Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

Henrik
Yes, I suggest that we continue in the '00s poll with 100 albums and songs in the final. But next year when we probably do the '90s again we could have perhaps 15 albums from each year and from the 150 pick a definitive top 100. It would be a little more thrilling with the countdown if we then start with 100, 99 and so on, and after a while everyone will start worrying whether their personal favorites will make the top 50 or not the top 100 at all.

As it is now, when the first albums are presented in the final (say 100-80), I'm thinking that those are the albums that shouldn't have been there.

This is just a suggestion so everyone should take it as such, but is there any reason to wait on a 150 album/song format? I think that's a great idea and would make the revealing of the results more fun.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

Here's an idea I want to put out there.

We could compile two separate lists. One where we take the top 10 point-getters of each year, and one while we take the top 10 that are not in AM's top 200 of the decade.

That way we'll end up with one list of 100 albums everybody has heard, and one list of 100 albums fewer people have heard, and vote each separately.

That discussion was over 100 vs. 200 albums. What Henrik was suggesting is nominating 150 albums so there is some suspense when the results for the top 100 are revealed, starting next year with the 90s poll. I was just wondering why we couldn't introduce that format this year. I think it would be more interesting if we didn't know which albums made the top 100 in the final vote.

I don't know why we're having so much discussion about changing a formula we've been using successfully for every other decade. Let's at least stick with it to the end and do something different next time around if that's what people want. Why is everyone trying to fix something that ain't broke?

Well, the formula we've been using works, but it gives too major an advantage to the albums everybody has heard. That's why I suggest we have a separate final vote for the less well known albums.

Re: My favourite Spanish song of 2000: Nu Tempo's "Islas"

A round trip overseas. Nothing as natural as the crossed influences in music. The colonization of American and African countries by Europeans is a story of brutality and genocide, that's undeniable, but it's also a story of cultural interchange. The music that the Europeans brought was reinterpreted by the natives (or by the slaves) and this cultural collision created fascinating new styles (in fact jazz was born when African Americans took the instruments of a brass band and began to play it with their own style).
And then the ebb came. The Portuguese musicians showed proudly Brazilian influences, the English psychedelia used Hindi instruments and French music was permeated by North African music (to use examples of three different continents). Given the rich music traditions in Latin America (Cuban son, Mexican bolero or Argentinean tango to mention a few) Spain was not going to be the exception to the rule, and music coming from Latin America has always been favourites of Spanish audiences, from Antonio Machín to Shakira.
But surprisingly the Spanish musicians rarely embraced those warm sounds coming from our brothers overseas. In fact sometimes it was the opposite, Latin American singers tried to emulate detestable Spanish singers like (argh) Julio Iglesias. Instead looking to the West most of the Spanish musicians preferred to look to the North, to the European scene, trying to shake off atavistic complexes of cultural delay. Of course there were exceptions like the easy-listening orchestras of the 1940s and 1950s (Xavier Cugat style) and mainly the "rumba" of the 1960s and 1970s, a style born in Barcelona that mixed Spanish flamenco and Cuban son, played by great musicians that ranged from the popular (Peret) to the intellectual (Gato Pérez).
The pop musicians began to dig into this goldmine in the mid 1980s with bands as Radio Futura, Los Coyotes or Los Mestizos. Fronting the latter band was Juanjo Javierre, a musician that commanded many bands, especially Los Mestizos in the 80s, Soul Mondo in the 90s and Nu Tempo in the 00s. A personal project mostly based in down tempo and "cold" electronica but adding some musicians that got with them the Caribbean heat: the Cuban singer Ludmila Mercerón, the gypsy percussionist Tahití Giménez and the Cuban trumpet player Ángel Beltrán. They released an album in 2000 called Rumbo a nuevas islas (Bound to New Islands) that included a bolero from Néstor 'Lupita' Nazareno (also collaborating on vocals) that exemplified the Cuba-Spain connection. Joan Pons for Rockdelux: "Echoed by a distant trumpet, Juanjo Javierre docks in Cuba and get himself drenched in mature rum to heal the soul wounds. The Innerzone Orchestra lost in the Caribbean. Mr. Fingers warping to a modern bolero with spare but definitive lyrics".

Re: In the Year 2000

Only one day left to vote.

