Please have a look at the 2003 album and song lists before voting.
You can also vote for albums and songs outside the AM top 3000.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

We had the UNDERRATED ALBUMS POLL a few weeks ago. Trust me when it comes to years of underrated music 2003 for me is at the top of the list. This was the year critics got it absolutely WRONG. The top 20 and most of the list in general is just really sad looking because they left out so many underrated gems.

1. Camera Obscura- Underachievers Please Try Harder
2. Fountains of Wayne- Welcome Interstate Managers
3. Dress Bessy- Dressy Bessy

15. Super Furry Animals- Phantom Power

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

I need recommendations for this year

For the ones who don't know my tastes : not a big fan of indie rock and harcore electro, but gimme any other stuff ("classic" rock, folk, world, hip hop r&b metal etc)

acclaimed albums I already know (and like) : White Stripes, Outkast, R Wyatt, R Wainwright, Cat Powers

Dan M, I love your lists

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

I agree with Tim E that the critics list seems a little off for this year. I haven't heard much I like outside of The Meadowlands, but I can't wait to listen to Robert Wyatt, the Books, Grandaddy, Four Tet, Lightning Bolt, Prefuse 73, Super Furry Animals, and the Microphones. This year has a lot of promise.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

I think the critics got the top 2 right (Elephant is in my top ten all time), but after that were off.

Otherwise, yeah, 2003 seems like a 'Changing of the guard' year, and all the critics voted for the old guard.

I think 2003 is probably the year where me and the critics have the least in common. That said, EVERYONE SHOULD LISTEN TO THE MEADOWLANDS!!! It was rough when Cannibal Ox's Cold Vein didn't crack T10 of 2001. McLusky not even finishing T25 of 2002 was another blowout. But The Meadowlands should be perfect for so many people on this forum. Using the classic/cliche band + band = band formula, it's kind of like Arcade Fire + Pavement if that makes any sense. Surprise, Honeycomb is also quite good.

1. The Wrens - Meadowlands
2. The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone
3. The Postal Service - Give Up
4. Sufjan Stevens - Michigan
5. Jay Z - The Black Album
6. The White Stripes - Elephant
7. The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
8. The Exploding Hearts - Guitars Romantic
9. The Strokes - Room on Fire
10. Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain

Big seperation between my #1 and the rest of the list.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

This is my album list in the making

The Fabulous Trobadors' album is a recommendation for everyone, but I have to admit that if you don't understand French you'll miss the best part of it...

And again, your recommendations are welcome, but I have already scanned your lists above and found interesting things I should listen to.
Mid 00's are unknown territory for me

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

nicolas, I can't recommend anything outstanding to you, because 2003 for me is the worst album year of the last decade. Have not heard a single outstanding 2003 album, and if I look at my favourites, the Shins, Death Cab for Cutie and Josh Rouse, they have already been mentioned above.

I'll try the Trobadors' album, even though my French is poor (petit peu).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

No it is NOT the worst album year. If you're going by what the critics say yes this was a terrible year but there were so many great bands with at best maybe a cult following that nobody even paid attention to or just plain forgot about towards the end of the year. This was the year you really had to dig deep but if you did your researching you will find there were so many great albums that got lost along way and they deserved much better. This was one of the all time best years for UNACCLAIMED music so keep looking and you'll find plenty of classic albums from 03. I will keep defending 2003 with every fiber of my being until people realize how they did not need the critics to help find great music at least for this year.

