Re: DIVISIONS: Week 6

STADIUM
Bruce Springsteen (Born in the U.S.A.)
I might like Hey Jude more if I hadn't seen Paul play it live too many times. Every time he's got this schmaltzy look on his face mugging to the audience like "Hey look, it's that song you know!" Then he does these cheesy light shows and big productions during the 'na na na na na na na' part. Paul's solo performing style makes the song so horrible live I can no longer stand listening to it.
The Rolling Stones (Brown Sugar)
Bob Dylan (Blown’ in the Wind)
Jimi Hendrix (Voodoo Chile (Slight Return))
Led Zeppelin (Kashmir)
Radiohead (Karma Police)

ARENA
The Velvet Underground (Rock and Roll)
Pink Floyd (With You Were Here)
Bob Marley (I Shot the Sheriff)
Elvis Costello (Radio, Radio)
With Or Without You has a nice guitar part but it marks the beginning of U2's melodramatic tendencies.
The Smiths (There Is a Light That Never Goes Out)
Neil Young (Cinnamon Girl)

CLUB
Talking Heads (Burning Down the House)
Michael Jackson (Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough)
Love early Michael.
Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire)
Beck (Devil’s Haircut)
Public Enemy (Don’t Believe the Hype)
The Doors (Break on Through (to the Other Side))
Break On Through is an adrenaliny song. Lola has funny lyrics, but musically it doesn't have much staying power.

COFFEE SHOP
Pixies (Where Is My Mind?)
Big Yellow Taxi is awesome, but they need to stop playing bad covers of it at work.
Otis Redding (Tramp)
Lou Reed (Sweet Jane (Live))
The White Stripes (My Doorbell)
Tom Waits (Tom Traubert’s Blues)
Ironic matchup here, considering World Cup.
Sonic Youth (Into the Groove(y)

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 6

STADIUM

Bruce Springsteen (Born in the U.S.A.): 4
The Beatles (Hey Jude): 2

Yikes. "Born in the U.S.A." may mean well, but it sure sounds cheesy, and this is ME talking. For as much as I defend synthesizers, I acknowledge that there are some instances where they detract from a song, and this song immediately springs to mind. Bruce's vocals are a bit too over-the-top for me, too. That said, it is still head-and-shoulders above the circle-jerk anthemizing that is "Hey Jude".

The Rolling Stones (Brown Sugar): 5
The Who (I Can’t Explain): 3

"Brown Sugar" almost makes me like it, but something I can't quite put my finger on prevents me from doing so. "I Can't Explain" is good by Who standards, but it still grates.

Elvis Presley (Suspicious Minds): 7
Bob Dylan (Blown’ in the Wind): 1

"Suspicious Minds" is my favorite Elvis song, mostly due to his own restraint and the wonderful performance of the female backing singers. "Blowin' in the Wind" means well, but is totally obnoxious to the ears.

Jimi Hendrix (Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)): 8
David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust): 7

Jimi Hendrix takes advantage of one of the weaker songs on Ziggy with some heroic guitar wizardry. I'm a bit baffled as to how "Ziggy Stardust" is the most acclaimed song on its album. Surely "Moonage Daydream", "Starman", "Suffragette City", "Five Years" and "Rock 'n Roll Suicide" at the very least deserve more praise.

The Beach Boys (Don’t Worry Baby): 8
Led Zeppelin (Kashmir): 5

"Don't Worry Baby" is rather gorgeous, isn't it? I liked "Kashmir" more than I thought I would. I'll admit that the driving riff is quite effective. That said, there are enough trademark LZ elements that I don't like in "Kashmir" to drag the rating down to a 5.

Prince (Sign “o” the Times): 10
Radiohead (Karma Police): 9

My two favorite songs of the Stadium Division this week are pitted against each other. No fair! "Sign o' the Times" is one of the few political statement songs that Prince gets right, and the tension inherent in the music can only sustain so long before those guttural guitar bursts threaten to tear it apart. Just wonderful. "Karma Police", meanwhile, is one of my favorite Radiohead songs. That "for a minute there I lost myself" transition is brilliant.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 6

ARENA

Stevie Wonder (Uptight (Everything’s Alright)): 6
The Velvet Underground (Rock and Roll): 6

Both are far from the best of these artists. Stevie by a hair.

