AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Welcome to the first round of the AM Foreign World Cup. You're welcome to participate in this game whether you're a foreign music veteran, someone who doesn't know the difference between Africa and Asia, or anyone in between, but in this nomination round we'll most likely see the biggest participation from the veterans.

We will nominate 16 songs from 16 regions across the world, and everyone can nominate 1 song from each region in this first nomination round. The main rules for song nomination: No anglophone records (excluding pidgin English), no songs from albums with more than 1000 votes on RYM, no songs from artists in the top 500 on AM, and no songs listed on AM. And of course they probably should be your favorite songs from the regions. You do not have to nominate a song from every region, a nomination for a single region is welcome too!

The regions are as follows:

1. Africa:
1.1 Northern Africa/Middle East (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Israel/Palestine, Lebannon, Syria, Turkey, Cyprus, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, UAE, Barhain, Iran)
1.2 Western Africa (Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Gambia, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Sierra leone, Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Niger, Burkina Faso and Nigeria)
1.3 Central/Eastern Africa (Chad, Republic of Centrafrica, South Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Tanzania, Seychelles, Uganda, RDC, Congo, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda, Burundi)
1.4 Southern Africa (Angola, Bostwana, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland).

2. America:
2.1 Brazilian
2.2 Caribbean
2.3 Northern America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Native American, Nicaragua, Panama)
2.4 Southern America (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Suriname, Venezuela)

3. Asia:
3.1 East Asian (Japan, Korea, China, and Vietnam)
3.2 South Asian (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, other -stans)
3.3 Southeast Asian (Burma, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, East Timor, Laos, Singapore and Brunei)
3.4 Australia/New Zealand/Pacific Islands/Polynesia

4. Europe:
4.1 Northern European (Scandinavia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Iceland, Greenland)
4.2 Eastern European (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Armenia, Azerbaidjan, Georgia, etc.)
4.3 Western European (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland)
4.4 Southern European (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece)

Please submit your lists as follows:

Code:
Region code - Artist - Song
For example: 2.1 - Jorge Ben - Errare Humanum Est

I will not set a deadline for this yet, but please let me know if you intend to vote so I can make a decision on when to proceed to round 2. Also, feel free to make recommendations in this thread. If you nominate one artist from a relatively unknown region but really love another, perhaps you can convince one of the people who knows less about that region to vote for your song.

I think that covers everything, but if you have any questions, suggestions or addendum, don't hesitate to ask. Happy travels!

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

For the people with a lot of time I would like to ask the experts to also nominate unknown albums from the regions, of which we need two per region. Please keep in mind that your nomination will make up half of the albums representing that region, so please only make nominations in this competition if you really have a lot of knowledge about the region.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Count me in

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Stephan

You forgot Central America from Panama to Mexico. Is that Northern Latin ?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

My bad, updated! I figured I'd just cut it off at Panama; no other division makes much sense. Is there any native American music scene? If so, we can include them with the northern section.

Edit: Seems like there is, so I've edited things a little to include it.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Thank you Stephan for this great game...I hope you can find enough gamer who know music of the world.

All in the recommendation thread

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Great to see Ruben Blades, Exuma, and Fabrizio de Andre show up already, although I do have to make some new choices now; going to try to spread the artists a little.

Nicolas, I will probably nominate an Anouar Brahem song for his region, just haven't decided which one yet.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Hey, Anouar Brahem is my favorite!

Like Nicolas, my pick would be "Vague". It was first released in 1995 though, on the album "Khomsa".

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Wait a minute, so instrumental tracks are allowed?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Yeah, if they're from any of the countries mentioned above (i.e. no American or British instrumentals).

Oh, and feel free to nominate Anouar Brahem! I can find another artist.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

But a song in English by a Swedish group isn't eligible, is it?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Correct, it is not.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

A few nominations I'm pretty sure about, focusing mostly on folk music (my expertise if I had one):

1.1 - Anouar Brahem - Vague / E la Nave Va (Tunesia) - Consider me convinced.
1.2 - Fela Kuti - Roforofo Fight (Nigeria) - Gotta get one Fela song in.
1.3 - Mahmoud Ahmed - Ere Mela Mela (Ethiopia)
1.4 - ?

