#5 Culture Club: Easy win for one of the 80s' more colorful acts!
#3 Soundgarden: This is a very close call. Tomorrow I might pick The Impressions.
#4 Alice Cooper: Also tough, but we need more like Alice!
#6 The Cranberries: I can't stand The Eagles.
#5 Eurythmics: I'll likely be the only vote for them, but they are one of the only artists to rival Prince for me, and I've gone on about them ad naueseum here.
#3 The Animals: It's hard for me to remember why I used to like The Offspring.
#1 RHCP: I don't love them, but they still have some songs I enjoy.
#2 The Doors: I'm warming to Massive Attack, but I adore L.A. Woman.

I'll play along with the categories I see thrown out after these votes:

Favorite Artist of the Bracket: Eurythmics, by far.
Favorite Artist I didn't vote for: Massive Attack
Favorite Album: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (#5 all-time)
Favorite Song: "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" (#3 all-time)

Re: UMT 3.13...

Why is it that so many people on this forum dislike the Eagles? I don't really like them that much either(although I'm a fan of most of Don Henley's solo stuff) but I'm not going to vote for the Cranberries over them...

No rational reason here- I just can't stand any of the songs I've heard of theirs, particularly "Hotel California".

Re: UMT 3.13...

Led Zeppelin
Soundgarden (Curtis solo would have been another thing)
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
The Cranberries
Johnny Cash (I had to look up my top 100 list for this one, and it turned out that Cash won over Eurythmics with 3 places, #62 vs. #65...)
The Animals
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Massive Attack (The best two bands in the same match-up again! )

Johnny Cash

Toughest vote-off today is Eurythmics, but Annie & Dave can’t stay on the field with Johnny Cash.

Re: UMT 3.13...

Led Zeppelin - sadly though, one of the first LPs I ever purchased was Colour by Numbers. On vinyl. My Dad was not very happy.
The Impressions
Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
The Eagles
The Eurythmics - I respect Johnny Cash for an amazing career, but I never listen to any of his music, whereas "Here Comes the Rain Again" still sounds great after 26 years
The Animals
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Doors

Didn't really have a hard time with any of these votes; strangely, I've had a much easier time voting in the 3rd round than in the first two

Today's favorite: The Eagles
Today's favorite I didn't vote for: Culture Club
Favorite song: "Hotel California", though it's close over "D'yer Ma'ker"

Re: UMT 3.13...

Henrik, I'm surprised you don't like Mayfield's work with the Impressions!

Led Zeppelin - A little part of me is tempted to join Moonbeam on the CC vote, but just a very little bit.
The Impressions - Underrated for some wonderful Motown-esque singles, along with their beautiful gospel derived numbers.
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The two sweetest male voices, back to back.
Eagles - When I'm being honest with myself, their hits, many of which I do not like, are too numerous to lose to a relatively lightweight group in the Cranberries.
Johnny Cash - High on my to do list is to dig through the Eurythmics back catalog, given Moonbeam's forceful and persuasive arguments in their favor. But Cash still grabs me more.
The Animals - Not a fan of either.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Massive Attack - Not my favorite trip-hop, but better than the Doors (who are better than the Eagles).

Favorite this round - The Impressions
Favorite not voted for - Eurythmics?

Re: UMT 3.13...

My problem with the Eagles is their songwriting. It's always very kitschy and melodramatic. "Desperado", "Johnny Come Lately", etc. I just don't like any of their songs except maybe Hotel California, and for The Cranberries there are at least two or three songs I strongly like.

I'd compare them to Queen in the 'Kitsch/melodrama' respect, but not quite to the same extent.

Re: UMT 3.13...

I'm not trying to force anyone into anything. I guess we all trumpet our favorite music to some extent, and maybe I do so a little too much here! If you know their big singles ("Sweet Dreams", "Love Is a Stranger", "Here Comes the Rain Again", "Who's That Girl?", "Would I Lie to You", "There Must Be an Angel", "Missionary Man", etc.), you can see a sharp divide in their work, as they went from synth pop experimentation to the pop/rock/soul mainstream. I think they succeed well in both, although I prefer the former. In any case, it's a good indication of where you should start if you can tell which singles intrigue you more.

If you think you may prefer the early stuff, I've posted my reviews of their first 4 albums along with a Deezer playlist of their lesser known work from that era in this thread:

A good place to start with their post-84 work is Be Yourself Tonight- it set the course for the remainder of their career. Revenge is a sort of bigger, louder version of that. Savage is a sardonic return to more twisted synth arrangements, while We Too Are One saw them rather gently and meekly bow out for awhile with a sort of sophisticated pop/rock in line with Annie Lennox's Diva, although not quite as good. The reunion album Peace is not unlike an Annie Lennox solo album, although you can hear Dave's muscle in there.