Marvin Gaye (Let’s Get It On): 6
Pink Floyd (With You Were Here): 2

Marvin Gaye's attempt to woo is much better than "Sexual Healing", but still doesn't quite do it for me. Still, it's light years ahead of the languid haze of "Wish You Were Here".

R.E.M. (The One I Love): 7
Bob Marley (I Shot the Sheriff): 3

"The One I Love" is probably my favorite R.E.M. song. It has a dark tint that I enjoy. I still don't get any enjoyment out of Bob Marley, although I acknowledge his importance.

U2 (With or Without You): 9
Elvis Costello (Radio, Radio): 7

"With or Without You" is swoon-worthy U2 near its best (best would be "All I Want Is You" in my book), while "Radio, Radio" is indeed a blast, but is bettered by several tracks from This Year's Model for me.

The Smiths (There Is a Light That Never Goes Out): 10
The Clash (Rock the Casbah): 8

"There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" is a well-deserved forum favorite, as it adeptly captures the humor, magic, romance and beauty of The Smiths in one song. "Rock the Casbah" is a riot that deserves a better fate than to be pitted against such a titan.

Nirvana (All Apologies): 9
Neil Young (Cinnamon Girl): 5

Nirvana's visceral and beautiful juggernaut totally declaws Neil Young's attempt at a rocker.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 6

CLUB

James Brown (It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World): 9
Talking Heads (Burning Down the House): 8

"It's a Man's Man's Man's World" is my favorite James Brown song by a fair bit. The string seduction combined with Brown's godly vocal performance launches it into the stratosphere. "Burning Down the House" is another great song, but it isn't up to scratch with James Brown at his best.

Michael Jackson (Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough): 9
Aretha Franklin (I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You): 6

I feel a lot better now that I have a chance to vote for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" after voting against it in the World Cup game. It IS Off the Wall, which dukes it out for my 2nd favorite MJ album behind Bad. Kooky disco delights. The Aretha track is yet another one that I like more than I expected.

Van Morrison (Into the Mystic): 6
Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire): 4

I like both of these more than I expected, and I could see "Into the Mystic" growing on me further. Johnny Cash is a rightful legend with a sound that I just don't care for.

The Byrds (I Fell a Whole Lot Better): 5
Beck (Devil’s Haircut): 5

Neither song makes much of an impact, but I'd rather listen to "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better".

Public Enemy (Don’t Believe the Hype): 7
Creedence Clearwater Revival (Bad Moon Rising): 5

Public Enemy seems to peak at a rating of 7 for me, but I do enjoy their stuff, and "Don't Believe the Hype" is right up there. I like CCR at times, and generally more than on "Bad Moon Rising".

The Doors (Break on Through (to the Other Side)): 8
The Kinks (Lola): 7

It's a sign of both my past and my future that while The Kinks are some 200 places behind The Doors in my artist list according to Henrik's formula, this feels like an upset.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 6

COFFEE SHOP

Pixies (Where Is My Mind?): 5
Joni Mitchell (Yellow Taxi): 2

"Where Is My Mind?" may be the song that warms me to Pixies, but I'm not quite there yet. Those high-pitched background vocals are pretty lush, though. I recently heard Blue for the first time and was surprised by how much I liked it, mostly due to the fact that my impression of Joni Mitchell was largely based on "Big Yellow Taxi", which has always grated me.

Ramones (I Wanna Be Sedated): 7
Otis Redding (Tramp): 5

"I Wanna Be Sedated" is good fun from Ramones, even if they've done better. "Tramp" has some good sass, but Otis Redding also has much better songs.

The Cure (Inbetween Days): 10
Lou Reed (Sweet Jane (Live)): 7

"Inbetween Days" is the first dream pop smash from The Cure, and it still hits all the right buttons. "Sweet Jane", meanwhile, is probably the highlight of a bad Loaded album, and although the live version improves it, it still is no match for The Cure.