2.1 - Jorge Ben - Zumbi (Brazil) - Hard to pick one Jorge Ben song, but this is my favorite.
2.2 - Silvio Rodríguez - Ojalá (Cuba) - I prefer Óleo de mujer con sombrero but this one is more famous.
2.3 - ?
2.4 - Violeta Parra - Gracias a la Vida (Chile)

3.1 - Japanese Koto Orchestra - Otone No Nagare Ni Sote (Japan) - A bit on the long side, but damn good.
3.2 - Ravi Shankar - Rāga Simhendra-Madhyamam (India)
3.3 - Various Artists - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain) (Indonesia) - I'll be the first to admit that I have no idea what's going on here, but it's rather enchanting.
3.4 - ?

4.1 - Maria Kalaniemi & Aldargaz - Sofias Flykt (Finland)
4.2 - Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares - Pritouritze Planinata (Bulgaria)
4.3 - Boudewijn de Groot - Testament (The Netherlands) - Easily the best artist from my country, with his best song.
4.4 - Θανάσης Παπακωνσταντίνου - Α. Μάνθος (Greece)

Open to suggestions on the question marks.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Great list Miguel. One thing though, Sigur Ros is not eligible due to being a top 500 AM artist.

UNELIGIBLE ARTISTS/RELEASES

Here is an incomplete list of artists, albums and songs that are uneligible for nomination. They are sorted by region.
First, artists from the AM top 500, then albums with more than 1000 RYM votes, and last songs from the AM 3000. I haven't included the bubbling under (I assume bubbling unders are OK, are they, Stephan ?)
Please read it in hierarchical order (artists>albums>songs): if for instance Sege Gainsbourg is uneligible, his albums and songs are not mentionned in the album and song sections.
I hope I didn't forget major names/releases. I've checked AM 3000 and RYM 1000. There are probably many metal from Scandinavia I've forgotten but if you want to include one please check on RYM

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Stephan
Great list Miguel. One thing though, Sigur Ros is not eligible due to being a top 500 AM artist.

Sorry, Stephan. You are right. Here is my new election:

4.1 – Ólöf Arnalds – Innundir Skinni – 2010 (Iceland) youtube youtube (live)

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Please, Stephan, hold on the deadline till Sunday at least, I want to post a list but I won’t be able till the weekend, my computer broke down (again), I'm writing from work.
And the selection is getting harder and harder because some of my initial choices (Blades, Raha, Makeba, Ahmed, de André) got some votes and others (Khaled’s “Didi”) are not eligible. But I will post a list anyway, please wait for me.
I just want to make a reservation (before anyone else pick it), Goran Bregovic’s “Mesecina” for 4.2.
And a quuestion, are all the items that Nicolas pointed not eligible?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Hey hector, thanks for your picks. There are a few uneligible songs though.

I'll allow Osibisa and Kenyan Boys Choir (Pidgin English/mostly instrumental), but C21 - Stuck in My Heart (Denmark), Baha Men - Dancing in the Moonlight (Bahamas), and Tribes of Babel - Motherjane (India) are definitely not eligible.

Coloured Stone - Australia (Australia) I wanna get a second opinion on; they do sing in English but since it's rather hard to find non-Anglophone records from this region and since the music is very much Aboriginal it might be eligible. Nic?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

yes, I think we could make an exception

BTW, would you allow non anglophone songs from USA and Canada (Cajun, French songs from Quebec, Tejano in Spanish, Klezmer in Yiddish, etc...) ?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

I think we should, although someone like Shakira or Nelly Furtado, who have both released Spanish albums that don't have 1000 votes on RYM, probably should not be eligible.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

1.1 - Selda - Yaz gazeteci yaz

I might come back with Asian picks.

Yes let's say they're not eligible. the line is kinda blurred, but you are the judge (an I can be your assistant)

And one more question : I suppose Hawaii is in the Pacific region and not North America. What's your opinion ?

