01/11/2011 Mega-Critic-Chart: Best Reviewed Albums Of 2011, so far

The best albums of 2011 (update november, 1)

The ratings come from a formula I invented myself that includes a) average of ratings from different sources and b) numbers of magazines that rated the album. The Formula: Album’s average score + ((number of reviews for this album - the number of reviews mediating between the top 100):2)

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
USA: All Music Guide; AV Club; Cokemachineglow; One Thirty BPM;Pitchforkmedia, Popmatters, Rolling I Stone, Slant, Spin, Tinymixtapes
UK: Drowned In Sound, The Guardian, Music OMH, NME, No Ripcord
EUR: Gaffa; Nojesguiden; Plattentests
SPA: Playgrounmag; Mondosonoro; Jenesaispop”

“I’ve been takin account of record ratings from 22 magazines for a while just for my own interest. That’s why I weighted the ratings of three Spanish web-magazines that I usually consult, MondoSonoro, JeNeSaisPop and PlaygroundMag. Since Stefan left Magcritic I decided to post what I’ve got but I know that it could be better to replace one or two of the Spanish magazines for another prestigious European magazine that publish at least 400 record reviews per year. I told this on a previous thread but I got no answer. Any suggestions about that?”

Go Tom! And thanks again Otis.

Oh, and I have no idea which European magazines could be used.

Instead of replacing the Spanish publications, why not shift the balance away from US dominance? Rolling Stone hasn't had any legitimacy for years, why include it just because it has the most name recognition? And too many of the US publications you've chosen are indiekind webzines who give the ratings they feel they're supposed to give rather than their actual feelings.

I would ask Henrik, since he seems to be the most aware of what publications think for themselves and yield the most variety.

Re: 01/11/2011 Mega-Critic-Chart: Best Reviewed Albums Of 2011, so far

Now I know I'm probably in the minority on this, but I for one am sorely disappointed in the absence of Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto in this list. I admit that I'm not surprised, because all of the reviews I've seen so far have been lukewarm at best. I was dissapointed myself on the first listen, but it has grown on me each time I've played it since, and I now think it's on the same level of Parachutes and AROBTTH, at least. I encourage everyone to give it a chance if you haven't already (even you Moonbeam, it has synths! ).

Re: 01/11/2011 Mega-Critic-Chart: Best Reviewed Albums Of 2011, so far

I see a lot of albums that are worse than The King of Limbs getting higher marks. Sad...
