModAcc3@aol.com. Please include the artist name and album name as they appear on AM, as well as the rank.

You have until midnight ET on Sunday, January 8th to make nominations.

I will select nominations as follows:
First I will go through and pick all the first place albums
Then, I will go through and pick all the second place albums
Then, the third place albums, etc, until the draw fills up.

No more than 25 will be picked ranked 1000 or higher, no more than 50 ranked 1500 or higher, no more than 75 ranked 2000 or higher, and no more than 100 ranked 2500 or higher, so make sure you spread your picks out through the entire list. If after the month the draw is not filled, there'll be a first come-first serve round posted on the forum.

Additional rules:
- No one person can nominate more than one album by the same artist.
- No albums that qualified for the second Moderate game are eligible.
- No albums that qualified for the first Moderate game are eligible, except those that were eliminated in Round 1.

We had been toying with the idea of a “top artist” restriction as well, but I think (with my first pass at least) we’ll resume using a full array of artists.

To give people time to listen to as many of the albums as they have time for, the actual voting won't start until March.

Here's a list of the albums, ranked under 500, that are ineligible per the above stated restrictions:

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Sent mine.

Didn't Bright Phoebus used to be on the AM list, somewhere around the 2300's? Apparently it's not even Bubbling now.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Are you setting quotas for sections of the list like with the last poll (i.e. how many albums from the 500-600 zone, etc.?)

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Listyguy
Are you setting quotas for sections of the list like with the last poll (i.e. how many albums from the 500-600 zone, etc.?)
Yes, the "quotas" are implicit in the instructions above, in the form of maximums per tier. Put another way:
Rank 501 - 1000 = 25 albums max
Rank 501 - 1500 = 50 albums max
Rank 501 - 2000 = 75 albums max
Rank 501 - 2500 = 100 albums max
... which leaves AT LEAST 28 spots for 2501+ albums, bubbling albums and unranked albums.

Over the weekend, I collected 5 lists (including my own), from:
BillAdama
Evan
Nassim
Stephan
Brad

... all excellent!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

One more thing, is there a 'no albums from 2010-2011' rule? If we're allowing albums from years that aren't on AM yet, we should set down 'AM rank equivalencies' from year end or megacritic lists.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

I don't know if I am allowed to ask this, but I'll shoot anyway:

How many nominators were sending a list last time?
How many nominators do you expect this time around?

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

I think it was 19 last time. I don't know how many it will be this time, but usually more people nominate than vote.

I've gone through the 7 lists I've received so far and no-one has submitted a nomination for a 2010 or 2011 album, so I'm gonna go ahead and make that restriction: no albums from 2010-2012 are eligible.

So far, I have lists from:
Brad
BillAdama
Evan
Nassim
Stephan
Henrik
Listyguy

Thanks!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Wanted to pop this back up to the top since I've received no new lists in the past week.

Still almost a month until the draw is chosen, but don't let this opportunity to champion your underdogs pass you by!

Thanks!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

I just post my list.
Thanks.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Romain
I just post my list.
Thanks.
Got it... thanks Romain!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Two more lists over the past week brings us up to 9 total, from:

Brad
BillAdama
Evan
Nassim
Stephan
Henrik
Listyguy
Romain
Gillingham

Still need several more... send in your noms, folks!
Jan. 8 deadline.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

This week, only beefsupreme joined the ranks of nominators, bringing us up to 10 total lists - still a bit short of the minimum we need to get the contest rolling.

Two more weeks to get your noms in - hopefully some of you are waiting to absorb your audio gifts from the Holidays before getting your list in.

If I need to extend the deadline, I will.
Enjoy Your Holidays!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Come on MB, not enough synth-pop in the game yet.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

I want to vote, but I'm a little confused about how many albums I am supposed to vote for, how I rank them, etc...

Just tell me if I'm correct about these things:

You can't vote for any of the albums listed in the OP
My first pick is automatically included in the draw

What I am confused about the total amount of albums I am supposed to nominate. I select 25 albums between 500-1000, then another 25 for 1000-1500, so on and so forth?

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Much easier than that, VF... rank 10 albums in order of preference that are not on the list above and are not in the AM Top 500. Send them in order along with their actual ranking (if any) to the email above.

Yes, your first choice will definitely get in. In fact, I'm sure several from every list will get in (there are 128 spots open, after all - and bound to be some duplicates!)

I don't think I'm giving too much away by confirming this statement!

All you have to do is pick 10 albums.

All that about 25-25-25-25 describes how Brad will select the albums that get in. (So, if you picked nothing but albums in 501-1000 range, odds are only two or three would get in)

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

I received three more fantastic lists over the past week from beefsupreme, Henry, and VanillaFire.

We now have 12!:
Brad
BillAdama
Evan
Nassim
Stephan
Henrik
Listyguy
Romain
Gillingham
Beefsupreme
Henry
VanillaFire

Between these lists, there are 115 nominated albums. Obviously, we need at least two more (more likely 3 or 4 to account for segment requirements).

If we don't have the minimum by next week, I will extend the deadline by a week.

Thanks!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

One nomination list from Michel brings us up to 13 total.

From these 13 nominations, I am only able to fill a maximum of 117 spots out of the 128 necessary for the poll to begin. We need at least two more nomination lists.

For this reason, I am extending the deadline to next Sunday 1/15. I will continue to extend the deadline weekly until I am able to fill out a complete bracket.

So there's still time left... Come join the fun!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Just sent in mine!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Assuming kingoftonga makes it 127; if one of my nominations is a double nomination, I'd be more than willing to replace it with another one to get to 128.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Got yours kingoftonga - now we have 14 nomination lists.