3.2. NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN Ganj-e-Shakar (part 1) (Pakistan, 1994): my brother did a great cover of this one!
3.3. CARAVAN (คาราวาน) Khon Kap Khwai (คนกับควาย) (Thailandia, 1975)
3.4. ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO'OLE Ka Pua U'i (Hawaii, US, 1993): oddly Israel has been recently (I mean two weeks ago) #1 in Spain with his delicious cover of Over the Rainbow

4.1. BOB HUND Düsseldorf (Sweden, 1996)
4.2. GORAN BREGOVIĆ Mesecina (Bosnia, 1995)
4.3. LOTTE LENYA Seeräuber Jenny (Germany, 1931)
4.4. SISA Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol (Spain, 1975): you can see some comments and my translation of the lyrics to English here

The most difficult was to find something for the point 3.3.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Honorio
Oops, just when I was going to post my list, André voted for my favourite Brazilian song.

Lo siento mucho. Igual buen gusto?

(my Spanish is really pésimo)

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

So far all regions have at least 7 nominations, while western Europe is already up to 13. With nicolas presumably having a song for every region, that brings us up to at least half the songs for each region after the first round, which is excellent.

Is anyone, besides nicolas, still planning to make a few nominations?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

2.3 - The Garifuna Women's Project - méRua (Belize)

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Just tell me when you want me to make my nominations

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

2.3. "A Gozar este rico mambo" - Tito Puente (This draws from Caribbean music, but Puente is a native New Yorker, so I suppose this come from the U.S.).

4.3. "Sufism" - The Gotan Project (France)

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

1.1 Ofra Haza - Im Nin'alu
1.2 Cesaria Evora - Sodade
2.1 Chico Science & Naçao Zumbi - Banditismo por Uma Questão de Classe.
2.2 Max Romeo - I Chase the Devil
2.4 Astor Piazolla - Libertango
3.1 Ryuichi Sakamoto - Riot to Lagos (instr)
4.2 Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel
4.3 Wim De Craene - Tim
4.4 Ufomammut - Eve

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

2.2 - Don Azpiazu - El Manicero (The Peanut Vendor) (Cuba; Single: The Peanut Vender (El Manicero) / True Love; 1930)
2.3 - Caifanes - La Célula Que Explota (Mexico; Album: El Diablito; 1990)

For the remaining three regions, I now give up searching in my collection. Well, I could nominate some song from Ryuichi Sakamoto (Japan), but the two instrumentals that come to mind already have been nominated by other AM forum members. And with Ohne Chanteuse from Yonderboi (Hungary) I have a love/hate relation, not really Hungarian folk either.

So that's it from my side.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Honorio

1.1. RACHID TAHA Ya Rayah (Algeria, 1998): many thanks, Nicolas, you’re so kind.

De nada, Honorio. "Ya Rayah" was first issued in 1993 on Taha's second and eponymous solo album

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Well, if you want to make a nomination for all regions I suggest you do it now, because we already have 15 for region 4.3.

After your nominations I'll wait a couple more days to see if anyone wants to make more nominations for Asia, which will have 8/9 noms max, and then we'll start round 2.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Ok, I'll post them today or tomorrow morning. I still have to make a choice or 2 (North Africa, Oceania, Northern Europe).

Edit : can I book my 4.3 ? It will be a Brassens song.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Sure.

That means 4.3 is now full!

4.2 Yossele Rosenblatt El Mole Rachmim (Fur Titanik) 1913
4.3 St Germain Sure Thing 2000

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

nicolas, I'll allow the Ivo's Group song.

David M, I'm afraid I can't count St. Germain anymore, because that region is now full.

The region closest to full is 1.2 with 14 songs, after which 1.1 and 4.4 both have 13 songs. I'll leave this round open until Friday and then open round 2. If you want to nominate another song for that round, I would advise you to be quick, because many regions only have 5 or 6 spots remaining.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Stephan,

I see only 13 nominations for West Africa and 12 for 1.1
Did you receive a ballot by email ?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Ah, yes, I counted your nomination for 1.1 twice.

1.2 does have 14 though, I believe.
Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra - Single
Alpha Blondy - Brigadier Sabari (Opération Coup De Poing)
Orchestra Baobab - Bul Ma Miin
Fela Kuti - Roforofo Fight
Salif Keita - Beguin the Beguine
Amadou & Mariam - Je pense à toi
Osibisa - Music for Gong Gong

Salif Keita feat. Cesarea - Evora Yamore
Cesaria Evora - Sodade
Toumani Diabaté - Kaounding Cissoko
Baaba Maal & Mansour Seck - Lam Tooro

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

You can take "Brigadier Sabary" out. It was Andre's first choice but he replaced it with another song (Zani Diabaté).