Roxy Music (A Song for Europe): 10
The White Stripes (My Doorbell): 6

The majestic drama of "A Song for Europe" has long been a favorite of mine, and it easily outclasses a fun but otherwise unremarkable White Stripes track.

Tom Waits (Tom Traubert’s Blues): 8
Blur (Out of Time): 7

Both of these artists have risen in my esteem thanks to this game and the World Cup. "Tom Traubert's Blues" moves me a little bit more.

Kraftwerk (Trans-Europa Express): 9
Sonic Youth (Into the Groove(y)): 5

"Trans Europe Express" is an enduring classic pivotal to both synth pop and hip hop, while "Into the Groove(y)" is merely an interesting cover of a great Madonna dance-pop song.

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 6

Week 6 (Song 3 vs. Song 4)
STADIUM
Bruce Springsteen (Born in the U.S.A)
Hey Jude is one The Beatles songs I reeeaaalllly hate!!!

The Who (I Can’t Explain)
One of my least favorite Stones songs vs. a song where I kinda like Scorpions remake from '88 better than the Original, I know it felt crazy typing it too...

PASS -- Just not a big fan of either

David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust)
Why can't Jimi be part of the above matchup!!!

Led Zeppelin (Kashmir)

Radiohead (Karma Police)
Sign 'O The Times is the 2nd best song in this group, it seems unfair to vote against it!!!

ARENA
Stevie Wonder (Uptight (Everything’s Alright))
Never been a big VU fan, the 2 worst songs in this group.

Pink Floyd (With You Were Here)

R.E.M. (The One I Love)

Elvis Costello (Radio, Radio)
This is such a great group, I just voted against 3 songs I really like.

The Smiths (There Is a Light That Never Goes Out)
The Clash makes it 4 great songs I voted against in the row, sad thing is "Let's Get It On", "I Shot The Sheriff", "With Or Without You" & "Rock The Casbah" all would have won the 1st or last matchup in this group.

Nirvana (All Apologies) vs. Neil Young (Cinnamon Girl)
I guess, 2 songs I kinda like, they are both in my iPod but I tend to skip over them kind of songs...

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 6

CLUB
James Brown (It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World)

PASS -- Not feeling either right now.

Van Morrison (Into the Mystic)
Only Van song I really love...

The Byrds (I Fell a Whole Lot Better)
Not sure why I find myself on an anti-Beck kick lately.

Public Enemy (Don’t Believe the Hype)

The Doors (Break on Through (to the Other Side))

COFFEE SHOP
Pixies (Where Is My Mind?)
Easiest choice ever...

Ramones (I Wanna Be Sedated)

The Cure (Inbetween Days)
Another super easy choice...

The White Stripes (My Doorbell)

Blur (Out Of Time)
Twice in one week I vote against this song, this time no Billy Joel filler comments!!!

PASS -- Ugliest matchup of the week!!!

Re: DIVISIONS: Week 6

Week 6 (Song 3 vs. Song 4)
STADIUM
Bruce Springsteen (Born in the U.S.A.) vs. The Beatles (Hey Jude) : Both somewhat overwrought, but I'm goin' with the pure pop this time
The Who (I Can’t Explain) vs. The Rolling Stones (Brown Sugar) : Not my favorite by either, but I always found Brown Sugar a bit too casually racist/sexist for my liking
Elvis Presley (Suspicious Minds) vs. Bob Dylan (Blown’ in the Wind)
Jimi Hendrix (Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)) vs. David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust) : Tough one!
The Beach Boys (Don’t Worry Baby) vs. Led Zeppelin (Kashmir) : Also very tough...one would expect me to go with the Beach Boys over Zep I suppose, but I always though Don't Worry wasn't quite as great as its reputation, and Kashmir is monumental
Prince (Sign “o” the Times) vs. Radiohead (Karma Police) : Never a big Karma Police fan, even in 1997
