Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1968

Number Nine… Number Nine… Number Nine… Welcome to the Month Number 9 of the 50s & 60s acclaimed music forum poll, this month dedicated to 1968. Like that Beatles song from that year (that was 2000 light years from “Love Me Do”), 1968 it was a year for changes after the psychedelic explosion of the year before. Some of the 60s great names continued its reinvention (I’m thinking of “White Album" or “Beggars Banquet”) while many new artists and styles continued pushing hard the boundaries of pop music. Another year that it’s going to be (again) ridiculously good, with so many good music to choose.

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums with your personal choices, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 30th of September. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

You may find useful to have a look at the albums and songs lists of:
- Acclaimed Music: albums and songs.
- Rate Your Music: albums, songs and, since some of the album considered compilations in Rate Your Music are eligible on this poll, the compilations.

Have a nice poll…

Mindrocker, if you love Gainsbourg, I advise the song "Requiem pour un con". It's totally out of time with an amazing music loop for the time.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1968

Absolutely farking incredible list, nj.

It leads me to a couple questions for Honorio though as far as year eligibility...can we get a call on Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature, Eternal Rhythm, and Monster Movie?

RYM has them as 1969, not sure if there is more compelling evidence for '68. I'll hold off on posting 'til I hear back...

Thanks for the tip, Romain! Another cool Gainsbourg song indeed. And oh yeah, great albums list, nj!

You are welcome. Except "Initials B.B.", "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Requiem pour un con", I recommand to you (and other) these four songs by Gainsbourg : "Comic Strip", "Ford Mustang", "Qui est "in", qui est "out" ?" and "Docteur Jekyll et Monsieur Hyde". All in the album "Initials B.B." I trully recommand for all.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1968

Romain
Mindrocker, if you love Gainsbourg, I advise the song "Requiem pour un con"

Not only Mindrocker loves Gainsbourg. Last night I saw the Joann Sfar biopic about Gainsbourg, Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque), and I enjoyed it quite a lot (by the way, only my wife and I were at the theatre, we felt as if we have rented a big screen for our living room). The movie balances between the biopic and the (dreamy) fable with notable results in my humble opinion. And now I’m in a Gainsbourg mood (I mean I want to listen to Gainsbourg music, not beginning to smoke and drink madly like Gainsbarre, it’s understood).
Great recommendations, Romain!

Mindrocker
And oh yeah, great albums list, nj!

Yes, nj, I was missing your fascinating lists. Actually I was missing YOU here. But better late that never.
And I love your AM logo!! It’s a vinyl record with the letters A and M on it, isn’t it?
A BIG welcome back, nj

I think I'll make a topic on Gainsbourg... after all, he finished 102nd in the topic of 2010 all time favorite artist. A top 50 for example !
I'll try to do that.

Go ahead, Romain, it sounds good…

Why are songs from Leonard Cohen's 'Songs from Leonard Cohen' listed in the year '68 on AM when the album was released in '67?

According to Wikipedia, the first Cohen album saw a limited release in December 27, 1967. The date of the official release was February of 1968. That’s why many web pages (including AM) dated it initially as from 1968, probably Henrik changed the year for the album and not for the songs. I suppose that the next update will include the songs from this (wonderful) album in the 1967 list.

First results on eligibility (attending only the first four lists), results about the other three lists later:
- George Russell’s album “Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature”: not eligible for 1968 (released in 1969), nj’s list move one place up from #12.
- Nico’s album “The Marble Index”: not eligible for 1968 (released in 1969), nj’s list move one place up from #13.
- Don Cherry’s album “Eternal Rhythm”: not eligible for 1968 (released in 1969), nj’s list move one place up from #22.
- The Velvet Underground’s song “White Light/White Heat”: it should be not eligible for 1968 (it was first released in 1967) but since nobody voted for it in the 1967 poll I’m going to include the votes for this song and I will decide after the final counting.
- Can’s song “Thief”: not eligible for 1968 (first released officially in 1981), Moonbeam’s list move one place up from #6.

See the eligibility thread for more details:

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1968

These lists have been awesome so far; I've really been getting into a lot of these less popular albums. In particular, The Jazz Composer's Orchestra is a knockout. I recommend it to any avant-garde jazz fan.

ok, poll can close now. BRB, not enough s in stock...

Mmm, the fact is that the Top 15 albums is right now the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. I know that I shouldn’t do that but I simply can’t resist posting it:
1. The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Electric Ladyland
2. The Velvet Underground – White Light/White Heat
3. The Zombies – Odessey and Oracle
4. The United States of America – The United States of America
5. The Beatles – The Beatles
6. The Rolling Stones – Beggars Banquet
7. Os Mutantes – Os Mutantes
8. The Mothers of Invention – We’re Only in It for the Money
9. Van Morrison – Astral Weeks
10. Van Dyke Parks – Song Cycle
11. The Kinks – The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society
12. Laura Nyro – Eli and the Thirteenth Confession
13. The Soft Machine – The Soft Machine
14. Terry Riley – In C
15. The Millennium – Begin

However the songs list is still not significant, there are still four songs on the Top 10 with an only voter and only 6 (great) songs received 3 or more votes ("Sympathy for the Devil", " (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay", "All Along the Watchtower", "Time of the Season", "The Weight" and "Happiness Is a Warm Gun").
And of course, the poll is not closed at all. The list can be even better with YOUR votes. Come on, place your votes everyone.

afaik, DJ Hon still has one wildcard left to offer, son of Jack... (hint: go for it..) (pleeeeze..)