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

3.1 - Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi (Composed by A.R. Rahman) - Chaiyya Chaiyya
3.2 - Susumu Yokota - Secret Garden
3.3 - Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Dara Dam Chan - Mou Pei Na
3.4 - Fat Freddy's Drop - Big BW
Fat Freddy's Drop sing in English, but in this forum they are probably as unknown as every non-English singing act and they are SO GOOD. Plus, I don't know what else to put here...

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Ah yeah, all 4 of Andre's initial nominations were still in my list. Adding St Germain and Henrik's nominations, these are the regional song counts as of right now:

1.1 - 12
1.2 - 13
1.3 - 11
1.4 - 10
2.1 - 12
2.2 - 10
2.3 - 11
2.4 - 11
3.1 - 11
3.2 - 10
3.3 - 9
3.4 - 10
4.1 - 9
4.2 - 12
4.3 - 16 (Full)
4.4 - 12

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Stephan, did you accept Fat Freddy's Drop? I didn't think you would.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

I did. I listened to the song on youtube real quick and thought it was mostly instrumental, but the vocals do kick in quite a lot in the last half. I'll remove the song for now and keep it on the backburner; if we can't come up with enough songs for the region I'll add it back in.

On that note, the second round is now open!

I'll start things off with just a single song, just cause I really want to nominate The Sorcerer of the Guitar, but I don't want to give myself the advantage of nominating 2 songs for every region.

1.23 Franco - Liberté - Congo

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Franco is 1.3, Stephan !

A first shot

1.1 Hassan Hakmoun & Adam Rudolph - Ma'Bud Allah (Morocco) youtube Gnawa music
1.2 Kante Manfila - Agne Anko (Guinea) youtube beautiful folk song, sorry for the bad scratching disc on the vid
1.3 Festival Maquisard & Sam Mangwana - Festival Bilombe (DRC)

4.4 Paco de Lucía - Entre dos aguas (Spain) youtube

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Others I'm pretty sure of ; sorry to nominate so much so soon but I've been 100% on this game so you can take off some of my votes if you get too many 2 round votes

2.2 Grupo Vocal Desendann - Guédé Nibo (Haïti)
2.3 Ry Cooder feat. David Lindley - Canción Mixteca (USA/Mexico) spotify
2.4 Melingo - Pequeño Paria (Argentina) youtube

3.2 Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn - Na Ruk Te Hai Aanso (Pakistan)
3.4 Pynolasa Bamboo Band - Mouna Manu (Papua New Guinea)

4.2 Naftule Brandwein - Nifty's Freilach (Ukraine) youtube klezmer music

Yes, another Nusrat at 3.2, but that one is different from the rest, recorded live in Lahore. Very passionate and deprived of Western production. If I hear something great for the region, I'll change my vote but I doubt I'll hear anything better (except maybe another Nusrat song)

I have mp3s of the songs without spotify or youtube links

awesome, that was fast!

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

In 4.2 I'd like to nominate
Ferus Mustafov - Orient cocek
but I can't find it on the web.

If it can't be found I nominate
Goran Bregovic - Ederlezi

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

4.4 - Joan Manuel Serrat - Mediterraneo

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Stephan
2.2 Max Romeo I Chase the Devil Jamaica
Great song, but I don't see how it can be eligible.

Edit: Same with Exuma - The Obeah Man and Growling Tiger - Money Is King. Am I missing something?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Henrik, pidgin English is allowed, that's why those songs are eligible.
the line is pretty blurred but what we want to avoid is songs that sound like they were performed by a standard US/UK pop/rock group.
those songs sound really "local", that's the point.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Stephan, how do you intend to proceed with songs that are nowhere on the Net ? Will you open a space where we can upload the mp3s ? I can also put some of them on youtube if I have the time but I'm not sure I can do it with all of them

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

OK, Pidgin English is not my expertise and the line seems blurry indeed. How much of the reggae is eligible?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Max Romeo is probably closest to being ineligible, because the song is pretty close to 'regular' English and the album does have 400 votes or so. Then again, the same argument could be made (less close to English, but more votes) for Exuma. Exuma does sound more foreign, but that might just be because we're used to reggae.

