Wow Stephen is ranking pretty high, so far in both songs and albums lists. So far is also pretty high on mine, but i need to listen to other records first. He might get in this poll what he didn't got in 2001. 2001 looks like a more diverse year in terms of album picks than 2000.

Not one vote yet for The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox?!?! I implore everyone to check this album out. I first discovered it after looking at nj's all-time list (a treasure trove of great albums) and since then it's grown to be one of my favorite albums. It really is a spectacular piece of work: a hip-hop album that's singular both in its production and word play. I'm not sure what the rest of my list will look like, but I know The Cold Vein will top it.
I like this album a lot too, even though it's long to the point of being a tad overwhelming. "Iron Galaxy" is a lock for my top ten songs.
On the same lines (and coincidentally another nj favorite, though I didn't discover it through his list), I hope Super Furry Animals' Rings Around the World gets more consideration. What a great mix between noise and melody.

I think it's debatable in which year Hayling came out. Most of the sources rate it as a 2002 release, and RYM is contradicting itself here. 2001, the year I started elementary. It was also the first year of the 21st Century and the new millenium (not 2000). And of course, not even a week into school, a great tragedy struck this nation not even 100 miles from my home.
We also beckoned in a new president here in the states, Geroge W. Bush. 2001 was also the year we lost music legends George Harrison and Joey Ramone.

Hi Nicolas, a 2001 recommendation for you might be Otis Taylor's White African. IMO one of the best Blues albums of the '00s.

I need a judgement call... apparently the version of N.E.R.D.'s "In Search Of..." was released in the U.S. in 2002 and was re-recorded with more rock-oriented backing tracks.

In my college rock days, this was probably the first R&B album that convinced me that other genres could be a little off-kilter and interesting, while including a dance beat that made it more fun for parties.

Thanks to the voters who recommended Aesop Rock's Labor Days. After two listens it's already one of my favorite hip-hop albums of the 00s, and I will join several others in voting for the song "Daylight" in addition to the album.
I'm going away for a week and I haven't spent as much time with this year as I usually do, but 2001 was a good year so I'm quite happy with my list anyway.

Donosti (Basque name) or San Sebastián (Spanish name) is a lovely city by the sea (see) on the north coast of Spain. Amidst the politically convoluted Basque Country, Donosti managed to maintain a serene, distinguished and noble bearing. The blue seas and the grey skies of Donosti gave also name to a style, the "Donosti Sound", a subtle and fragile pop sound that tried to capture the beauty of the simplicity. A bunch of bands with "coincidence of adjectives: naïve, polite, lazy, delicate" in words of Guillermo Z del Águila for Rockdelux. The pioneers of the style were Aventuras de Kirlian on the late 80s but the Donosti Sound blossomed in the mid 90s with bands like Family, Le Mans, Daily Planet, El Joven Bryan and, of course, La Buena Vida ("The Good Life"). The influences of these bands included pop sounds from the 60s (Love, Beach Boys) to the 80s (Smiths, Orange Juice), with echoes of easy listening (Burt Bacharach), French pop (Serge Gainsbourg) and bossa (Astrud Gilberto). These bands shared also record labels (Siesta and Elefant) and the same cover art designer (the awesome Javier Aramburu, see here).
La Buena Vida was the band of that scene with a longer and most succesful career. Their fifth album Hallelujah! (2001) included my favourite song from them, Qué nos va a pasar (What's Gonna Happen With Us). A bittersweet song about the end of a relationship. About that point "when the conversation decline". About the uncertainity, about not knowing "what’s gonna happen with us". About the desolation (I will hide, now that you leave, I won’t go out anymore; what’s the use if I can’t see you). About the resignation that came with the last refrain (when time passes by, you will find someone else and you will forget me, that’s the usual thing, even if it maddens us, it’s always like that, and we try hard to conceal). About the disenchantment, necessary in singer Irantzu Valencia's own words: "It's the disenchantment necessary to become enchanted with something or someone again, you need to go through this disenchantment before".

Bleed American was one of the first albums I ever purchased with my own money. It's definitely the only one of these albums I actually had heard and enjoyed in the year 2001! My placement here isn't just a nostalgia trip either; these songs hold up pretty well.
I'm surprised almost no one else has placed Leaves Turn Inside You. Also Hot Shots II is almost as good as The Three EPs and deserves more acclaim. As for the most overrated of the year? The Blueprint. And Toxicity; I can't stand System of a Down.
