Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

RADIOHEAD ~~~ I can still remember back in my college radio days reviewing Pablo Honey for the 1st time and instantly falling in love with this band, 18 years later they are still putting out awesome albums...
TRIBE ~~~ My all-time favorite hip-hop act who was front and center during the Golden Age of Hip-Hop...
SNOOP ~~~ Never could get into Ms. Polly Jean Harvey, most of Snoop's shit sux, but I can listen to 'Doggystyle' all the way through. I can't say the same for any of PJ's records...
THE VERVE ~~~ It is too bad most people only know this band for "Bittersweet Symphony" and nothing else, cuz the nothing else part is really, really good...
ARCADE FIRE ~~~ Has their been a better band in the past 7 years???
RAGE ~~~
PORTISHEAD ~~~ Toughest choice of the day, I changed my vote 3 times in less than a minute...
MASSIVE ATTACK ~~~ A potential 3 round matchup of the 2 biggest trip-hop acts facing off

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

#1 Radiohead
#5 Daft Punk
#3 PJ Harvey
#7 The Verve - for a minute,I was thinking it must have been the Verve Pipe - how the hell they can be ranked so much lower than DMB?
#1 Arcade Fire
#4 Elliott Smith
#11 Garbage
#2 Massive Attack

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

#1 Radiohead
#5 Daft Punk
#3 PJ Harvey

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

#1 Radiohead
#5 Daft Punk (wow, really close one, very hard to vote against Tribe)
#3 PJ Harvey
#7 The Verve (why couldn't Tribe be up against DMB?)
#1 Arcade Fire
#4 Elliott Smith
#3 Portishead
#2 Massive Attack

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

Radiohead
Daft Punk
PJ Harvey
The Verve (I like both, but the Verve just a bit more)
Arcade Fire
Elliot Smith (easy, I think Rage is overrated)
Portishead
Massive Attack

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

#1 Radiohead
#4 A Tribe Called Quest (difficult choice)
#3 PJ Harvey (well that one was easier)
#7 The Verve
pass (I've listened to more AF but I'm not really sure they're better overall)
#5 Rage Against The Machine
#3 Portishead
#2 Massive Attack

Portishead vs. Massive Attack will be a monster!

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

#1 Radiohead
#4 A Tribe Called Quest
Other than a few songs on Discovery Daft Punk is pretty monotonous.
#3 PJ Harvey
Everything I ever liked by Snoop Dogg turned out to be ripped from somebody else's classic.
#7 The Verve
#1 Arcade Fire
Though Alanis is over-hated because of her mainstream success.
#4 Elliott Smith
Rage: "LOOK AT ME I'M SUCH A REBEL!"
#3 Portishead
#2 Massive Attack
Really?

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

Many, many acts I love today. And a couple of very hard choices.

Radiohead (Oh, this hurts. YYYs are one of the finest bands of the last ten years, trading equally on musical chops, experimentalism, and sheer rock ‘n’ roll.)

Daft Punk (Not that hard a choice. Tribe is nice, but Daft Punk offers up the smartest and grooviest dance music of anyone this side of James Murphy.)

PJ Harvey (Not a hard choice at all. Snoop’s OK, but PJ is a genius and still cookin’.)

The Verve (Not even a choice. And I don’t even like the Verve that much…there are 11 or 12 of today’s 16 artists I would have taken over them.)

Arcade Fire (Quebec over Ontario. If nothing else, Win & co. have Alanis vastly outnumbered.)

Elliott Smith

Portishead (If I’m honest, I love these bands about equally. In fact, if I’m looking for something to listen to for fun, I’m more likely to pull out Shirley and her svengali Butch Vig. But Portishead is…how to put it?...both wider and deeper. And they’ve had more real staying power.)

Massive Attack (I probably said this last round, but I hold no truck with hating on Justin Timberlake. He’s the same sort of act as Madonna or Elvis Presley, he is. And he has some fantastic songs. I’m in my forties, and I’ll leave reflexive bashing of pretty pop stars to the disaffected kids.)

(I realize that’s a long defense of someone I didn’t vote for. I’m just saying keep an open mind, people.)

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

#1 Radiohead
#5 Daft Punk
#3 PJ Harvey
#2 Dave Matthews Band
#1 Arcade Fire
pass
#11 Garbage (tough call)
pass

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

#8 Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Fairly easy choice for such a big upset. I dig OK Computer and Kid A, but none of them can come close to "Maps" or "Zero" for me.
#5 Daft Punk: Tough call here.
#3 PJ Harvey: I like Snoop, but PJ takes it pretty handily.
#7 The Verve: The Verve advances against one of 2 artists present today that are among my bottom 50 artists ever.
#1 Arcade Fire: I've soured on Arcade Fire a lot because of The Suburbs, but I never had to sour on Alanis, as I never liked her that much.
#4 Elliott Smith: I only know a few songs, though.
#11 Garbage: Tough choice. I know a little by both, but not a whole lot.
#2 Massive Attack: I hate JT's music and all that he represents.

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

#1 Radiohead
#5 Daft Punk - OUCH. I adore both. Both have a great catalog, and each have an album in my all-time top 10. I currently love Discovery a little more than Low End Theory, so DP gets the difficult nod.
#3 PJ Harvey
#2 Dave Matthews Band
#1 Arcade Fire
#4 Elliott Smith
#3 Portishead
#7 Justin Timberlake - Massive Attack is overrated.

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

1. Radiohead has been just amazing over the years. Putting out album after album of great music. I love them.
#5 Daft Punk was the go to music in college. This was a tough one because Tribe was right there during the best of hip hop.
#6 Polly Jean Harvey has some great songs, but never a great album in my mind. Snoop's Doggystyle is an amazing album.
#DMB although the Verve has had some great songs.
#9 Alanis. I cannot stand Arcade Fire
#5 RATM has been just great over the years. The concerts are even better
#11 Garbage is the exact opposite of its name.
#7 Justin Timberlake is the modern day Jesus when it comes to music. He does it all and puts out great music.

Re: UMT2: 2nd Round #5

I respected Snoop a lot more before I heard Atomic Dog. (And Coolio a lot more before I heard Pastime Paradise).

90's rappers needed to use more of their own ideas.