Sorry but I don’t understand which wildcard you’re referring.
But of course I’m writing my own list, I hope you can put some on it…

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1968

That T15 is incredible, hope it stays that way. That 4th place spot for USA positively nj-tastic. It's way better than that white album. Seriously though, I think this year might be even better than 67.

1. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
2. The Kinks - The Village Green Preservation Society
3. The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle
4. The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
5. The United States of America - The United States of America
6. The Rolling Stones - Beggar's Banquet
7. The Beatles - The Beatles
8. The Band - The Band
9. The Millenium - Begin
10. Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes

Songs will come later, although those are excellent too.

[30] Serge Gainsbourg & Brigitte Bardot | Bonnie and Clyde

I realized The Kinks have my top rated song of each year from 1967-1969, an impressive feat considering these are some of my favorite years in music. I'm disappointed that more people don't consider the wonderful title track from The Village Green Preservation Society a classic like I do. The lyrics go a lot deeper than might be apparent on first listen.

On another note, I would have had "Prelude/To Claudia on Thursday" as my number six track, but it was understandably ruled ineligible because it takes up two tracks on the CD release. "Prelude" is absolutely amazing, my favorite part of the album and my favorite song under two minutes, but I'll go with "To Claudia on Thursday" to correspond with sonofsam's vote.

I guess I didn't catch this ... does this mean each separate track from side 2 of Abbey Road will be only singularly eligible next month?

At any rate, Jackson, I'll change my vote to "Prelude" if you want to. Though in my imaginary world where The Millennium get radio airplay, those songs are always played together.

I feel the same way; I even edited them in Audacity so they're a single track in my music library.

I'm fine with keeping "To Claudia on Thursday" as my vote, "Prelude" is great but so short that I'd feel weird rating it on its own. Unfortunately, no Millennium track will make the list regardless.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1968

I'd rather go with the hilariously dopamine-downed Notorious-Byrd-Brothers-rip off "Some Sunny Day".. but the Prelude bit foreshadows everything The Soft Bull.. muh, forget it.. i'm babbling in cycles... here's to "I Just Want To Be Your Friend/5 a.m." - the only juxtaposee that ultimately WAS destined to end on a Blake Edwards '60s flick

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1968

Some questions and eligibilities:
- Jackson and sonofsamiam, probably I didn’t explain it properly, but definitely you CAN vote for a medley of songs, and of course you can vote for “Prelude / To Claudia on Thursday”. But I will count the points separately. For instance “Prelude” and “To Claudia on Thursday” are now tied (with “This Will Be Our Year” by the way) in the 12th position of the poll (I finally added to “Prelude” 40 points from sonofsamiam and 20 points from Jackson). In case of both songs ending inside the Top 10 I would include it as one song and I would pick the song at #11 to complete the Top 10. The same for the “Abbey Road” medley, you can vote for a medley of songs or for a particular song inside this medley if you prefer it, all your votes will be counted anyway. Hope it’s clear now.
- Henry, The Temptations’ I Wish It Would Rain was released as a single in December of 1967 according to Rate Your Music, soulfulkindamusic and Global Dog. Later was released as part of the album of the same name in 1968. Your list move one place up from #13.
- Henry, I assume that your album list is ranked, I mean “White Album” was your #1 and “Wainting for the Sun” your #13, isn’t it? Or do you prefer to assign 10 points to each one of the 13 albums?
- Slick, “Voodoo Chile” is your #9 song. I assume you wanted to vote for the last song on “Electric Ladyland” album with the best use of a wah-wah ever, “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”, already voted by Gillingham and Henry. Or did you voted for “Voodoo Chile”, the lengthy jam that closes side A of the original album (track 4 of the CD release)? Please let me know, if not I will assign the 14 points to “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”

That was Chris, not me that had Voodoo Child at #9... But if it is possible could I put that song at #3 instead of Castles Made of Sand (which was pointed out to me was 1967) since I thought Voodoo Child was part of 1970 for some reason. That would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for making the adjustment in my songs list.

I did mean to place the "White Album" as #1 and each other album in sequence as indicated. Please do not assign 10 points to each of the albums.