I like also Henrik's suggestion about new rules. It would fix almost every bad sides of this almost perfect game. (albums/songs released in ”stronger” year wouldn't suffer anymore etc.).
But 2010 songs poll proved that sometimes 150 songs is too much (I guess it was the main reason why there were way less voters in the second round than in the first one.)
It also looks that most of the forumers do prefer the current rules. So if there won't show up shortly new supporters of new rules (by Henrik) in the forum, I think the debate is over and we will stick in the current rules.

And love for U2 of 00's is also big surprise to me also.

Well, I've thought a bit about that.
I like the 150 rules, but I also know for having done a poll myself that in some years, albums between 11 and 15 had very few support and were only personal favorite of a few people. Is that a good thing or not, I don't know.
And the one hand, I will probably already know most of the top 10 albums of this decade, which is the one I know the best (and well, the top 10 of the 90s year too I guess) so for this year and next year, the best way for me to be sure to make discoveries would be 150 albums rule, and that would also increase the suspens on the final top 100 indeed.
Of course I'm in favor or ranking all the albums, not just the top 100 among them, mostly because whether we have 100, 150 or 200 albums, I want to make sure that, let's say, Screamadelica is at the bottom of my list.
So sure, on the 80s or 70s poll, listening to all albums will be harder, but you have to remember that the scoring rule kind of erase the problem, by giving average score to albums you have not heard, you can find in every decade polls (and in the 00s movies poll too), some items that did very well despite rather low amount of votes.

So, I don't know if the seemed clear, but I'm in favor of the 150 rule !
Plus this way it would be more likely that Relationship of Command makes the cut ^^

Re: In the Year 2000

Nassim

Of course I'm in favor or ranking all the albums, not just the top 100 among them, mostly because whether we have 100, 150 or 200 albums, I want to make sure that, let's say, Screamadelica is at the bottom of my list.

Screamadelica rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every album in top 16 can still reach the top ten. They are very close to each other (actually the gap between #10 and #18 is 67 points so even #18 has still some chances.

[20] Badly Drawn Boy | Once Around the Block

The single was actually released in 1999 (and I even voted this song in our 1999 poll).

Swap it out for "The Rising" then, even though it won't make a difference. Badly Drawn Boy was one of my favorite discoveries from doing this poll; that album is ridiculously good.

So... about this 15 albums a year rule ? No ? Still not ? Dammit...

I don't think I have ever been that disappointed by a forum poll result
My bet would still go to Boy In Da Corner for highest ranked album not to reach the final round though.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

Mmm, excuse me for bein' an ass, but I'm afraid I have to side with Nassim. It's a decent list, but the top 20 is almost the same as the AM list of 2000.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

I still think it would be a good idea to have two separate final ballots, the second of which takes the top ten outside the top 100 of the decade on the AM list that did not make the first one.

Like, one for the albums everybody already knew about, and one for the more obscure ones.

Terrible, terrible News. I heard the whole top 10 and they are solid to great songs, but I don't see how these two could not qualify.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

We are far more to vote for the 2000s so the more we are the less original the final list will be.

The results are just fine in my view.

I was especially pleased to see "If You're Gone" make the top 25

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

I don't really see the problem either, it's a fine list. And two Radiohead songs in the top 10 is more than enough; happy the best song (by far) they ever made is considered their best from Kid A by this forum as well.

That said, BillAdama's idea doesn't sound too bad to me.

Gotta side with Nassim here. Probably just a pipe dream at this point though.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

I wish some albums were higher, but fine list overall and it is the forum consensus. That are 8 other years coming! Let's go guys

That's true. I would have preferred that some of the songs and albums on positions 11-15 could have been in the Top 10. But that happened to me on every poll so far. However I'm glad that "One More Time" qualified, I didn't realized that it was released on 2000, I was planning to vote for it on 2001.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

Yes, the albums that made the list are really good albums.

The problem isn't the albums that qualified: The problem is the ones that didn't have a realistic chance to qualify because fewer people know they exist.

I don't see the problem. If a few of our less well-known gems don't qualify during this poll, perhaps the benefit will be that the folks who were unaware of these gems may now want to take note and listen to them.

However, condescending articulation will not encourage such listenings. Instead, I would recommend that for those who are disappointed that their gems didn't make the cut - they should actually describe the wonders of the songs that they so much admire so that others become motivated to listen to these gems again.

Just sayin'

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

No, but having an extra, separate ballot that includes those lesser known gems will encourage such listens.