Not everyone has the same taste though. Camera Obscura, Fountains of Wayne and B&S were alright but nothing special in my opinion, and I found Dress Bessy, Her Space Holiday and All Girl Summer Fun Band's output fairly mediocre. Haven't listened to Mull History Society or Rooney, but I think they wouldn't change my mind regarding the fact that this is a fairly weak year. "Sweet Liberty" is pretty awesome though.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

The problem a lot of people have is when it comes to indie POP there's usually a BIG difference of opinion as opposed to indie ROCK in which everyone tends to agree on what was groundbreaking. Like 2001 which a lot of people consider to be one of the best years in music was donminated by Alternative rock thanks to the revival of garage rock (thank you Gore Gore Girls)and the soaring popularity of Bjork and Radiohead. That continued all the way til the end of 2002 which is another year everyone seems to hold dear to their hearts (it wasn't like the vocoder/autotune era which refuses to go the hell away)2003 was more POP oriented than just about any year in the 00s and the bands that got great reviews to me were so/so at best like Death Cab/the Postal Service (guess I'm just not a fan of Ben's)and that Shins record could not hold a candle to Fountains of Wayne. Blur was ok, no where near their prime, the Rapture was pretty mediocre and the Darkness was just plain aweful. Looks like a lot of people agree with me but they also hate the bands I loved who were very much POP which is what I liked about the year. Fun, sunny catchy melodies and not much pretentious experimentation or overhyped, underproduced male songwriters which is what gets some people off. It's the differences in opinions that made this year so unique. It's all over the place and there's no clear agreement on who put out the best albums for the year but if you're a pop fan you know this year had some real treasures.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

Funny that people are saying this is the worst year. 2003 lacks a true classic, but 28 of those 31 albums are 3.5/5 stars for me. There isn't a 5 star but the first 13 are 4.5 or 4/5. I'd have to look but I doubt that there is any other year that I can name 13 4 star albums. I listened to a ton of music in 2003 but it was also a year after I graduated from college so there isn't a whole lot of nostalgia in my choices. I just think it was a year that a lot of really good music came out and gets underrated because it didn't have a classic.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm deep into Sufjan Stevens, an artist I toally missed, and it's a revelation to me. Illinois is 4.5 stuff to me, and Michigan is on its way to get a 4/5.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

Dan M, I love your lists

Thanks Nicolas. Coming from you, that's a nice compliment - you are one of my favourite list-makers on this forum and I always look out for your lists. I hope you will participate in the underrated albums poll - I could do with some recommendations.

Tim, I don't need any critics, so it is completely my own opinion and I am by no means an expert. To relax your fibers I will seek further to find unacclaimed 2003 treasures.

And I agree with John that in 2003 a lot of interesting albums were released.

Andre

And I agree with John that in 2003 a lot of interesting albums were released.

I don't know if 2003 really broke new grounds, but it is the year that I think indie (if you want to call it that) really exploded. It wasn't mainstream yet, but a lot of great bands who had been underground for many years all of the sudden had a bigger audience, and that opened up the doors for a lot of new bands. I don't think it's any coincidence that this is also when the iPod became a part of everyone's life.

I have thought it was released in 2004?

Anyway, that super furry animals song is great! I'd like to support it but I have not heard a full album from this year besides Snow Patrol, so I don't think I can vote.

Thanks Nicolas. Coming from you, that's a nice compliment - you are one of my favourite list-makers on this forum and I always look out for your lists. I hope you will participate in the underrated albums poll - I could do with some recommendations.

Well now that I have a little more time on my hands I'll try to join the underrated albums poll

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

I can't see that this year is worse than those before. Quite the contrary, it's hard to find a year nearby with so many promising new artists on the scene (The Sleepy Jackson, TV On The Radio, The Books, Dengue Fever, Fiery Furnaces, The National, The Kills, Sufjan Stevens, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Go! Team, ...). Maybe there is a lack of exciting hip-hop. Speaking of songs, this is my all-time favourite year (at least the top-5).

thank GOD it sounds nothing like 1981. That's another reason this year was so great. It was right before that irritating SYNTH revival which was almost as aweful as the 80s themselves. There were a few good twee/c86 acts from the late 80s and that fact that it was so popular again in 2003 and caused a small revival of the sound, only better, made the year so memorable for me. I can't think of any year that had better singles that 2003. If only it were as good as 2003 ever year.

