Test of a divisions game

I have been thinking about a divisions game for a long time. I won't have time to run one in a larger scale, but I will set up a small one here and if there's any further interest in this then maybe someone else would like to take over.

My idea is that to have an "AM league" with several divisions of xxx artists, albums or songs in each division. The division structure could be for example linear (divisions 1, 2, 3, etc) or pyramid-shaped (divisions 1, 2:1, 2:2, 3:1, 3:2, 3:3, 3:4, etc.).

I will try a small-scale pyramid-shaped game here, with 4 artists in each division, using the AM rank as seed. The winner of a division would move up one division for the next season, the second would stay in the same division and the last two would move down one division.

Sorry if you feel that this game interfere with all the others. This should just be considered as a test, probably just one season.

Here are the artists in each division. You just rank them the way you like and give them points from 4 to 1. The points will be summed up when the season is over, let's say at the end of next Thursday, June 16th.

Division 1
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Bob Dylan
David Bowie

Division 2:1
Led Zeppelin
Bruce Springsteen
The Who
The Beach Boys

Division 2:2
Radiohead
Prince
Elvis Presley
Jimi Hendrix

Division 3:1
The Velvet Underground
Stevie Wonder
Pink Floyd
The Byrds

Division 3:2
Marvin Gaye
Nirvana
Bob Marley
Van Morrison

Division 3:3
R.E.M.
Neil Young
Elvis Costello
Aretha Franklin

Division 3:4
U2
The Clash
The Smiths
Talking Heads

If anyone have any ideas how this could be made better that's great. For example, is there a way lesser-known artists could be included with a reasonable size of the game?

Re: Test of a divisions game

Fun diversion! In addition to points, I'll say where I feel each artist would be in my personal list in terms of positive and negative divisions:

Division 1/-1: Top 1-4/Bottom 1-4 all-time
Division 2/-2: Top 5-12/Bottom 5-12
Division 3/-3: Top 13-28/Bottom 13-28
Division 4/-4: Top 29-60/Bottom 29-60
etc.

So positive divisions mean that I have some degree of enjoyment of an artist, while negative divisions mean that my feeling for the artist is mostly negative. Values close to 0 are most extreme.

Division 1

4pt David Bowie (Division 2)
3pt The Rolling Stones (Division 8)

Re: Test of a divisions game

I actually have something in the works along these lines, although more extensive. I'd be willing to take over after June 16th. I'd have a preseason until the end of the month, where some acts can be voted out of the game and others can be voted in to replace them. But for now ...

Comments about the idea:

It would probably be a high participation game because it takes so little time to vote.

My concern with this game is that it runs the risk of getting very, very repetitive.

If it were going to be some kind of long term thing you'd need to find a way to create more turnover in the top spots.

Re: Test of a divisions game

I think it would be cool if the divisions were broken up by genre. Obviously, nobody would agree about the breakdowns, but the breakdowns would be close enough that it would add something.

Using just these:
Soul Division: Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Prince
Classic Rock Division: Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, Pink Floyd
Folk Division: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Radiohead
Punk Division: The Velvet Underground, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Nirvana
New Wave Division: The Smiths, Talking Heads, U2, David Bowie
Roots Rock Division: The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, R.E.M., Bruce Springsteen
Beach Music Division: The Beach Boys, Bob Marley, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix

Marley and Radiohead are too different from the rest ("Beach Music"? Really?) for the genres to really click, but if the number were expanded (or even set in order to make the divisions make sense), I think the typical votes would be more interesting. It's always more fun to compare Aretha to Gaye than Aretha to the Flaming Lips.

Except that the point of this game is relegation and promotion. We need a top division and lower divisions, and which genre gets to be the "premier league"? And once the first round was done, all the genres would get jumbled anyway.

Oddly, I've been playing with something similar for a project I have in mind. Strict genre division is quite a bear, and I doubt we could ever come up with divisions that everyone is happy with. But I think I may have come up with a workable solution.

(Yes, the mad scientist bug may have bitten me again...I have a lot of wrinkles to iron out, but I may have come up with an album "tournament." Stay tuned. Heh heh...)

There's a reason I made fun of myself for those divisions.

Although if you don't think listening to Hendrix on the beach is awesome, you should try it again.

Looks like I was confused about the rules anyway, so this is moot, but I would be interested in a game that went from specific genres to a final.

Re: Test of a divisions game

Nice game idea.

Suggestions (I'm just brainstorming here):

1. Make divisions a bit bigger, like e.g. 8 artists? 2 artists would go up, 4 would go down. Points can be as is, so from 4 down to 1, 4 artists don't get points.

2. To replace the 8 (or 16 for bigger divisions) artists that will leave Division 3, nominate 8 (or 16) artists from a pool of 32 (or 64)?

Division 1
4p The Beatles
3p Bob Dylan
2p The Rolling Stones
1p David Bowie

Division 2:1
4p The Beach Boys
3p Bruce Springsteen
2p The Who
1p Led Zeppelin