I agree and think that the separate ballot for the lesser know gems is an excellent idea.

I don't yet understand how these "lesser known" items would be selected.

Good idea, you should run it.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

It seems like everyone complaining about the results voted for at least half of the albums and songs that made it. We have full control of the results. If there's a highly acclaimed album that's not deserving, then don't vote for it. Or listen to a bunch of new albums during the month instead of just voting based on what you already know.

Anyway, whenever we have AM polls I discover most new albums/songs through the individual lists, not the consensus list. Also, we already have two polls running right now to try and identify lesser-known gems (Unacclaimed songs and Moderate albums). I don't see how what is being proposed is significantly different from those.

Are you volunteering me?

Moderate will be over by then, so I'd be willing.

That's the thing Jackson, the acclaimed albums that make it are deserving. They just have home field advantage over the other deserving ones.

As for how we select the lesser known ones, I suppose we'd just have to pick a number to be the AM rank cutoff.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

BillAdama, if you want to run an less acclaimed top 100 of the decade that's surely fine with me, I will definitely participate. Not that you need my word though, this is Petri's poll, but I don't see why he should have anything against your idea either.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

Wow this is Egypt in this thread !! A revolution has started.

Well, a lot of people are new to the decade polls. 10 albums per year is hard, but trust me it was as hard for the 1952-1999 polls we made these past years.

A solution could be a recommendation thread as we did for the previous polls.
At the beginning of each month, everyone posts the songs he thinks are lesser known, so that everybody has time to listen to them and (why not ?) to include them.
That's why I always post my definitive lists in the end : I belive that I have a lot to learn from other people's lists.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

Um, sorry for making confusing posts, but I really agree with what nicolas said. I thought again about BillAdama's idea and I'm not all that positive anymore. Discover lesser-known music is not the main purpose of the decade polls, we have other games for that. And as for my own participation I would probably throw in a ballot but I'm sure I won't have time to listen to the albums I haven't already heard as the main top 100 will be my priority.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

take the first 15 albums, my 2 favorites will be in it, I will stop complaining

and really, suspens in the final top 100 would be better

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

BillAdama
No, but having an extra, separate ballot that includes those lesser known gems will encourage such listens.

If you want to run this alternative poll I'll probably participate to it. (I'll send excel sheets to Henrik that he can release them in the forum.)
But I don't see how we select the albums. If we just take #11-#20 (I'm actually more familiar with those ones than some top 10 albums like U2) what we will have: probably a lot less acclaimed albums by big artists (late 00's albums by Coldplay, White Stripes, Strokes, U2 etc.)
If we select the albums that have the best average score among those who voted these hidden gems (excluding albums that got only one vote) what we have. Let's see (rank. artist -album (average points, votes)
1. Air – The Virgin Suicides ( 37,5 , 2 )
(2.) Radiohead-Kid A ( 36,26 , 38 )
2. Linkin Park-Hybrid Theory ( 32,5 , 2 )
3. Steely Dan - Two Against Nature ( 30,33 , 3 )
4. Day One - Ordinary Man ( 30 , 2 )
5. The Be Good Tanyas - Blue Horse ( 30 , 2 )
6. Quasimoto – The Unseen ( 29 , 2 )
(8.) U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind ( 28,71 , 14 )
('9.) OutKast - Stankonia ( 27,55 , 29 )
7. Los Planetas - Unidad de desplazamiento ( 27,5 , 2 )
8. The Cure - BloodFlowers ( 27 , 4 )
9. The Smashing Pumpkins / MACHINA/The Machines of God ( 26,5 , 2 )
(13.) PJ Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea ( 25,93 , 29 )
(14.) Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP ( 25,55 , 20 )
10. Mojave 3 - Excuses For Travellers ( 23,67 , 3 )
Hybrid Theory: The best selling album of the year in the whole world (or at least best selling rock album). Old favorites (Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Steely Dan). Popular film score (I guess at least 15 of the voters have heard it).
I admit that the list above is in a way more interesting in some parts (couble of bands I haven't heard of before) than the top 10. But still we have two polls which deal with lesser known music right now... (Sorry, I haven't got time to participate to them).

I'm a bit surprised that this idea has got more support than Henrik's (in my opinion) great idea.
Hope I didn't sound rude.