Anyone really in favor of excluding either one? Growling Tiger is very much pidgin English and not famous at all, so I don't think that one is contentious.

nicolas: I was planning to make 16 mp3 packs for people to download, I think that would make things easiest. I'll set up a Dropbox where people can submit some of their songs they think are hardest to find. If you leave your email here I'll send you an invite. I don't have a whole lot of time this weekend so I can't check yet how many of the songs I can procure, but I should be able to get quite a few of them.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

On the contrary, I think Exuma sounds more American than Max Romeo. Not very different from Richie Heavens or Dr John. Max Romeo is typically Jamaican but more popular...

So i think we should stick to the rules you set. The only difficulty is the appreciation of "pidgin English". No doubt for Growling Tiger (I don't really understand him) while Max R is pretty clear (but you could also say that of Fela).

I think that we should keep them, but I'll call to your good sense regarding reggae : try to pick something which sounds very Jamaican in spirit and please try to submit songs that are not very popular or from albums with more than 200/300 ratings on RYM.

If you don't feel comfortable, don't post anything reggae

IMO more than to the rules everyone should stick to the spirit of the game : chosing different songs. The songs IMO should show influences of the local culture (style, language) and shouldn't be very popular on an international basis.

BTW, I'm gonna make a change to one of my first round picks

in the 4.1 region, please replace Larry's Dream with

Atalyja - Gervele (Lituania) youtube beautiful song but the mp3 might be tricky to find

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Yeah, I'm also in favor of allowing them. Any song that is on youtube is fine, because I can simply rip an MP3 from the youtube video.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Steohan I sent you an email at your neoptolemos address, hope it's still working

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

A second round filled by incredible ladies (Makoma, Makeba, Creuza, Cruz, Vargas, Aksu, Nimol, Protopsalti) and with a lot of preponderance of Goran Bregovic (he shows on 3.2., 4.2. and 4.4. being as producer or as solo artist).

1.1. CHEB KHALED Chebba (Algeria, 1995).
1.2. TINARIWEN Cler Achel (Mali, 2006), studio version
1.3. PAPA WEMBA & NATHALIE MAKOMA 6 Millions Ya Ba Soucis (Congo, 2010)
1.4. MIRIAM MAKEBA Qongquothwane (The Click Song) (South Africa, 1960)

2.1. VINICIUS DE MORAES con MARIA CREUZA y TOQUINHO A felicidade (Brazil, 1970)
2.2. CELIA CRUZ & JOHNNY PACHECO Químbara (Cuba/Dominican Republic, 1974)
2.3. CHAVELA VARGAS La llorona (Mexico, 1966), the previous clip is an amazing 2002 cover for the movie Frida, here it is a 1991 version.
2.4. ANDRÉS CALAMARO No son horas (Argentina, 1999)

3.1. TAKASHI HIRAYASU & BOB BROZMAN Chon Chon Kijimuna (Japan/USA, 2001)
3.2. SEZEN AKSU with THE WEDDING FUNERAL BAND Erkekler (Turkey, 1997): Stephan, Sezen Aksu is from Istambul, I’m not sure about putting her on 3.2. or 4.2.
3.3. DENGUE FEVER Genjer Genjer (Cambodia/USA, 2009), the original studio version is not on YouTube (but it’s on Spotify as the B-side of "Tiger Phone Card"): Stephan, if this band is not allowed because they are really from Los Angeles please use this other version sang by Lilis Suryani (Indonesia, 1965)
3.4. ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO'OLE Ka Huila Wai (Hawaii, US, 1993)

4.1. JAKOB HELLMAN Vara vänner (Sweden, 1989)
4.2. GORAN BREGOVIĆ Cajesukarije cocek (Bosnia, 1995)
4.4. ALKISTIS PROTOPSALTI S'agapo (Greece, 1991), listen to this wonderful solo of an unknown instrument from 3'16" (anyone knows which instrument is that?)