My favourite Spanish song of 1968: Lone Star's "Mi calle"

The imitative Spanish music scene of the 60s got its "official" Spanish Beatles (Los Brincos) and the Spanish Stones (Los Salvajes), bands that I talked about on the 1965 and 1966 polls. Well, so we got the Spanish Animals too, Lone Star. During their long career they flirted with many other styles like hard-rock or prog-rock, but their beginnings were deeply rooted in British R&B (with some forays in American soul) covering most of The Animals hits like "Comprensión" ("Don’t Let Me be Misunderstood"), "Muy lejos de aquí" ("We Gotta Get Out of This Place") and, of course, "La casa del sol naciente" ("The House of the Rising Sun"), that sold more singles in Spain and Latin America that the Animals’ original.
I purposely mentioned the soul because there was a strong influence of Stax and Atlantic soul in the late 60s music scene. Maybe Lone Star would not be the best example but lot of Spanish pop bands added brass players and wild rhythms to their sound, sometimes with quite notable results. I’m thinking for instance in bands like Los Canarios (also on my 1968 list) or Los Pop Tops. The scene even had a foundational movie, Un, dos, tres, al escondite inglés, directed by the late Iván Zulueta.
Lone Star was a band from Barcelona lead by singer and songwriter Pedro Gené backed by a changing line of musicians. The song Mi Calle ("My Street") was probably his/their greatest achievement. Inspired by his (dangerous) walks through a real street in Barcelona (carrer del Trovador, Troubadour Street) with prostitution and delinquency all around, Gené wrote a song that described quite eloquently the poverty and lack of opportunities during the Franco's Spain of the late 60s but with an underlying message of positivity and overcoming. The music arrangements integrated quite brilliantly the rhythm & blues and soul influences of the band in an orchestrated pop context.

Na na na na na na na na na na,
na na na na na na,
na na na na na na na,
na na na na na.

Vivo en un lugar
donde no llega la luz.
Niños se ven
que van descalzos,
sin salud.

Por la estrecha calle
algún carro viene y va.
Y cuando llueve
nadie puede caminar.

Mi calle tiene un oscuro bar
de húmedas paredes.
Pero sé que alguna vez
cambiará mi suerte.

Na na na na na na na,
na na na na na na,
na na na na na na na,
na na na na na.

Doy mi dirección
a quien brindo mi amistad,
más al saberla
no me quieren visitar.

Pero alguna vez,
siempre por casualidad,
he visto amigos
con mujeres en el bar.

Mi calle tiene un oscuro bar
de húmedas paredes.
Pero sé que alguna vez
cambiará mi suerte.

Na na na na na na na,

MY STREET

Na na na na na na na na na na,
na na na na na na,
na na na na na na na,
na na na na na.

I live in a place
where the light never comes.
You can see children
barefoot and unhealthy.

Through the narrow street
some cart come and goes.
And when it rains
no one can walk.

In my street there’s a dark club
with damp walls.
But I know that some time
my luck could change.

Na na na na na na na,
na na na na na na,
na na na na na na na,
na na na na na.

I give my address
to whom I offer my friendship
but when they see it
they don’t want to visit me.

But sometimes,
always by chance,
I’ve seen friends
with women at the club.

In my street there’s a dark club
with damp walls.
But I know that some time
my luck could change.

Na na na na na na na,
na na na na na na,

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1968

Time for the first results, here you got the best albums of 1968 according with AM voters. This edition we got 25 voters, 3 more that in the 1967 edition. A huge welcome to the new voters (or should I say the prodigal sons): nj (at last!), Zorg, Superfurry and Alex D.
This time we had the Fab Four at the #1 but at certain points of the game we had The Velvet Underground and The Jimi Hendrix Experience at the top. But at the very last moment both albums were surpassed by “Odessey and Oracle” that ended at a suprising (but deserved) #2. And finally we ended with a terrific Top 15 and, yes, almost as cool as the one that I posted on the mean time. Finally Van Dyke Parks, Laura Nyro (sigh!), The Soft Machine and Terry Riley left the building to let in another great 4 choices. Let’s see:

1. The Beatles - The Beatles
2. The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle
3. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
4. The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet
5. The Kinks - The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society
6. The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
7. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
8. The United States of America - The United States of America
9. The Mothers of Invention- We're Only in It for the Money
10. The Millennium - Begin
11. Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes
12. Simon & Garfunkel - Bookends
13. Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
14. The Band - Music From Big Pink
15. The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers

Many thanks everyone for participating.
The songs will follow.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of 1968

Pity the Byrds couldn't have made it 2 albums - Sweetheart would have been a good substitute for the Beatles,oh well...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1968

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Songs of 1968

I've got to say, no Beatles in the songs list is quite refreshing. "Hung Up on a Dream" performed well beyond my expectations, especially considering its finish relative to "Time of the Season" in the all-time songs poll. Unfortunately the VU, the Kinks, and Os Mutantes, despite having qualifying albums, couldn't get enough support around any one song.

Although I like the Beatles I find it extremely funny they had three songs just outside the list :)

The people have spoken!
