pass (kinda like both, not fan of either)
#3 Violent Femmes (their self title is one of my favourite album of the early 80s, maybe even my favourite)
#6 Dexy’s Midnight Runners
#7 Dinosaur Jr.
#2 Guns ‘N Roses
Pixies ~~~ No brainer...
Queensryche ~~~ 2 great albums vs. a couple catchy pop tunes...
Janes Addiction ~~~ Another band with 2 great albums against a really underappreciated band with a lot of really good songs...
Grandmaster Flash ~~~ let's not forget the Furious Five...
Femmes ~~~
Ratt ~~~ How about an upset from a guilty pleasure, what can I say, I grew up in the 80's and went through a hair metal phase...
Dino Jr. ~~~ Always liked this band, Sinead had a moment or two, that was it...
GNR ~~~ Still remember listening to Appetite probably every day for a year straight on my badass walkman...
#1 Pixies (Their upset of Elvis was the best thing that happened in the first iteration of the UMT.)
Pass.
#5 Jane’s Addiction (I like the Fixx, but my girlfriend would kill me if I didn’t vote for Perry & co.)
#4 Grandmaster Flash (And my socialist friends WILL kill me for not taking Billy Bragg. I like him, but Flash is fast.)
#3 Violent Femmes
#6 Dexys Midnight Runners (For the record: There is no apostrophe in Dexys Midnight Runners, or in Lifes Rich Pageant. But there IS an apostrophe in Jane’s Addiction. And an umlaut in Queensrÿche. Good night.)
Pass - I have an equal distaste for both.
#9 Culture Club: I like "Silent Lucidity", but Culture Club has a lot of great singles.
#5 Janes Addiction: Although I prefer Porno for Pyros, this is a relatively easy choice.
#4 Grandmaster Flash: The Message is one of my favorite hip hop albums. Don't Try This at Home is the only Billy Bragg album I know, but it doesn't come close.
#3 Violent Femmes: Easy win.
#6 Dexy’s Midnight Runners: As much as I like hair metal, this is also an easy win.
Pass - don't know Dinosaur Jr.
#2 Guns ‘N Roses: Easiest win of the tournament?
Pass (a couple of one-hit wonders doesn't do it for me)
Hi W,
"10 common statements that unfortunately turn you instantly into an unschooled flipside filler fuck on AMF"... congrats, yours on #4!
half-kidding, son, just listen to more music..
Ouch. Anyway, bro, I took your advice and listened to a more extensive selection by both artists. If it is not too late to change my pick, I decide that I will vote Dexys in the Dexys vs. Ratt matchup. I now promise never to use the three forbidden words here again.
Interestingly enough, Moonbeam and I are the only voters so far to indicate that we see this pick differently that you.
I'm not a big UB40 fan, but find the few Pixies songs that I enjoy vastly outnumbered by those that
I skip after 30-60 seconds (or even less time) because they are so annoying to my ears.
My guess is that the Pixies are one of the bands that was heavily influenced by VU's drone and noise innovations. I don't recall any screeching violas from the Pixies, but I could have easily missed them.
Most of the people voting for Grandmaster Flash probably only know 'The Message' as well. Not that there is much else,Bragg should have won easily...
Please don't forget "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel." I'll admit that when I voted for him, I also thought he was the DJ on "White Lines," but it turns out I was mistaken.
