Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

The book "1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die - And 10,001 You Must Download" (that JR has painstakingly written down for me) excludes instrumental songs, so all instrumentals should be blanked in my spreadsheet. This is quite important since the songs that aren't on this extensive list will probably have a significant drop in the AM list, so to be fair to the instrumental tracks they need to be identified and blanked.

Anyone here who would like to identify the instrumentals? Perhaps save a copy of the AM home page spreadsheet, sort by artist and mark the instrumental songs (including the bubbling unders!) and send the spreadsheet to me.

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

Would John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme, Part 1: Acknowledgement" be considered an instrumental?

That's a very good question. I'm not sure.

The book actually includes one Coltrane song, "India", and that one is purely instrumental, isn't it? It seems like they cheated a bit...

Yeah, at least all 4 versions on The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings are. It's tricky, but I do think jazz songs should be classified as instrumental, if only because they're underrated already.

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

Don't know if anyone is working on this, but here's the instrumentals I identified from the top 500 songs. Hopefully I didn't miss any, but you never know.

Booker T. and the M.G.s - Green Onions
Link Wray - Rumble
Louis Armstrong - West End Blues
The Shadows - Apache
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme Part 1: Acknowledgement (maybe)

The following two songs have no discernible lyrics, but they do have vocals, so I'm not sure if they qualify as "instrumentals."
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker
Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown

I'll keep going through the list if I get more time.

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

Thanks Kingoftonga!

Of the songs you mentioned, Green Onions is actually listed in the book, but none of the others.

It seems like they did include a few instrumentals, but they still have a huge advantage against vocal songs and should therfore still be blanked.

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

First off, I missed one instrumental from the top 500, which is:

Daft Punk - Da Funk

Here are the instrumentals I found in the 500-1000 range.

Rhythm is Rhythm - Strings of Life
Duke Ellington - Take the "A" Train
Miles Davis - So What
The Tornadoes - Telstar
Phuture - Acid Tracks
Orbital - Chime
Duane Eddy - Rebel Rouser
The Meters - Cissy Strut
Glen Miller - In the Mood
George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue
Duke Ellington - Mood Indigo
Benny Goodman - Sing, Sing, Sing
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five

Finally, here are the tracks from the 500-1000 range that might be considered "instrumental," although they all have some vocals in them:

808 State - Pacific State
DJ Shadow - Midnight in a Perfect World
A Guy Named Gerald - Voodoo Ray
The Surfaris - Wipe Out (All instrumental, except for the famous beginning)

More later! Hopefully I didn't overlook any in this batch, but it's entirely possible.

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

Thanks Kingoftonga!

In this batch, these were included:
The Tornadoes - Telstar
The Meters - Cissy Strut
808 State - Pacific State
The Surfaris - Wipe Out

This may sound as if instrumental songs aren't excluded at all, but the list includes 10,001 songs in total and almost every vocal track in the AM top 1000 is on the list.

I wish they stuck to their rule, if they needed to have one.

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

Here's the definite instrumentals I found from songs 1000-1500:

Terry Riley - "In C"
Little Walter - "Juke"
Count Basie - "One O'Clock Jump"
Jimi Hendrix - "Star Spangled Banner"
John Coltrane - "My Favorite Things"
The Chantays - "Pipeline"
The Incredible Bongo Band - "Apache"
Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five - "Caldonia"
Lindstrom - "I Feel Space"
Eck Robertson - "Sally Gooden"
Mr. Oizo - "Flat Beat"
Miles Davis - "Ssh/Peaceful"
Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs - "Foggy Mountain Breakdown"
DJ Mujeva - "Township Funk"
John Barry Orchestra - "James Bond Theme"
Weather Report - "Birdland"
Jimmy Forrest - "Night Train"

Then there's some questionable ones:

The Future Sound of London - "Papua New Guinea" (Vocals, but no lyrics)
The Champs - "Tequila" (One word)
Joy Orbison - "Hyph Mngo" (Vocals, but no discernible lyrics)
Dick Dale - "Let's Go Trippin' " (One lyric at the very beginning)

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

A really good job, Kingoftonga! The only song that is on the list in the last batch is Caldonia, which I think is a vocal track. Maybe you listened to an instrumental version?

"Caldonia" is definitely a vocal track. "Caldonia! Caldonia! What makes your big head so hard?"

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

Yeah, my bad. I've been listening to those songs I'm unfamiliar with on YouTube, but I must have dug up an instrumental version by accident. Thanks for keeping me honest. :)

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

First of all, I missed at least one song last time. The instrumentals from 1000-1500 should also include:

"What Time Is Love?" - KLF

Moving on, here's the ones I identified from songs 1500-2000. I'll keep trying to double-check my own work, but there's always the chance I'm missing some.

"Moonlight Serenade" - Glenn Miller
"Rez" - Underworld
"4:33" - John Cage
"Begin the Beguine" - Artie Shaw
"In A Sentimental Mood" - Duke Ellington
"Tiger Rag" - The Original Dixieland Jazz Band
"Smokebelch II" - The Sabres of Paradise
"Miserlou" - Dick Dale
"Un Poco Loco" - Bud Powell
"April in Paris" - Count Basie
"Interstellar Overdrive" - Pink Floyd
"Beau mot plage" - Isolee

And here's some with minimal lyrics:
"Energy Flash" - Joey Beltram
"Manteca" - Dizzy Gillespie
"Higher State of Consciousness" - Josh Wink

Thanks again, Kingoftonga! But "What Time Is Love?" is not an instrumental. You must have mixed it up with something else. Also, it's funny to call "4:33" an instrumental, but for this particular purpose it belongs on the list.

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

Ah, perhaps I was thinking of another KLF song? I do my best to cue up songs that I'm not sure about, but I don't have time to relisten to everything, unfortunately. That being said, here's my survey of songs 2000 through 2500:

Aphex Twin - Didgeredoo
Azzido da Bass - Dooms Night
Charlie Christian with the Benny Goodman Orchestra - Solo Flight
Royksopp - Eple
Alter Ego - Rocker
Ramsey Lewis Trio - The In Crowd
Angelo Badalamenti - Twin Peaks Theme
Scott Joplin - The Entertainer
Faze Action - In the Trees
The Chemical Brothers - The Private Psychedelic Reel

Not Sure:
Orbital - The Box (apparently some versions have lyrics and others don't)

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

Still slowly going through when I get a chance, although someone should probably double-check my work. Here's the instrumentals from 2500-3000. I'll try to tackle the bubblers next

"Djed" - Tortoise
"On" - Aphex Twin
"Lester Leaps In" - Count Basie's Kansas City Seven
"Handful of Keys" - Fats Waller
"A Love Supreme: Part 3, Pursuance & Part 4, Psalm" - John Coltrane
"The Koln Concert, Part 1" - Keith Jarrett
"Summertime" - Sydney Bechet
"Track C - Group Dancers" - Charles Mingus
"In a Mist" - Bix Belderbecke
"I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" - Tommy Dorsey
"Pan-American Blues" - DeFord Bailey
"Surf Solar" - Fuck Buttons
"A Night In Tunisia" - Dizzy Gillespie

"Chemical Beats" - Dust Brothers (?)
"High Noon" - DJ Shadow (?)

Re: Need help to identify instrumental songs on AM

Does Average White Band - "Pick up the Pieces" count as an instrumental as well? It essential is, besides them shouting the title a couple times.