i don't mean to generalize your taste, Tim, if that's what you're suggesting...i would consider most of the albums on your list to fall into those admittedly reductive categories...like i said, it's not really my area of interest, so you probably have better, more specific designations for them, and i'm happy to be corrected/informed...also, i'm not familiar w/ all girl summer fun band, stratford 4, rooney or dome...it was a genuine remark though, what important stuff went down in '03 in your opinion?

yeah, it was one of my more hurtful omissions to keep the final >>nj's-500-albums-of-the-2000s-collection<< as all-embracing as possible (= conclusion: two Broadcast recs in it are good enough). great album, though. and great year, too.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

Great singles, great pop songs. Stuff that was catchy and poppy, sugary but not lame like the songs you hear nowadays on car commercials. You remember the Gilmore Girls and how in the background the singers were always "La La La." To me thats how the songs you hear on the Toyata, Target and Old Navy (etc.) sound. These commercial bands made twee and indie pop so lame and this was a time when pop was just fun and sweet without sounding generic and with a soul. It was like a modern take on the Phil Spector era. Big sounds, sometimes girly, orchestral. The stuff I love was nothing out there or trying to break new ground. Her Space Holiday I thought was but they like making fun of critics with is why I think they praised the Postal Service (since their sound is so similar)just to stick it to HSH. It was just great and fun music to put a smile on your face. My 30 top singles plus about a couple dozen more will easily go down as some of my all time favorites ever. Lots the throughback sounds to the best eras of music (right before one of the very worst was revived with synthpop). To this day these songs are still stuck in my head.

So which of the following two statements is nearest to the point...

1. When you buy a car, the Gilmore Girls appear out of the blue and sing "La La La" at you - especially when you buy a Toyota.

2. Tim E is adamant that 2003 had some really underrated indie POP gems. Indie Pop groups like Camera Obscura, Dressy Bessy and Her Space Holiday were fun and refreshingly unpretentious but critics ignored them. Indie Pop singles were especially fabulous. (And thankfully 2003 sounded nothing like 1981 because there was no irritating synth.)

Oh dear. I was trying to be humorous (but obviously failed). Having read through Tim E's various comments, I seriously thought my point 2. was what he actually meant. Maybe I got it wrong and I'm just adding to the confusion. I've only heard 4 of Tim E's top 15 albums, so I'll do what I should have done from the start and keep my trap shut.

OK my whole Hyundai/Toyota statement went completely over your heads. OK the songs the chose to play on commercials tend to be these really lame, overtly, cutsie girlish songs that remind me of the background singers you hear on the show Gilmore Girls. These are the bands that lack the passion of the indie pop or twee bands that came out in 03. They sound like a generic version of these bands so when I see these commercials I long for the days of the precious and timeless indie pop era circa 2003.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

If I didn't like Camera Obscura's most recent album, should I still check out their 2003 album?

Generally I'm not into those bands like CO, Muse, and KoL which are mainstays on college/alternative stations.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

yeah I would. Their last album wasn't my favorite either. This one was produced by Stuart Murdoch so of course you got the Bell and Sebastian comparisons but you also hear influences by Phil Spector and the Sundays. If this were a B&S album if would definitely be my all time fave of theirs.

Why don't people here like KOL but they love the Hold Steady? I never got that. I know Gomez and Ocean Colour Scene had that 70s trad/prog sound but the word BRITPOP scared people off thanks to post Morning Glory Oasis and Robbie Williams. I never got why Williams didn't catch on either when even Pitchfork magazine was naming Justin Timberlake's Futuresex as one of the best albums of the decade. Williams made some great songs in the britpop era but never caught on in America or with the critics the way Timberlake did. Funny how music has this Yin/Yang affect between bands that have a similar sound.

