Vote for your winners, results will be posted tomorrow:
#1 Led Zeppelin vs. #16 Dusty Springfield
#8 Frank Zappa vs. #9 Roy Orbison
#5 Joni Mitchell vs. #12 The Impressions
#4 Otis Redding vs. #13 Tim Buckley
#3 Simon & Garfunkel vs. #14 Three Dog Night
#6 Cream vs. #11 Sam And Dave
#7 Grateful Dead vs. #10 Hank Williams
#2 Bob Marley vs. #15 Steve Miller Band
#1 Led Zeppelin
#9 Roy Orbison (tough - I'd prefer to listen to Orbison normally, but Zappa is a genius with one of rock music's most illustrious back catalogues. I feel like Zappa should get the vote, and yet I'm voting for Orbison)
#5 Joni Mitchell
#4 Otis Redding
#3 Simon & Garfunkel
#6 Cream
#10 Hank Williams
#2 Bob Marley
#1 Led Zeppelin
#9 Roy Orbison
#12 The Impressions - A blow out for me. The Impressions are severely underrated.
#4 Otis Redding
#3 Simon & Garfunkel
#6 Cream
#7 Grateful Dead - I hold the likely unpopular opinion that the Dead were, collectively, better songwriters than Williams.
#2 Bob Marley
#1 Led Zeppelin (not that obvious though)
#8 Frank Zappa (and this was really hard)
#5 Joni Mitchell
#13 Tim Buckley (A year ago I would easily vote for Tim. I think I am about to change my mind but it's more fun this way.)
#3 Simon & Garfunkel
#11 Sam And Dave
#10 Hank Williams (Guys, this is an important vote!!!!!!!!!!!!)
#2 Bob Marley
#1 Led Zeppelin
#8 Frank Zappa
Orbison: Great singer, I dislike his songwriting.
#5 Joni Mitchell
#13 Tim Buckley
pass (Never heard of Three Dog Night)
#11 Sam And Dave
#10 Hank Williams
(My dad's obsession with Grateful Dead ruined them for me.)
#2 Bob Marley
#1 Led Zeppelin (Dusty is a very strong #16 seed. I understand why Led Zep is great, but I’m never going to dig them. I think they deserve another round or two, but I’m putting on the brakes once they’re up against Otis.)
#9 Roy Orbison (Frank was sort of an avant-garde entrepreneur whom I respect more than enjoy. Roy only had four or five great songs, but he had one of the most iconic voices ever. And I like his goofiness more than Frank's goofiness. And he was a fellow Texan.)
#5 Joni Mitchell (Another tough choice, but less so than the above two.)
#4 Otis Redding (Wow…fourth matchup in a row between two very worthy opponents. Have to go with Otis. He WAS soul music.)
#3 Simon & Garfunkel (@BillAdama: O lucky man, to have never heard of Three Dog Night.)
#11 Sam and Dave (Love these guys. I have to admit that Cream was massively influential—probably more so than is generally appreciated. It’s just that I find that influence mostly malefic.)
#10 Hank Williams (Easiest upset pick of the UMT thus far.)
#2 Bob Marley (Don’t feel strongly about either Marley or Miller. If I was using Slick’s logic from yesterday, I’d have to pick Steve Miller, since the chicks dig his stuff. But apparently, that kind of logic leads to Howlin’ Wolf losing to effing Chicago, so I think I’ll pass.)
#1 The Mighty Zepp
#9 Roy Orbison - I HATE ZAPPA!!!
#12 The Impressions - Very, Very underrated band
#4 Otis was the man and will always be the man
#14 3DN - This is mor of an anti-S&G vote than anything else.
#6 Cream - Really close matchup, but if I listed the top 10 songs from these 2 artists, Cream would have 7.
#10 Hank - all day, he was great and I hate the dead and would only vote for them over Zappa.
#2 Marley - Rounds out a loaded bracket.
Zeppelin
Orbison
pass (to close, and I don't know enough by either to make a solid choice)
Otis (If it were Jeff, It'd be different)
S&G (Three Dog Night's pretty good though)
Cream (ditto my above comment)
Pass
Marley
