THE SMITHS. The day’s hardest pick; in fact, one of the hardest of the tourney so far. These are probably the two greatest and most influential English bands of the 1980’s.

PIXIES. Does my heart good to see them almost running the table here. They’ll need to.

BEASTIE BOYS. For all sorts of reasons, but let’s go with this one: Depeche Mode has not really done much noteworthy since 1991. The B-Boys, although they’ve declined, are still doing interesting stuff.

NIRVANA. Ouch ouch ouch.

Doing this I realize how little I care for this era's acclaimed material. I think that with the exception of REM there is no artist/band that i consider very good.

#1 Madonna: Right around my #5 artist ever, Hard Candy notwithstanding. She'd better get back to making great music!

#1 U2: I heard "All I Want Is You" the other day and really loved it. Why can't I love this band, though? I really like at least a dozen of their singles, but something makes me fall short of true fandom.
#1 Nirvana: They don't sit too comfortably with my favorites, but I can't help but really like them.
#2 Guns ‘N Roses: Nowhere near the Crüe for me, but still pretty good.
#2 The Stone Roses: Their debut is indeed impressive.
#1 The Beastie Boys: Lots of fun as hip hop should be in my book, but up against a real favorite.
#3 Red Hot Chili Peppers: Good band, but my estimation of them has decreased a bit in recent years.

#2 The Replacements: I imagine I'd rank them better if I was more familiar with their stuff. I still only know the big acclaimed favorite songs.
#1 Public Enemy: It Takes a Nation of Millions is pretty good, but I don't think it's close to being the best 80s album.
#2 Metallica: I imagine I'd like their really early stuff. Their more recent material (say 2000 onward) turns me off a bit, though.
#1 R.E.M.: I respect them, but just can't get into them.
#1 Pixies: I respect them, but not a single song of theirs has warmed me to them.