2003 is a very interesting year; the lack of unanimity among critics and Amers is very exciting !!
Many idiosyncratic records including weird revivals albums such as The Darkness (or back to 1987), Josh Rouse (back to 1976 rather than '72)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

Slick
SONGS:
36. Metallica - St. Anger

Forgot it was 2003, would have made my bubbling list. Not the album though, muddled production and terrible drum sounds get annoying through the length of a full album (and this is a quite long album).

Anyway, I can't find Up In Flames and don't see what else I should listen to, so here is my album list :

1) Puppetmastaz - Creature Funk
2) Dizzee Rascal - Boy in da Corner
3) Outkast - Speakerboxx/the love below
4) Kings of Leon - Youth and Young Manhood
5) Horse the Band - R. Borlax
6) Les Fatals Picards - Droit de Véto
7) Four Tet - Rounds
8) Postal Service - The Postal Service
9) White Stripes, The - Elephant
10) Books, The - The Lemon of Pink
11) Shins, The - Chutes Too Narrow
12) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell
13) Muse - Absolution
14) Cat Power - You Are Free
15) Rapture, The - Echoes
16) Knife, The - Deep Cuts
17) Funeral For a Friend - Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation
18) Coral, The - Magic and Medicine
19) Unicorns, The - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone
20) Lightning Bolt - Beautiful Rainbow

Fountains of Wayne gave me a strange feeling, that's the first time I feel too old to enjoy an album. Like if I had discovered it 8 years ago I would have loved it but find it now very annoying, despite good guitar riffs.
On the other hand, Death Cab for Cutie is just a plain complete disappointment.
Feast of Wire peaks might top those of some of the albums in this list, but I found it a bit disappointing as a whole.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

Fountains of Wayne is a big disappointment for me; bland pop
My Morning Jacket sounds great, but you know my taste for country rock and the 70's
It's Grateful Dead reincarnated

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

Any recs? I will definitely listen to them.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2003

Welcome Interstate Managers is one of the catchiest records ever. I'm hearing everbody already starting to swoon over the new Bon Iver. I just don't get how dull, lofi, MALE songwriters get such a cult following and endless praise from critics when perfectly catchy and fun summery soundtrack records get tossed aside. It wasn't this way before especially the when britpop was so popular with Blur, Pulp and Oasis all topping EOY lists. Plus you had Magnetic Fields, Belle and Sebastian and Mercury Rev doing incredibly well with music lovers and critic alike. Now fun and bouncy records by the likes of Tennis and the Vaccines (plus dozens of records and songs from 03) just get pushed aside for the artsy folk or MALE lofi songwriters. In 03 I felt for every critically acclaimed record there was always a band far more obscure or underrated with a similar sound that was just as good or better. YYYs had Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Shins had Fountains of Way and the Postal Service had Her Space Holiday.

Hey Nicolas. Ya, its certainly an interesting listen.
I've been very quiet for awile. I decided last year to apply to go back to college and do a 4 year graduate course in medicine. I hate my job and see no career prospects (and you're never to old to change). So I've spent many long evenings with my head in the books after work preparing for an absolute behemoth of an exam I was required to sit As a result pretty much everything else in life took a back seat.

The good news is my results finally came this morning and my score put right at the very top of the pile (top 1 or 2 percent). So come september I'm starting a whole new terrifying and exhilerating chapter in my life

These two albums were in my top 20 too and I'm glad to know that I'm not completely out of sync with the French AMF'ers. No love for Jean-Louis Murat's Lilith yet. I guess 2 long CDs of similar music can be a bit much. Personally I think you can never have too much of a good thing (heck, I've sat through Joanna Newsom's 3-CD Have One On Me more often than is healthy). Thanks for the other French albums in your list, Romain. I'm busy listening to them now.