I supposed I'm not allowed to vote for a second song for some of these points, if not I'll post the videos on the recommendation thread for others to vote...
1.2. YOUSSOU N’DOUR & LE SUPER ÉTOILE DE DAKAR Immigrés/Bitim Rew (Senegal, 1984).
2.2. ANDY PALACIO & THE GARIFUNA COLLECTIVE Wátina (Belize, 2007).
2.2. HENRI SALVADOR Dans mon île (French Guiana, 1958).
2.4. VÍCTOR JARA Te recuerdo Amanda (Chile, 1969).
4.4. PAOLO CONTE La giarrettiera rosa (Italy, 1958)

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Turkey was actually put with 1.1, and I'll allow Dengue Fever.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Oops, replace then Khaled's "Chebba" by Sezen Aksu's "Erkekler" on 1.1. and put on 3.2. another lady, FARIDA KHANUN Aaj jane ki zid na karo (Pakistan, 1978)

Sorry, a mistake on the previous post, the Paolo Conte song was released in 1974...

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

2.1 Caetano Veloso - Coração materno

Edit : Well... I don't know I'm hesitating between Caetano and Paulinho Da Viola - Coração leviano

Which heart will I chose ?

As there is already one Caetano song in, I will finally pick

2.1 Paulinho Da Viola - Coração leviano youtube , a great samba by a great singer with a superb melody. I'm uploading the mp3 (a better version than the video)

And also, please replace 2.4 Melingo - Pequeño paria with

2.4 Henri Salvador - Dans mon île (French Guyana) youtube

Sorry Stephan

For those who don't know what to pick as 2.4 please consider Melingo

Only 1 nomination left for Brazil & West Africa !

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

and 1 left for Southern Europe too

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

2 left for Brazil. 1 left for Eastern Europe though!

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

like nic, i'm happy to withdraw some of these if people who haven't voted yet would like to nominate some songs

1.1 - Abdel Aziz el Mubarak - "Tahrimni Minnak" (Sudan)
1.2 - Baaba Maal - "Tindo" (Senegal)
1.3 - Geoffrey Oryema - "Lapwony" (Uganda)
1.4 - Abdullah Ibrahim - "The Mountain" (South Africa)

2.1 - Vinicius Cantuaria - "Vivo Isolado do Mundo" (Brazil)
2.2 - Boukman Eksperyans - "Nou La" (Haiti)
2.3 - Esquivel - "Latin-Esque" (Mexico)
2.4 - Susana Baca - "Tu Mirada y Mi Voz" (Peru)

3.1 - Fantastic Plastic Machine - "Philter" (Japan)
3.2 - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Michael Brook - "Sweet Pain" (Pakistan)
3.3 - The Dawn - "Abot Kamay" (Phillipines)
3.4 - what else are other people planning on putting here? i'd like to add something by gabby or atta, but haven't settled on a song yet, open to suggestions.

4.1 - still don't know here...
4.2 - Marta Sebestyen - "Harom Arva" (Hungary)
4.3 - Heather Jones - "Nos Ddu" (Wales)
4.4 - Nino Rota - "Amarcord" (Italy)

actually, i'd love to nominate Suba's beautiful "A Felicidade" but i'm not sure where it belongs. he was serbian, but by this time he was living and working in brazil, and the song probably belongs with others from this region, so in that case replace the Cantuaria song (otherwise, the Sebestyen one). thanks.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Can't accept your 4.3 since it's already full, but that makes:

1.2 - 16 (Full)
4.2 - 16 (Full)
4.3 - 16 (Full)
4.4 - 16 (Full)

However, like Greg said, if someone who hasn't nominated for these regions yet really wants to nominate a song, let me know and we'll work something out.

I'll nominate the gorgeous Ett Enskilt Rum På Sabbatsberg by John Holm for 4.1, courtesy of Fred's great thread on Sweden.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

ah bummer, it'd be nice to have something welsh in there...anybody wanna trade?

