Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
The non-32 pools are really cool and will be the highlight of the tournament. Brian Eno seems to have gotten a good draw, which is fortunate for me because PE is likely to get slaughtered (even I will probably vote for VU and Bowie in a few of the matchups).
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
The groups have become awesome! And I've got too terible (in the sense of difficulty) groups for R.E.M and Vampire Weekend, with Coldplay's electronic group being a bit smoother.
Well, here goes my Vampire Weekend lineup!
1) Boston
2) Run
3) Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa
4) Diplomat's Son
5) Cousins
6) A Punk
7) M79
8) Oxford Comma

Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Great pool set up, Listyguy!
Regarding the schedule I wrote in another thread:
Andre
I would like simultaneous pool matches, so over the 6 weeks it would best to alternate the 2 brackets.
You chose to mix the top 32 and oustide top 32 brackets and the last matches in the group phase are not simultaneously (either week 5 or week 6).
Hopefully, we don't get a similar situation like e.g. at the world cup in 1982, where West Germany and Austria played an awful 1-0 match. Both teams were through to the next round and Algeria, who had played their last match a day earlier, were out...
Too bad, the Triffids didn't make it. Tentative songs list for the Doors:
1. Break On Through (To the Other Side)
2. Light My Fire
3. The End
4. People Are Strange
5. Hello, I Love You
6. L.A. Woman
7. Riders on the Storm
8. The Crystal Ship
Yep, that's exactly the 8 songs listed at The Doors' AM page
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Listyguy, can you tell something about the presentation? Are you going to add links of the competing songs to listen to? (Just like in the unacclaimed songs poll, for example).
If not, I'm afraid the lesser known songs will have a tough time to pass. And the artist with most greatest hits will probably win.
Edit: Or maybe the managers are allowed to include links, to promote their players? Just a thought.

As long as there's a 'Must have heard them both rule', I think it's possible for lesser known songs to get through, especially when we get to the single elimination rounds. It's true the ones nearer the top of the AM list have the most fans, but they can also be the most divisive. Remember Satisfaction went out in the first round of bracketology.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Elvis Presley:
match-up 1: Suspicion
match-up 2: (Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame
match-up 3: In the Ghetto
match-up 4: Are You Lonesome Tonight?
match-up 5: Return to Sender
match-up 6: Heartbreak Hotel
match-up 7: Mystery Train
match-up 8: Blue Moon
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Moonbeam, I immediately thought of you when I saw that the Cure and Eurythmics were in the same pool.
Biladama and Mindrocker, I may include links for songs not on AM, and of course, you can only vote if you've heard both songs.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Brad
Black Sabbath:
1. War Pigs
2. The Wizard
3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
4. Iron Man
5. Symptom Of The Universe
6. N.I.B.
7. Supernaut
8. Paranoid
Thanks!
Solid lineup. Good to know there's another big Sabbath fan on the board. I personally would have thrown a deeper track "Lord of This World" or "Killing Yourself to Live" on there, but this lineup will probably be more successful
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Yeah I think that's the real challenge here in picking songs. These are by no means my top 10 sabbath songs, but I realize if I want them to go anywhere in the competition, I have to pick the more well-known ones as well as those that may be immediately accessible to newcomers. Love the two you mentioned, thought about tomorrow's dream, fairies wear boots, wheels of confusion, etc.. No dio though I admit a fondness for h&h and mob rules.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Beastie Boys
1. A Year and A Day
2. I Don't Know
3. Hey Ladies
4. Make Some Noise
5. Shake Your Rump
6. The Negotiation Limerick File
7. Alright Hear This
8. Sure Shot
I tried to put LCD in the best situation to win, here I just put some songs I'd like people to listen to.
I was very tempted to put Shadrach to compensate for Listyguy not putting Loose Booty in his Sly's selection, but I will stick with those 8 (though if by any miracle reach the 1/4 final, I might change the 3 last songs).

My coaching would be to just put a song you love in the 3rd spot, it will face Johnny Cash's Hurt so I don't think it stands the slightest chance in AM ^^ And put accessible ones on the first 2 spots, where they have their chances ! I don't know Black Sabbath as well as I should, I'm currently listening your selection and I really like it. I would have liked to see Snowblind in it too though ^^
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
In terms of bad draws, I don't think anyone has it worse than Stephan. He's up against two board favorites and an artist with loads of classic hit singles.

Good point about Cash- I may have to alter the lineup slightly. And yes, Vol. 4 is quite an awesome album. Thanks guys!

I assume you're talking about Stephan's Fela Kuti pick, not the Rolling Stones.

Yeah. It's Schwah who got the bad draw in that group. Three opponents who always finish in the top ten in our artist polls.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
To be honest, I don't really expect Fela to get to the next round, but I've just been listening to like 20 of his albums and he's such a fantastic artist that I felt he needed some more exposure.
I also picked some songs that basically cover an entire album, so if people want to vote they'll have to enjoy quite a bit of Fela. I'm a bastard.

Fela Kuti was a great choice and absolutely the right kind of artist for this competition (acclaimed but not necessarily popular on the board). I've been obsessed with the song "Zombie" for the last month.

Considering most of the managers put their artists well-known/well liked songs in the 6-8 spots, there will definitley be a lot of exposure to artists lesser known gems.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Talking about the groups, for me the group of death is the A.8: Bruce Springsteen, The Who, The Smiths and Talking Heads! Anyone can easily stay and easily get out...