Sorry, I should have read more carefully.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

I agree the 150 album idea will probably accomplish much of what my idea would also accomplish.

And I had a different idea for a new music discovery game after Moderate was done anyway.

What would be perfect is if we could somehow come up with a system in the qualifying rounds so you're not explicitly voting against every album you haven't heard, but I don't know how to do that.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

You'd have to include some sort of variable in the point calculation that would decrease the amounts of points the more votes an album gets. I.e. the first #1 vote gives 100 points and the second #1 gives 95 points, etc. It would make things a little unfair though.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

BillAdama

I think this gets near the heart of the problem... we like to recommend albums that others haven't heard, but it becomes pointless when so many voters place their votes extremely early in the month without spending the allotted time listening to the music they haven't heard already. I can imagine a scenario where some voters give away points to albums that they don't necessarily like, but that they've simply heard and can therefore use to help fill in their lists. Maybe not, but I'm highly suspicious.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

I vote early because I simply know that I won't have much time to listen to new albums from the 2000s. I have heard so many albums from this decade that the chance of finding something new (that I like) is slim, and I prefer to spend my limited time listening to the albums in the Moderately Acclaimed game. For example, there is only one album in our top 25 for 2000 I haven't heard and it's #25.

On top of that, I have the small hope that I can get some people to listen to albums near the top of my (purposely) short lists by posting early.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

Let me be more clear- I'm not against people voting early (in fact, I always scan the early charts to find unknowns for my own listening) - my concern is that well-intentioned efforts like recommendation threads become worthless if they are largely ignored.

I certainly don't doubt the efforts put in by a large group of voters (such as yourself, Stephan)... I'm just doubtful that everyone is able to put in the same amount of effort, and I believe the results we end up with speak to this.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

I agree, it's just that I felt a need to defend myself a little since I posted the first list in both 2000 and 2001. BillAdama can attest to the fact that in the film polls I'm always one of the last to post, just to watch as many films as possible.

One possibility that just came to mind is giving weights to lists depending on how different they are from the consensus, but that too might be hard and a little unfair.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

I think we're missing the point a bit here, and perhaps overreacting to some fairly predictable results -- these specific polls are sort of defining our own canon. The Top 10s may be predictable, though maybe the final results won't be (at least the order). But the point of these I thought was consensus.

You all know I love my esoteric lists, but I think this forum is getting great at delving into those. I feel we should stay consistent with the original format...we're almost there!

(Also, I highly disagree with using the average score of the albums that didn't make the cut...fuzzy math that could result in rather annoying strategic voting.)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

I do think these polls should be designed to establish a board 'canon', but I feel different people are at different phases of their musical exploration. Somebody new to the site who's just straying away from mainstream for the first time benefits a lot more from the polls as we've been doing them. But somebody who's already been exploring for years and has already heard all the 'canon' albums benefits more from a game that delves a little deeper. That's why I was hoping to find a way to address both groups at the same time: Keep the 'canon' ones in but also leave room for new discoveries.

I agree going by average points per vote isn't the ideal solution, as it doesn't separate the albums a person doesn't like from the albums a person hasn't heard. Also, it makes it so you're penalizing your 20th favorite album but not your 21st.

I wonder if there's some way to come up with some sort of prediction metric for the percentage of voters who have heard the album, based on things like the AM rank, and sales figures that we can use as a constant divider for scores outside the top ten.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

Let me add in my two cents here: Every other decade had 10 albums and songs each year. Why not run this poll the same way? If we want to expand or change the system, we should do it next year for the second 90's poll, since we've already done the 90's under this system.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 2000

Just to make it clear: I am fine with 100 albums/songs and am happy to do it that way. I just think it can be improved. If we nominated 150 albums and songs and voted for the top 100 from there, I think we would have a more legitimate top 100. If we want to wait until the next go-around of the decades to implement a change then I understand that. My only question is why wait? I don't see a downside to nominating 150 albums/songs and picking a definitive top 100 from there.

Album sales would be a poor metric to determine how many AM users have heard an album. An album like Since I Left You didn't even dent the charts, but the majority of people here have heard it.

I think it's safer to assume that the AM rank directly correlates with the amount of people who have heard an album. The only exception would be albums by highly acclaimed/popular artists that bombed with critics, but I still think AM rank is the best method short of simply asking people to list every album they've heard from a given year.

Are there going to be Excel documents posted like in past polls?