The maximum slot total is now at 123.

Thanks for the offer Stephan- interestingly, you do have one of the duplicates.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

sending mine a little later today

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Great Greg... Antonius, I got yours, bringing us to 15 noms (Greg will be 16).

We're at 126 maximum slots now, and I anticipate the next list pushing us to goal. Still, I would like to keep this open through this week (as mentioned previously) to pick up any stragglers. The more the better!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Greg - Did you ever get to send your list? I still need at least one more by Sunday midnight EST (or thereabouts).

Everyone - This could be your last chance! Send your nominations!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

If we don't meet the 128 album requirement we can always just have everybody send one more nomination and pick randomly among them.

Or give first priority to anyone who didn't get all 10 picks in due to AM rank quotas.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Greg came through in the clutch!

The nomination period has thus ended with a total of 15 lists, from the following participants:

Brad
BillAdama
Evan
Nassim
Stephan
Henrik
Listyguy
Romain
Gillingham
Beefsupreme
Henry
VanillaFire
Michel
KingofTonga
Greg

I will put together the draw today and reveal it no later than tomorrow (Tuesday). We should be able to stay on schedule with the kickoff date in early March (exact date tbd) which will give everyone a month and a half to kick-start their finding & listening.

Thanks everyone- I'm really looking forward to this... great lists w/ lots of variety!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

sorry - 16 total, including Antonius

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

That's a pretty great list!

What order are we playing these in (i.e. what will the first week look like)? Game 1, 17, 33 and 49?

You got it!

Here's a great first round matchup: New Amerykah Part One vs. Amerikkka's Most Wanted!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Great list of albums. I mean, this is an EXCELLENT list. Great variety too. A little upset my Cowboy Junkies nomination didn't make the cut though.

If I recall correctly, that's the only one of yours that missed the cut... there's always next year!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Also I can't see any obvious favorites. I mean, there are some that obviously have better chance than others, but there's no 'Summerteeth' or 'Seventeen Seconds' or 'Aeroplane'.

Technically wasn't it against the rules for the same person to nominate two albums by the same artist? I'm okay with it if everyone else is, but I just wanted to point it out. (Romain, Serge Gainsbourg)

Good call- I completely missed that. I'd like to let it slide if no-one objects, primarily because it would upset the seedings to a greater extent than I think it's worth. Sorry about that one!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Only four albums were nominated by more than more than one person (I nominated three of these four albums). However, with their low AM rankings they could probably not be considered favorites.

Astor Piazzolla - Tango: Zero Hour - 1242
Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank - BU
Low - I Could Live in Hope - 2073
Muddy Waters - Folk Singer - 1265

Great selections, Antonius, Stephan and Gillingham!

I'm really sorry. I don't see this point.
Maybe you can replace One of the two Gainsbourg by the last album of me who doesn't make the list.
Maybe you can replace S. Gainsbourg - Aux armes et caetera by Prince - Around the world in a day ?

The Prince album was the only one of yours that didn't make the cut. Unfortunately, by the time it came up, the ranking < 1501 slots had all been filled, so I moved to the next one on your list. No big deal - we all love Serge. Besides, three bracket predictions are already in - we're all set!

Great list of albums. I mean, this is an EXCELLENT list. Great variety too.
I agree! It would be logical with some loss in quality since the last games as the best albums are no longer eligible, but I almost feel the opposite. It shows the amazing park of albums there is to pick from. I really look forward to this game.

That was the first album to NOT get in due to the 501-1000 range filling up!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Beside my pick, my favorite in the list of the albums that did not make the cut is Four Tet - Rounds, great electronic album.
And it seems that there is at least one album that Henry and I both love

is the same album as: Lee Perry - Super Ape - 1035 - beefsupreme

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

I like that every full bracket filled out now has a different winner, unlike the last one I remember: everyone picked Areoplane.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

Last year 6/10 picked Summerteeth, and Seventeen Seconds won. (Which would have been my second guess).

I do love how there's no obvious favorite this year.

I've only heard 43/128. I'm glad this doesn't start until March.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

66/128 for me (although I had 61 before this was announced), so just over half of them. I hope to get to at least around 90 before this starts.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

So far, 6 folks have entered their completed draft predictions, with 6 different winners! Two others have theirs "in progress".

Still plenty of time to enter your own! No prize is promised, but at least you can have bragging rights!

Yeah, it is. The Upsetters are producer Lee Perry's houseband. The (very good) album was credited to The Upsetters though, so you should probably change that in the bracketmaker thing Brad!

Done - thanks guys!
AND - the 7th predicted winner is our first repeat!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed 3 - Nominations

We're about a month away from kicking this thing off, so plenty of time to get your predictions in.

So far we have 8 completed prediction brackets (with only one repeat winner!), plus 2 more in progress (Listyguy, BillAdama) and another m.i.a. (antonius? any luck putting yours on-line?).

Yeah, I know- it's showing up in the leaderboard as "Not Finished" (as is Listyguy's).
Antonius- my mistake, i didn't realize I had to go to the next page... you're now in there twice, but no problem! Thanks!

There are two Chrises on the list now. Mine is the one with Boards of Canada as the winner. I may change mine right before the deadline when I've listened to more of the albums (Though I'm only up to week 4 now :( ).

I don't know if the second one is one where I accidentally clicked created a bracket and didn't save it, I don't think that's me.

Gotcha - I thought the second one was you based on the "AMModerate" email address. No problem - glad we're getting participation... and you're ahead of me with the listening, but I'm working on it!
