COLDPLAY--
Hate to go against Otis...

DEPECHE MODE--
With the exception of 'Violator', not a strong album band, but lots of great singles over 30 years...

STONE ROSES--
Will take this band against everyone but The Cure in this bracket...

THE CURE--
Easy choice for me, especially against Devo...

VU--
Pet Shop Boys just do not have enough to warrant my vote...

Abstain from this one. I can't decide whether to vote for Green Day for their 90s stuff or against them for their 00s stuff. Using the metric other people are using: There aren't many bands who manage to go from a 15 down to a 5.

Madonna 20, Stone Temple Pilots 13: Madonna is the pre-eminent pop star, and rightfully so. Though her recent material is pretty bad, she has at least 3 5-star albums by my count, and a host of classic singles that will live on for a long time. I like some STP songs, but this is no contest.
INXS 15, Green Day 0: Another easy win. I don't quite adore INXS, but I quite like Kick, X and Welcome to Wherever You Are. Green Day is the epitome of the new punk that I just detest.
Gorillaz 17, Wu Tang Clan 10: Demon Days is one of the greatest albums of the 2000s to me, and I don't really know much Wu Tang. Easy choice.
Otis Redding 17, Coldplay 0: Yet another easy choice, as I've really come to admire Otis over the past year- the first 60s soul singer that I really, really like a lot. Coldplay is one big yawn, and strikes me as coffee table music for casual music fans to uphold as something somewhat meaningful as its limp offerings seep into the wallpaper.
Depeche Mode 19, Willie Nelson 10: Violator was paramount to my musical development as a kid, and I quite like nearly all of their albums. Willie Nelson is one of the best country artists in my mind, but my preference for synth pop makes this another easy choice.
Stone Roses 15, Bee Gees 15: The first tough matchup! I like a lot of material by both of these artists, and both seem deserving of a spot here. However, I've actually purchased a Stone Roses album, and haven't done the same with Bee Gees, so that makes my decision.
The Cure 20, Devo 14: The Cure is my favorite band- there's nothing really more to say here. I like Devo, but they're going up against a giant.
The Velvet Underground 18, Pet Shop Boys 15: I imagine I'd really like Pet Shop Boys if I invested in their stuff, but I haven't ventured beyond a singles comp. Meanwhile, the first 2 VU albums changed the way I hear music, so that wins here.

Maybe I'm a bit too hard on 00's Green Day because they are currently pandering to the phase of my life I'm the least proud of. The 'Idle Entitled'. They started doing that as early as Dookie ('My mama says to get a job, but she don't like the one she's got! So keep supporting me and shut up MOM!') Now they've added Michael-Moore-level-of-actual-understanding straw man liberalism. The people Green Day are now pandering to are the reason Fox News has an audience. Green Day has turned into the goth kids from South Park. And as of their last album they can't even write a competent melody anymore.