Yes, Dan, thanks for your interest in French music, especially from a UK resident (but you're not English, that's probably why ). The general level of French music has significantly increased since the late 90s, and in the 2000s you'll see many French albums in our lists. In 2003, except the Fabulous Trobador's masterpiece (but maybe this album is a little too French, i.e. if you don't understand the brilliant lyrics you'll find the music a little repetitive), my (under construction) list doesn't hold any Frog record.
Benjamin Biolay is not my cup of tea, I love the musician but can't stand the singer, Emilie Simon makes excellent arrangements but i'm not a fan of her songs, Murat is OK (but I also have problems with his vocals) and I haven't heard M yet, nor any other contenders (like Arthur H or jazzmen Belmondo brothers).

BTW, here's my list in progress .

Concerning songs, I don't use Spotify anymore, because I now have a free subscription to Deezer that goes with my cellphone package. i don't know if it's available in other countries, but here is the link to my own 2003 playlist

Re: My favourite Spanish song of 2003: Deluxe's "Que no"

Mainstream vs. indie. Really? Maybe in the beginning indie rock was a minoritary style that, after the success of Nirvana's "Nevermind", could seem for a while a threat for established artists and styles. But, like a thousand times before, the sounds and faetures of indie rock were incorporated to all kinds of acts like any other trend. That allowed the existence of artists like Deluxe, the project of Galician singer-songwriter Xoel López, not mainstream enough to get the status of a rock star, not indie enough to get support from specialized critics but appealing enough to sell more than 20.000 records of his second album If Things Were to Go Wrong (2003). This second album marked the transition to the typical indie pop sung in English to the more mature style sung in Spanish of his fourth (and probably best) album Fin de un viaje infinito (The End of an Endless Trip, 2005). His second album contained two songs in Spanish, including Que no (Say No), the indie single that flirted with mainstream. Or it was the opposite?

QUE NO
Composer: Xoel López
Performer: DELUXE
First release: 2003 ("If Things Were to Go Wrong" album)
Length: 3’50”

Ya sé que no es exactamente
lo que debería de ser,
pero me río al pensar
que crees que voy a ceder.
Sé que es más fácil quedarme sentado
y esperar que pase el dolor
que oír en la radio mi voz
decirle a la gente que no.

No intentes hacerme cambiar,
no me pidas ese favor,
siento decirte

No intentes hacerme cambiar,
no me pidas ese favor,
siento decirte
que no, que no, que no, que no,
que no, que no, que no, que no,
que no, que no, que no.
siento decir que no.

No intentes hacerme cambiar,
no me pidas ese favor,
siento decirte
que no, que no, que no, que no,
que no, que no, que no, que no,
que no, que no, que no.

No intentes hacerme cambiar,
no me pidas ese favor,
siento decirte
que no, que no, que no, que no,
que no, que no, que no, que no,
que no, que no, que no, que no,
que no, que no, que no, que no,
que no, que no, que no,
siento decir que no.

SAY NO

I know it's not exactly
what it should be,
but it makes me laugh to think
that you wait for me to give up.
I know it's easier to sit down
and wait for the pain to cease
that listen to my voice on the radio
telling no to the people.

Please don't make me change,
don't ask me that,
I'm afraid I got to
say no, say no, say no, say no,
say no, say no, say no, say no,
say no, say no, say no.

I know that maybe it's not
the right time and place,
but letting it pass
would be a sad way to end.
I know you think that's strange,
that it couldn't last,
but you will fall at the end
and maybe I will not be there.

Please don't make me change,
don't ask me that,
I'm afraid I got to
say no, say no, say no, say no,
say no, say no, say no, say no,
say no, say no, say no,
I'm afraid I got to say no.

Please don't make me change,
don't ask me that,
I'm afraid I got to
say no, say no, say no, say no,
say no, say no, say no, say no,
say no, say no, say no.

Please don't make me change,
don't ask me that,
I'm afraid I got to
say no, say no, say no, say no,
say no, say no, say no, say no,
say no, say no, say no, say no,
say no, say no, say no, say no,
say no, say no, say no,
I'm afraid I got to say no.