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

I'm biased but I thought 4.1 would be one of the first to be filled. As a companion to Fred's list, here are some of my favorite Swedish songs, in chronological order:

Lars Gullin - Danny's Dream (since Nicolas changed his vote) (jazz)
Jojje Wadenius - Kalles klätterträd (children's music)
Pugh Rogefeldt - Här kommer natten (psychedelic rock)
Träd, gräs och stenar - Sanningens silverflod (psychedelic rock)
John Holm - Ett enskilt rum på Sabbatsberg (singer/songwriter)
Nationalteatern - Livet är en fest (folk rock)
Peps Blodsband - Hög standard (reggae)
Magnus Uggla - Varning på stan (pop punk)
Dag Vag - Dimma (punk)
Mikael Wiehe - Flickan och kråkan (singer/songwriter)
Adolphson & Falk - Blinkar blå (synth pop)
Lustans lakejer - Diamanter är en flickas bästa vän (new wave)
Ulf Lundell - Den vassa eggen (rock)
Eldkvarn - Kärlekens tunga (rock)
Di Leva - Vi har bara varandra (pop)
Lisa Ekdahl - Vem vet (singer/songwriter)
Bo Kaspers orkester - Puss (jazz pop)
Petter - Så klart! (hip hop)
Kaah - Dom tittar när jag dansar (soul/funk)
Detektivbyrån - E18 (folktronica)

The following songs are also among my favorites, however they are foreign songs that were rewritten with Swedish lyrics so maybe less interesting for this game:
Lill Lindfors - Du är den ende (pop)
Fred Åkerström - Jag ger dig min morgon (singer/songwriter)

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round
Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Stephan, you put Arvo Pärt in the 4.2 section but it belongs to 4.1 (Estonia)

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Thanks! Still 1 spot left in 4.2 then.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

and another (small) mistake is that you switched Henrik's 3.2 and 3.1 asian votes (he placed them wrong)

Here's my count

1.1 15
1.2 16 (full)
1.3 15
1.4 12

2.1 15
2.2 13
2.3 15
2.4 15

3.1 13
3.2 13
3.3 11
3.4 10

4.1 14
4.2 15
4.3 16 (full)
4.4 16 (full)

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Thanks, I haven't really had the time to do anything but add them to the spreadsheet. And I have the same count.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

3.1 Hanggai - My Banjo And I (China) youtube

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Full (with 16 nominations)

1.2 West Africa
1.3 East Central Africa

2.1 Brazil
2.3 North/Central America
2.4 South America

3.1 East Asia (Japan China Korea Vietnam Mongolia)

4.1 to 4.4 : all Europe

However, like Stephan said, if someone who hasn't nominated for these regions yet really wants to nominate a song, let us know and we'll work something out.

Still open for people who have nominated less than 2 songs :

1.1 North Africa (1 song left)
1.3 Southern Africa (3 songs)

2.2 Caribbean (1 song left)

3.2 South Asia (3 songs left)
3.3 Southeast Asia (4 songs left)
3.4 Oceania (6 songs left)

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

I'm gonna change two of my votes

Stephan, I'll post my final updated lists in whole if you want and replace the mp3 files in the Dropbox

In 2.3, I'd like to remove Ry Cooder and his 500+ RYM ratings and replace it with

The Klezmorim - Fidl Volach (USA) spotify

In 4.2, I'd like to replace Naftule Brandwein by

Aleksandar Šišić - Ćhelipe (Serbia) youtube

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

If it is allowed I want to give the second votes I have left to nicolas for his thoroughgoing work.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Thanks for the list Mindrocker! I'm gonna need a few changes though. First, I can't accept 3 songs from 1.3, there's only place for 2. You'll have to pick two. Secondly, I can't accept 2 songs from 2.4, because we already have 15 songs. You'll have to pick one.

Yeah Henrik, that is acceptable. Feel free to nominate another round nicolas. Also, anyone can vote another time for 3.3 and 3.4 if they want to (that means you can vote twice for those, nic).

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Thanks guys !!

First I'm gonna give you my remaining 2nd round nominations

1.4 Regis Gizavo - Malaso (Madagascar) youtube

3.3 Sambasunda - Lost Two Tigers (Indonesia)

Then, on behalf of Henrik

2.2 Compay Segundo - Yo Vengo aqui youtube

More to come later

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Nomination Round

Actually, sorry Mindrocker, but there's only 1 spot for 1.3 left, so I can only accept 1 of the 3.

Also, there hasn't been a single album nomination yet. Is anyone interested in this small added competition or not?

Remaining:
1.1 - 1
1.4 - 2
2.3 - 1
3.2 - 2
3.3 - 3
3.4 - 6

Nicolas, the bolded numbers are the ones that are different between the two of us; I'm not sure who of us is wrong, perhaps you counted hectorthebat's Motherjane?