Despite my affection for The Who, I see Springsteen as the clear favorite in this group. I see the Smiths coming in second, The Who in third, and The Talking Heads in last.
My prediction skills are not particularly strong though.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
The song order is the order the songs will be used. The first song will be used during week 1, second during week 2, and so on. I've seen two major strategies people are using: put the artist's best songs in the last weeks, or put one of the artist's best songs in the pool round, and put the others in the later weeks. Feel free to use another strategy, if you have one.

I have heard those albums, but I did not get to listening to them in deciding the song list. I will listen to those songs and perhaps switch them in. I think Hold On and Singapore are possible weak links on my list.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Tom Traubert is a masterpiece and could please people who are repelled by Waits' bizarreness. It's a classical ballad delivered with all of Tom's expressionism. Tom is excellent at ballads.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists

I'm trying to find a mix of the more accessible stuff and the more 'hardcore Waits' stuff. I'll re-listen to Tom Traubert's Blues and maybe sub it in somewhere. (It all, of course, depends on the game situation after round 2).

On you list, you have "Beside You" listed for Van Morrison. If you want to switch that with "Into the Mystic", you are welcome to. I just want to make sure I know.

the lists i submitted are little more than placeholders and i really didn't spend much time on them. thanks for the heads-up, though.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Reminder: Artists competing in week 2 will have their current song locked in at midnight July 9. I will issue another warning about 10-12 hours beforehand.
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Henrik- I will be adding Youtube links to the songs this week, and I want to make sure this is the correct version of Bob Marley's "Sun is Shining".

Listyguy, please could I change round my lists for the later weeks?
Here's the order I would like to change them to:
The Byrds

2) I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better
3) My Back Pages
4) Turn! Turn! Turn!
5) The Bells of Rhymney
6) Hickory Wind
7) So You Want to Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star
8) Mr. Tambourine Man
Arctic Monkeys
1) Mardy Bum
2) Cornerstone
3) View from the Afternoon
4) Fluorescent Adolescent
5) She’s Thunderstorms
6) Fake Tales of San Francisco
7) A Certain Romance
8) I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor
Revised Sly and the Family Stone List, to compensate for the upset at the hands of the Eurythmics:
1- Everybody Is a Star
2- Family Affair
3- If You Want Me To Stay
4- Don’t Call Me Nigger, Whitey
5- Dance to the Music
6- Hot Fun in the Summertime
7- Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin)
8- Everyday People
Reminder:
Lists for week 3 are due in less than 5 and a half hours. Alex D, Greg, Moonbeam, if you want to make your weekly changes, you have until the end of the day (on forum time) to do so.

None of my artists are going to battle in Week 3 according to the schedule, so I'll wait to see how things play out.
If possible, I'd like to go with World Leader Pretend for R.E.M. Thanks.
Damn, I was hoping you would stick with "Stand." That's alright. "Shangri-La" may not be my team's most heralded player, but it's my personal favorite and I have faith it can withstand your stronger line-up:
"Avory nutmegs Buck and crosses it to Dalton, who leaps over Berry to nod it down to Ray Davies. Davies uses a 1-2 with his brother to beat Mills and he only has Stipe to beat now..."

I wish I could have sticked with Stand and Orange Crush in this pool round, being both songs in my all time top 10. But unfortunately R.E.M got the hardest pool of the top 32 competition, so I had to go with a safer pick. At least it's also another track that I like and that belongs to the same album of the mentioned ones. You don't know how difficult it was to me to choose between World Leader Pretend or Orange Crush to substitute Stand. Hope that I don't regret in the end... I was really hoping that your song would be not that good, so I could put Orange on act, but, man, Shangri-la impressed me. I have never heard Arthur, and the track was a good (or should I say bad?) surprise.
Now let me stop working in favour of my opponent and put my team to play! I'm sure it's gonna be another tough and great contest.

Moonbeam, I'll let it slide this time, but you really need to try and get your chagnes in before 12:00 to keep things fair.
Crap! I thought I was 11 hours early and that editing lists ended at noon AM time. Thanks for being lenient - I imagine all of my choices would have been swept! I may still open a bizarre can of Eurythmics WTF in a later round, but it won't be of the "Lentils" variety.
Further edit: I can see that I had already posted a safer list for Eurythmics and Siouxsie, thankfully. I'd better do one for Prince just in case:
New Team Prince:
1. Let's Go Crazy
2. Raspberry Beret
3. Moonbeam Levels/I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man (if Prince wins/loses his second match)
4. Kiss
5. Little Red Corvette
6. Purple Rain
7. 1999
8. When Doves Cry
Re: AMF World Cup: Schedule, Pools, and Song Lists
Listyguy, this game has been great so far. Thanks so much for putting it together.
I hesitate to mess with something that is working so well, but I have a suggestion for weeks 5 and 6. Consider whether teams in the same group should all have their final match at in the same week. In the soccer World Cup, the final group games now kick off at the same time, so there is no repeat of the infamous West Germany-Austria (allegedly) pre-arranged result at Spain '82.
In this case, if a team knows they don't need to win in week 6 because of the results in Week 5, they can hold off on picking a stronger song until later in the tournament. That gives an unfair advantage to the teams competing in Week 6 from a group.
For example, if Vampire Weekend beats Eno this week, and Eno beats the Beasties in Week 5, then Kanye is guaranteed a spot in the second round, and his manager can throw out any song in Week 6 and save his better songs for later. But if Kanye has to kickoff at the same time as Eno-Beasties, he is still not guaranteed a place in the knockout round, and will have to go for the win.
Obviously, you could say the same for Stevie Wonder. But he clinched by Round 2, and not because he was able to wait for his opponents Round 3 results.
